The Unsung Heroes of Hospice Georgina
If you are a regular reader of our newsletter, you will hear often about the
accomplishments of our volunteers, the generosity of our donors, and the supportiveness
of our community. And rightly so! If it were not for all these people “Sharing the Caring,”
we would not be able to make an impact in Georgina. But there is a small group of people
who work very hard, week after week who deserve celebration and acknowledgement.
They are the staff of Hospice Georgina. As the Executive Director, I am often seen as the
face of the agency, our representative in the community. But most of the hard work at
Hospice Georgina goes on behind the scenes.
Laurie K. is our Office Manager. She is the friendly voice on the phone, the first smiling
face you see at our office, the brain behind all our administrative and financial issues, and
the primary organizer of our fundraisers (and she puts together this newsletter!).
Jackie K. is our Grief and Bereavement Coordinator. She single-handedly coordinates our
entire grief and bereavement program, funded by United Way Toronto and York Region.
She supports bereaved individuals and families, runs bereavement groups and has
guided us into new territories of art and writing therapy for grief.
And although both of these ladies have many of their own duties, they are never too busy
to lend a hand around the office when help is needed for an event, fundraiser, group or
with a client. Hospice Georgina is so lucky to have Laurie and Jackie. They truly lead by
example in “Sharing the Caring”!
Until next month,

GETTING TO KNOW RACHEL WARREN
HOSPICE’S SUMMER STUDENT: Rachel Warren
H
How long have you lived in Georgina?
I have lived in Georgina basically my whole life. Moved around here and there
growing up but always found our way back here.
Tell us a bit about your background…
I am Aboriginal, from Georgina Island First Nations. My father was Native and
.
my mother is Canadian. I have an older sister and a younger half-brother.
Tell us about some of your favourite things to do…
I enjoy travelling, meeting new people, learning new things, and spending time
with my family and friends.
What is your role at Hospice Georgina?
I am working as the Client Care Coordinator for the summer. I am working
under the Executive Director Marie Morton.
Volunteer Hours: Just a reminder that all volunteers need to report your volunteer hours every month by the 10th . This information is
reported to the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care, which in turn funds our palliative programs. Without volunteer hours, our funding
could be in jeopardy.
Scammers “HIJACK” Business Names
Sadly Hospice Georgina’s name was used recently by scammers for unsuspecting job seekers
being conned into parting with their hard earned money. What is a job scam? A job scam
occurs when a scammer poses as an employer or recruiter, and offers attractive employment
opportunities which require that the job seeker pay money in advance. This is usually under the
guise of work visas, travel expenses or background and or credit checks that are required for
the job. Once the money has been paid over the scammer disappears, and the job seeker is
left with no job, and out of pocket.
Whatever the scammer’s technique is and how they go about their goal is always the same. To
separate you from your cash, or to obtain your confidential personal information, that can be
used in identity theft.
The problem is, that scammers are becoming more and more crafty in the way they operate,
and it’s becoming more and more difficult to know what is a scam and what is a legitimate job
opening.
It also appears that more and more often, the scammers are targeting job seekers from
overseas, such as hopeful immigrants or contractors, where they use the lure of huge salaries,
work permits and paid travel as ways of enticing the job seeker to part with their money.
Please note that Hospice Georgina is not currently hiring for any positions. And when
we do hire, we do not charge fees for training or ask job seekers for money in advance.
It's time to renew your annual membership!
Memberships are valid from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017. Remember, your
membership must be current to be able to vote at our AGM this September.
Events
Once again the support from the Georgina community and level of support
in Georgina never ceases to amaze me. On Monday May 30th, Lake
Simcoe Arms hosted its 2nd annual charity golf tournament at The Briars in
support of Hospice Georgina. Sixteen teams golfed on a picture perfect
day and rounded out the evening at LSA for dinner, silent and live auctions,
and awards. Participants reported having a fun time for a great cause.
These funds will remain in Georgina and be used by Hospice Georgina to
provide non-medical support to palliative people and those living with lifelimiting/life-threatening illness, their caregivers and families, and the
bereaved. All services are free of charge. This amazing result was made
possible by the hard work of the event committee, to whom many thanks
are owed: Laura Lipchitz and the staff of Lake Simcoe Arms, Steve Grass
and the staff of The Briars Golf Club, Steve Jacobson and Mayor Margaret
.
Quirk
for a great job at the live auction, plus staff and volunteers at Hospice
Georgina. But no event is complete without the sponsors, donors and
participants.

Grief & Bereavement
This month, Hospice Georgina welcomes back
Soul-Full Art Therapy for two no cost evenings
of exploring self-care through grief. We will be
making masks on June 8th depicting what we
are feeling on the inside versus how we
present ourselves to others. On June 15th we
will be transforming some of our challenges
with grief into paper sculptures. Art Therapy
offers a safe way to release some of our
unresolved feelings of grief in a supportive
group, with a focus on art-making as opposed
to talking. No art experience is necessary and
all supplies are provided. Spaces are still
available but registration is required. Please
call Jackie at 905-722-9333 to see if these
evenings would be suitable for you.
