Successfully Managing It All: Lora Doebler
by Megan Thornberg
During the spring musical production of “Willy Wonka,” there were many
late nights and long hours of rehearsal that every member of the play had to
attend. During the breaks between scenes when most people took the time
to relax, Lora Doebler and a group of her friends were found studying and
doing homework (along with talking and laughing and making the occasional
Sheetz run).
At the time I did not know exactly what rank Lora held in her class
because it was such a close competition in the top 3, but I knew that she
earned good grades and I saw that she was one of those people who had a
good work ethic and could manage different activities. To no surprise, I found
out that she had in fact maintained a high class rank—the top of the class.
Lora’s hard work and effort while balancing other activities earned her the
honorable title of valedictorian of the class of 2011.
Along with being involved in the play, Lora participates in several activities.
She has played volleyball all four years of high school. She also takes part in
Letters to Our Soldiers Club, is a member of the National Honor Society, and
is the historian of the senior class. She was also a member of the school
band during her freshman and junior years. Apart from school activities, Lora
is very involved in her church, the Halifax United Methodist Church.
Lora enjoys hanging out with her friends and playing volleyball. Being
able to balance all of these activities and still maintaining the rank of
valedictorian is a great achievement for Lora because she worked hard to do the best that she could in everything
that she is involved in. Lora’s hard work definitely paid off. Besides being valedictorian, she received honors such
as the Rachel Carson Book Award, Student of the Month, Student of the Week, and a scholarship for being at the
top of the class by the end of her junior year.
It seems that all of her achievements and good grades come naturally to her, but she says that they also
require a hard work ethic. While in school, Lora’s teachers and parents serve as her academic mentors and give
her guidance. One of Lora’s teachers, Mrs. Schultz, says that as a student, “Lora has a very good work ethic and
completes all of her work on time, is independent, and is a deep thinker who likes to try to work through problems
on her own before asking questions.” Because Lora has such a good work ethic, Mrs. Schultz expected Lora to
be at least in the top 3 of her class and feels that she is deserving of her title of valedictorian.
After high school, Lora plans to attend Lycoming College. There, she is going to study bio/premed. Once she
has finished her college education, Lora wants to become a physician assistant. When it came to deciding on a
major and what career to pursue, Lora had always known that she wanted to do something in the medical field, but
she had just recently decided on becoming a physician assistant. Her interest in the medical field makes sense
because it reflects her favorite subjects in high school: science
and math.
On top of being a great student, Lora has a great personality.
I don’t think there has ever been a time when I passed her in the
hall and she wasn’t smiling. When commenting on Lora’s
personality, Mrs. Schultz said, “She is quiet but honest,
hardworking, sincere, and good-natured.” Since I have gotten to
know Lora a little more from the spring musical, I agree that she
has all of those qualities, especially good-natured (and kind)—
she was even nice enough to lend me a pair of black pants when
I forgot mine for a scene in the play.
Lora is a well-rounded individual who puts a lot of effort into
not only her schoolwork, but also all of the activities that she is
involved in. I wish her the best of luck after graduation!

Josh Conway: Scholar
by Mahir Tiro
It’s soccer season of my sophomore year and many new soccer players
have signed up. Many of these new players that have signed up have
played soccer in the past, except for one. Josh Conway, after playing
football for basically his whole life, has decided to step onto the soccer
field. Many expected him to fail, but through hard work and determination
he flourished and became a leader for many people on the team.
Many of the traits that he showed on the soccer field have carried over
into his other sports and especially to his schoolwork. Josh’s unmistakable
character, great work ethic, and positive attitude are only a few reasons as
to why Josh is the class of 2011’s salutatorian.
Josh is constantly putting his best foot forward no matter what the
obstacle. Being in the top three of his class is already hard enough but he
is also involved in the Foreign Language Club, rugby, and football. All of
this, added to the fact that he has several AP courses may leave little time
for anything but school, but Josh often finds time to indulge in a good movie
or have a good time with his friends.
Although it wasn’t always something that he dreamed of attaining, Josh
is very happy about being in the top three of his class, saying that it is
“awesome” to be in this position. Although Josh isn’t involved in many
clubs he has left a lasting impact on many of the teachers and students at Halifax throughout his year in high
school. When asked about Josh, Mrs. Adrian, who has been his French teacher for the past four years, called him
an “exceptional student.” On that note, Josh’s favorite memory of high school was going to France during the
summer of 2010 with Mrs. Adrian.
Many different teachers have impacted Josh throughout his high school years, and some of his favorite teachers
have been Mrs. Schultz, Mrs. K. Enders (who also teaches his favorite class of AP Government), and Mr. Hoover.
Also, in his opinion, his greatest accomplishment in high school was winning “Mr. Wildcat” at 2010 relay day, and
he wants to be remembered by his graduating peers for “Dressing up at Halloween and what-not.” As for what he
will miss the most about high school, “not much else except for being able to see friends every day.”
All seniors, whether in Halifax, Millersburg, or any other school around the world face a certain amount of
uncertainty when taking their first steps out of high school and into college. Josh is no different, but it seems that
he is able to take the steps to college in stride.
His academic records were good enough to let Josh have his pick at whatever school he desired, but he knew
the school that was right for him. Josh’s hard work academically throughout his high school years has earned him
a scholarship to the prestigious University of Pittsburgh. His first choice for his major is psychology, but he
claims that he might switch it to something else as he is
not decided yet.
Looking down the road, more uncertainties come up,
but Josh knows for a fact that he wants to finish college,
and plans on having a beard. When asked about his life
plans after college up until his death, Josh said he won’t
die because “I am eternal.” I am not certain as to how
true that statement is, but the memory of Josh Conway
will be eternal throughout the hallways of Halifax High
School for many years to come. Wherever life will take
Josh, the class of 2012 and I wish you the best of luck in
all of your future endeavors.

Drew Osenbach: Athlete, Actor, Scholar
By: Anthony Patrick
Drew Osenbach is full of good character and
qualities. He is responsible, intelligent, and athletic.
He is a great student and an even greater friend. Being
a senior this year, Drew shows his leadership in
everything that he does. He is a leader in all the sports
that he is involved in, his classes at school, and is
even a role model outside of school. These last three
years, I was able to play soccer with Drew, and that is
where I saw his leadership skills. When he broke his
hand his junior year, he was still the biggest leader on
the team, yelling out to us on the field and letting us
know our surroundings. Drew was just like another
coach on the sideline. In school, he shows his
leadership by being a part of many different clubs and
by helping other students with their schoolwork.
Sports are a big part of Drew’s life and although Drew was born with club feet, he is still a very well
rounded athlete. He did face some hardships though, because Drew was not a normal kid. He could not do
anything like a normal toddler could and wears braces for his ankles whenever he plays sports. Drew is
involved in soccer during the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball in the spring. Drew was able to receive
a captain position on the soccer team for his junior year and he kept that well deserved position for his senior
year. Along with that captain position for the soccer team, he received a captain position in baseball and
basketball for his senior year. Due to his hard work, Drew is both a Scholar and an All Star this year. Although
he is a big part in all of these sports, Drew is still able to do well in school.
Drew does very well in his
classes at school and is
among the top three in his
grade. He is involved in FCA,
Varsity Club, NHS, Language
Club, Drama Club, and the
Conservation Club. Drew also
performed a role in the Halifax
Spring Play, “Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory” and was
involved in the Halifax Talent
Show. Drew plans to attend
Marshall University to major
in their business or sports
management program. Drew
is a very well-rounded young
man and I am sure that he
will lead a very successful
life.

Lauren Steffen: A Legacy in the Making
by Heather Laudenslager
The dictionary definition of an athlete is “a person trained or gifted in
exercise or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength.” My
personal definition of an athlete would be someone who participates in
physical activity, and has a pure love for the game. When taking these
definitions into consideration, all fingers pointed at one person who is a
true athlete, Lauren Steffen. Although the Steffen name is well known in
Halifax, especially for athletic achievement, Lauren’s personal legacy
has shined nonetheless.
Lauren’s name has been featured on the news, on the school billboard,
and in the newspaper many times during her high school career. Lauren
is well known not because of her ability in one sport, but for her ability in
four. She has played and excelled in soccer, basketball, and track for all
four years of high school. Not only can Lauren compete with the girls at
soccer and basketball, but she also played football with the guys during
her freshman year.
Lauren will be graduating this year with 11 Varsity letters, and 2
Junior Varsity letters under her belt. She says that sports have always
been a huge part of her life. Her sister, Elizabeth, said that they have
pretty much always been the other’s biggest supporter. She said it is
always a challenge to split apart during spring season, as Elizabeth plays softball and Lauren runs track, “Next
year will be the toughest challenge as we go our separate ways and I will not be stepping out on the soccer field
with her and taking orders from her from the midfield. I know she will succeed and do great things as a Golden
Bear soccer player.”
Lauren is a mid-fielder in soccer, guard and forward in basketball, and runs long distance in track. She was a
basketball captain during her senior year, and a track captain both her junior and her senior year. In soccer, she
was 1st team all state, and holds every single district record. These include most assists, scoring, and overall
points. She broke the overall points record for a single season as well. In track, she was the district runner up in
the 4 x 8. As you can tell, Lauren sure is leaving her mark on Halifax. Soon after graduation, she will be traveling
to Kutztown to major in bio pre-med and plans to further her soccer career there.
Tricia Shultz, Lauren’s basketball coach, talked very highly of her. She said during sports Lauren is very
competitive and serious, but is also a very serious student that focuses and always puts in her absolute best
effort. Lauren is also very friendly and extremely social. I’ve come to know Lauren in the last few years, and I would
completely agree with these statements. Lauren is always very nice to people, very caring, and very good in
school. Coach Shultz also said that Lauren is a motivator and “demands of others only what she demands of
herself.” Throughout the entire interview with Coach Shultz, she kept stressing to me how “intense” Lauren is, so
it’s no surprise that she believes Lauren will succeed in the collegiate level. Mrs. Shultz said that Lauren is going
to do exceptional at the collegiate level because in college, everyone
on her team will have the same intensity and love for the game as she
does. Her new team members will all be on the same level as her, and
will definitely give her some competition.
Lauren will leave something at Halifax that will not easily be
forgotten. Just because the sound of her laugh, and the memory of
her infamous yoga pants may start to fade doesn’t mean she will be
forgotten in the minds of teammates and friends. Her picture is featured
on the Sports Wall of Fame by the high school gym, and along with
that picture will be left the legacy of Lauren. Good luck in all you do
Lauren, we will miss you.

Making Herself Known: Elizabeth Steffen
by Cassandra Erdman
High school can be a challenging time for most of us and
to play three sports on top of that can be even more difficult, but
not for Elizabeth Steffen. We all know Elizabeth as a well-rounded
student and leader of her graduating class of 2011. As well as
being a leader in school, Elizabeth was a “quiet leader” in sports,
says Coach Tracey Cox. Whether it is on a field or a court, she
was always ready to play and ready to win. At the end of this
spring season Elizabeth, will have finished her 12th sport season
in her high school career. She has played soccer, basketball and
softball all four years. Out of the three, her favorite sport would
have to be soccer because she loves the sport all around and
knows her abilities can make her go far.
Elizabeth started playing sports at age five with her twin
sister, Lauren. Her favorite memory was when she and all her friends
played on the Halifax cobra’s soccer team together. Her selfmotivation and her parent’s motivation pushed her to be the best
that she can be, and to where she is today. Elizabeth has earned
a total of ten varsity letters and two junior varsity letters. She was awarded MVP for the girl’s soccer team in
2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. In her senior year, Elizabeth was a captain for the girls soccer team and was “a
leader, particularly on defense” says girl’s soccer coach, Jan Hoffner.
In basketball, Elizabeth was named to her league’s 2nd team in 2009 and was an honorable mentioned
in 2010. In 2009 Elizabeth was also named 1st team for the Tri-Valley and Schuylkill Leagues for softball. Out
of all her years, her greatest accomplishment was when the girl’s soccer team won the Schuylkill League and
the Division during her sophomore year.
Not only is Elizabeth loved by her teammates, fans and media,
but also by her coaches. When asked how she would
characterize Elizabeth as an athlete and person, softball coach
Tracey Cox said “she is very responsible, caring, and always
willing to play anywhere she is needed on the field.” Girls soccer
coach, Jan Hoffner refers to Elizabeth as “very unselfish and
team oriented.”
Even when the school year is over, Elizabeth works to
make herself the best she can be by playing on summer league
teams. For two years Elizabeth played with the Krunch Softball
team and now plays for the NU United soccer team. She enjoys
traveling with the girls and playing the sports she loves.
Because of her hard work and skills, Elizabeth was
offered scholarships for soccer. After high school she plans to
attend the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown to join the lady
cat’s soccer team while studying occupational therapy. Good
luck Elizabeth!

Kelsie Bainbridge: The InjuryProne
by Megan Keefer
Kelsie Bainbridge has been involved with sports since she was five
years old. During her high school career, she’s played soccer, basketball,
and softball. Her hard work and dedication have earned her a total of nine
varsity letters throughout her high school career. She also earned 2nd team
All-State for Tri-Valley League Softball and 2nd team as Schuylkill League
goal keeper.
Kelsie has had a variety of roles in the sports that she has played. She
was the goalie for her soccer team, the pitcher for softball, and she also
played all positions in basketball. Among these sports, softball is her favorite.
She loves the game and has lots of fun playing it. Her most memorable
moment playing sports is having a no hitter during a district softball game.
Throughout soccer, she’s always had the jersey number 17. She said that
she’s kept that number because she’s always had it growing up.
Unfortunately, Kelsie has suffered a number of injuries during her high
school career. Her injuries have consisted of a broken ankle, reinjuring it
again, a hyper extended knee, and a few sprains in her ankle. Her worst
injury was during a soccer game when a girl slid into Kelsie while she was
saving a ball. While her ankle was healing she struggled a lot and would roll
it over and over again. Her sister, Krista Bainbridge, was the back-up goal
keeper. She took the healing process one step at a time and made sure
that she really rested, so she could continue playing sports.
Her basketball coach, Tricia Schultz, said that even though she was
injured most of the time, she really contributed to the team by encouraging
them and attending games and practices. She was also known as the
“assistant bench coach” and kept the team’s statistics. She often entertained
the team as well with her jokes. Coach Shultz said that she would miss
Kelsie’s great sense of humor and positive attitude the most.
O u r
high school athletic director, Gay Boyer, said that Kelsie was “one of the
more colorful athletes”. She added, “You never know what to expect with
Kelsie and she is always having a great time.”
Kelsie’s longtime friend and teammate, Mackenzi Bingaman, has played
soccer with Kelsie since Cobras. They have played indoor, travel, and high
school soccer together. Mackenzi is impressed by how tenacious Kelsie
can be. She remembers a time in their soccer travel team careers when
their team went into double overtime, and Kelsie wasn’t able to use her
hands as a goal keeper. It was very challenging, but Kelsie hung in there,
and they ended up winning their game.
Kelsie plans to continue playing softball during her collegiate years at
East Stroudsburg University. ESU is in for some good times with Kelsie on
the bench and in the field. Her teammates can count on her, healthy or
injured, to be there for them.

Danell Engle: Three Sport Student Athlete
by Marissa Mundy
Danell Engle isn’t just your
average high school student; she’s
a three sport athlete. While juggling
her schoolwork, going to play
practice and keeping a 95% average
to remain in the National Honor
Society, Danell still finds time to
participate in high school athletics.
Ever since kindergarten, she has had
a love for sports. Throughout her high
school years, she continues to
partake in soccer, wrestling and
track/field. Danell’s competitiveness,
willingness to step up to a challenge
and natural physical toughness have
made her what she is today.
When asked what her favorite
sport was out of the three, she
hesitated to reply. But within a few
seconds she confidently responded
by saying, “Track and field.” She
says, “Track is a team sport, yet at
the same time, it’s individual. I prefer
track because I’m always trying to
set a personal record for myself.”
Danell’s hard work and
determination have earned her much
recognition. She has received eight
varsity letters, is recognized by both
the Tri-Valley and Schuylkill Soccer
Leagues and she was just recently
pictured on the front page of the
sports section in the Sentinel.
Danell has also earned
acknowledgment as one of two girl
wrestlers on the Varsity team. “I’ve
been wrestling since kindergarten
and I’ve always been pretty good at
it. But it has gotten tougher because
the guys are stronger than they used
to be,” says Danell.
Wrestling demands a lot from
Danell; she has to make weight in
order to wrestle and battling stress
and sickness doesn’t make it easy
either. Yet in the end, she never lets
anyone down, giving it her all and
staying strong. “She truly is a role
model. After she won her first match,
five more girls signed up to wrestle.
The courage she shows when she
goes out onto that mat every time
she wrestles proves that no matter
what, she does what she loves” said
Mrs. Boyer.
Danell’s ability to stay strong and
succeed comes from the
encouragement she receives from
her friends and family. She says that
her parents have always supported
her decisions and that they have
never told her she that couldn’t do
what she wanted. Even if they knew
that their little girl would get bumps
and bruises from being knocked
around, they always agreed with
what she chose to do. You’re sure
to see her parents at all of her
sporting events to show their support.
Next fall, Danell will be attending
Bloomsburg University where she
will major in nursing. She hopes to
continue athletics by participating on
a club or intramural soccer team in
college. Danell will certainly be
remembered at Halifax High School
for her hard work and determination
as both an excellent student and
three sport athlete. Whatever you
may do in life, you will succeed,
Danell, I wish you the best of luck.

Hunter Rowe: Baseball Stud
by Nick Bednar
It all started at a young age for
athlete Hunter Rowe. He started
out by playing tee-ball when he was
five years old and has been playing
sports ever since. Over the years,
he has also played football,
basketball, baseball, and soccer.
Over his high school career, he has
played football, basketball, and
baseball. Hunter has a total of eight
varsity letters, with three in
football, three in baseball, and two
in basketball. Not too shabby, huh?
Hunter’s favorite sport is
basketball, but according to him,
the sport he is best at is baseball.
This could be because of his allstar recognition in the sport. He has
also received the honor of being
named to the All-Sentinel team for
basketball. Hunter will be going to
college at Penn State Harrisburg
and plans to continue his sports
career by playing on their baseball
team.
Everyone has someone who
influences them to go above and
beyond. For Hunter, this influence
is his dad. His dad holds the assist
record here at Halifax in basketball,
and Hunter pushed himself to live
up to his dad’s greatness. His dad
was also with him every step of the
way, mainly by coaching on his
teams in nearly every sport. His dad
may be what inspires him to
greatness, but his mom is his
biggest fan. She is there at every
game supporting him and cheering
him on.
As a three sport athlete, there
are many great moments Hunter
has experienced throughout his
career. His greatest moment came
this year against Millersburg in
basketball when he hit two goahead free-throws with only
seconds left on the clock to win the
game.
This helps prove what teammate
Chris Scheib said about him.
According to Chris, Hunter is
relentless, dedicated, and
determined, thus allowing him to
perform in clutch moments.
The competitive spirit of
moments like these is what Hunter
enjoys the most about playing
sports, along with the fact that he
gets to spend time with friends.
As Hunter moves on and
graduates, let’s take this moment
to wish him the best of luck in the
future. Who knows? We may see
him on the baseball diamond on TV
in years to come.

Mackenzi Moves on to the Next Level
by Nicole Kelley
As the end of the year approaches and graduation is right around the
corner, many senior athletes are hit with the fact that they will no longer
play a sport. However, some of these athletes have been given the
opportunity to further their athletic careers at a higher level. One of these
athletes you may recognize from the squeaking of her knee brace, Mackenzi
Bingaman.
Attending West Chester University this coming fall, Mackenzi will also
be seen playing on the school’s girls Soccer team. Interested in the
university, Mackenzi filled out recruiting papers in the hope that something
good would come from it and, sure enough, the coach from West Chester
later contacted her.
Mackenzi says she is a little nervous about playing in college; however,
after attending tryouts in mid April, she feels a bit more relaxed after playing
with the team. For Mackenzi, the love of soccer has always been with her,
and because of this soccer is without a doubt her favorite sport.
Mackenzi’s high school career has been very successful, although at
some points it has been difficult. During her junior year, Mackenzi received
an injury to her knee causing her to go through some tough times physically.
For Mackenzi, her injury has made her stronger not only as a person, but
also as an athlete. Mrs. Boyer, the Athletic Director at Halifax, added that
Mackenzi’s injury caused her to focus on new and different things, which in the long road bettered her overall
athleticism.
On the Soccer field, Mackenzi’s agility and quickness have propelled her to the top. From the beginning of her
career up to present, Mackenzi has received numerous awards. In 2007, 2008, and 2009 she received First Team
for both the Tri-Valley League and also the Schuylkill League. During her sophomore year, Mackenzi was named
team MVP for the girl’s soccer team. She is a Scholar athlete in both the Tri-Valley and Schuylkill Leagues.
During the 2009-2010 season, Mackenzi became the Tri-Valley League MVP and was awarded All-State First
Team as a Midfielder. Along with Mackenzi, her team has also thrived these past couple years winning numerous
titles.
Mackenzi posses many qualities that have helped her excel in her sports career. She is a hard worker and is
determined to excel. Her love of the game and her dedication to it are probably most important, though. She
pushes herself to excel and do better and with these
qualities and due to this Mackenzi is sure to excel in
her college sports career. Mackenzi’s coaches say that
on the field she is a spitfire and never gives up, but
most of all she is versatile which is attractive to many
coaches.
Mackenzi says her family is what influenced her
sports career the most. She said that her father and
grandparents never missed a game and she appreciates
that they have always been there for her.
In the future, Mackenzi hopes that she may one day
be able to become a soccer coach as a hobby. She is
excited to begin her college athletic career, and says
that anybody wanting to play a sport in college should
take care of their body.
We wish Mackenzi the best of luck in her career at
West Chester and congratulate her on her career here
at Halifax.

Amy J.
by AJ Krakowski
Amy Jacobs is known as “a friend and inspiration to those that know
her”. Being her neighbor for almost 16 years, I can firmly state that Amy
is a very well rounded person, both academically and athletically. She
takes higher level courses in school like Calculus and Physics, is the
vice president of Student Council, and also plays multiple sports
throughout the school year, with basketball being her favorite. She is
not shy by any means, and her outgoing friendliness shows both on and
off the field.
Amy was introduced to sports as a very young child by her family,
which has a history of outstanding athletes. Her older brother, Adam,
was also an outstanding basketball player, and he encouraged her to
play the sport when they were younger. Fitness is clearly a theme in the
family, with her mother being the director of the local YMCA and her
older brother excelling at basketball himself. One might say that it’s
even in her blood to take part in athletics. Sports have been in Amy’s life
since she was a young child, and the theme has been present ever
since. Amy says that most of her inspiration comes from the females in
her family, mainly her mother and her nana. She says “I always try to be
working harder to achieve my best for the task at hand”, which she
prides herself on.
When asked about Amy, a teacher / coach responded with: “Amy is
a very good team player and she is sort of like a big sister or a protector
to the younger kids. She likes to make people feel comfortable.” Amy
thinks that one of the things that sets her apart the most is her drive to
do the best and help others as much as she can. When asked why, she
responded by saying that she just likes helping people, and she takes
the opportunity to do that in whatever sport she is playing. She strives
to be a friend and inspiration to her teammates and a protector to the
newer players.
Amy has no aspirations to play a sport in college, and wishes to
focus more on furthering her education instead. She one day hopes to
attend graduate school and afterwards obtain a steady career. While
her future in sports may be coming to an end, many can agree that she
has had a fantastic run. Hopefully her reputation will precede her in
college and she will achieve as much in the rest of her life as she has in
high school and I personally wish her the best of luck wherever her
travels may take her.

“Supersonic Smith”
By Chris Scheib
On any given day in the halls of Halifax High, an
individual is more than likely to come across the young
man Shane Smith. However, the probability of actually
running in to him is slim to none, because A) The
individual came across one of Shane’s incredible,
lifelike self-portraits, or B) Saw a brief glimpse of
him since he moves at lightening fast speeds with
his running abilities.
When it comes to the school scene, Shane is
solid in his academics. Throughout his high school
career, he has striven for excellence by taking a
plethora of honors and AP courses. His favorite
courses deal with the graphic arts, his desired major
after graduating high school. “I guess my love for
drawing started throughout elementary/middle
school”, Shane says. “My greatest inspirations for
my work were my teachers, Mrs. Doherty and Mr. Crum, and my parents, who encouraged me to follow my
desires.”
Shane will be entering the military upon graduation, where he will be exposed to key work experience in
the field he wishes to major in. “Penn State has a top-notch Graphic Design course, where as a senior I’ll be
required to do an internship. More often than not, these internships lead to permanent jobs” Shane proclaims.
Aside from his passion for art, Shane has an equal love for running. A decorated distance runner, he has
made his mark on the 3 different races he competes in, but more importantly on the lives of his fellow “Long
Distance Crew” members. When asked about Shane, Coach Jill Steffen sums him up perfectly. “Only a few
times can a coach get lucky to have an athlete like Shane Smith. His work ethic on the track is to be
commended, while he lifts/encourages his teammates to work hard. He truly is one of the strongest runners
I’ve ever coached. When he runs, it’s like the
world stands still to watch.”
“Shane has proven to be a great role model
in every aspect of his high school career.” How
is that for certain? Because indeed, that is
my own quote. He has been one of my own
inspirations both academically and athletically
since the very first time we met. I can say it is
truly a blessing to have him as a peer, a cousin,
a teammate, and a friend. Keep on running

All Stars
Gab of All Trades
by Tatum Enders
When most hear the name
Gabrielle Reed, many qualities
come to mind: kind, athletic, smart,
artistic, outgoing, loud and fun are
just a few. But there is much more
to her than everyone might know.
Throughout her senior year,
Gabrielle has obtained 3 Varsity
letters alone. However, during the
course of her high school career,
she earned a total of eight Varsity
letters and one Junior Varsity letter.
She has participated in volleyball
and track during all 4 of her high
school
years
and
tried
cheerleading during her senior year.
I have had the personal experience
of cheering with Gab, and she was a quick learner and a good asset to the squad. In track she throws discus
and shot-put. However, her favorite sport that she plays is volleyball. She plays as a setter and enjoys the
competitiveness of the game.
“She was really good at motivating the team, she was always pumped and ready to go. Having someone
like that on the court really benefited us because there were a lot of quiet girls on the team and having
someone like Gabby really helped everyone open up and motivate themselves.” Quite a ringing endorsement
by volleyball teammate Jess Howard.
Although Gab has enjoyed her athletic areer at Halifax, she is not sure whether or not she would like to
continue her athletic career at the collegiate level.
Another activity that Gab is very passionate about is art. Her favorite genre is drawing. She enjoys the
feeling of accomplishment she gets when she finishes a work. Mr. Crum praised her as reliable, mature, and
helpful. He views her as a role model for the younger students with her work ethi, praising the way she takes
an idea and runs with it until the end. She has a lot of
passion for all of her projects and takes it hard when
something goes wrong.
Gab is also involved in the Girl Scouts and has
received her Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. For her
Gold Award she needed to have 60 hours of a
community service project. She organized and planned
a youth volleyball clinic.
After graduation Gabrielle plans to attend
Pennsylvania State University in Altoona for a major in
architecture and a minor in art. In 10 years she expects
to own her own architecture firm. When asked to sum
up her senior year in a few words she replied, “I’m sad
it’s coming to an end, but happy I’m starting a new
chapter in my life.”

Ben and Courtney make Beautiful Music
by Amanda Webster
Ben Feidt and Courtney Trotman have been voted as this year’s Most Musical
seniors. The children of Annette and Rodney Feidt and Andrew and Paula Trotman,
respectively, each of these remarkable musicians has been exposed to music
their whole life. Ben’s mother started teaching him how to play the guitar when he
was younger, but as he grew older, he began to teach himself. Courtney, on the
other hand, had taken piano lessons from elementary school to the time she was
in middle school. The amount of training that Ben and Courtney have received,
along with years of practice have definitely paid off for these two in the long run.
Ben’s inspiration to be a musician came the day he first heard the song “Fade
to Black” by Metallica. After hearing that song, he knew he had to be a guitarist.
His dream came true. Ben has been playing the guitar for about 5 years now and
is also involved in a band called Imperfect Harmony for about 3 months; however,
he has performed a good number of times outside of the band room doors. Since
he began his musical journey, Ben performed in TV Nite for three years, the
Courtyard Concert, and also plans on performing at Halifax’s Community Day.
Unlike Ben, Courtney prefers a bigger variety when it comes to music. She
took a dance class for 5 years and participated in concert band and chorus since
4th grade. Courtney also performed in the talent show, 8th grade recognition night,
the Twin Valley Players Roadshow, along with numerous Twin Valley Players and Halifax High School musicals.
Courtney performs at her church, too.
This girl isn’t just all about the music though. Courtney is also involved in many other clubs and activities, as well as
Ben. Courtney is an editor for Coral, is in the National Honor Society, and speaks out in the Principal’s Advisory Club.
Ben is an editor for the Hi-Lite, is in the Art Club, and is also a National Honor Society member. These two seniors
may have been voted Most Musical in their class, but the fact is that they are both well-rounded and very talented
individuals.
After interviewing Ms. Aunkst about her students, she emphasized that Ben practices constantly and he is a leader
and very patient with everyone. She described Courtney as “...quiet, very talented, and hides her talent well. People
don’t know how talented she really is.” Ms. Aunkst is also amazed at the fact that Ben can be so shy sometimes, then
turn around and rock out on the guitar to the point that others around him idolize his talent. Labeling Courtney as the
ideal student, Ms. Aunkst also thinks it’s cool that music is such a strong hobby for both students who have different
career interests.
Mrs. Shultz also put Ben and Courtney on the same pedestal, saying that both of her students are “deserving of any
kind of award.” Although not everyone in the school may be aware of either of their musical sides, most faculty and
students know how each of them succeeds in the classroom. Mrs. Shultz says that Ben is a deep thinker who
challenges himself, but is also very independent. She said that although Courtney is seen more with her small group,
she is also independent and always has her work done on time
and in complete detail.
After he graduates, Ben plans to attend Penn State Main
Campus to major in International Relations in addition to learning
Chinese and/or Russian. Courtney plans to attend Harrisburg Area
Community College and later transfer colleges, but she is currently
undecided what she wants to major in. In 10 years, Ben sees
himself living in a city apartment, working for the government, and
finishing another one of his many novels. Courtney pictures herself
living happily in the country somewhere and doing a lot traveling in
the future.
No matter where their lives lead them, though, both Ben and
Courtney plan to keep music as a strong hobby and are absolutely
deserving of the 2011 Most Musical title.

Aevidum: I’ve got your back!
by Christine Emerick
Aevidum was created in 2003 by a student at Cocalico High School to bring awareness about teen
depression and suicide. It’s a program that lets people know that depression is an illness, one that needs to
be treated and not just brushed aside.
The word ‘Aevidum’ was created from the Latin root “vid” meaning “life.” It is said as an expression of
reassurance to another person and can be used in place of “I’ve got your back.” Aevidum was formally known
as A Helping Hand (AHH) and is dedicated to saving the lives of students across the nation as suicide is the
third leading cause of death among young people.
The Aevidum assembly that was held on Friday April 8th spread the message throughout our school.
Posters containing the slogan “I’ve got your back” and warning signs of depression were hung up in the
hallways. Some warning signs of depression are weight loss/gain, headaches, unexplained crying,
hopelessness, problems with memory, fatigue, insomnia/hypersomnia, worry/anxiety, being self-critical, and
thoughts of death.
The next day, the Aevidum walk at the Rails to Trails in Elizabethville raised over $200. Heather Crook, the
organizer of Aevidum and Stand Tall, was surprised that we were able to raise that much money on the first
walk. She hopes to spread the message to other schools and that it will never be forgotten. She also hopes
to open an after-school club next year so that planning will be easier for the future events that she has in
mind.
Alyssa Najdek, a sophomore, said that the assembly “opened her eyes to the different signs of depression
because without that, you wouldn’t be able to tell if your best friend that you walk with every day could be
depressed or not.” She liked how it brought awareness not to just teens, but to adults as well. Alyssa also
said, “I learned that you are never alone and that there are different support groups out there to help you if
you need it.”
Eden Vega, a freshman, liked that Aevidum made it easier to get help and that there were people who do
care in the program. She liked that the message put out is that people have your back, no matter what. Eden
also said, “I have learned that there are many signs of depression and they’re not always seen.”
Through the Aevidum message, you can learn that you’re never alone in this fight and that you only have
to reach out to receive help. If you have any more questions you can go to www.aevidum.com or to Heather
Crook here in the high school.

You Can’t Rain on our Parade: Relay Day 2011
by Austin Laudenslager
After being rained out on Friday, May 20, the 5th annual Halifax High School Relay Day was held Monday,
May 23rd. Relay Day was organized by Student Council and FCCLA and is like the High School’s field day.
In order to participate in Relay Day, students had to donate or raise at least ten dollars. This money is then
donated to the American Cancer Society, and this year we have raised over $4,500 with fundraising continuing
until the Underclassmen Awards ceremony. At the current level, we earned the chance to pie Ms. Kelly and to
shave Mr. Hatfield’s legs at the closing ceremonies of Relay Day. If $6,000 is raised by Underclassmen Awards,
we will get to see both a musical performance by Mr. Shade, Mr. Ansel, and Mr. McIntosh and the snipping off of
Mr. Ruff’s beloved ponytail. These are treats worth an additional contribution to a worthy cause!
Notable events of Relay Day included the Survivor’s Lap, Mr. Wildcat contest, eating contests, and the dance.
Josh Conway won the Mr. Wildcat contest by beating out Drew Osenbach, Garrett Rowe, and Frank Mekeal in a
fashion contest, question session, and talent contest, as well as securing the most votes from students. The
eating contests ranged from eating pies to pickles and everything in between. AJ Krakowski particularly enjoyed
the cat food eating contest. There were also other, smaller events running throughout the day to keep people busy
and entertained.
Even though it didn’t happen when planned, Relay Day was a huge success. there was a lot of fun had and
a lot of money raised for the fight against cancer. Hopefully, we can raise even more money and throw an even
better Relay Day next year.

Lady Cat Softball Comes Up Short
By Nicole Kelley
Coming off of a great season last year,
the Lady Cat Softball team had high
expectations going into the 2011 season.
Losing only two seniors from the year before,
the team seemed pretty solid, and Coach Cox
believed that the team would have no problem
competing for the league title. Leading the team
this year were seniors Jess Erdman, Kelsie
Bainbridge, Elizabeth Steffen, and Hunter
Sponsler who also believed that the Cats would
have a successful year. The Lady Cats began
with a bad start this year because they couldn’t
get out onto the field due to bad weather. But
this was only the start of the team’s bad luck.
As the first scrimmage got underway,
trouble struck the Lady Cats in the last inning
when shortstop Amber Coppula was injured on
a throw down to second base. The team was
forced to change everything they had worked
on including positions and the team’s lineup.
Although things seemed like they couldn’t get
any worse with the loss of Amber and the first
couple games, more injuries were on their way.
The Lady Cats just couldn’t catch a break when
first baseman Nicole Kelley and catcher Jess
Erdman were injured during the middle of the
season. Once more, the softball team was
forced to rearrange everything they had worked
hard to fix.
Although things seemed bad for the
Lady Cats, they progressed greatly, and at the end of the season won their last three games. The
team’s hitting finally came around, and Kelsie Bainbridge’s pitching helped the Lady Cats finish their
season out strong. However, this last minute progress didn’t help, and the team did not go to districts,
ending their season with a record of 6 wins and 10 losses. It was a tough break for the team, especially
the seniors.
Even though the team did not have a winning record or go to districts this year, Coach Cox saw
much improvement as the year went on. Many of the players had to step up to the plate and play
positions they were not used to playing. Coach Cox also said that the team showed great character as
they finished the season out strong and never gave up. We wish the best of luck to the Lady Cats in the
seasons to come.

Track Team was “Unstoppable” this Year
By Alx Singer
The track season started off wet and heated as the first meet
against rival Greenwood was postponed. The girls ended their season
with a 4-0-2, which won them the Tri-Valley League title. The boys
ended their season with a 4-2-0. Even though the season consisted
of only six meets, there was plenty of practicing to be done to ready
the team for the Pine Grove Invitational, League meets, Districts,
and even States. The track team had plenty of depth with well over
twenty athletes sent to Districts this year. The 4x8 Relay Team placed
seventh in states. Overall, the track team had a good season and
should be proud of its accomplishments.

Halifax Baseball Strikes Back
by Kristen Manchor
Halifax Boy’s Baseball team was back in action this year. After an
upsetting season last year, they ended this year with an overall record
of 12 and 6 and a league record of 10 and 2. The team consisted of a
talented group of young men, three of which were named Twin Valley
League All Stars. They were Hunter Rowe, Cody Henry, and Matt
Osenbach. CJ Houtz, Kableb Reitz, and Garrett Rowe received honorable
mentions from the Twin Valley League.
The boys played hard all season and made it to districts where they
played Brandywine Heights. They continued to play with heart through
eight innings but lost to Brandywine with a heartbreaking score of 5-4
in the first round of districts.
Coach Ansel summarized the season as follows: “It was a very
successful 2011 baseball season as Halifax tied for first place in the
Tri-Valley League. The only league championship trophy in the trophy
case is from 1941, so it’s been long overdue. The players worked hard,
and that hard work has paid off.”

The Sweetest Musical Yet
By Jeremy Wheeler
This past April, the Halifax High School Drama
Club performed its annual spring musical to the
community. The Drama Club presented a very
entertaining stage show based on Roald Dahl’s very
well-known book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The cast was comprised of many elementary and
middle school aged children, in addition to the high
school cast. Many of the lead roles, in fact, were
performed by the children of our school district.
Charlie Bucket (who, in case you didn’t know, is the
main character) was acted by Caden Funk, the son
of our own Mr. Funk. The other lead roles were acted
by Austin Tummelson as Grandpa Joe, Chris
Maichle as Augustus Gloop, Haley Hoffman as Mrs.
Gloop, Trinity Bitting-Ellis (the daughter of Ms. Ellis,
as Violet Buearegard, Courtney Wilbert as Mrs.
Buearegard, Olivia Hoover as Veruca Salt, Matthew
Carle as Mr. Salt, Bradley Shoop as Mike Teevee,
and Angela Erdman as Mrs. Teevee. Even with all of
these excellent performers, the stars of the show
were definitely the elementary-schoolers who played
the Oompa-Loompas.
The performances, held the weekend of Friday,
April 15, were very successful. Mrs. Hoover, the
director and leader of the drama club, was very
excited to see that they pulled in much larger crowds
every performance than have ever been recorded by
our drama club. Though this was due in part to the
younger children, many were excited to see the
fruits of our labors. The drama club earned more
toward next year’s
production than they ever have, because of this.
A very successful show, however, would not have been staged if it weren’t for
much hard work by the cast and crew. Mrs. Hoover was overwhelmed with the
presence of 95 auditioning children and teenagers in December, all desiring to
play an important part in the show. After the crew was selected (and it was not an
easy process), practices began with singing in January. Choreography was added
in February, and actual rehearsals began in March. Needless to say, the show
had been long in the works. Many young talents were discovered in the middle
and elementary schools, and many of the older cast-members were delighted
with the chance to help guide and teach the younger ones.
The drama club’s future also looks bright; Mrs. Hoover has also confirmed
that next year’s show will be “The Wizard of Oz.” This is obviously a timeless
classic, as a book, movie, or a musical, and is sure to be a hit from the start.
Congratulations to all of this year’s performers, and good job on putting on such
an excellent show!

Farewell
The Retiree
By Micaela Thorndyke
The end of the school year has come, and the seniors are
preparing for their graduation. Leaving Halifax High School forever,
most will never return to these small classrooms again, except if
they perhaps decide to pursue the career of teaching. Who else
might be leaving? Well, not only the students, but one of our
English teachers as well.
Ms. Kelly has been teaching at Halifax for 30 years. She
teaches AP English and 11th grade English. She is also the advisor
of the school newspaper and literary magazine. Before she cacme
to Halifax, She taught in inner-city school settings including
London, England. From middle school to high school, Ms. Kelly
has brought knowledge to young minds across the globe.
After graduating from Penn State with a BA in English, Ms. Kelly began her teaching career in 1972. She
also did graduate work in humanities at Penn State. In her early days of college, she wanted to either be
involved in counseling or teaching, and her choice of teaching eventually brought her to us. Originally, she
was from Pittsburgh but somehow found her way to the tranquil town of Halifax.
When I asked her why on earth she chose to teach high school, she said that it was because she liked
addressing the students as people instead of children, and teaching more challenging material. She hopes to
be remembered for being a teacher that was willing to help any student who needed it: a motivator.
Ms. Kelly is also an inspiration to her fellow teachers. Mrs. Nec said that she looks up to Mrs. Kelly and
uses some of her helpful, time saving techniques. Mrs. Nec admits to being intimidated by Ms. Kelly’s
wisdom at first. She laughed at the times when Ms. Kelly forgot where her glasses were when they had been
on top of her head the whole time.
Having Mr. Laudenslager, Mrs. Popchock, and all the other experienced teachers at Halifax gone, Mr.
Ruff (a former student of Ms. Kelly) said that there will be a huge vacuum that will need to be filled. Mrs. Nec
and Mr. Ruff will both be sad to see her go and say that she will be greatly missed.
Ms. Kelly will have more time for her family next year, especially her mother. She has three children, two
sons and a daughter. Her oldest son is the head football coach at Upper Dauphin; the other son is an
attorney; and her daughter, a former teacher, is now raising her three kids. She has a granddaughter who she
will be babysitting and plans to devote some time to getting back in shape. She likes running, swimming and
fitness. She also plans to tackle some home renovations
projects in her kitchen and at her log cabin. She likes to
read novels and travel. She has traveled to London, Mexico,
Canada, Denver, San Francisco, Spain, Switzerland, and
the Netherlands. When asked if she felt she made an impact
on the lives of her students, she said she hopes she did.
She takes pride in helping students prepare to shove off to
college and enter the real world. Most of us agree that we
will miss her greatly and hope to see her back at Halifax as
a substitute teacher.
