AUGUST 2016
From Our Parish Council President - Steve Margarites
Happy Summer to everyone!!
I pray you all are safe and keeping cool and hydrated this summer with your favorite beverage of choice.
I just want to update you briefly on some of the past month’s events.
We celebrated our patron Saint’s name day. His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America celebrated Vespers with us for St. Paraskevi. Except for the rain, the evening was beautiful and the church filled.
The next day for liturgy the church was also filled to capacity. What a great sight to see.
This past Saturday we had our annual Community Picnic in the luxurious and spacious picnic area of our beloved St
Paraskevi church. The day was spectacular. We ate, danced, played a few games, shot off fireworks, and even gave a
few cars away just for fun. Ok I went too far again and exaggerated a little. I gave a few matchbox cars away not real
ones. But next year a real car could be given away!! You never know.
The Festival preparations are well under way. Pam and her crew are creating a really great event. Please check our Facebook page and look at Father Lou’s emails for details on how to get involved.
Grand Raffle tickets are now being sold please reserve your tickets, they’re selling like hotcakes don’t get shut out. The
top 3 prizes are cars!! REAL ONES not matchbox. 1st prize is a new BMW, 2nd prize is a lease BMW convertible, and
3rd prize is 6 weekends with a new Ferrari… How cool would you look driving a Ferrari and in the jump seat a wheel
of cheese!!! Doesn’t get better than that! Ok I went too far again. I have a habit of doing that… I’m sorry not everyone
can have a wheel of cheese. J
And now for something completely different!!
A Past President speaking to us again.
This month’s voice from the past is coming from arguably the best looking President to date that has spoken to us. Sorry guys you have been upstaged.
Teri Addamo was President from 2005-2007. She served the PC for 22 yrs. (that’s like 154 yrs. in real time). She has
held so many positions in this community, and has dedicated herself to this parish like many others have done over the
years. I am honored to know her and consider her a friend. You can see her almost every Sunday standing in the corner
by the baptismal font. A wonderful lady and a fellow PC President (so in the words of Ed McMahon) HEEEERRRREEEEEE’SSSSS TERRI
OH I almost forgot… God Bless you all and Eat More Cheese
From Our Past Parish Council President Hello Everyone,
I was asked by our President Steve Margarites, to write this month’s message about my wonderful years at St. Paraskevi.
In April of 1959, my parents Harry and Katina Kontos, moved their family from Brooklyn to Commack. When we arrived at St. Paraskevi Church in Huntington Station, we were greeted with open arms by the members. It was a small community at the time. My parents became stewards of the church and their involvement with the church began. My father joined the
Parish Council and my mother the Ladies Philoptochos. My parents owned luncheonettes in Commack and San Remo, and
sometimes parish council members would drop by for a cup of coffee and discuss activities of the church with them.
One Sunday after church, I asked my mother why Fr. Eliades called out my sisters name (Irene) saying “EIRINI PASI
“and not mine. Is she being bad? She told me that it means “Peace to All”. Not to be outshined by my sister, that Easter I sang
the Christos Anesti louder than Fr. Gus so I could be heard. My sister and I attended Greek & Sunday school. I remember the
Sunday breakfasts that were prepared by the mothers and the smell of the bacon, eggs and pancakes within the church and
could not wait to receive communion and get my breakfast.
In December of 1963, our church which was white and of wooden construction with beautiful stained glass windows and
a high white steeple had burned to the ground. That image will last with me forever. We were all devastated. From that time,
until our present St Paraskevi church was constructed, liturgy services were held in neighboring churches and schools. We
were able to retrieve a wooden cross and a few ecclesiastical items which still remain in our church to this day.
I recall one year my mother with some ladies from the PTO, sewed Evzon Tsolia and Amalia costumes for Greek School
students so that they can march in the parade in costume. One year we marched in the cold pouring rain. At that time, many
furriers were members of the church. Several ladies were wearing their fur coats. Well, some spectators yelled out to us “Look
at them they look like Wet Cats” because our coats were drenched. We draped our coats over the back seats of the bus to dry on
the ride back and had a few laughs.
Our community brought Greek Culture and Hellenism to the Town of Huntington with our Food Festivals. I remember
the Bazaars in the 70’s. Pulaski road was lined with cars. You had to walk a mile to get to the church. There was no
Waldbaum’s for easy parking. You could hear the bouzouki playing as you approached the church parking lot, which was filled
with tents. The loukoumades line was so long because the ladies were preparing them on hibachis. Even Telly Savalas paid us
a visit one year. Everyone was trying to get a picture with him including me. LOL…
I remember past years of St. Paraskevi’s Nameday. Coach buses would come from Pennsylvania and the Tri-State area to
celebrate her Nameday. The church was filled to capacity and worshipers would be standing in the parking lot waiting to enter
the church to venerate St. Paraskevi’s icon and to visit the Grotto-Shrine.
My parent’s faith, dedication and commitment inspired me to become an active member of the church. My family and I
have been blessed with many sacraments at St. Paraskevi ; 40 day blessings, baptisms and marriages. I was a Greek and Sunday school teacher, PTO President and GOYA advisor. In the 70s, the gym was filled with dividers to separate the classes, and
the PTO ladies would bring refreshments to the classes with serving carts.
I served on the Parish Council for 22 consecutive years of which I was President for 3 years. I held positions such as 1st
and 2nd Vice President, Secretary and Assistant Secretary. During my presidency, wonderful ministries such as The Good
Neighbor Fund, The Homeless Program, The Greek-American Pre-School and Kassiani’s Food Pantry were established. In
addition, we purchased a parcel of land next to the church for future expansions. Presently, I am involved with the Ladies
Philoptochos. For my years of service, His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America bestowed upon me the Medal
of St. Paul.
Our church has expanded since that little wooden church in Huntington Station. We have a beautiful Grotto-Shrine, Seven days of Creation depicted on our
dome, the expanded Narthex, the choir loft, the relics of St. Paraskevi and St. Panteleimon, St. Gerasimos slipper, additional classrooms, the youth room and the
Charles Tsunis Memorial Garden. All these wonderful accomplishments were
brought about by the dedication, support, love, efforts, fundraisers and donations of
past and present Clergy, Presidents and Parishioners. It takes a community within a
church. St. Paraskevi is filled with “Time, Treasure and Talent”
I am blessed and fortunate to be part of such a loving community in which I
have many wonderful friends and such fond memories. I pray God grants me the
ability to continue to serve St. Paraskevi for many more years.
I wish you and your families’ Health and God’s blessings.

First of all I would like to congratulate our Graduates once
again Gina and Christina Marcisak. As co-presidents they
have been an inspiration and have set a good example for all
our GOYAns. This year the GOYAns have been very busy
in various activities and community service programs.
Here is a partial list of some of their accomplishments.

As you can see our GOYA kids are busy year around with a
balance of fun activities as well as community service projects. We thank all our GOYAns who continue to set the
bar high for all other groups. They respect each other and
everyone in the community by their commitment and faith
to God, Jesus Christ and St. Paraskevi. Thank you to all the
parents who have stepped up to help out throughout the
year, and a big thank you to Fr. Lou for all of his love and
support.
GOYA is a ministry comprised of 13-18 year olds. They
participate in many fundraisers and charitable events and
community service programs. GOYA also serves as a social
setting where teens can share their heritage, faith, language
and traditions within their church. This is accomplished in
our own community, as well activities through the Archdiocese and Long Island Inter-GOYA. We also have many
sports programs which include Soccer, Volley Ball and Basket Ball.
We encourage all teens of the community to become members of the Saint Paraskevi GOYA. The experiences you
will have in the 5 years will never be forgotten and the
friends you will make with your fellow GOYA members
will be with you for the rest of your life. Please see the registration form in
this message or you
can obtain a form
on the church’s
