2014 Program
A one-day
festival of
over 1,300
free concerts
in parks
and streets
citywide
returns with over 1,300 free concerts on
the first day of summer!
On Saturday, June 21st,
from 10 in the morning
until 10 at night,
musicians of all ages
and musical persuasions
will perform in over 400
public spaces throughout the five boroughs,
including playgrounds,
piers, sidewalks, gardens, closed-off streets,
the steps of the Brooklyn Public Library, and
porches on Governors Island.
From established global artists to teenage
garage bands, music is played by anyone who
wants to take part — and enjoyed by everyone
who wants to listen. Just like the city itself,
the range of offerings is spectacular. From 100
saxophonists to bluegrass jams, from Punk Island to gamelan orchestras, from hip hop block
parties to brass band marathons, there is something for every listener.
But don’t just listen — join the festival and
make music yourself! Bring your instrument
to a Mass Appeal event, pick up the mic on the
Privia Piano Bar truck, create your own New
York Walkscape with your iPhone, or join a
synchronized “vocamotive choir”!

Mass Appeal is
back for a sixth year,
giving New Yorkers
without groups of
their own a chance to
take part in the musicmaking, by gathering
hundreds of musicians
to play pieces written
for single types of
instruments. From the
rusty saxophonist
to the professional
harmonica player, all
are welcome to join
these 17 epic events!
Throughout this
program you will see
this symbol for each
Mass Appeal event
Mass Appeal is made possible
in part with public funds from the
Fund for Creative Communities,
supported by New York State
Council on the Arts with the support
of Governor Andrew Cuomo and
the New York State Legislature
and administered by Lower
Manhattan Cultural Council. Major
underwriting is provided by The
NAMM Foundation.

MMNY merges with the Dark Circuits
Festival featuring contemporary electronic
music practices: circuit bending, noinput mixers, and more. This event is
for littleBits: tiny synthesizer modules
connected via magnets for quick changes
in the signal chain, fitting into a modular
system for infinite combinations of audio
experience. littleBits has generously
donated 20 kits to create a massive piece
of synthesizer music – just bring yourself
(and your friends)! We are looking for 20
players to take part in the workshop at
4pm, then perform at 6pm. To join, contact

Rhythm
on Rikers
Make Music
New York has
organized
summer solstice
concerts on
Rikers Island
since 2011, for
prisoners and
guards who
rarely get to experience live music
in their daily lives.
Our groundbreaking program,
Rhythm on Rikers, returns again
this year to share hand drumming
lessons and music theory with ten
men and ten women on Rikers
Island. Led by the drummers
of TIGUE, MMNY provides
weekly two-hour sessions on
hand drumming techniques,
improvisation, traditional West
African music, and rhythm-based
theory.
On June 20st, after 10 weeks of
lessons, all of the students and
teachers will play together at a
final Make Music New York concert
for the larger inmate population.
Following the concert, we will offer
students additional free weekly
individual lessons upon their
release, and opportunities to play
at future MMNY celebrations.

And Death
Shall Have
No Dominion
This year, in honor of the
centenary of the birth of
Dylan Thomas, Make Music
New York presents And
Death Shall Have No
Dominion by composer
Pete M. Wyer.
And Death Shall Have No
Dominion is a participatory
singing event for a
synchronized headphone
choir in honor of Dylan
Thomas’s famous poem.
Using an app that contains
the accompaniment and
synchronizes their mobile
devices, participants set-off
along 45-minute walking
routes through lower
Manhattan, singing the
words of the renowned poet
across the landscape of his
final days.
The performers begin their
walk individually on June
21 at 11:00 am, singing just
one part. Little by little, as
routes converge, the song
is revealed in its fullness
until eventually, everyone
assembles together for a
grand choral finale near
Poets House in Lower
Manhattan.
Participants are invited to
reflect on Thomas’s words
that famously declare triumph
over death in the context of
their own personal journey.
Anyone can take part – it is
unnecessary to read music
or to have sung in a choir
previously.
To learn more and take part,
visit makemusicny.org/wyer
And Death Shall
Have No Dominion is
co-presented by Lower
Manhattan Cultural Council,
Make Music New York
and Poets House as part of
the River To River Festival
2014. Special thanks to app
developer David Reeder and
to the generous support of
the British Council.

New York WALKSCAPE
“Absolutely fascinating…almost like your own movie, your own
soundscape but you are actually in control.”
– Janice Forsyth, The Culture Studio, BBC Radio Scotland
Imagine walking through Lower Manhattan and hearing the sounds around you become everchanging music as you move. From one spot to the next sounds differ and the character of what
you hear shifts. Your experience takes on a personal soundtrack, changing your perception and
awareness.
New York Walkscape, by Dutch composer duo Strijbos & Van Rijswijk opens up an entirely new aural
layer within the city. This software-coded musical score is unraveled by the physical exploration of
Lower Manhattan (formerly New Amsterdam). Based on the custom-built iPhone app called Walk With
Me, the Walkscape deploys GPS for musical purposes and blurs the boundaries between installation
and composition.
Using melodies, rhythmic patterns, chatter, and electronic sounds from a variety of young American
composers (from New York’s MATA Festival) and Dutch composers (from the Gaudeamus Music
Week), the piece invites participants to enter into a musical conversation with their city. All you need
is a pair of headphones and an iPhone.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the Consulate General of the Netherlands in
New York, and by the Performing Arts Fund NL.
Download the app from makemusicny.org/walk
