Is the Whole Run As Good As
the Sum of It’s Parts

Making run after run on our barrel horses can escalate problems more often than it does to peak our horses for their best run.
Peaking for our best competition run has been a challenge forever
and a challenge that takes careful thought, planning and even luck
to attain the perfect competition run. By working on the different
parts of a run, strengthening, sharpening and quickening the slower,
weaker parts of our barrel patterns builds a strong, fresh, tuned
“whole” to our barrel runs.
First of all, double check that you have your horse fit, sound and
feeling as good as your expertise allows you.
Secondly, make a mental exam of your barrel run. Identify areas
lacking sharpness. Does your horse take any extra steps in his
turns? In a competition run, is your horse requiring you to help and
support more than normal?
Thirdly, let’s take apart your barrel run and break it down into
different segments…go through the following steps and anywhere
you feel is slow, weak, or just not strong and full of forward motion, spend enough time on it so that both you and your horse are
confident and mindful of all of the steps…then putting all of the
parts together will build a stronger and more consistent barrel run
for both you and your horse partner.
Fit, Sound and Feeling Good? The importance of fitness is
easy to overlook. Having a balanced fitness program adds to our
horse’s lung capacity and run recovery time. As an added benefit, a
fit horse supports soundness since strong healthy muscles get sore

less often and strong fit muscles withstand slips and over extensions better. An effective fitness program always includes a mixture
of long slow distance, sprint workouts, arena work and down time
(rest and relaxation time to heal and recover) mixed with a feeding
program that provides appropriate energy for our horse’s workload.
Once in a while a thorough lameness exam can be eye opening
in evaluating our horse’s soreness and as always it is wise to have
a starting baseline to compare future exams to. Being aware of
sudden changes in your horse: new and unusual stiffness, drastic
change in their runs, unreasonable behavior, changed eating pattern,
all set off red flags of concern. Follow up on any of these! You
know your horse better than anyone!
Make a mental exam of your barrel run. What parts of your
barrel run feel your weakest? Are your turns quick and consistent?
Is your horse taking any extra steps in a turn? Will your horse sprint
the moment when you ask him? Is your horse running right to your
spots and running home hard? How much do you have to guide
your horse through your run? Ask yourself these questions or similar ones to define where in your run, you and your horse could use a
bit of work and fine tuning.

Sprints! Could your horse use a sprint or two or would that make
him hotter? I am a fan of at least some sprint workouts and adding
a feathering down to the end of a sprint, being mindful to keep my

horse between my reins and legs, all the while keeping their body
aligned. I sometimes do a sprint from corner to corner of the arena,
using the arena fence to feather down to a stop, taking about three
strides in the feather down and having my horse softly slow down
staying in a straight line.
All rights or all lefts…use this exercise until both right turns and
left turns are balanced and even, doing more on whatever side needs
work to balance the stronger side. I like to set up an even triangle.
We are accustom to having a third barrel set farther down the arena,
so, be sure to make an even distance triangle.
I then, riding around the outside of the whole triangle, do all
right turns, going only as fast as both me and my horse can make
a smooth and efficient turn. I can turn up the speed as needed and
slow down as a reward to a relaxed quiet turn. After your right turn
feels smooth, quiet and your horses steps are even, change to the
left repeating the whole exercise.
The Double Back Drill. After you both get the triangle exercise
down, I mix it up with my favorite, Judy Myllymaki drill, the double
back. I trot up to a turn, drop to a walk and go all the way around
the barrel then double back around the same barrel another time
but at a trot. I also really get great results by doing this drill at a
lope! Be sure to go to the right and to the left until both you and
your horse are comfortable and relaxed with the footwork!
Collection. Collection, ah, with a bit of collection, even the
tightest turning horse can find some room around their barrel.
Collection is my catch all to many of the weak places in my horses’
runs. Walk your horse up to a single barrel, ask them to come back
to light pressure on your reins, rounding at your horse’s pole and
through their backs, while strongly walking up underneath themselves. Walk around the whole barrel turn. Only after you have your
horse walk rounded and softly around the whole barrel turn, let
them lengthen and stretch down with their neck and stride. This
builds lower back strength and stride strength. Your horse will
really tell you where in his turn that this is difficult, be gentle yet
persistent until you and your horse can be rounded and forward the
whole way around a turn and to each direction. Once you both have
mastered this at a walk, give it a try at a trot!
Keep in touch with the parts of your horse’s barrel run: strengthen weaker areas, sharpen up footwork and know you have your
horse sound, fit and feeling good. This will surely enhance your
horse’s peak performance! Make your whole run greater than the
sum of it’s parts. Good Luck and Happy Trails!

Headin’ For Home
S
pring is the time of rebirth and renewing.
We see baby calves and lambs and foals peeking out from
behind their mothers. The grass, which looked so brown and
dead, is greening up and the bare trees are coming to life.
It’s time to remember that Jesus rose from the dead. He overcame death so we need have no fear. He paid for our sins and paved
the way for us to not only have eternal life when we die but also to
have abundant life while we live on earth.
God loves us so much He “gave his only begotten Son that
whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting
life.” (John 3:16) If you had a friend who saved you from drowning, pulled you from a burning building or took a bullet for you,
you would be ever so grateful to that person. How is it that so many
people go about their lives and rarely even think of God?
How much more we should honor God for what He has done. A
friend might save your earthly life but God saved you for life ever-
lasting. Some cultures believe that if someone saves your life, your
life then belongs to that person. That’s a good way to think about
Jesus. We owe Him everything. Not only does His death and resurrection save us for eternity but His shed blood cleanses us from all
sin. It says in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins to Him, He is
faithful to forgive us. He also does not remember them anymore
after they are forgiven (Hebrews 8:12).
We are so blessed to know Jesus and to have heard the good news
of the Gospel. If Jesus is your best friend you have nothing to fear
in this life or the next! Make sure you get to know Him well. He’ll
meet you where you are!!
