Time to Register and Vote
by Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel - Executive Vice President, Agudath Israel of America
Please take a simple step that will enhance our community's political clout: Everyone in
your family above the age of 18 should register to vote, and then vote in the upcoming
election.
The simple reality is that politicians look at which groups vote, and cast their own votes
on the major issues of the day accordingly. Communities that vote are communities that
are listened to and heard.
Securing political support with regard to the issues that affect us deeply - ensuring the
security of Eretz Yisroel, combating domestic and international terrorism, preserving the
moral climate of society, protecting our most precious religious liberties, increasing
government aid to our educational institutions, maximizing the amount and quality of
government services available in our neighborhoods - depends on each and every
individual taking the time to register to vote.
This year, especially, with so many dangers and challenges facing the Jewish
people around the world, it is absolutely critical that we make our collective voice
heard through the ballot box.
Generations of Gedolei Torah have clearly stated that voting is an important halachic
imperative as well as a civic duty.
Everyone in your household who will be 18 years old or older on Election Day
(November 6) should be registered to vote today. In most states, you can register up until
30 days before the election. To register, simply call your local board of elections to obtain
registration forms (or go here - http://votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/register-to-vote), and
mail them back promptly. If you need additional help, please call our office at
212-797-7383 or email [email protected]. So please, take the time to register and vote in the upcoming election for yourself . . . for
your children . . . for your community . . . for Klal Yisroel.

** If a woman is lighting at home and making a stipulation that she is not accepting Yom Kippur
upon herself, she should not say the Shehecheyanu Bracha at candlelighting. Rather, she should
say it when it is said in shul. One also has to make sure that the candle will still be burning when
you return home.
