READINGS FOR SUNDAY, APRIL 10, 2016
THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
First Reading: Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41
Second Reading: Revelation 5:11-14
Gospel: John 21:1-19 or 21:1-14
PARISH SACRIFICIAL GIVING
FOCUS: Our Eucharistic celebration resounds
with a bold proclamation: Worthy is the Lamb.
The second reading offers a vibrant visual of what is
taking place during our Sunday Mass. As the Catechism
says, “In the earthly liturgy we share in a foretaste of that
heavenly liturgy.” (CCC 1090) Like the Apostles in the
first reading, we, through our prayer and ritual action,
boldly profess Jesus as Lord. Again, according to the
Catechism, we “join the unending praise that the Church
in heaven, the angels and all the saints sing.” (CCC 1352)
LITURGY OF THE WORD
In the first reading, Peter and the Apostles are again
ordered not to preach in Jesus’ name. They boldly
proclaim, We must obey God rather than men. In the
reading from Revelation, John shares a vision of
witnessing all of creation giving praise and honor to the
Lamb who was slain. The Gospel recounts a
post-resurrection appearance of Jesus to the disciples,
where Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves him.
Readings for next week, April 17: Fourth Sunday of
Easter: Acts 13:14, 43-52; Revelation 7:9, 14b-17; John
10:27-30

THE PASTOR’S PAGE
My dear people of St. Mary’s,
Each week, the Pastor’s Page, along with the rest of the bulletin, must be submitted for publication by
Wednesday at 2:00 pm. So, as I write this column on Monday morning, I am aware that on Friday, in Rome, Pope
Francis will be releasing his Apostolic Exhortation: Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love). So, by the time you read
this, you will most likely already have heard about this new document in the media. However, I did not want a
week to go by without being able to speak to you on this topic, so here are some preliminary words of
explanation.
An Apostolic Exhortation is a document issued by a pope in the aftermath of a synod. A synod is a special
meeting of bishops to discuss a particular topic. Recently, Pope Francis hosted the “Synod on the Family.” You
may recall hearing about that event in the news at the time. Some 190 bishops from around the world participated
in the two-part gathering in 2014 and 2015, whose theme was “the vocation and mission of the family in the
Church and the modern world.”
You may also recall there was some controversy about the synod at the time. Some of the members of the
episcopal conference of Germany spoke strongly in favor of changing Church teaching on a number of Catholic
moral issues, including divorce, remarriage, the reception of Holy Communion and other topics. These
controversies were exacerbated by media reports and speculation, as well as by some unkind comments one of the
German Cardinals made in the press about bishops and cardinals from Africa, who tend as a group to be very
faithful when it comes to Church teachings. That same cardinal was reported last week as saying that the papal
document, projected to be more than two-hundred pages in length, will represent “the first step in a reform” that
will mark the “turning of a page” in the Church’s history “after 1,700 years.” This is almost certainly false,
especially since this particular individual has been caught in untruths before.
What we do know is that the Vatican has confirmed that the Apostolic Exhortation will be presented to
journalists at the Holy See’s Press Office on Friday, April 8, at 11.30am (Roman time). There will be a panel of
speakers to introduce the documents including Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, general secretary of the Synod of
Bishops; Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, O.P., Archbishop of Vienna; and an Italian married couple, Professor
Francesco Miano, and his wife, Professor Giuseppina De Simone in Miano.
What the document will say, I do not know at the time of this writing. However, I do know that by the time
you are reading this you will already have heard the media’s “first-take” on the document. One word of caution.
Please recall that when the mainstream media reports on the Roman Catholic Church, her beliefs, her teachings,
her history, and her writings, they almost invariably get things wrong. This is because so many in the media selfidentify as having no religion themselves. They so often report on religion and religious topics in a way that defies
description. They just do not seem to understand religion, religious people or their churches. However, they do
love headlines, and the more shocking the better. When Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI published his book on the
Christmas stories of the Gospels, the British newspaper Daily Mail ran the following headline: “Killjoy Pope
Crushes Christmas Nativity Traditions.” Needless to say, every word was a lie. But I am sure it sold a lot of
papers.
I will be most happy if, by the time you read this, the press has reported truthfully, accurately, and soberly on
this papal document. However, at my age, I have learned not to hope for the impossible. So, do not be upset if you
hear a great deal of sensationalism in the media about this. Remember that it will take some time for the Church to
read, understand, and assimilate all the Holy Father has two say in such a lengthy document. And so often, what
Pope Francis has to say cannot be reduced to a mere “sound-bite” or a provocative headline. What he has to say
must be understood and read in context of the larger teaching the Pope has for us on the issue of the Family in the
Modern World. And, as your pastor, I not only look forward to reading this document myself, but also to being
able to help all of you to understand it as well.

YEAR -END TAX STATEMENTS
It‘s costly to send an end-of-the year tax
statement to every household in the parish, and
not everyone is interested in receiving it. So if
you’d like a statement reflecting your giving to St.
Mary’s for 2015, please phone the parish office at
621-2222 and someone will send one on to you. If
there’s no one at the phones when you call, feel
free to leave a message on the machine with
pertinent information: who’s requesting, address,
and a phone number in case verification is
needed.
In this compelling and timely book, best-selling author
Vinny Flynn draws from Scripture, the teachings of the
Church, and the Diary of St. Faustina to reveal the heart
of Divine Mercy. He offers an invitation and a road map
so that Divine Mercy, the overflow of love from the Holy
Trinity, can transform your life
Praise for 7 Secrets of Divine Mercy
"Imagine if someone were to deeply ponder and powerfully proclaim the mystery of Divine Mercy for more than
35 years and then gather the most precious insights into
one place. You've imagined this book."
