MOHALI
DISCIPLINED bowling and a
fortune-tinged 85 by Sachin
Tendulkar saw India beat
Pakistan by 29 runs on
Wednesday to set-up a World
Cup final against Sri Lanka in
Mumbai on Saturday.
Pakistan, chasing 261 for
victory, was dismissed for 231
with a ball to spare in a match
that had assumed huge political as well as sporting significance in the build-up.
Misbah-ul-Haq, who topscored for Pakistan with 56,
helped take it from 208 for
nine to a situation where an
unlikely 30 was needed off the
last over.
But Zaheer Khan held his
nerve, bowling four dot balls
before Misbah holed out to
Virat Kohli to the delight of a
capacity crowd.
India’s 260 for nine against
its arch-rivals was built around
man-of-the-match
Tendulkar’s 85.
But it might have made considerably less had not the star
batsman been dropped four
times in an innings that still
left him one short of a hundred
international hundreds.
Left-arm fast bowler Wahab
Riaz led Pakistan’s attack with
career-best figures of five for
46.
India skipper Mahendra
Singh Dhoni, who won the toss
and batted, said it was important to treat the slowing PCA
Stadium pitch with respect.
Indian players celebrate after beating Pakistan during the semi-final match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, in Mohali, on Wednesday.
“We got off to a fantastic
start
through
Virender
Sehwag and Sachin (48 runs
in 5.5 overs) but as the game
progressed the wicket got
slower, and in the middle
overs it was difficult to score,”
said Dhoni.
“It was important to just
play the bowling with respect.
260 was a good score for this
pitch. It was turning.”
Pakistan captain Shahid
Afridi admitted his team had
missed its chances to dismiss
Tendulkar who was dropped
on 27, 45, 70 and 81 in a butter-fingered fielding performance. “We missed some opportunities and they played better
than us. We didn’t make partnerships and we played some
irresponsible shots. I want to
say sorry to my nation - we
tried our level best.”
Pakistan saw Kamran
Akmal start its pursuit with a
first ball four off Zaheer.
But the left-arm quick had
his revenge with a slower ball
the opener sliced to Yuvraj
Singh at point to leave
Pakistan 44 for one.
Mohammad Hafeez made
43 before he was caught
behind after trying to sweep
seamer Munaf Patel.
Yuvraj, out for a golden
duck, atoned in front of his
home crowd with two wickets
for no runs in five balls as
Pakistan slumped to 106 for
four. The left-arm spinner
bowled Asad Shafiq (30) as the
batsman made room to cut
and then had the experienced
Younus Khan (13) caught at
cover by Suresh Raina.
(EPA)
Umar Akmal, however,
counter-attacked in trademark
style, pulling and driving
Yuvraj for the first two sixes of
the match.
But on 29 he was bowled by
an arm ball from local hero
Harbhajan Singh to leave
Pakistan 142 for five.
Pakistan required 84 off the
last 10 overs and needed a big
innings from big-hitting but
out of form Afridi.
Afridi only managed 19
before he sliced Harbhajan to
Virender Sehwag at coverpoint and at 184 for seven the
game was almost up for
Pakistan.
Earlier, the 25-year-old Riaz
kept his side in the match.
Riaz, on as first change,
struck fifth ball when he
had dangerman Sehwag,
hitting across the line, lbw
for 38 including nine
boundaries.
Tendulkar, opening with
Sehwag, subsequently squaredrove Riaz for four to become
the first batsman ever to score
400 runs in three separate
World Cups.

WADA to appeal Contador doping acquital
Sauber accepts Melbourne results
Tour of Japan cancelled
MADRID The World Anti-Doping Agency said it
has joined world’s cycling’s governing body in
appealing the Spanish federation’s decision to
acquit three-time Tour de France winner
Alberto Contador over a doping case.
WADA “has filed today a declaration to appeal
to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in
Lausanne against the Spanish Cycling
Federation’s (RFEC) decision in the case of
Alberto Contador,” it said.
PARIS Sauber will not appeal the exclusions of drivers Kamui Kobayashi of
Japan and Mexican Sergio Perez from the
Australian Grand Prix for technical
infringements, the Formula One team said
on Wednesday.
Kobayashi, who finished eighth and
Perez, in seventh, were found to have
breached technical regulations and will
not get any points from the race.
OSAKA The 2011 Tour of Japan has been
cancelled following a massive earthquake
and tsunami that ravaged the country’s
northeast, organisers said on Wednesday.
The March 11 disaster has damaged power
facilities, including a nuclear plant, causing
rolling electricity cuts in wide areas. The
15th annual cycling event had been scheduled to be competed through seven stages
including Tokyo from May 15.

FIFA World

KUALA LUMPUR
ASIAN giants Saudi Arabia
and Iran were drawn
against Hong Kong and the
Maldives, respectively on
Wednesday as they begin
their long quests to return
to the FIFA World Cup in
2014.
The Saudis, who contested
four consecutive World Cups
but were agonisingly beaten
in a 2009 Asian play-off by
Bahrain, admitted they had
little knowledge of Hong
Kong, whom they will face
for a place in the group stage.
“We are not familiar with
Hong Kong,” said Olympic
team manager Wajdi AlTaweel, who was in Kuala
Lumpur to observe the draw at
the
Asian
Football
Confederation headquarters.
“Of course, our target is to
qualify for the World Cup.”
Iran should have no trouble
against the Maldives as they
bid to reach a fourth World
Cup after appearances in
1978, 1998 — when they
memorably beat the United
States 2-1 — and 2006.
Iraq will play Yemen in the
second round while China,
whose sole World Cup
appearance was in 2002, will
face either Cambodia or Laos.
The United Arab Emirates
play India and Jordan will
take on either Nepal or East
Timor.
Malaysia will play Taiwan
for the chance to face neighbours Singapore in the second
round.
However,
Malaysia coach K. Rajagopal
said his bigger focus was
rebuilding for the next Asian
Cup in Australia.
“Our main priority is one
game at a time. I’m building a
team for the future, a team
that will qualify for the Asian
Cup in Australia in 2015,” he
said.
Asia’s top five teams —
Japan,
South
Korea,
Australia, North Korea and
Bahrain — have a bye for the
first two rounds, and will join
qualifying at the group stage.

Ibrahimovic’s absence from derby a big blow, says AC Milan chief
Spanish judge bars league strike
ROME AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has admitted that the absence
of star forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Saturday’s derby against Inter Milan is a
huge blow. The Sweden forward is serving the second of a two-match ban
imposed for striking Bari’s Marco Rossi in the ribs.
He was originally banned for the regulation three games for violent conduct
but has his sentence was surprisingly reduced on appeal. Milan suffered a shock
1-0 defeat at Palermo in the one game he missed so far and Galliani admitted
they will feel his absence on Saturday, even though he insisted the derby —
between the top two in Serie A — won’t be decisive in the title race. “You can
still lose the derby and win the league, and vice-versa. It would be decisive if it
was the last day of the season and the teams were separated by no more than
three points,” he said. “Ibrahimovic has been crucial in every game, both in
attack and in defence. “I don’t know if you (journalists) have noticed what he
does when defending corners and free-kicks.
MADRID A Spanish judge on Wednesday
barred the country’s football league (LFP)
from staging a strike this weekend to protest
broadcast rights. The judge backed a suit
filed by six first division clubs who had
opposed the planned walkout. Madrid Judge
Purificacion Pujol decided to “suspend ... the
agreement adopted by the (LFP) on February
11. As a result, the official calendar of the
first and second divisions of the league cannot be changed,” she said in a ruling. Pujol
on Tuesday heard depositions by the parties
concerned: representatives of the LFP and
those of six clubs opposed to the strike.

Cup. Since finishing third in
South Africa, Germany have
failed to win any of their last
four friendlies, but are undefeated and five points clear at the
top of their Euro 2012 qualifying group.
Germany coach Joachim
Loew was punished for naming
an inexperienced line-up which
never recovered after the guests
stunned their hosts by taking
the lead and then refused to
buckle when the Germans pressurised for an equaliser.
“It was a question of attitude,”
admitted veteran striker
Miroslav Klose, who came off
the bench in the second-half
with his side behind.
“You can prepare very well,
but then you play a bit loosely
come match day and pay the
price.
“That sort of thing shouldn’t
happen.”
The 30,000-strong crowd,
mainly Germans with pockets
of die-hard Australian fans,
vented their frustrations with
loud boos and whistles in the
second-half when the home side
fell behind.
Defender Arne Friedrich,
another survivor from the side
which won so convincingly at
the World Cup last June, said
the team suffered from their
inexperience.
“We had a lot of changes, but
that is no excuse,” said the
Wolfsburg star.
“We didn’t pay attention for a
few minutes and were punished.
“The coach can’t have failed to
notice what worked and what
didn’t, so these type of matches
are necessary (to experiment).”
Goal-scorer Mario Gomez
blamed the fans for his poor
performance, who booed and
whistled their team in
Moenchengladbach, just as they
did against Kazakhstan on
Saturday despite the 4-0 win in
Kaiserslautern. “I wasn’t able to
concentrate fully,” admitted
Bayern Munich star Gomez,
who with 19 goals, is the
Bundesliga’s top-scorer.
“Normally, my biggest competition for a place in the team is
Miroslav, but at the moment,
some of the fans are not making
life easy.”
Mainz
striker
Andre
Schuerrle, who was winning
only his second cap and was one
of several who struggled, admitted the team lost their shape
after falling behind.
73 Serbian fans
held in Estonia
AFP
TALLINN
ESTONIAN police said on
Wednesday they had
detained 73 Serbia fans during the two nations’ Euro
2012 qualifier in the Baltic
state’s capital Tallinn.
Police Major Einar Lillo
told the Baltic News Service
that the rowdy fans — a mixture of Serbs, Russians and
Russian-speaking Estonian
citizens — were arrested during Tuesday night’s match,
which ended in a knife-edge
1-1.
“The police stopped the
Serbia supporters’ provocative behaviour, staving off a
potential risk increase,” Lillo
said. Some of the detainees
were found to be in position
of fireworks and blunt
instruments, he added.
Away fans had been barred
from the match, in line with
a sanction slapped on Serbia
by European football’s governing body UEFA after
www.qatar-tribune.com
trouble during an October 12
away qualifier against Italy.
That match was delayed
and then abandoned by the
referee after just six minutes
due to Serbia fans throwing
flares onto the pitch and at
Italy supporters, and was
followed by clashes with
police.
UEFA awarded Italy a 3-0
win, ordered Serbia to play
two home matches in an
empty stadium, and banned
their fans from the remaining away games in their Euro
2012 qualifying campaign.
The only exception was for
the Serbian FA’s official
match delegations — 70strong in Tallinn’s A. Le Coq
Arena.
Lillo criticised the delegation, noting that among the
detained fans were individuals carrying invitations from
the Serbian FA.
Enforcing a ban on locals
who buy tickets but plan to
support a visiting team can
also be a headache.

RIO DE JANEIRO Former Germany captain

Ghana star Gyan happy
over Wembley equaliser

AFP
LONDON
ASAMOAH Gyan admits he
was shocked when he scored
the historic late goal that gave
Ghana a dramatic 1-1 draw
against England in a friendly
at Wembley.
Gyan netted Ghana’s
equaliser with a fine solo
effort in stoppage time to cancel out Andy Carroll’s first-
half strike for Fabio Capello’s
team on Tuesday.
The Sunderland striker
become known across the
globe when he wasted a
chance to put Ghana into the
World Cup semi-finals last
year by missing a late penalty
against Uruguay following
Luis Suarez’s infamous handball.
But Gyan hasn’t dwelt on
that agonising mistake and he
went some way to erasing the
memory by scoring Ghana’s
first goal against England in
front of more than 20,000 of
his country’s fans at the
English national stadium.
The 25-year-old twisted
past England defender Joleon
Lescott with ease before curling his shot into the far corner
of Joe Hart’s goal.
It was a superb goal, yet
Gyan claimed he wasn’t sure
what he was doing. “I was
twisting and turning, but
honestly, I didn’t know what I
was doing, I was just trying to
protect the ball,” he said.
“The English defenders are
very intelligent, but they did
not know if I was going to
pass the ball, but I thought,
well they might push me
down, but they didn’t do that,
so I thought, I’ve got a chance,
so I took my chance.
“This goal is something historic — it’s the first goal we’ve
scored against England.
“It was fantastic to score. It
was the first time we had
played at Wembley. It has
been a dream for everyone in
Ghana to play here.
“We have been waiting for
quite a long time to play at
Wembley. A lot of Ghanaians
have been asking why couldn’t we play against England.

midfielder
Niko Kranjcar is prepared to
look for an off-season move
away from the English
Premier League if he does not
play more regularly before the
end of the season.
The Croatia international
has started only two league
games for Spurs this season,
with seven substitute appearances. Despite that, Kranjcar
has scored two winning goals.
Speaking to The Associated
Press after Croatia’s 0-0 draw
with France late on Tuesday,
Kranjcar said he will be “trying
to find a football club where I
can play regularly, like any
footballer would” if his situation does not improve.
Asked if he would consider a
move away from England,
Kranjcar said “I would, yeah,
to learn another language as
well” but that it “depends who
wants me, if anyone wants
me.”
Kranjcar last started a
league match on February 12.
“I obviously miss football,”
he said. “I’m not in my best
shape because I don’t play
week in, week out. So obviously those 90 minutes (against
France) help towards getting
fitter and hopefully get some
more chances.”
Kranjcar, who turns 27 in
August, was not prepared to
keep warming the bench.

best years. If I was a young lad,
obviously I would wait for my
chance, especially being in a
big club like Spurs,” he said.
“But, obviously, 27, 28, 29

“Everyone knows I can play

a sub (at the moment).”
Kranjcar, who won the FA
Cup playing under coach
Harry Redknapp when they
were with Portsmouth in
2008, was not about to kick
his manager’s door down,
despite his evident frustration.
“It’s not mine to (question)
the manager’s decision, it’s
mine to respect and to wait for
my opportunity and my
chance,” Kranjcar said. “He’s
the one who takes the blame
for good and bad results, and
obviously it’s going great this
season again.”
Kranjcar’s frustration was
greater because, when he does
get the chance to play, he produces.
He scored winning goals
against
Bolton
and
Sunderland in consecutive
league games last month. He
has also scored five goals for
Croatia this season, including
both in a 2-1 win away against
Israel in Euro 2012 qualifying.
He has 14 goals in 64 games
for Croatia.
“It’s the most frustrating situation I have had,” Kranjcar
said.

Leino strikes a
brace for Flyers
MIAMI MASTERS
AP
PITTSBURGH
VILLE Leino scored twice in
the third period, and the
Philadelphia Flyers rallied to
beat the Pittsburgh Penguins
5-2 on Tuesday night and stay
atop the Eastern Conference.
Philadelphia has led the
conference and the Atlantic
Division since Jan. 8, but the
Penguins had won eight of 10
and had a chance to tie their
cross-state rivals at 100
points with a regulation victory.
Goals by Jeff Carter, Scott
Hartnell, and Claude Giroux
and 25 saves by Sergei
Bobrovsky prevented that for
the Flyers, who won in regulation for the second time in
seven games.
Alex Kovalev and Tyler
Kennedy

last eight

MIAMI
THE world’s top tennis trio
strolled into the quarterfinals of the ATP and WTA
Miami Masters, following a
two-hour afternoon rain
interruption which sent
Tuesday’s programme well
into Wednesday morning.
Number one Rafael Nadal
lived up to expectations as
the Spaniard strives for a
first Miami title. The top
seed reached the last eight
over Ukrainian Alexandr
Dolgopolov 6-1, 6-2 in just
59 minutes.
“It was very, very, very
humid. That’s why I’m
sweating a lot,” said Nadal,
who said the long wait in the
locker room did not bother
him as he finally went onto
court.
It was a similar outcome
for second seed Novak
Djokovic as he won his 21st
consecutive match of the
season over compatriot and
Davis Cup teammate Viktor
Troicki 6-3, 6-2.
“I try not to think that he’s
my good friend, that that
might affect my performance on the court,” said
Djokovic. “We are both professional, we both want to
win the match.”
Third seed Roger Federer
did not get on the court until
well after midnight - the latest start of his career came at
12:37 am - but wasted no
time in a 6-3, 6-1 hammering of Belgian Olivier Rochus
lasting just 51 minutes.
The Swiss earned his efficient win in the early hours
of the morning to send his
2011 record to 21-3 as he
beat his good friend and long
time opponent for the eighth
time straight.
“It was extremely hot yesterday, and then today really
late,” Federer said. “That’s
what tennis is all about.
“We don’t know when we
play and we don’t have a set
schedule, and so we have to
be able to adapt and warm
up several times for the
match, because you never
know what’s going to happen beforehand.”
Former US Open winner
Juan Martin del Potro was at
a loss for words after a disappointing
fourth-round
ouster at the hands of
American Mardy Fish 7-5, 76 (7/5).
It was a similar
outcome for second seed Novak
Djokovic as he won
his 21st consecutive match of the
season over compatriot and Davis
Cup teammate Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-2.
“It’s difficult to say something now because I just lost
a very, very tough match,”
said the Argentine.
“Maybe in two or three
days I can say my level at the
moment and what I expect
for the future.”
Spanish sixth seed David
Ferrer beat compatriot
Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-2
and South African Kevin
Anderson put out American
John Isner 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).
Number seven Tomas
Berdych battled to get past
German Florian Mayer 6-3,
2-6, 7-6 (7/4) and next plays
Nadal in a re-run of the 2010
Wimbledon final.
There was third-round
disappointment for JoWilfried Tsonga as the
French 15th seed was unable
to recover in his rain-interrupted match from Monday
against Dolgopolov.
Dolgopolov finished off
the final set to post a 6-7
(2/7), 6-4, 7-5 win and set up
a date with Nadal.
In women’s play, battling
Kim Clijsters saved five
match points to overhaul
Serb Ana Ivanovic 7-6 (7/4),
3-6, 7-6 (7/5) to reach the
quarter-finals.
Ivanovic, a former world
number one and French
Open champ, led 5-2 in the
final set before second seed
Clijsters began her fightback.
The Belgian rallied in
championship style to earn
her place in the last eight of
the last hardcourt event
prior to the start of the clay
campaign.
“Because I have been on
the tour for many years, you
realise that you have to keep
trying until the last point is
played,” said Clijsters. “In
tennis, that’s sometimes
probably the frustrating part
about it.
“It’s never over until that
last shot is played. Even if it’s
5-1. Okay, you start a game
0-0. She has to win four
points.”
German hope Andrea
Petkovic began fulfilling her
promise with an upset of
Serbian sixth seed Jelena
Jankovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Federer’s match was
pushed back by an almost
three and a half hour
marathon women’s match
which was won by Russia’s
Maria Sharapova.
Sharapova, the 16th seed,
was broken ten times and
treated by a trainer after
rolling her ankle as she outlasted Alexandra Dulgheru
3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/5).
Hurricanes 3, Capitals 2.
SO
At Washington, Jeff Skinner
scored a goal and converted
his shootout attempt to lift
Carolina to a win against
Washington.
Skinner’s goal tied the
game at 2 less than two minutes into the third period,
when his seemingly innocuous shot knuckled past goalie
Semyon Varlamov.
Jussi Jokinen also scored
for the Hurricanes, and
Tuomo Ruutu converted the
deciding shootout attempt.
Cam Ward had 38 saves.
The Capitals did not convert a shootout chance, Ward
stopped shots by Alex
Ovechkin
and
Nicklas
Backstrom.
Bruins 3, Blackhawks 0
At Boston, Tim Thomas
stopped 32 shots for his ninth
shutout of the season, and
Mark Recchi moved into 12th
on the NHL’s career points
list as Boston beat Chicago.
Zdeno Chara and Johnny
Boychuk scored 2 minutes,
20 seconds apart in the second period to break a scoreless tie, and Recchi assisted
on the second goal to give him
1,532 points—one more than
Paul Coffey. Nathan Horton
made it 3-0 in the third.
It was the 25th shutout of
Thomas’ career, and his second in three games. He has
allowed just two goals in four
games to drop his leagueleading goals-against average
to 1.96.
Corey Crawford made 31
saves for the defending
Stanley Cup champions.
Blue Jackets 3, Panthers
2
At Columbus, Ohio, Maksim
Mayorov had the lone goal in
his first NHL shootout, and
Columbus’ Steve Mason
stopped all three Florida
attempts.
Mason stopped Mike
Santorelli
and
Sergei
Samsonov to seal the win and
end the Blue Jackets’ home
losing skid at six and overall
slide at four.
Scottie
Upshall
and
Antoine Vermette scored in
regulation for Columbus,
which also ended a string of
six consecutive shootout loss.
Evgeny Dadonov and David
Booth had goals for Florida,
which lost its sixth in a row.
Maple Leafs 4, Sabres 3
At
Toronto,
Mikhail
Grabovski scored in the second period, rookie Nazem
Kadri added two assists to
help Toronto top Buffalo.
Dion Phaneuf, Darryl
Boyce and Clarke MacArthur
had the other goals for
Toronto. MacArthur also
added two assists.
Thomas Vanek, Jason
Pominville
and
Rob
Niedermayer scored for
Buffalo.
Lightning 5, Senators 2
At Tampa, Florida, Martin St.
Louis and Dominic Moore
both scored two goals to lead
Tampa Bay past Ottawa.
Steven Stamkos had an
empty-net goal, and Simon
Gagne had two assists for the
Lightning, who have won two
in a row after a four-game
skid.
Ottawa, last in the Eastern
Conference, got goals from
Jason Spezza and Milan
Michalek. The Senators
dropped to 6-4-1 over their
last 11.
Canucks 3, Predators 1
At Nashville, Tennessee, Alex
Burrows scored twice in the
third period to lead
Vancouver over Nashville.
Vancouver clinched the top
spot in the Western
Conference and set a franchise record with their ninth
straight road win.
Mike Fisher scored for
Nashville.
Vancouver dominated the
game’s third period, outshooting the Predators 14-2.
Canadiens 3, Thrashers 1
At Montreal, Roman Hamrlik
and Mathieu Darche scored
11 seconds apart in the first
period to end Montreal’s
three-game goal drought.
Hamrlik scored Montreal’s
first goal in 10 days at 12:56 in
to end a 199-minute, 1-second
scoring drought. That goal
had not even been announced
when Darche made it 2-0 at
13:07.
Carey Price made 27 saves
for Montreal, losing a shutout
bid 8:35 into the third on a
goal by Nik Antropov.
Andrei Kostitsyn scored
into an empty net with 1:20
remaining.

IN an unbearable season of
losses, Cleveland got the win
it wanted most. The Cavaliers
took down LeBron James.
Despite blowing a 23-point
lead, the Cavs battled back and
beat the Miami Heat 102-90
on Tuesday night, getting a
dose of revenge against James,
who was making his second
homecoming visit to Cleveland
since leaving the city as a free
agent last summer.
J.J. Hickson scored 21
points and Anthony Parker
had 20 for the Cavs, who were
embarrassed by James and
the Heat 118-90 on December
2—a night when Cleveland
fans unleashed their hatred
on the superstar.
This time, James left the
floor hanging his head. He
finished with 27 points, 12
Rockets 112, Nets 87
At Newark, Kyle Lowry had
16 points, 10 assists and seven
rebounds and the Houston
Rockets moved within two
games of the final playoff
berth in the Western
Conference with a victory
over the New Jersey Nets.
Kevin Martin added 20
points as the Rockets (39-35)
posted their sixth win in
seven games and inched closer to idle eighth-place
Memphis (41-33) with eight
games left in the regular season.
Brook Lopez had 22 points
for the Nets, who lost their
third in a row and seventh in
eight games. Deron Williams
missed his sixth straight
game for New Jersey (23-50),
which has lost 50 games for
the second straight season.
Thunder 115, Warriors 114
At Oklahoma City, Kevin
Durant scored 39 points,
Russell Westbrook hit the winning free throw with 11.4 seconds left and the Oklahoma
City Thunder finished their
longest homestand of the season with a victory against the
Golden State Warriors.
J.J. Hickson scored
21 points and
Anthony Parker
had 20 for the
Cavs.
Durant scored eight of
Oklahoma City’s nine points
in overtime, but served as a
decoy to create room along
the right side of the lane as
Westbrook drove to the basket
and got fouled. Westbrook
missed his first free throw, but
made the second to put the
Thunder on top.
Monta Ellis’ jumper from
the top of the key was wide
right at the final buzzer.
Kings 116, Suns 113
At Sacramento, Marcus
Thornton scored 24 points
and had 11 rebounds for the
Sacramento Kings, who won
their season-high fourth
straight by defeating the
Phoenix Suns.
Despite the strong possibility of the team moving to
Anaheim next season, the
Kings are enjoying their best
stretch of the season, winning
five of six games.
The loss was the third
straight and eighth in 11
games for the Suns, who are
10th in the conference and
trail
the
eighth-place
Memphis Grizzlies by 4 1/2
games with nine games
remaining in the regular
season.

Ponting
vows to
be good
teammate
PTI
MELBOURNE
A “LIFE-CHANGING”
chapter of his cricket
career over after stepping
down as captain, Ricky
Ponting says he will now
focus on becoming a great
teammate and a guy that
new Australian skipper
Michael Clarke can rely
upon to give “something
special.”
Ponting, who guided
Australia to back-to-back
World Cup titles in 2003
and 2007, quit as captain
on Tuesday, five days after
the team was knocked out
of the ongoing edition of
the mega event in the
quarterfinal stage.
“Being captain of Australia
has not only changed my life,
it has also taught me the real
significance of values, the
true meaning of accountability, a deeper respect for
mateship and an overwhelming feeling of national
pride and responsibility,”
Ponting wrote in the ‘The
Australian’.
“It has also taught me to
become a teacher, a trusted confidant and a better
friend. You develop skills
that you never thought
you had, ensuring you
provide your team with
the best possible environment and direction to be
successful,” he said.
Looking back at his
tenure as captain Ponting
said the happiest memories of rein were two
World Cup titles and
Ashes clean sweep of
2006-07.
“The most
untouchable highlight is
what I have shared with
my teammates and the
support group around us.
Our record is a benchmark for success in any
sport.

MICHAEL CLARKE was
appointed Australia’s Test
and one-day captain on
Wednesday, a day after Ricky
Ponting bowed to pressure
and quit after the country’s
World Cup exit.
Long seen as heir-apparent,
the stylish batsman, who
turns 30 on Saturday, will
jump into the role immediately, leaving this week for a
tour of Bangladesh.
Ponting will also be on the
plane, taking orders from his
former deputy, after being
named in the squad to play
three one-dayers.
Shane Watson will be
Clarke’s vice-captain with
Cameron White remaining
the Twenty20 skipper.
“First of all can I say what
an honour it is to be named
captain and also a huge surprise to see Ricky stand
down,” Clarke said at a press
conference.
“I was very much unaware
of where he was at and didn’t
know he was going to stand
down. It was a huge surprise
to me.
“I know Ricky will allow me
to do my job to the best of my
ability,” he added. “We want
to be the best team in all
forms and that is going to
take time.”
His Test reign will start in
August when he skippers a
tour of Sri Lanka.
Clarke, though, is not popular with Australian fans, and
polls published Wednesday
showed how cool the public
are to him.
According to the Sydney
Morning Herald, only 26 percent of 21,000 respondents in
an online poll favoured him to
be the new captain.

In the Sydney Daily
Telegraph, a survey of 8,500
readers placed him a distant
third behind Shane Watson
and Michael Hussey.
Ponting insisted Clarke was
the right man for the job, and
vowed to give him all the support he needed.
“He has done nothing
wrong when has stood in for
me over the past few years
and his record in T20 cricket
speaks for itself,” he said in a
column for The Australian
newspaper.
“I will be there in the background for him if he needs
me, but from today the Test
and one-day teams will be his
and I will be one of many
players who follow him onto
cricket grounds all over the
world.”
Asked how he will feel taking orders from a man who
used to be his deputy, Ponting
replied: “I’ve taken orders
most of my life, I’m pretty
used to it.”
Clarke was also endorsed
by cricket legend Richie
Benaud.
“I’d have Clarke, he’s vicecaptain, he’s done well the
times he’s been captain,”
Benaud told the Nine
Network.
Clarke made his professional debut for New South
Wales as an 18-year-old in the
1999-2000
Australian
domestic season.
He made the jump to the
national one-day team in
January
2003
against
England at Adelaide and was
chosen to make his Test debut
against India at Bangalore in
October 2004.
He thumped 151, helping
Australia to victory, invoking
comparisons
to
past
Australian greats Doug
Walters and Mark Waugh.
Since then, he has gone on
to play 69 Tests, scoring 4,742
runs, including 14 centuries,
with an average of 46.49. A
slow left-arm orthodox
bowler, Clarke has captured
21 wickets. In the one-day
game, he has collected 188
caps and 5,928 runs at an
average of 43.58, with 52
wickets to his name.

SRI LANKAN skipper Kumar
Sangakkara said it was an
emotional moment for the
team
as
Muttiah
Muralitharan played his last
ODI at home and hoped the
spin king continues his “fairytale” endings and finishes on
the winning side of the World
Cup.
Sangakkara also said the
Muralitharan has the knack
of scripting fairytale endings
as he did against New
Zealand by taking a wicket off
his last ball at home, when he
dismissed Scoot Styris, quite
like the way he got his 800th
Test wicket in his last match.
“It is quite amazing you
know, when you think why he
has such a fairytale ending.
Murali, you know, is an honest guy. He has no ego. He is a
good human being and a
great team man. He talks a lot
in the dressing room and he
peps everyone up. He is a
good guy and that’s why good
things happen to him.
Hopefully he will have a great
match in Mumbai,” a visibly
emotional Sangakkara said
after his side’s five wicket victory against New Zealand in
the semifinal Tuesday.
“It was an emotional
moment for us, for the team
and for the crowd with Murali
playing his last match at
home. When the magnitude
of the occasion hits you, it is
overwhelming. It is then you
realise that it is the last time
you are playing at home with
the world’s best bowler.”
Sangakkara said they wanted to give a fitting farewell to
the spin king, who took a lap
of honour after the victory.
“We really wanted to give
him a good send-off. Murali is
the icon of Sri Lanka, on the
field,
off
the
field.”
Sangakkara said Muralitharan was padded up in case
they had lost another wicket.
“Yes, he was padded up. We
needed just two hits and
Murali is very good at that. So
we thought if a wicket falls, he
can go and hit those runs. But
it was not needed and when
the winning runs came we
just enjoyed the moment.”

DANIEL VETTOTI has called
it a day from Twenty20

and lost by five wickets to a
superior side.
Captain Daniel Vettori,
who epitomises the Kiwis’
pragmatic no frills style, said
his top order had not scored
enough runs and his bowlers
had not broken through
soon enough.
“Obviously we are incredibly disappointed. We fought
so hard to stay in the tournament,” he told the postmatch news conference. “It’s
just all about taking wickets,
that is the only way we were
going to win the game.” New
Zealand’s strength was its
marvellously athletic fielding, which set new standards
in the circle where Martin
Guptill was routinely brilliant. However, their potentially explosive top-order
batting never fired against a
good attack apart from the
group
match
against
Pakistan. Although the lower
order routinely produced
useful runs, they came up
short on Tuesday against the
pace of Sri Lanka’s Lasith
Malinga and the guile of
Ajantha Mendis.
Tim Southee, clearly benefiting from the guidance of
new bowling coach and former South African great
Allan Donald, was the pick
of the bowlers and Vettori
and Jacob Oram bowled well
in the knockout stages.
“The batsmen are starting
to develop and understand
their roles. Of the players,
Ross Taylor, Jacob Oram,
Tim Southee and Nathan
McCullum stood out,”
Vettori said.
