God Loves Givers Who Give With The Right Attitude
The scene was really nothing to laugh about, but it unleashed howls of delight, caused several
fender-benders and brought traffic to a screeching halt on a busy freeway. People were
literally jumping from their cars and rushing to grab the loot—several hundred thousand
dollars worth—that was flying out the back door of an armored truck. The driver had failed to
lock the door and the money was sucked out as if being removed by a giant vacuum. Even
after the police arrived it took quite a while for order to be restored, and much of the money
was never recovered.
The security guard failed to be diligent, and it cost the woman her job. Chances are she never
imagined so many strangers would take advantage of her foolish misfortune. Her experience
reminds us that there are several forms of generosity. In the case of the flying funds, the
generosity was completely unintentional. Sometimes, generosity is reluctant, particularly
when one feels pressured to give. Generosity can also be manipulative, especially in situations
where a gift is given for some ulterior motive. And it’s not uncommon for generosity to be
self-serving when one gives to gain some attention or advantage. In stark contrast, Biblical
generosity is like none of these. It is intentional, not the least bit reluctant, not manipulative
and definitely not self-serving. Above all, it is full of joy. As the Apostle Paul explained in 2
Corinthians 9:7, it is prompted by what one “has decided in his heart to give, not
reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
Herein is one of the most important principles for balanced Christian living and it is called
“The Law of Hilarious Generosity”. The word translated as “cheerful” in most English
Bibles literally means “hilarious”. It carries the idea of one who is uproariously delighted to
give. Not grudgingly, like some sort of scrooge or miser, but freely and openly and happily.
It’s the absolute opposite of one who gives to God because he feels he can’t refuse to give, or
because someone else is giving and it would reflect poorly on him if he didn’t give. Living by
the Law of Hilarious Generosity, one does not give under the whiplash of necessity,
complaining inwardly or being bitter in any way. Rather, one is thankful to even be able
to give.
God’s purpose is that we serve Him fully and that we give hilariously to the Mission of His
Holy Church! Keep in mind these practical perspectives for you to become a hilarious giver in
the Name of Jesus Christ!
1. DON’T TALK YOURSELF OUT OF GIVING. Whenever you have a good
opportunity to give, take it. Look for opportunities to give generously, and live with an
eager anticipation of how God will use you to bless others and please Him.
2. TAKE MONEY SERIOUSLY, BUT NOT TOO SERIOUSLY. The Bible says in
Proverbs 23:4 “Don’t wear yourself out to get rich.” Money is important, but it is not
everything, and it cannot bring true satisfaction to your life. If you take money too
seriously it can cloud your judgment and alter your motives. The generous giver
remembers that money is a means to an end., not the end itself.
3. GIVE WITH A SMILE, NOT A CRINGE. When one gives with hilarious
generosity, it’s only natural to smile. God’s desire is not that we go through life simply
collecting things and holding on to them. He wants us to give and give and give, just as
He, Christ Jesus Himself does to you and for you!
Hope to see you in worship this coming Sunday morning!
Love & Peace!!

A Positive Attitude . . .
During the Holocaust, Anne Frank, a German-Jewish girl, and her family hid in a secret
place in a home in Amsterdam. They were caught and sent to a concentration camp where
Anne died of an illness at 15.
Her diary, which details her activities, thoughts and hardships during the months of hiding,
is a classic work. It shows that Anne was a positive thinker who did not focus on the misery
she faced, but on what she called “the glory that remains.”
She wrote: “Think of the beauty that again and again discharges itself within and without
you, and be happy.” Thinking of Anne Frank’s words this Thanksgiving, perhaps we can be
reminded of the God-given beauty in our own lives — the joyous gifts of our families and
friends, the abundant bounties of nature, and the very breath we breathe.
No matter what has knocked us to our knees in the past or is weighing heavily upon us now,
we can remember that God’s love and power are still available to us in the final victory.
Anne Frank made the right choices and so can we.
HOMECOMIN
Success
How can I express gratitude for the “call” to
preach at Macedonia’s Homecoming on
September 24th? I guess the best thing
would be to tell you what a “grace-filled”
experience it was for Martin and me. As
you know, my “CALL” to ministry was first
experienced at Macedonia with the wise
and wonderful Rev. Dr. Harold Terry.
Evelyn Apple, Celebration Singers, Steve
Rust and Terry Woodings all added to this
day of spirit-filled, musical ministry and I will
treasure this memory for years to come!
Christlove,
Suzanne Shoffner
(A Presby-Lutheran)
We would like to thank
everyone who helped
to make Homecoming a true success. A
special thanks to Rev. Suzanne Shoffner for
presenting the message and visiting with us.
It was also a blessing to have Mrs.
Evelyn Apple in the service and to see
some faces we have not seen in a while.
All of the special music was well received
and appreciated.
Thanks to all who
shared their talents and abilities with us.
We all enjoyed lunch after the service
with some wonderful food and fellowship.
We look forward to sharing this time with
friends and family for years to come!
What a great Homecoming for 2006!!!
As you know visitations of members who are ill, and their
families, is an important part of Pastor Rust’s ministry at
Macedonia. We would like to remind everyone, to have a
family member notify the church office if a member is
hospitalized. Due to the new confidentiality rules, the
hospital will not give out any information.
Sunday, November 19
after the 10:30 worship service
we will have our annual
Congregational Meeting.
Following the Congregational Meeting,
lunch will be served in Luther Hall.
Menu is as follows:

The Chrismons currently used at Macedonia are VERY old and VERY fragile. If there is enough interest of the
members of Macedonia, the Fellowship Committee will sponsor Chrismon making sessions next year and invite
someone from Ascension to train us. Please visit the Church during the Advent and Christmas Seasons to learn
about Chrismons and hopefully increase interest in trying to add to our tree or replace some of our ornaments.

in making Chrismons, please contact Yvonne White, 919-563-3351.
“This life therefore, is not godliness but the process
of becoming godly, not health but getting well, not
being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not
now what we shall be, but we are on the way. The
process is not yet finished, but it is actively going on.
This is not the goal, but it is the right road. At
present, everything does not gleam and sparkle, but
everything is being cleansed.”
- Martin Luther
Reformer, listener, change agent. All of these terms describe Martin
Luther, whose active, engaging and questioning faith equipped him
to step out with a bold voice of reform.
We live in a complacent, inactive society, yet we are distracted and
exhausted by the pace of it. Our heritage is a reminder that we are
reformers. The waters of baptism empower us to be countercultural.
It’s time for reformation! Live as a new creation in Christ by sharing
your faith, being a good steward of your God-given gifts, and caring
for your body, mind and spirit.
Turn away from the ways of this world. Pray for strength to reform
your lifestyle and find balance. Be in touch with your emotions.
Share your God-given gifts for vocational well-being. Nurture your
mind and your relationships. Seek forgiveness and grow in your
relationship with God.
Celebrate your faith as you move forward on your journey to
wellness. God promises to walk with you every step of the way —
boldly, into reformation!
That it may be well with you!

October 23, 2006
Dear Macedonians,
As many of you know, it’s our tradition to collaborate with Holy Comforter Episcopal
Church and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church to provide Christmas presents for Alamance
County children living in foster homes.
For those of you who are new to this project, here’s a brief overview. The children on
the attached list are placed in foster homes for reasons of abuse, neglect, broken homes or
parents who are unable to care for them. Foster care is considered a temporary arrangement
until such time as families can be rehabilitated or until the child can be adopted or placed in a
more permanent situation. Minimal funds for their care are provided by the state, but no money
is allotted for toys or special occasions. Our three churches do our best to fill this void. These
children truly need our love and support.
The children’s wish lists are divided among the three churches. We are responsible for
providing a memorable Christmas for all the children on our list. Please review the enclosed
list and consider providing for one of the children or perhaps you may want to buy one or more
items and combine efforts with another family or group. No gift is too small when given with
love. Remember, this is a “WISH LIST” of things they WANT and like all children, they write
them all down and hope. We do for them as we do for our own—the best we can. It’s
important however, to tell us specifically what you plan to buy so we don’t duplicate efforts.
If you cannot shop, a cash donation is certainly appreciated. Any amount is gratefully
received and will be pooled with other contributions to provide for the children. If you have
access to special items such as socks, stocking stuffers or any items we can use, please let us
know.
We ask that you make your selections by Sunday, November 19 and call Vicky Hunley
at 584-3407 to confirm your selection. We have a sheet outlining the specifics about labeling,
dates and so forth. Just stop by and see one of us at the angel tree in the Narthex. We’ll be
there before and after the services the next few weeks. Gift Drop Off date by Nov. 22nd (church
office).
If you have questions, please feel free to call. Please mail checks payable to: “Foster
Children’s Christmas Fund” c/o Vicky Hunley, 406 Neese Drive, Burlington, NC 27215.
Donations are welcome anytime, but requested by December 1.
We are truly thankful for the generosity of our congregation who has supported this
ministry through the years. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Vicky Hunley, Kay Johnson and Connie Poovey

In the first days and
years of Christianity, all
Christians were often called
saints (see 1 Corinthians 1:2,
NRSV). As time went on, certain
Christians who lived holy and
sanctified lives became special
examples of truly living “above the
crowd” in their dedication and service on
God’s behalf. As other Christians recognized
these very pious souls, the Roman Catholic
Church began to cherish them as true saints,
commendable as examples to be remembered and appreciated. It
was and is still the Pope who, after a thorough examination of the
life of the holy person under consideration, can officially
designate the person as a saint.
Charles Wesley’s Affirmation
Faith, mighty faith, the promise sees,
And looks to God alone;
Laughs at impossibilities,
And cries, “It shall be done!”

Protestants, following the New Testament,
may still consider all Christians as saints.
Yet those very unique Christians who have
exhibited great commitment to Christ in
special ways are often hailed as being saintly,
especially after death. Phillips Brooks, for
example, an Episcopal priest in Boston, was honored for his
godliness with a statue placed in front of Boston’s Trinity Church.
The sculpture depicts Christ resting his hand upon Brooks.
service of
On All Saints’ Day, all Christians
should remember those like Brooks
who have faithfully passed the
torch of faith and service to
Christ’s followers. A special
worship is fitting.

The children of
Macedonia will present their annual
Christmas pageant on the evening of December 10th.
Rehearsals will be on Saturdays during November and
the first part of December. If you are interested in taking
part in the pageant in any way, please let Sylvia know.
We will need children, teens, parents, and anyone else
who might lend a helping hand. We'll be looking for
singers, speakers, musicians and costumers.
Thanksgiving Eve Worship
We gather in our sanctuary on
Wednesday, November 22 at 7:00 p.m.
to celebrate Holy Communion. We
give our thanks to God for our many
blessings and we are asking everyone
who comes to bring a bag of groceries and place them in
front of the altar. They will be given to Loaves and Fishes!
