A message from the NSS President…
Hello and Congratulations, Nursing Class of 2019!
My name is Alexandra Palmeri, and it is a great honour and
privilege to be your 2015 President of the Queen’s Nursing Science
Society (NSS). The NSS is the student government within the
School of Nursing (SON) that works to represent nursing students
on a number of different levels to the University, the Faculty of
Health Sciences (FHS), and the Alma Mater Society (AMS- the
overarching student government at Queen’s). The Society also
plans conferences, workshops, spirit weeks, BBQs, fundraisers,
formals, and nursing clothing orders. We strive to help provide you with unique opportunities
that foster your professional development, strengthen your health & well-being, ignite your
ability to give back to worthy causes, and encourage your growth as Undergraduate students.
If you’re reading this, it means that you are one step closer to officially becoming a part of the
Queen’s Nursing Family. I cannot even begin to explain how excited the NSS, SON staff &
faculty, and your orientation leaders are to meet you!
As you sit reading your Orientation handbook cover-to-cover, I hope you will be inspired by
the amazing journey that lies ahead. Here at Queen’s, we pride ourselves for not only being an
institution of academic excellence, but one of endless out-of-classroom opportunity. Over the
years, I hope you will take advantage of your Queen’s experience and find your passions. I
hope you will get involved in such a way that helps you to fuel and nurture your future nursing
career. I hope you truly find joy in your time here at Queen’s!
Always remember that the NSS is here for you! Our
team has members specializing in all different areas to
to look after each of your needs, and we hope that you
will reach out whenever we can help lend a hand. Keep
your eyes peeled- there are so many ways for you to get
involved with the NSS!
You can do anything you put your mind to, Nursing
Class of 2019… WELCOME TO THE QUEEN’S

Meet the Professors
These are the people who will help you through your first year here at Queen’s!
They are so knowledgeable and want to see you succeed!
Cheryl Pulling
Subject I teach: Nursing 101, 345, and 492
Office location: Cataraqui Room 112
Education Background: MScN (Toronto), BNSc (Queen’s)
Favorite thing about Queen’s: The people. Everyone is great, student’s are energetic and keen to learn. My
colleagues within nursing and all across campus are good to work with. I learn from them everyday.
Advice for incoming students: Stay healthy, eat well and get adequate sleep. Enjoy friends!
Advice for how to succeed in class: Attend all classes, tutorials, and seminars. Do all the required readings
and keep up with them! Do not leave them until the exams! Participating in all learning activities and be
positive about learning! Focus on learning rather than marks!
Dr. Allan Baer
Subject I teach: Physiology
Office location: Botterell 430
Education Background: BSc & MSc (physiology-UWO), PhD (UofA), BEd (Queen’s) plus 10 years teaching
every grade from kindergarten to high school
Favorite thing about Queen’s: Small campus feel with big campus opportunities
Advice for incoming students: It’s more work than you think. Being organized really helps. Help is
available to you, but you need to ask. Too many don’t (or wait too long) when they should. Instructors are
here to help you. Take advantage of that. In the end, it’s up to you.
Advice for how to succeed in class: Read my “How To Succeed” page on the class Moodle site
Stephen Leighton
Subject I teach: Intro to Philosophy, Moral Philosophy, Ancient Philosophy, Philosophy and Emotions
Education Background: B.A. in Philosophy (Alberta), M.A in Philosophy (Alberta), Ph.D. in Philosophy (Texas)
Favorite thing about queens: Students
Advice for incoming students: Work very hard; be sure to enjoy learning and yourself while here at Queen’s;
and don’t let any of these interfere with the others.
Advice for how to succeed in class: Ask Questions, and make sure that things you do not understand get clarified.
Practice explaining the ideas you have been exposed to.

Dr.Tomalty
Subject I teach: Microbiology
Office location: 18 Barrie street
Education Background: Bachelor’s of science (Concordia), Masters in Science (U of A), PhD (T.O)
Favorite thing about Queen’s: The Students
Advice for incoming students: Since this is your first year at University, you will find the teaching and learning
environment very different from what you have been used to. Don’t let yourself get overloaded and make sure you get
plenty of exercise!
Advice for how to succeed in class: Stay focused in class…….it is only 50 minutes a day (hide that cell phone in your
backpack and don’t get it out until class is over!). Don’t let your reviews of the material taught in class pile up on you.
Spend an hour outside class reviewing the classroom material. This will help you in the end.
Dr. Vinay Singh
Subject I teach: Introduction to Biochemistry
Office location: 253 Botterell Hall
Education Background: MBA and PhD
Favorite thing about Queen’s: Wonderful students
Advice for incoming students: Stay in close contact with your upper year classes

for a reason

This class focuses on nutrition as a
determinant of health. You will learn
about the role of nutrition in
promoting health and how it relates
to the nursing as well as everyday
life. Pro tip: talking about food will
make you hungry so don’t be afraid
to bring snacks to class!
