Soquel Ave at the Buttery and Gault Elementary School
Gault Elementary School invites all of Santa Cruz to come out and
enjoy our annual fall celebration. Festivities include the Costume
Parade down Soquel Avenue and culminate with the Carnival on
the Gault School grounds, featuring games, food, prizes, music, and
trophies for the best home-made costumes! Costume judging and
parade assembly is at 9:00 am on Soquel at The Buttery. Parade
march begins at 9:30 am. All are invited to march in the parade!
The carnival will follow immediately, and will continue until 2:00 pm.
Carnival activities include a Spinning Barrel-o-Fun Ride, Sugar
Skull decorating, our ever-popular cakewalk, jump house, and other

Preschool & Children
KIDS KORNER CO-OP 3 - 5 yrs

Kids’ Korner Co-op provides an environment for preschoolers to
learn, play and socialize. Hands-on curriculum includes the use of
pre-kindergarten material, music, art, science, social awareness and
life skills. Class curriculum is identical for MW and TTH classes.
Parents may only register for two days a week.
A Pre-K class (#15974) is available on Fridays beginning in January.
If you have a child entering kindergarten in the fall, you may register
for this engaging Pre-K class. Children must be concurrently registered in the MW or TTh class to attend the Pre-K class.
On the first day of each session, parents should plan to stay 15
minutes for a meeting with the instructor. Bring a copy of child’s
current immunization record the first day of class. Preschoolers
should be toilet trained. Bring a lunch daily labeled with their name.
There is no program on holidays. Co-op volunteers must be fingerprinted by law (free to volunteers) before helping in the classroom.

Are you ready to tumble? This class will introduce children to basic
gymnastics and tumbling skills: cartwheels, hand stands, bridges,
bar work and beam. The instructor will lead the students through
obstacle courses, play activities and one-on-one coaching and
spotting. Gymnastics is a great way to increase coordination,

Join us for this exciting new class offered at the Tannery Arts Center! We will use watercolors, pastels and photography to learn about
the contest art world and our natural environment. This class will
be taught by Linda Cover, who has received several art awards,
including “Art and Poetry Teacher of the Year” for the National
River of Words. Her students have been exhibited widely and have
won numerous international, national and local acclaim. A material fee of $10.00 is due to the instructor in the first class.

The Suzuki method can be explained by what's known as the
“Mother Tongue Approach.” By studying and cataloging the various
behaviors of infants and parents during language acquisition, extracting the dynamics that produce the best results, you'll see the
foundational principals of the Suzuki method emerge! Parents are
required to attend the first 15 minutes of the session and encouraged to come to all sessions. The first class will be a group meeting. The remaining three classes will be 15-20-minute-long private
lessons. A $2.00 material fee is due to the instructor in the first
class. Only a nylon string guitar of proper size will be allowed. If
you don't have a guitar, the instructor may have some available for
rental or can refer you to music stores.

Students will learn about Japanese culture and visit local
points of interest. Students must have a genuine interest
in Japan and must pay their own travel expenses. Partial

This class focuses on playing with other musicians in a band setting. Open to bass, guitar, drum, keyboard and vocalists. Other

players must bring their own keyboard. All students should know

to dance Salsa. Two skilled and non-intimidating instructors will

Marine Safety Division
City Lifeguards are generally on duty
over spring break, spring weekends,
daily from Memorial Day through Labor
Day, and fall weekends through October.
Service area is from Cowell Beach to the
San Lorenzo River and throughout the
city for aquatic emergencies. Hours may vary depending on
local weather conditions.
MARINE RESCUE POSITIONS
The Marine Rescue unit provides 24-hour response to water
rescues in the City of Santa Cruz. Members are required to
live within 10 minutes of the Municipal Wharf. Members need
to have an extensive aquatic background and prior ocean
lifeguarding and emergency medical training are desirable.
Applications are accepted year-round. For 2012, final filing
date for applications will be August 17. Applications can be
submitted at Lifeguard Headquarters or Fire Administration,
230 Walnut Ave, Attn: Captain Rob Oatey. The selection/
interview process and 40-hr training course will be scheduled
for September 2012.

COWELL BEACH ACCESS
The City of Santa Cruz provides an accessibility ramp for persons
with limited mobility, wheelchairs and strollers. The accessibility ramp
is located on Cowell Beach between the Wharf and the Santa Cruz
Dream Inn. The ramp allows access to the beach and ocean, and
is installed in spring depending upon surf and beach conditions. A
beach accessible chair for persons with limited mobility is available
at Cowell Beach near Lifeguard Tower #1 during operating hours. No
aides are provided. Chair may be used on a first-come, first-served
basis daily from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm Memorial Day through Labor
Day. ID required. The Boardwalk also provides an accessibility ramp
which is located on the Main Beach adjacent to the Casino. This
ramp is available for use during the summer months.

This two-day course will teach you the fundamentals of sailing and
seamanship on the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. A
total of 12 hours (two 6-hr. days) of hands-on instruction will provide
you with the skills and confidence you need to safely skipper or
crew a 27' to 30' tiller sailboat in light to moderate wind and sea
conditions. The Basic Sailing and Seamanship course is the first
two days of our 8-day, American Sailing Association Certification

WOMEN’S BEGINNER SURFING CLINIC 13 yrs & up 2 days
This is a two-day introduction-to-surfing clinic designed with the
beginning woman surfer in mind. Each participant will learn about
ocean awareness, surf breaks, ocean conditions, safety in and out
of the water, surf etiquette, paddling, push up and pop up techniques
as well as balancing. All students will start out in the shallow water
riding the whitewash until they are comfortable with venturing
further out. This class is taught by instructors from GirlsAdventureOut Surf School (www.adventureout.com). We provide a nonthreatening environment for the beginning surfer. Come have fun
learning how to surf and explore the wonders of surfing with our
experienced team of instructors! Wetsuits and surfboards are

homes will open their doors so you can experience their unique
lifestyle first hand. This extraordinary event draws people from
all over California and beyond. This is a self-guided tour but
docents will also be available to describe the unique waterfront
lifestyle and answer questions. Expect to walk approximately 2
miles and access the homes by sloped, floating docks.
Refreshments, live entertainment, and an art show will be

Join us for a three hour Historical Bay Bridges Tour aboard the
USS Potomac. Boarding the ship at Jack London Square, our
cruise will head out on San Francisco Bay. You will see and learn
all about the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge, Richmond/San
Rafael Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. Including behindthe-scenes stories of construction and historical facts of each
historical landmark bridge. A boxed lunch is included on this trip.
Please note, depending on weather conditions, the San Francisco
Bay can be rough and windy. Dressing in layers and wearing
shoes with good traction is strongly encouraged.
Time will be available after the cruise for you to investigate
historical Jack London Square before heading home. Pricing

CITY SPORTS LEAGUES FOR ADULTS
The City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department offers a
variety of adult sports leagues. Follow registration information to
register a team! Print the roster and league information from the
Parks and Recreation website at www.santacruzparksandrec.com.
Return the manager’s card, signed roster/waiver, proofs of residency
and the registration fee. Returning teams must have 55% of last
year’s roster and register by "earlybird" to receive priority ranking.
GOLF BEGINNING – ADULT 18 yrs & up 4 days
This introductory golf class is perfect for those who are interested
in an overview of the game. Classes will cover driving, chipping,
putting, and basic rules and etiquette. Clubs are provided by the
