Daily Levy
stop press!
The Daily Shooter levy will change as from 1 January 2011 to
$3.00 per person per day (including GST). This will be the same
for all disciplines (Skeet, DTL, Sporting, Compak, ISSF and School
Shooting). It is hoped that this will simplify the collection of this
levy. Clubs will still be required to identify what type of shoot the
levy is for as $2.00 will be split into general NZCTA income and
$1.00 will be put into a reserve account dedicated to that discipline
where the funds came from. Skeet and DTL will be combined as it
is often difficult to separate this at club level.
Registration fee
Clubs are reminded that shooters must pay a NZCTA registration
after they attend two club shoots in any one year. Clubs are asked
to encourage these people to pay their registration fee. There is a
reduced fee for new members for the remainder of this year. This
is $37.50 for full members, $25.00 for a Family members, $20 for
a Junior and $15 for a Social member. Any shooter who has not
paid their 2010 registration fee that was a member last year (or
any year going back 5 years) must pay the full fee applicable to
their category. We do not give discounts for those who pay late

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
YOU AND YOUR CLUB
I have had the privilege of travelling
around several clubs lately and
have been very impressed with the
improvements in facilities that are
taking place for the benefit of all
members of the NZCTA.
Many of these improvements have been
completed by a dedicated few people who
are unselfishly giving up their personal
time for the benefit of us all. I would like to
encourage all members on a local level to
get involved in your local club affairs and
offer your help to club officials, especially
those younger members who may be too
shy to step forward; I can assure you your
offer of help will be greatly appreciated.
Local community clay target club assets
have been built up over a long period of
time, through local community involvement,
sometimes over 100 years. The commitment
by members and their families to supporting
these assets is exemplary.
The NZCTA also has made a major effort
in supporting local clubs over an extended
period also.
However it is disappointing, to see the
number of unregistered shooters who are
“FREELOADING” on the local club, by not
paying either their NZCTA registration
fee, or their local club sub. Some of these
people are continuing to do this selfishly on
a regular basis, falling on the good nature
of the Secretary when entering, with some
weak excuse.
The club’s responsibility is quite clear as
far as the 2 shoot Rule is concerned for new
intending members. You must pay your
NZCTA Registration on the third occasion
you shoot in any year at any club. To local
club members I ask for your support to
encourage these people to pay their
registration fee. Many of you know who
they are. NZCTA Officials don’t like acting
as Policemen, so would all clubs at their
next committee meeting, check your local
shoot record book, consult your secretary,
and approach these people when they
next enter an event at your local club. These
people are freeloading on the NZCTA public
liability insurance that you have personally
paid for, and also your personal family time
that has supported your club.
There are previously registered
competitors who have not paid this year’s
subscription also. Please encourage
these people to front up on the next
occasion they visit your club.
At our last NZCTA Executive Meeting
the rules regarding the payment of
daily levies have been amended
and clarified. The daily levy for all
disciplines has now been simplified
to avoid confusion. The new daily fee
is now $3. This is split to $2 to the
NZCTA general administration fund
and $1 going to a separate travel
fund for the respective discipline.
Some clubs have for many years
been under a misapprehension that
levies don’t have to be paid for certain
“novelty “events. Daily levies must be
paid for all competition events at club
level including “duck shooter “ events and
“Christmas “ shoots. Daily levies must also
be paid on “cosmopolitan” shoots held on
registered club grounds.
Currently your Executive is contacting
prospective sponsors for sponsorship
of NZCTA national events. Our job is
made so much easier when your support
of these sponsors’ products makes it a
win win situation for both the sponsor
and the NZCTA. Sponsorship is not a
donation. Sponsors expect a return
on their investment and a continuing
growth in sales. When you next purchase
ammunition, a firearm, shooting apparel, or
a new chainsaw for your wife to use while
you are away shooting, please support the
sponsors who support you.
Recently I attended the North Island
Secondary School Championships at
Waikato Clay Target Club. What a marvellous
spectacle it was with all school teams in
uniform and exemplary behaviour from
our young members. Team coaches and
managers should be congratulated for
converting these students into role models
for our sport. I talked to one Principal
supporting his team, and he stated the
NZCTA had turned “rabble into gentlemen.”
By the next Executive Meeting a new
draft of the “Range Manual” will be ready for
approval and will be ready to be released to
clubs as a discussion document. By March
of next year the manual will be adopted by
clubs following discussion at the AGM. In
addition to the manual, all new clubs and
new ranges must be fully compliant, but
existing clubs must comply where possible
and manage non-compliant areas. No
clubs will be closed by the NZCTA who do
not comply.
International Events are shortly on
the horizon for our members. The four
Commonwealth Games athletes have been
supported by the NZCTA, granting them
$1000 each to be spent on ammunition or
targets for their preparation for the Games.
We wish them every success and hope that
they do us proud in their event. In February
we are hosting the World English Sporting
Championship at TVDA ground near
Thames. Many hours of dedicated work
will culminate in a tremendous spectacle
showcasing the NZCTA to the World.
Full details can be found on the Website
(www.wesc2011.com).
Moving the NZCTA and Executive
into the 21st century has now spread to
computerisation of shooter records to be
available at local club level. This will be a
major focus for our 5 year strategic plan.
What is proposed is:
• Step 1 from 2011 shooters will have an
individual bar code on their handicap
sticker of their handicap book.
• Step 2 is that in 2011 the NZCTA
Identifies and adopts a national
computer programme.
• Step 3 is that during 2012 year trials
at club level begin using a bar code
system.
• Step 4 At no determined date full
computerisation of shoots at club level
with a plastic swipe card replacing the
current shooter’s handicap book.
This will ensure all gradings, meterages,
current registration fees, and classifications
will be available at every registered club
attended. A common computer system

Nelson
Marlborough
We were ready, the grounds were
ready, all that was needed were shooters,
great targets and hopefully some fine
weather. What could be simpler? Well,
Saturday was pretty much perfect. With
55 shooters in attendance, and overcast
and still conditions made those orange
bits of clay irresistible. As was proven by
the outstanding shooting of a total of 7
possibles in the Double Rise and 6 possibles
in the Minis.
Sunday
Dawned not so great on the weather
front – actually that’s an understatement!
Another overcast, still day, but just to make
sure everyone was having fun, patches of
rain, heavy rain and really heavy rain. Now
drenched and soggy under foot, made
the day’s programme an even bigger
challenge. But again, some impressive
shooting throughout the day saw 5 squads
with possible scores head out to shoot off
the Single Rise event. After an epic battle
that didn’t finish until after dark, and saw
an amazing 311 tgts shot, and shooting the
last 80tgts together, were Daniel Warnock
and Graeme Ede. Congratulations to both
shooters, with Graeme taking out HOA and
Daniel 1st A Grade. A record for our Club –
the most targets shot in a shoot off.
Our congratulations go to all shooters
who shot so well over the weekend. With
many thanks to the large number of you
who travelled so far to get here. Thanks for
coming and we look forward to seeing you
here again. As always, our club has a strong
volunteer base that puts in huge amounts
of time before, during and after an event
like this, thank you all for a job well done.
But the last word belongs to an
outstanding shooter, who achieved a
personal goal, by finishing only one target
down for the weekend (234/235). Our
many congratulations go to High Gun

Seven squads contested the first day of the 200 skeet weekend.
Forecasts were for bad weather and heavy rain. Thankfully this did
not eventuate and while the light conditions were not that good
at the end of both days, it was still quite good for a mid-winter
event. Some very good shooting was witnessed by all as Steve
Cooper and Dave Da Silva finished day one clean on 100 straight.
Scott Lewis led the B grade on 92 with Councillor Mike Holmes hot
on his heals with a 91. C grader Scott Verran from Tauranga with 90
led Amy van Bysterveldt on 79.
Day 2. Weather still good and today 10 squads appeared to
contest the second hundred. This would put pressure on the to
skeet fields in use but was not seen as a problem. Things moved
along smoothly and a decision was made to re-hash squads to
allow the North/South entries to finish in good time so that bad
light would not affect their scores. Naturally this did not meet with
the approval of some and seven people withdrew from the last 50.
This decision on light proved to be unfounded and in hindsight
was unfortunate on those affected. Next year the third skeet field
will be prepared and employed to make sure this issue does not
repeat itself.
Going into the last 50 targets Steve Cooper and Colin Heard
were all tied up on one down. Steve could not hold on with a 47,
not enough to hold Heard (or Shag as the Rotorua boys call him).
Colin rose to the occasion and shot the last 50 clean.
Colin maintained his great form to record 99 + 99 for 198 and
the weekend HOA win.
B grade was headed by Scott Lewis with a fine 186 after a great
tussle with Mike Holmes. C grade was won by Trevor Bracken with
a credible 143. A good result for a very new shooter. A highlight
for the locals was Allan Neill’s performance. Allan recorded a
99/100 on Sunday after missing low eight in his fourth round. Very
disappointing for Al but still a very creditable performance and
put some pressure on some of the Rotorua A team regulars who
didn’t bring their best to this tournament.

RELOADERS
SUPPLIES 150
June 2010
Thames Clay Target Club
A terrible weather forecast with heavy rain and strong winds
obviously deterred a number of shooters from venturing out as
the numbers for this year’s event at 64 were well down on last
year. Despite that we were still very pleased to host shooters from
as far away as Northland (Bruce & Doreen Sanderson), as well as
Auckland, Waikato (even Cambridge/Te Kuiti) and BOP. Even with
heavy rain threatening possible flooding in the previous few days
we had great support from Whitianga. A very pleasing aspect was
the 16 Juniors and 6 ladies who competed.
With his recent passing, this was the first Reloaders 150 at which
Ron Dent was not present and the club gratefully acknowledges
the support Ron personally gave to the club as a competitor
and also with Reloaders Supplies Ltd as a sponsor. Many thanks
to Scotty Stonex for his help organizing the sponsorship at this
time, which must have been difficult for him both personally and
professionally.
The event was a 150 target Single Rise competition shot over
three rounds of 50 targets. The first round saw 13 possibles of 50
shot by Doreen Sanderson, Mason Reed, Gavin Wenham, John
Farrow, Stan Whiteman, Deano Horn, Rob Anderson, Shawn Sands,
Brian Hartley, Ian Hovenden, Colin Kennedy, Bill Dunn and Martin
van de Wetering.
Round two produced eight possible scores from Deano Horn,
Shawn Sands, Les Clarke, Brian Hartley, Rob Andrews, Martin van
de Wetering, Natalie Curtis and Ian Marshall. That left four shooters
on a possible 100 (Deano Horn, Shawn Sands, Brian Hartley and
Martin van de Wetering) at lunch time.
The final round took its toll with most of the front runners but
produced another eight scores of 50 from Liam Buchanan, Amy
van Bysterveldt, Deano Horn, Gary Vittle, Rob Andrews, Colin
Kennedy, Natalie Curtis and Ian Marshall.
With Shawn, Brian and Martin all dropping a target, it left only
Deano Horn on a possible of 150 and the HOA in AA grade. 2nd in
AA was Brian Hartley and 3rd Martin van de Wetering. With only
one trophy prize each, Shawn Sands took out the Junior prize and
trophy with his 149/150. 4th was Ian Marshall (148) and 5th Ian
Hovenden (148) after a shoot off that also included young junior
shooter Liam Buchanan.
In A grade 1st was Colin Kennedy on 148 followed by Rob
Andrews (147) and 3rd Bill Smith (146), 4th Mason Reed (146) and
Doreen Sanderson (146). In B grade 1st was Andrew Welch (145),
2nd Deborah Pritchard (145), 3rd William Dunn (143), 4th Amy van
Bysterveldt (143) and 5th Glenn Ramsay (142). C grade saw 1st go
to Campbell Jolley with a fine 140, followed by Brian Boult (139),
3rd Ben Naylor (137), 4th Kevin Storey (130) and 5th Gavin Naylor
(129).
The Ladies was won by Natalie Curtis with 148 after shooting
most of her first 50 single barrel following a gun break down and
during which she dropped her only two targets of the day. Juniors
was won by Shawn Sands (149), Veterans Rob Anderson (148) and
the Super Vet trophy went to Colin Kennedy

Rex Innis Memorial
Thames Clay Target Club Inc
1st A grade Steve Cooper
HOA Chris Cassin
1st C grade Glenn Ramsay
Over the weekend of the 29th and 30th
May 2010 the Rex Innis Memorial Skeet was
held at the Thames Club, for the first time
in May. In all the previous years this event
has been held in April, just prior to the start
of Duck Shooting, which was a real passion
of Rex Innis’. This is a prestigious event for
the club as Rex was a life member of the
Thames Club and a very strong supporter
of clay target shooting in the local region,
so this skeet event was established in his
memory some years ago after his death.
Rex never got to see the new Thames Club
grounds, which he would be very proud of.
The weekend weather was forecast to
be reasonable for this time of the year. With
light winds, a changeable light at times
and an annoying late afternoon sun, there
was enough to challenge the shooters who
attended from far and near. It was very
pleasing for the Thames Club members to
be able to host shooters from as far away
as Northland, Hawkes Bay, New Plymouth
and even Timaru. The numbers attending
also showed an acceptance of the new
date, away from the Duck Shooters’ events
and opening day, with 41 competitors on
Saturday and 46 for the Rex Innis 100 on
Sunday.
With 2 skeet fields in operation, both
were very busy days to get through the 7-8
squads for 100 targets each. With only a few
problems, this was achieved in reasonable
time, although the late afternoon sun
made High 1 and Low 8 difficult targets in
the last round for most (unless the cloud
cover gave some assistance).
With a new 3rd skeet field due to come
into operation shortly, the Thames Club will
handle this event in a far easier manner in
the future and there are plans afoot for a 4th
field to add to the facilities. The objective
in the near future is to be able to offer
100 to 150 targets on a club practice day
(ie Saturday) along with 100 skeet as part
of the club programme on the next day,
Sunday. This would give skeet enthusiasts
the chance to shoot 200-250 targets over
a weekend for some months of the year.
Many thanks to club members present for
their work over this weekend and to all the
visiting shooters who attended and gave
their support.
Sunday 30th May –
Rex Innis 100 Skeet
Saturday 29th May –
100 target Skeet event
There were 33 possible rounds of 25
shot with 29 in A grade, one in B grade and
three in C grade. Over the whole day there
were two scores of 100 from Ray Everett
and Tony Truss (who had just returned
from winning the Aussie Skeet National).
There was only one score of 99 by Steve
Cooper, followed by three of 98 from
Graham Geater, Dean Everett and John
Dangen. After a doubles shoot off the day’s
event was won by Tony Truss as HOA and
Ray Everett was 1st A Grade, Steve Cooper
was 2nd A with Dean Everett 3rd. 1st in B
grade was Yvonne Slattery with a fine 94
followed by Colin Pritchard (93) and Josh
Wilson (92). C grade was won by young
Scott Verran (94) with Den Wilkins (92) 2nd
and Mike Boakes (88) 3rd.
Light conditions were a little more
testing this day with changeable breezes,
but again a great day’s shooting with 35
possibles of 25 (34 in A grade and only one
in B). However, there were three scores of
100 shot by Ray Everett, Chris Cassin and
Steve Cooper. Unfortunately Ray had to
leave to catch a flight home before the
shoot-offs could be held and therefore
fore-went the chance to win the Rex
Innis Trophy. Ultimately the shoot off was
won by Chris Cassin over Steve Cooper,
wresting this event title from Merv Pratt
who has held this for the last two years.
For the first time this year the winners
also received the specially struck Thames
Club Championship medals for HOA and
1st in each grade. 2nd in A grade was Ray
Everett and 3rd was Graham Geater on 99.
B grade was again won by Yvonne Slattery
on 92, followed by Andrew O’Hara (91) and
Richard Westlake (91). 1st in C grade was
Glenn Ramsay (88), 2nd Mike Boakes (87)
and 3rd Diane Boenders (81).
Over the two days’ shooting there
was just one 200 possible scored by Ray
Everett. This was followed by a 199 by
Steve Cooper and 198 from Tony Truss who
ended a very good long run following his
good form in Australia. In B grade Yvonne
Slattery ended the two days with a very
credible 186. The best C grade score was
Mike Boakes on 175

The prize table
The Repco 100 Handicap By Distance was hosted by Hutt Valley
on the 18th July. Many thanks to Derek Haggerty who arranged
the sponsorship by Repco, Upper Hutt. 34 shooters arrived to
contest the prizes up for grabs and although the weather didn’t
seem too bad, only a few shooters shot to their expectations.
Many blaming the constantly changing light conditions.
Repco Upper Hutt supplied a very good range of prizes down
to tenth place with a total value of approx $1000.00. As we
determined the ten places, we let the winners take first pick from
the prize table as peoples motoring needs vary considerably.
Highest score of the day with a very good 99 from 20 metres
was Dave Turner. 2nd place was Adam Green, after dropping three
targets in his first 25, Adam shot the rest of the day clean to score
97. Young Gregory Bentley was 3rd recording a 96. Four shooters
on 95’s had to shoot off with 4th place going to Rick Spence, Peter
Peryer taking 5th place, Sandy Rae 6th place and Sam Kirk taking
7th place.
The 94’s also had to shoot off to determine the last few place
getters with 8th place going to the man who arranged the
sponsorship, Derek Haggerty, Jamie Peryer taking 9th place and
Tim Anstey 10th place.
Thanks again to Derek Haggerty for arranging the sponsorship,
all the prizes were well received by their respective recipients.
Also, thanks to Robert Prince for setting the targets, the two Daves,
Turner & Hooch and to all others that pitched in with refereeing
and scoring to help run the day.
See you all next time
WANGANUI / RANGITIKEI
TEAM TROPHY SHOOT
Wanganui turned on some terrific
shooting weather for a July day, good
light, no wind and a great background
and for the first time shooting over a new
DTL layout which has been overlaid with
another Skeet field.
Teams competing were from Dannevirke
1, Woodville 2, Palmerston North 2 and
Wanganui/Rangitikei 3. All up 43 shooters
took part in this Annual Teams event for the
Wanganui, Manawatu, Waimarino districts.
Over the years the number of competing
teams has declined as we saw the demise
of the many clubs from this region, namely
Waimarino, Taihape, Marton, Ohingaiti,
Rangitikei, Rifle Rod &Gun.
All trophies used to be shot at individual
shoots and clubs, but they have now been
all combined into one day and shot for
at the club winning the majority of the
trophies.
These trophies are keenly shot for and
it is an ideal team event for clubs to blood
some newer team members.
Wanganui No1 won the Dalziel Skeet
Shield with an average result of 116/125
from Palmerston North No1 on 114 and
Woodville No1 on 110.
The 14 target Donnelly Gymcrack Trophy
was well shot by Palmerston North No1
with 68/70 followed closely by Wanganui
No3 on 67, Woodville No1 and Wanganui
No2, 64
There were some good individual scores
shot in the McGovern 25tgt Points Shield
and as teams the Wanganui No1 scored
360/375 to come in first followed a little
further back, Palmerston North No1 356
and Wanganui No2 353.
The Glenn Shield saw the highlight
of the day. This shield is shot for over
two 10 target visits to the traps. After
the first 10tgts there were 3 teams in
close contention leaving it up to the final
10tgts and shooters’ nerves to decide the
winning team. Wanganui No1 were able to
withstand the pressure and walked off the
mark with a creditable 100/100 followed in
second equal placing on 99/100 Woodville
No1 and Palmerston North No1.
The final shoot for the day was the
Sutherland 10pr Double Rise. This as
usual showed a mixed bag of scores with
5 shooters returning 18. As teams the
winning club was Woodville with an 83
only just holding out Wanganui No1 on 82
and Wanganui No2 close behind with 80

100 Pair Double Rise
July 24th 2010 - Gorge Road Clay Target Club
Waking up on Saturday
morning at 7am and looking out
the lounge window to see what
the weather gods had given us
for our Beretta 100 Pair Double
Rise day it was good to see
perfect conditions! There was
a nice frost on the ground, no
wind and the odd cloud around.
Members began arriving at
the club around 9am to crank
up the potbelly fire to keep all
the out-of-towners warm and
to set the traps up. Shooters
Colin Waghorn 1st A grade
started arriving just after 10am,
and were shooting by 10.20. By then the frost had gone and the
targets were flying perfectly. We eventually got nine five shooter
squads. Scores started coming in and after round one the top
score was 47/50 from Lindsay Stephenson (Rotorua), Gavin Searle
(Canterbury), Colin Waghorn and Brad Warnock (Gorge Road).
Round two saw Gavin Searle shoot another 47, Alan Wilson
(Gorge Road) 46, Dale Robertson (Gorge Road), Duncan Jefferies
(Darfield), Lindsay Rodgers (Southland), Tony Truss (Rotorua) and
Colin Waghorn shoot 45s. There was the odd puff of wind every
now and again but that didn’t affect the targets at all.
Lunch was being cooked by Jimmy, Val and Bronny from about
half past 11 and was ready for shooters before round three started.
Sausages, meat patties, mashed spuds, peas and salads were
dished up to enjoy. Round three saw Gavin Searle top score with
another 47, Colin Waghorn 46, Dale Robertson, Duncan Jefferies,
Tony Truss, Sheryl Anglem (Amberley) and Ewan Pirie (Mataura) all
shooting 45.
The last round we decided to go down to two fields as they are
both set up with a right and a left handed trap and we thought it
was the fairest way.
The top score of the day come from the last round with Colin
Waghorn dropping only two targets to shot a 48/50. Gavin was
“Mr Consistent” shooting another 47 as well as Tony Truss. 3.45pm
saw the end of the 100 pair for everyone. Only one shoot off had
to take place, and that only went 10 targets.
Beretta was our major sponsor for the day. They donated a 391
Urika semi automatic shot gun for HOA which was won by Gavin
Searle (188/200). 1st A grade Colin Waghorn (186), 2nd Tony Truss
(182), 3rd Brad Warnock (180), 4th Jeff Munro (177). B Grade 1st

LITTLE ERIC
I was having trouble with my computer. So I called Eric,
the 11-year-old next door, whose bedroom looks like
Mission Control and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a
couple of buttons and solved the problem.
As he was walking away, I called after him, ‘So what was
wrong?’ He replied, ‘It was an ID ten T error’
I didn’t want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquire,
‘An, ID ten T error? What’s that? In case I have to fix it
again.’
Eric grinned . . . ‘Haven’t you heard of an ID ten T error
before?’ ‘No’, I replied.
‘Write it down’, he said, ‘and I think you will figure it out’.
So I wrote down I D 1 0 T.
I used to like Eric, the little bastard.

New ISSF Opportunities
A NZCTA sanctioned “ISSF Development Squad” will be selected
and offered the opportunity to attend the Australian National ISSF
titles in Perth January 2011.
Squad to be made up of – 2 x Trench, 1 x Double Trap, 1 x ISSF
Skeet, 1 x Ladies Trench, 1 x Junior Trench, Shooters. (Maximum of
6 in total)
Selection will be over the four NZ Zone Events.
All events to count but your best two results to be used for
selection thus a minimum of two events must be attended to be
considered.
Points will be allocated in the following manner;
1st to 6th including the final in Trench, Skeet and Double Trap
will be allocated points as follows;
1st = 6 points, 2nd = 5 points, 3rd = 4 points, 4th = 3 points, 5th
= 2 points, 6th = 1 point.
Juniors and Ladies 1st = 3, 2nd = 2, 3rd = 1 point in their
individual competitions.
Category points will be considered on their own for selection
of Ladies or Juniors.
For all positions any tied scores will be shot off at the last event
if required, anyone not in attendance at the last event involved
in a tied situation will be treated as absent from any shoot off
situation.
NZCTA will pay individual entry fees into the Australian National
Championship event but funding beyond that will probably be on
a self funded basis unless other funding becomes available by the
time of selection of squad.
The development squad will be announced at the conclusion
of the final Zone event with the members being given the
opportunity to either accept or decline their position within the
squad. A commitment to either travel or not must be given within
7 days of announcement of squad and any positions not taken up
will be offered to the next competitor on the ranking list.
Intent!
The intention of creating this squad is to give our NZ shooters the
opportunity to travel to an international competition as part of
an official NZCTA group and compete in an environment outside
of our domestic circuit, hopefully giving them valuable exposure
and experience to a significantly higher standard of competition
which should help them to set new goals for achievement to higher
standards, greater opportunities and a thirst for commitment and
success at other events.
While I am sure some will say this opportunity has no real
funding attached to it therefore not much of an opportunity,
someone with the true drive to excel in this form of the sport will,
I am sure, look on this for what it is: a true opportunity to develop
and strive towards what they want to achieve within their chosen
discipline. I look forward to watching the true ISSF shooters strive
for their best successes over these four events and in doing so
will not only demonstrate a real commitment to succeed but also
will add real value to our local domestic competitions by adding
numbers of shooters to these events.
Sadly, in the past, many of the clubs conducting these events
have not had good competitor numbers at these events and
given their financial and time commitment to the ISSF disciplines
deserve better support from the shooters of NZ.
Who knows, this just might be the catalyst for some of our
standard discipline shooters to come and have a go at our Olympic
style sport.
It certainly will develop your mental discipline techniques and
improve any form of clay target shooting you may follow. You may
even find it is actually good fun as well!!! See you there.
Footnote:
Changes to our North Island ISSF Dates for 2011.
• January 7th – 9th North Island Double trap, Trench and Skeet.
At the Waikato Clay Target Club.
Changes to our National ISSF dates and format for 2011.
• February 17th – 20th South Island and NZ Trench and Skeet
Championships. At the Canterbury Clay Target Club.
• April 16th and 17th South Island and NZ Double Trap
Championship. At the Canterbury Clay Target Club.
This change has been brought about by the crowding of the
calendar in February. However it is the perfect opportunity to try
the separation of the Double trap events on to their own stand
alone weekend. This may prove to be a real success. Only time
will tell! It certainly will make it cheaper in time off work and
accommodation required. Again, this could see more involvement
of our standard discipline shooters into these events. So out of
something slightly negative, may come a huge positive!

McGREGOR SHIELD &
SHOOTERS WORLD TROPHY
McGregor Shield Winners, Nightcaps No 1 (L-R) Allan Sinclair, David Dickie, Tegan
Sutherland, Steve Diack, Russell Kelly
On the 4th July the Nightcaps Clay Target
Club held its Annual McGregor Shield and
Shooters World Trophy Match. The day really
couldn’t get much better for a winter shoot,
as the number of possibles showed.
Ten teams from as far north as Moa
Creek and Alexandra came to try to take
the McGregor Shield home with them, but
Nightcaps has had it on the wall for a year
and really didn’t want to lose it. After all the
scores were tallied up, Southland No 1 and
Nightcaps No 1 were 74 out of a possible
75, so off they went for a shoot off which
came down to the 2nd last target of the
last Southland shooter to miss which gave
the home team the glory for another year.
Well done to all the team shooters who shot
possibles in this match. Of the 50 shooters
half shot the lot, which is pretty good
shooting.
Next on the programme was the Shooters
World Handicap by Distance trophy match.
The club would like to thank Lindsay Duncan
from Shooters World for his continued
sponsorship to this club for this match.
Without sponsorship we wouldn’t be able to
put up such a good line-up of prizes.
Using the NZCTA Handicap by Distance
handicap has made this shoot a very
interesting shoot with possibles spread
right over the distances. We had 14
shooters line up for the shoot off. They shot
15 targets then re-squadded as there were
only 6 shoots left. Very soon it came down
to Joe Wilson from Southland and Hamish
Bell from Nightcaps to fight it out. They both
missed their 31st target so had to start again.
They went for another 21 targets before Joe
let his slip away and Hamish hit his to take
the win. Well done to both shooters.
It was very pleasing to see so many young
school shooters attend this shoot, and the
way they are shooting possibles hopefully
bodes well for the future of our sport.
I would like to thank all shooters who
attended this shoot, and hope you enjoyed
your day at Nightcaps. I would also like to
thank our members who helped inside and
out to make this shoot run very smoothly.

THE AMAZING CUCUMBER
This article was published in the New York Times as part
of their “Spotlight on the Home” series that highlighted
creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems.
1
Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every
day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2,
Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid. Vitamin C, calcium,
iron, magnesium, phosphorus, Potassium and zinc
2
Feeling tired in the afternoon? Put down the caffeinated
coffee and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source
of B vitamins and carbohydrates that can provide that quick pickme-up that can last for hours.
3
Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower?
Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate
the fog and provide a soothing spa-like fragrance.
4
Are grubs and slugs ruining you’re planting beds? Place a
few slices in a small tinfoil pie container and your garden will
be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber
react with the aluminium to give off a scent undetectable to
humans but drive garden pests to distraction and make them flee
the area.
5
Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite
before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two
of cucumber along the offending area for a few minutes. The
phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to
tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing cellulite visibility.
Works great on wrinkles too!!!
6
Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few
cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed
and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins
and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost,
keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and
headache!
7
Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking
binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries by
European trappers, traders and explorers for quick meals to thwart
off starvation.
11
Just finish at a business lunch and realise you don’t have
a breath freshener? Take a slice of cucumber and press
it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to
eliminate bad breath. The phytochemicals will kill the bacteria in
your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.
12
Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the
cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also
works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to
decorate the walls!
13
Looking for a green way to clean your faucets, sinks or
stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on
the surface you want to clean. Not only will you remove years of
tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won’t leave streaks and
won’t harm your fingers or fingernails while you clean.
Pass this along to everybody you know who is looking for better
and safer ways to solve life’s everyday problems
IN THE 1500’s
The next time you are washing your hands and
complain because the water temperature isn’t just
how you like it, think about how things used to be.
Here are some facts about the 1500s:
Most people got married in June because they took their
yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June.
However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a
bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom
today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of
the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the
other sons and men, then the women and finally the children.
Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could
actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don’t throw the
baby out with the bath water.
8
Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with
no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get
warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived
in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes
the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying .
It’s raining cats and dogs.
9
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the
house.. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs
and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence,
a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded
some protection. That’s how canopy beds came into existence.
You have made the shoot off, an important meeting or a job
interview and you realise you don’t have the wherewithal
or time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over
your shoes, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine
that not only looks great but also repels water.
Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a
cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and
voila, the squeak is gone!.
10
Stressed out and don’t have time for a massage, facial;
or visit to a spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place
it in a pot of boiling water, the chemicals and nutrients from the
cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in a
steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown
to reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final
exams.
The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other
than dirt. Hence the saying, Dirt poor. The wealthy had slate
floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they
spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the
winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened
the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was
placed in the entrance way. Hence the saying a thresh hold

Less recoil and reduced muzzle raise for improved accuracy.
Thanks to the new Kick-Off System the recoil energy is gradually

TEMPLETON MEMORIAL
Wanaka Gun Club
In a recent clay-target competition held
at the Wanaka Gun Club, Rex Smart of
Wanaka won the sought after Templeton
Memorial Trophy. With over 25 shooters
competing in the 4 x 25 “down the line”
target shoot, it came down to three local
members in the final shoot off.
The Wanaka Gun Club boasts 23
members with new young blood coming
through with the likes of Cameron Meikle
(14) who has done very well in national
events. Cameron shot 99 targets out of
100 on the day. The younger members are
enthusiastically supported and coached by
the experienced members

ISSF SERIES
Well the first 2 events of the 2010 Perazzi
ISSF Series have been completed and were
a huge success.
On Saturday there were 15 entries for
the 100 targets, with three new junior
shooters taking part.
With the weather forecast predicting
rain, it was very heartening that it remained
relatively dry with only a few passing
showers.
The early pace was set by Myles
Browne-Cole and Brant Woodward with
25’s, however it was Peter Goodwin who
showed the everyone how it was done with
a great 50 straight over the last 2 rounds
to end on a 97 ex 100. In close pursuit
were Myles Browne-Cole on 95 and Brant
Woodward on 93. Also making the final
was Owen Robinson on 90, Gavin Paton on
89 and Natalie Rooney on 88.
At the completion of the single
barrel final, Peter Goodwin was 1st with
97+22=119, Myles Browne-Cole 2nd with
95+18=113 and Gavin Paton 3rd with
89+22=111.
On Sunday there were also 15 entries
for the 100 targets, with four new people
competing, which was very encouraging
to see.
With a foggy background for the 1st
round, it was Gavin Paton with a 24 that set
the first round pace. After the first round,
the fog lifted to reveal a perfect sunny
winter’s day leaving no excuses for anyone.
At the conclusion of the 100 targets it was
Brant Woodward leading on 95, followed
by Owen (hangover) Robinson and Myles
Browne-Cole on 93. Rounding out the top
6 were Jack Norwood on 92, Gavin Paton
on 91 and Natalie Rooney on 87.
At the completion of the single barrel
final, Brant Woodward was 1st with
95+22=117, closely followed by Jack
Norwood on 92+23=115 and in 3rd place
Myles Browne-Cole with 93+20=113.
Come along and have some fun with
us and enjoy a great day’s shooting.
Remember it is not too late for anyone
interested in making the teams, to shoot
the three required matches, with four
events left to be shot and if you are not
interested in making a team you can still
come along and have some fun!
See you at the next event

letters to the editor
Dear Editor,
Some thoughts on some of the NZCTA Championships,
to be run over the next few months. I refer to the
NZCTA ISSF Zone matches to be held in the Oct-Dec
period.
When I first started participating in these events I
did not realise that each Zone match is a stand-alone
NZCTA event on equal footing with the Provincial
matches that are so popular with many of our shooting
fraternity. Indeed the prizes are the same – sash to
HOA, badge to 1st placed in each grade, certificates
to 2nd and 3rd. And of course sweeps divvied up in
the same way.
For those who have not shot Trap before, but have
shot Ball trap, a pretty good place to start might
be to consider each station 1-5 as being the same as
station 3 in Ball trap, and treat it accordingly.
Perhaps your preference is Skeet. Well here is another
variation on your favourite theme. Just shoot it gun
down and with a slightly different programme around
the stations. Yes the targets travel faster, so as
many of you have told me over the years –“just see
it and shoot it”.
Then for those of you who enjoy Double Rise or
Sporting pairs there is Double Trap. In comparison
the targets are much closer together. Make sure you
see the target come out of the hole because there is
a variable delay of up to 1 second.
For those who have not competed in these events
before there is C grade. Hence you can play without
having to compete with the purists who may have
other goals on their mind.
The Zone matches are held over a weekend with the
Trap and Skeet being shot at the same time, and the
Double Trap being shot on the Sunday afternoon. The
four matches this year, I believe, are being held
in Christchurch, Hutt Valley, Balfour and Waikato.
Entry fees are cheap as chips, making these NZCTA
events the best value for money on the calendar.
Bring your friends to your closest event –the more
the merrier and you never know you just might find
out you are better than you dreamed.
By the way, I see that both Christchurch and Hutt
Valley are running warm up Ball trap events prior to
their matches, so you might be able to win a free
entry into the bargain.
Cheers
Timothy Dixon

OBITUARY
EILEEN HEATHER
WHITTLE
4 November 1929
– 5 June 2010
After being forced
to dismiss a bloke
for dishonesty, the
Whangarei
and
Otamatea Gun Club
had to start again,
virtually
from
scratch. The late Syd Thomas, a fine
person and a very good shot, sacrificed
his own pleasure to take the Secretary’s
job and straighten out the books. Syd
operated a garage close to the Whittle
family and somehow got them involved
in the Club.
First Suzanne Whittle took on the job
of Secretary for approximately 12
months before handing the books over
to her mother, Eileen. This was indeed
the beginning of a new era for the
Whangarei and Otamatea Gun Club,
now called the Whangarei Combined.
The absolute honesty and integrity
of the Whittle family made a huge
contribution to the ongoing success of
the club. Eileen gave us over ten years
of faithful service and was made a Life
Member for her contribution. Many of
the older shooters will fondly remember
her smiling face and good sense of
humour. If a shooter came to the office
and got a bit stroppy and needed their
pedigree reassessing she could handle
that as well. Eileen’s late husband, Chas
also made a contribution to the club
and whenever we held an open shoot
he would run the bar for us.
The Whangarei Club now enjoys world
class facilities and is fortunate to be
debt free. Much of this success must
be credited to three gifted ladies who
have served the club extremely well
for nearly forty years. Eileen Whittle;
ten years plus, Aileen Hollister: also a
Life Member; ten years plus, and now
Toni Gee, nearing twenty years and still
putting up with us.
Our sincere sympathy to Eileen and
Chas’s family

Scott Shield And Southland Fish & Game
INTER COLLEGE SHOOT
Nightcaps Club grounds
The Nightcaps Clay Target Club once again hosted the Scott
Shield/Southland Fish & Game Inter College shoot on the 18th July.
Our grounds could not have got a more perfect winter’s day for 56
school shooters from Timaru south eager to hit some targets.
I would like to congratulate all shooters who shot possibles or
shot their personal best scores. There were certainly some good
scores showing up on the board with lots of red chalk, which is
always good to see. I would like to thank all Nightcaps’ members
and visiting members who took the time to set the targets, fill
the traps and refereed and marked all day, which kept the shoot
running smoothly and finished by 2.30pm. A big thank you must
also go the Central Southland College school shooters’ parents
for keeping us all fed. Without your support the school shooting
wouldn’t be as successful as it is.
Well done to Central Southland College No 1 team for winning
the Scott Shield. They shot 69 out of a possible 75, with John
McGlashan and Southland Boys’ High both coming in on 65 so
had to go and shoot another 5 targets each with John McGlashan
coming out the winner for 2nd place. Craighead No 1 won the
Ladies team event. The High Gun saw three senior shooters and
one junior shooter contesting the shoot off with Alexandra Brown
being the Junior shooter who came out the overall winner. Well
done Alexandra.
Thank you to all the parents and coaches who travelled with the
shooters for bringing them to Nightcaps. I hope you all enjoyed
your day with us and hope to see you all back again the same time
next year.

Lower North Island
Secondary School Circuit
Round 4 – 1st August, Hawke’s Bay Clay Target Club
Hilary Wroe Lady High Gun
Fifty seven shooters from seven schools
attended the 4th round of the Hunting &
Fishing Lower North Island College Circuit
shoot at the Hawke’s Bay Clay Target Club.
Again we were lucky to buck the weather
forecast which was for rain. However,
shooters did have to deal with subdued
light which tended to make the targets
harder to see and some blustery wind
which bumped them around quite a bit
at times. Although not as many possibles
were posted as at the previous shoots,
the average score for the day was higher
(81.5/100), suggesting an encouraging
continued general improvement despite
the sometimes tricky conditions.
Each individual and team is able to drop
two scores from the seven available circuit
shoots. With three shoots remaining, this
means that the competition is still wide
open!

Round 3 – June 27th, Patangata Clay Target Club
The 3rd round of the Central/ Lower North Island Secondary
School Circuit was hosted by Central Hawke’s Bay College at the
Patangata Clay Target Club. Sixty-eight shooters attended from
a range of Colleges from Wairarapa to Napier. The standard of
shooting seems to be steadily improving from an average score
of 73.9 in round 1, followed by 74.6 in round 2 and now 79.1
at Patangata. Shooting conditions were OK, overcast with an
intermittent breeze that rose a little towards the end of the day.
A big thank you to Mike McCormick and his team for the efficient
running of the shoot, to Central Hawke’s Bay College for hosting
the shoot and to the Circuit sponsor Hunting & Fishing New
Zealand.

CENTRAL/LOWER NORTH ISLAND
Secondary School Circuit
Round 2 – June 10th, Palmerston North Gun Club
High Guns – Tim Groves, Alannah Withers.
Single Barrel – Jim Aitkin 1st, Sam Tod 2nd, Sam Kirk 3rd
As with round
1, the weather
forecast was less
than optimistic, but
uncharacteristically
wrong – sounds like
a Tui ad! The conditions were overcast with a light westerly that
flattened out the odd target, but really not too bad. To allow each
event to be completed prior to the next beginning, the club chose
to shoot each 20 targets 10 x 10 over the 2 traps in the same style
that most club teams events are shot. This format seemed to catch
a few of the shooters out with the 2nd 10 targets tending to be a
challenge to some.
Nevertheless seven possible Single Rise 20/20’s were posted
by Tim Groves (Wairarapa), Alannah Withers (Karamu), John
Small (Napier), Ryan Gordon (Gisborne), Jamie Peryer-Fursdon
(Rathkeale), Taylor Howatson (Lindisfarne), Callum Beattie
(Palmerston North). After the shoot-off – 1st John Small, 2nd Tim
Groves, 3rd Alannah Withers.
No possibles were shot in the Points Score but Taylor Howatson
and Sam Kirk (both Lindisfarne) shot off for 1st and 2nd on
59/60, Sam Kirk the eventual winner. Tim Groves and Jim Aitkin
(Rathkeale) shot off for 3rd on 58/60, Tim ultimately prevailing.
Jim Aitkin shot the only possible 20/20 in the single barrel.
James Fulford, Jamie Peryer-Fursdon, Sam Tod (Lindisfarne) and
Sam Kirk shot off for 2nd & 3rd on 19/20. The Lindisfarne shooters
prevailing with Sam Tod 2nd and Sam Kirk 3rd.
The team competition was based on the points score event.
Unfortunately Lindisfarne was unable to field a full team due to
internal exams which may have been lucky for the other teams
based on the high scores produced by the Lindisfarne shooters
that were able to attend!
Results as follows:
Points Score - Tim Groves 3rd, Taylor Howatson 2nd, Sam Kirk 1st
1 Palmerston North Boys’ High School 260, 2 Napier Boys’ High
School 256, 3 Rathkeale College 254
Again, there was no need for a shoot-off for High Gun as Tim
Groves was alone on 96/100. Alannah Withers won Ladies High
Gun with 87/100. The top 10 individual placings for the day were
as follows:
1. Tim Groves (Wai Col) 96, 2 Jamie Peryer-Fursdon (Rath.) 95, 2
Sam Kirk (Lin.) 95, 4 Jim Aitkin (Rath.) 93, 4 Taylor Howatson (Lin.)
93, 6 John Small (NBHS) 92, 7 Callum Beattie(PNBHS) 91, 8 Adam
Fulford (Karamu) 90, 9 James Fulford (Karamu) 88, 9 Conway Mildon
(NBHS) 88, 9 Shaun Smyth (NBHS) 88, 9 Ryan Gordon (GBHS.) 88, 9
Sam Tod (Lin.) 88

The
previous
night’s storm had
moved on to wreak
some havoc in
Gisborne, leaving
Hastings
with
gusty winds and passing clouds providing challenging shooting
conditions. A strong field of 60 shooters turned out to contest
the inaugural round of the Hunting & Fishing New Zealand Lower
North Island Secondary School Circuit.
Seven possible 20/20’s were posted by Callum Beattie, Max
Buchanan of Palmerston North Boys High School, Conway Mildon
of Napier Boys High School, Todd McCormick, Sam Tod, Taylor
Howatson of Lindisfarne College and Tim Groves from Wairarapa
College. After the shoot-off – 1st Sam Tod, 2nd Conway Mildon,
3rd Todd McCormick.
The points score was shot purely as a teams event without
individual awards, but it is noteworthy that Jack Wakeling from
Wairarapa College shot the only possible 60/60 in very difficult
shooting conditions, followed by Brett Harpham PNBHS on 58/60
and then Callum Beattie PNBHS and James Fulford from Karamu
College on 56/60. In the teams event the Palmerston North Boys’
High School team of Cameron Shailer, James Abbiss, Matt Lynch,
Brett Harpham & Callum Beattie took the day with 273/ 300
followed by Napier Boys’ High School on 254/300.
With winds not looking like abating and light conditions
constantly changing, the Single Barrel event was always going to
be tough. There were no possibles, but despite the odd drooping
bottom lip there were four 19/20’s posted by James Abbiss, Matt
Lynch, Brett Harpham and Callum Beattie, all from Palmerston
North Boys’ High School. The results after a shoot-off were – 1st
James Abbiss, 2nd Callum Beattie, 3rd Brett Harpham.
There was no need for a shoot-off for High Gun as Brett
Harpham PNBHS was alone on 96/100. Alannah Withers won
Ladies High Gun with 88/100. Individual rankings for the circuit at
the completion of the first round are as follows:
1. Brett Harpham (PNBHS) 96, 2 Callum Beattie (PNBHS) 95, 3
Jack Wakeling (WaiCol) 90, 4 Jason Brown (Gisborne) 90, 5 Cameron
Shailer (PNBHS) 89, 5 John Small (NBHS) 89, 5 Tod McCormick (Lin.)
89, 5 Taylor Howatson (Lin.) 89
Team Rankings as follows:
1. Palmerston North Boys’ High School 273, 2 Napier Boys’ High
School 254, 3 Central Hawke’s Bay College 248

June 19th. 2010
Thanks again to the Thames Club for another great job
preparing the grounds and their facilities, as well as the volunteers
who helped refereeing and scoring for the day. Richard Boenders,
Mike Boakes, and Don McCarthy for their help target setting, trap
loading and cleaning up at the end of the day. Stephanie Ginnelly
for kindly helping Diane Boenders run the office and cashier the
shoot. Nola, for another nice lunch and refreshments. Thank you
to the competitors who travelled varying distances to participate.
The weather was kind to us again with some threatening looking
overcast but no rain and a workable amount of wind from behind
to keep you focused on dropping targets. Great improvement by
Cameron Ginnelly from his last Singles shoot. Remember this is all
single barrel.
The day was shot with three separate events starting with 100
singles, 100 handicap and 50 pair of doubles.

July 17th 2010
Another great job preparing the grounds and facilities by the
Thames Club, and thanks again to the volunteers who helped
referee and score for the day. We were short on helpers for the day
and Don McCarthy (as usual) almost handled the day trap loading,
setting, and clean up at the end of the day single handedly, with
some much appreciated help from Dave Muggeridge and Les
Clarke. Thanks again to Stephanie and Diane for running the office
and cashiering the shoot and Nola for another nice lunch and
refreshments. Thank you to the competitors who travelled varying
distances to participate. Our luck returned with the weather being
kind to us again, just a light shower in the second 25 targets for
the first handicap squad. And what a squad it was. Bryce Schou
ran the middle 50 from 20yards with great form to finish with a
98. Great shooting. The feat is even more of an achievement when
you consider the less than encouraging comments from the other
squad members. Les Clarke, who is renowned for his unique pre
shoot motivational talks to the schoolboy team he coaches, was
doing his best trying to put Bryce off. Apparently the squad had
chipped in $20 each with the top score taking the pot so there
was some extra motivation. One of the squad members was even
overheard after the last 25 targets commenting that he felt like
someone might have had sex with him during the round. You had
to be there, it was one of the most fun events I’ve had the pleasure
of scoring, not to mention watching the level of shooting.
The day was shot with three separate events starting with 100
singles, 100 handicap and 50 pair of doubles.
100 Singles A Grade Equal Tie 1st thru 3rd no shoot off Les
Clarke, Dave Muggeridge & Cameron Muggeridge all on 95. B

SCORE
Michael Sutherland proved his long battle (+ 220 targets )
in finishing second to big Jack Norwood in the NZ single rise
inter-collegiate at Hamilton last September was no fluke when
competing in the Dunedin inter-collegiate on July 4 against 83
other competitors.
Michael shot possibles in the Skeet (25/25), Single Rise (20/20)
and Single Barrel (15/15) and scored 58/60 in the Points Score. He
had to shoot off against Tom Willocks from John McGlashan in the
skeet to win the H.O.A. then had to shoot off against 7 others in the
Single Rise to once again win the H.O.A. title. He was the HOA in
the Single Barrel discipline by virtue of shooting the only possible.
There were no possibles in the Points Score event indicating that
conditions were less than ideal for good scoring, William Rooney
(Timaru Boys High) eventually winning the shoot off from 4 others
who finished on 59/60.
Michael finished the day as the High Gun and in the process
didn’t drop a target, (98/98) and finished with a combined points
total of 118/120, 6 points ahead of his nearest rival. He has two more
local inter-collegiate shoots, Nightcaps and Alexandra to hone his
skills prior to the South Island and Nationals at Christchurch in
September

NORTH ISLAND
Secondary
School CHAMPS
By P. Verran for Secondary School Committee
The 2010 North Island Secondary School Clay Target
Championships were held in Hamilton Saturday 3rd July.
There were 195 shooters representing 31 schools. With a full
programme of DTL and skeet events to be shot in the one day,
shooting was scheduled to begin at 8.00am but because of very
heavy fog and no wind to blow it away, the competition began
about 9.00am with the fog still heavy but okay for shooting. The
fog hung around till about lunch time when it lifted to lovely
sunny but cool conditions with no wind.
The DTL events were over by about 12.30pm and shoot offs for
individual points and single barrel got underway while the skeet
fields were being set up.
There were 7 possibles in the points but after the first 5 targets
only 3 remained, Liam Buchanan, Max Andrews and Scott Verran.
Another 15 targets were required to find an overall winner. In the
single barrel there were 21 possibles needing 20 targets to get a
result. The single rise shoot off was done after the conclusion of
the skeet event and the 25 on a possible of 20 needed 105 targets
to get a winner. The Fish and Game sponsored Trophy event was
run in conjunction with this.
There were 53 entries in the skeet with only 2 competitors on
25, Devon da Silva and Jamie Peryer-Fursden, this shoot off was
won by Jamie.
Thanks must go to Dean and his team for who kept the event
running smoothly throughout the day. The office staff for keeping
the score board up to date for all to see the results as they were
completed. Special thanks to Fish and Game for the generous
sponsorship of the trophy event and to Kilwell who supplied the
ammunition for the teams and single barrel event. Rudi Hoetjes
from NZ Fish and Game presented the winners with their trophies
and prizes, assisted by Keith Livingstone from NZCTA.
