During 2010, Camp Boggy Creek celebrated its 15th anniversary.
Since opening in 1996, over 50,000 children and family members have
experienced the magic of Boggy Creek! Thousands of dedicated and
caring individuals have been a part of this historic milestone, and we
offer our sincere gratitude.
gift from Hugh and Wendy Durden. The building will be located at
the entrance of the camp and will literally “welcome” campers,
families and all visitors who enter our gates. The architectural
design will be consistent with the other buildings at Camp–
“Florida Cracker” style. The construction will be completed in 2011.
Last year alone over 4,000 children and family members attended one
of our programs. “Let Your Love Shine” was our summer theme as we
welcomed 1,132 campers and Leaders in Training during eight camping
sessions. We offered 17 Family Retreat weekends and hosted
528 families.
• Two of our Board members, Whit Palmer and Pam Paul were
nominated and recognized as members of the Camp’s Emeritus
Board. Whit and Pam were involved during the original construction
of the Camp and worked tirelessly to make Boggy Creek a reality
for Florida’s seriously ill children.
Other highlights include:
• Camp Boggy Creek received the Community Service Award from the
Florida Health Care Coalition (FHCC). The Camp was recognized at
the FHCC Annual Meeting on April 30th. The Florida Health Care
Coalition was founded in 1984 and represents nearly two million
members of public and private sector employers.
• Last year we welcomed Diane Holm as a new Board member.
Diane and her husband Eric live in Maitland, Florida and have been
in the Central Florida region for over 20 years. Diane’s passion for
helping children and families is extraordinary and we are honored
to have her join the Board.
• The 3rd Annual Schwarzkopf Society Recognition luncheon honoring
our major donors was held on Saturday, March 27th. Over $1 million
was raised in donations at the Society level. Our Board Development
Committee has been very involved with this initiative under the
outstanding leadership of Board members, Wendy and Hugh Durden.
• The annual Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children was very successful
with over 800 in attendance. We are grateful to the entire Rossmeyer
Family for their continued dedication to support Boggy Creek. The
fundraising goal of $200K was exceeded with over $270,000 raised
to support Camp programs.
• Our Board approved the construction of a new Welcome Center for
the Camp. Capital funding for the project included the following
gifts: The Martin Andersen-Gracia Andersen Foundation pledged a
lead gift of $1 million, a $500,000 donation from the Lawrence J.
and Florence A. De George Charitable Trust, and a $100,000 capital
As we look back on the past year, it is with great pride that we share
our accomplishments. Along with our Board and staff, there have been
numerous individuals, corporations, foundations, healthcare partners,
hospitals, doctors, nurses and program volunteers that have shared
their time, talent and treasures to ensure our campers experienced the
healing power of camp. For this we are forever grateful.
We are humbled as we reflect on the entire history of the Camp
including the early days of planning and the incredible vision and tenacity of our Founders and Founding Board members to create a medically
supported Camp for thousands of seriously ill children to share love and
laughter. It is with heartfelt appreciation that we thank all those who
have been a part of the success of Boggy Creek.
We look forward to the future and serving more children and families.
Thank you for helping make the hopes and dreams of seriously ill
children come true.

In the summer of 1996, Camp Boggy Creek opened and welcomed
Florida’s most seriously ill children for a week of empowerment and lifechanging programs. Among the hundreds of children arriving during the
first summer was a young girl named Sara. She would eventually become
one of thousands who would realize a dream and become part of the
legacy as Camp Boggy Creek celebrates Shining Bright for 15 Years.
As Sara reflects on her time at Camp Boggy Creek, it becomes difficult
to pick one favorite thing about the Camp. She shares, “As a camper, I
could be myself and play and make new friends. It was the best time of
my life! As a counselor, it’s really the same except the role is reversed
and now I’m forming friendships with campers and making sure they
have the best time of their lives.”
Sara Brodeur was diagnosed with lymphoid leukemia (a childhood cancer
that affects white blood cells) when she was four years old. Though her
story began as a young girl looking for answers to difficult questions, her
path has traveled full circle as she returns to Boggy Creek as a volunteer
and summer counselor. “I knew from the moment I visited Camp Boggy
Creek that this was the most magical place in the entire world,” recalls
Sara on her first visit to Camp. After months of treatment and numerous
visits to hospitals, Sara’s doctor referred her and her family to Boggy
Creek where they discovered unconditional friendship and love. The connection with other kids just like her was immediate. “You realize that
you’re not alone at Boggy Creek and that others, especially kids,
understand what you are going through,” she shares.
Like so many of Boggy Creek’s former campers and volunteers,
Sara has chosen a career in healthcare and has been accepted in
the nursing program at the University of North Florida. She hopes
to continue volunteering as her schedule permits, but of course, her
ideal plan would be to have a nursing career that includes working at
Boggy Creek during the summers, too!
At Camp Boggy Creek, Sara was never defined by her illness. Whether
attending summer camp or a family retreat with her parents (Pamela and
Steven), Boggy Creek was a special place where she felt safe, respected
and loved. “I never felt singled out as the ‘kid with cancer,’ instead,
when I was at Boggy, I always felt like I belonged,” she says. But, Sara
also knew early on that when her time as a camper ended, she would
come back as a volunteer.
Over the past 15 years, Camp Boggy Creek has grown significantly.
During the first summer, Boggy Creek welcomed Sara and another 675
children in 10 different illness groups for summer programs; in 2010,
the Camp welcomed over 1,100 summer campers in 15 different illness
groups. The Family Retreat program has grown from hosting 90 families a year to over 550 families. Love shines brightly at Camp Boggy
Creek and the legacy will continue to grow as Sara and thousands
more like her discover a world where they are not defined by their
illness, but are safe, respected, and loved.
When Sara was 16 years old, she submitted an application and was
approved for the Leadership in Training / Camper in Transition (LIT/cit)
program. Her participation in the LIT/cit program was completed in 2007
and she quickly applied the valuable leadership skills she learned to
realize her dream of becoming a counselor. She began volunteering as a
Family Pal for the Family Retreat programs and was then hired in 2008,
2009 and 2010 as a summer staff counselor. “The LIT program provided
invaluable training so I could give back to Camp all that was given to me.
And, it did not take long for me to realize that it was just as much fun,
maybe even more, to work as a counselor! It’s a totally different connection that you make with the kids,” Sara affirmed.

Nurturing
with Love
Without the expert care and unconditional love that
volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other
medical professionals bring to the year-round family
retreat and summer programs, Boggy Creek would not
be able to provide life-changing, therapeutic camp
programs, safely and free of charge. Over 200 medical
volunteers contributed 14,000+ hours in 2010 to
ensure that each child received the specific medical
care he or she needed while enjoying a week or
weekend of normalcy. Whether distributing
medications, administering chemotherapy, monitoring
dialysis, or treating minor bumps and bruises, each
medical volunteer brings the highest level of skill and
immeasurable compassion to the children and families
who attend Camp Boggy Creek.
Like so many of Boggy Creek’s volunteers, Connie
Nixon, RN, came to help in The Patch (Boggy Creek’s
medical facility) in 1996 when the Camp first opened
and has come back every year since. A few years after
her first summer, she met Kathy Arnold, ARNP, and
Sue Bolton, RN, and the three nurses developed a
deep and caring friendship anchored at Boggy
Creek. The nurses have seen many changes over the
years and when asked about the most significant
change, Connie shares, “Because of the reputation
that Boggy Creek has for medical care, parents are
more comfortable sending their children and so we
actually are seeing much sicker children today than 15
years ago.” Sue adds, “And, at Boggy, these kids can
spread their wings and try new things that they would
never have had the chance to do at home. While at
camp, they realize that they can do things like normal
kids and that, hopefully, will never change!”

There is no question that the hours can be long and
the days very warm, especially during the summer, so
why do they do it? “Many of my friends think I’m
doing something special, and maybe that’s true, but
these children impart all this love and gratitude and we
are the ones who are touched and inspired,” declares
Kathy. “When I come and volunteer at Camp for a
week, I’ll leave exhausted, but at the same time I feel
refreshed because I get to do what I want to do and
that is to be with these amazing kids,” affirms Sue.
All the nurses and doctors agree that at Camp Boggy
Creek the children are much more comfortable
talking about their illness. “The programs at Camp
empower these kids like no other. Not only do they
have the time of their life, but they also learn how to
become independent and transition into adulthood.
It truly changes their life,” concludes Connie.
“For us, it is such a gift to know the difference we
have made in their lives.”

Bill Vessier first learned about Camp Boggy Creek
in February 1996 after seeing a picture of General
H. Norman Schwarzkopf on the cover of Florida
Magazine. The ensuing article invited readers to
support a new multi-disease, free camp for
Florida’s most seriously ill children. Bill called the
phone number included in the article for more
information and shortly thereafter reported for
duty on Boggy Creek’s opening day. “When I
walked through those gates, I knew I had found
a home,” he says.
Fifteen years later, “Mista Bill” (as he is affectionately known among campers and family members)
has contributed thousands of hours volunteering as
a counselor during summer weeks and family
weekend retreats. He actively participates in all the
Camps’ activities and has no problem keeping up
with counselors half his age, but his favorite activities are the ones where he can stimulate campers’
imaginations. “Because of their illnesses and the
challenges they present, so many of these kids
aren’t sure of their own capabilities, which really
makes it amazing to be there as they transform a
piece of wood into a race car or perform a skit or
song onstage in the theatre,” Bill shares.
Over the years, Bill has changed the lives of countless children with his limitless love and unwavering
patience. He has been “blessed” to play with the
campers and also to watch them grow. “It’s surreal
to see campers I knew as youngsters come back as
counselors. They immediately start talking about
their first time at Camp and our time together.
It truly is a priceless gift.” Bill recognizes and values
the commitment of each volunteer whether they are
at Camp or the many that remain unseen. Each year,
he joins volunteer nurse Connie and heart campers
on their bus ride from Gainesville (organized and
funded by the American Heart Association’s American
Heart Hero’s program). He is always impressed with
the time and effort that happens “behind the scenes”
and never misses an opportunity to thank others for
what they do to help campers get ready for their
week or weekend of magic.
Boggy Creek’s Camp Director, Dorcas Tomasek, and
Bill became friends immediately when Dorcas joined
the “family” in 1997. Dorcas shares, “I don’t know if
most people realize the amount of love Bill has given
through the years to so many families. From the very
beginning, he had a great pulse on the vision of
Camp and what we were trying to accomplish.
We are so lucky to have had the opportunity to be in
his presence because he is so remarkable!”
In 2010, over 1,300 volunteers donated 90,500 hours
to change the life of a seriously ill child. Mista Bill is
one of many who have brought so much to the
children and family members who visit Camp Boggy
Creek and experience its magic. The volunteers at
Boggy Creek not only contribute their time, they also
give unconditional love and commitment to each
child, allowing them to shine brightly today and
through tomorrow.

2010 Charity weekend
Special Events from Special Friends
The 16th Annual Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for
Children event, held on 10/10/10, was a great
success by all accounts. The weekend activities
included a western-themed Round Up party-the
night before the Ride-in the Coca-Cola Pavilion at
Destination Daytona. Hundreds of VIP guests
joined the Rossmeyer family and sponsors to
celebrate the induction of Helen and Robert White
into the Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children Hall of
Fame during the pre-event party. The Whites, of
White’s Site Development, Inc., joined previous
year honorees and longtime supporters Eric and
Diane Holm, Black Crow Media, Daytona Beach
Coca-Cola, and Outback Steakhouse. Guests also
enjoyed entertainment by up and coming recording artist, Cal Ecker.
Each year, many individuals and groups work tirelessly
to create their own special events to benefit Camp
Boggy Creek. These events help raise thousands of
dollars to sponsor campers and support our Camp
programs. The following represent two of the many
groups of volunteers who shine brightly for Boggy
Creek campers and families!
The Ride began with over 700 bikes lined up at
Destination Daytona for the police-escorted ride to
Camp Boggy Creek. Grand Marshals for the 2010
Ride included: Will Barclay (2010 Hoka Hey
Motorcycle Challenge winner), Aida Turturro
(actress), Frank Scott (HOG Radio), and Real Radio’s
Monsters of the Morning. Lunch was donated
and served by the wonderful folks at Outback
Steakhouse.

The weekend’s events raised over $270,000 for
Camp Boggy Creek. The total amount raised from
the Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children exceeds $4
million since it began in 1995! The event’s success

Boggy Creek 28
Almost 10 years ago, Nora Mask contacted Camp
Boggy Creek about doing an equestrian endurance
event. Her efforts would transform what began as a
“Trail Ride” fundraising event into the Boggy Creek 28
where over 100 horses are challenged on a 28-mile
wooded trail. Each rider is responsible for securing
pledges (per mile) to participate in the ride and many
receive matching donations from their employers.
This healthy competition among friends in the horse
community has raised over $50,000 for Camp Boggy
Creek. Today, the committee is headed by a team of
volunteers including the event’s Founder (Nora),
Jackie Baker, Tina Beshere, and Fran Wohnsigl.

David Reutimann’s 6th Annual
Charity Golf Tournament
David Reutimann, driver of the #00 Aaron’s Dream
Machine Toyota in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series,
hosted his 6th Annual Charity Golf Tournament,
Cook Out and Auction at Silverado Golf and Country
Club in Zephyrhills, Florida. For the third year in a row,
Camp Boggy Creek was one of the benefiting charities
for the event and received $30,000 from the David
Reutimann Foundation. “It’s a blessing to be able to
give back to those in need and none of that would be
possible without the support we received from
everyone involved,” said David, a native of Zephyrhills.
His commitment to Camp includes generous support
from his main sponsor, Aaron’s, which also contributes
generously to Camp through storewide initiatives.

For nearly two decades, General H.
Norman Schwarzkopf has dedicated
himself to the mission of Camp Boggy
Creek. In honor of his commitment,
we formed The Schwarzkopf Society
to recognize those donors who
embrace the General’s spirit of philanthropy and his steadfast commitment
to our campers. We extend our
heartfelt thanks to the following
donors who made an annual gift of
$10,000 or more during 2010 to
ensure that Florida’s most seriously
ill children have the opportunity to
enjoy a little piece of magic here at
Camp Boggy Creek.
After inquiring about the day’s activities and hearing all the fun things planned, one camper said,
“All we do here is eat and play and then eat and
play some more!” To which Trish Flynn replied,
“Welcome to Camp Boggy Creek-that’s what
it’s all about!”
Patricia (Trish) Flynn started volunteering at Boggy
Creek in 1996 when the camp opened for its first
summer. She was an experienced volunteer with
the American Cancer Society and it was a natural
fit to help during the camping session offered for
children with cancer. She was hooked and has
volunteered every summer since.
Each year, Trish rides the chartered bus from South
Florida that brings campers to Boggy Creek.
“Having someone who will be with their children
at Camp is a comfort for the parents at the sendoff locations. And the campers enjoy having someone on the bus who can answer all the questions
they may have before they actually get to the
Camp,” she shares.
Trish has also shared the magic and love of Camp
with her family and friends. Her mother, sister and
brother have all volunteered during summer camp
and family retreat weekends, as well as many of
her friends. Trish states, “Each of them has really
enjoyed themselves and recognizes what a special
place Camp Boggy Creek is.”
In addition to her generous donations of time and
in-kind items (she always arrives with rain ponchos
or other much needed items when she comes to
volunteer), Trish began contributing financially to
Camp Boggy Creek in 2001. “As I became more
established in my professional career, I was aware
of the responsibility that I had to help support the
different organizations that I believe in.”

campers. When asked what it means to be a
member of The Schwarzkopf Society, her modesty
shines through, “Honestly, it is not something that
I thought about-as I’ve said before, I believe in the
Camp and have caught the Boggy spirit.
I certainly feel a responsibility to give back and an
obligation now that I have reached this level.”
The Schwarzkopf Society was formed in honor of
General Schwarzkopf and his commitment to
Camp Boggy Creek. The Society recognizes those
donors who embrace the General’s spirit of
philanthropy and his steadfast commitment to our
campers. Trish Flynn exemplifies both. She adds,
“Over the last 15 years, I have spent fabulous
weeks with groups of people of various ages,
backgrounds and skill sets and we are able to work
together to achieve the Boggy Creek mission and
create an environment where the campers feel
safe, respected, and loved while having fun.
Spending time volunteering at a family retreat
weekend or a week at summer camp is a great
gift to yourself. The experience provides
a great perspective on life.”

A Day of Remembrance
Camp Boggy Creek receives many gifts in memory of loved ones who were touched by the magic of our mission. Each year in October, the
Camp hosts the Day of Remembrance to celebrate the spirit of these endearing and heartfelt gifts and the people for whom they were made in
memory of. In 2010, over 300 names were read during the event’s Remembrance Reading of Names. Many friends and family members joined
Camp staff and volunteers for this special tribute or, if not able to attend, participated in a special moment of silence. Guests were invited to
inscribe their loved ones’ names on stones which were placed in a special garden area. For information about the 2011 Day of Remembrance

Camp Boggy Creek provides life-changing experiences to hundreds of Florida’s
most seriously ill children. Our programs would not be possible without the
passionate dedication, remarkable skills and selfless time given during each summer
session and family retreat by our medical volunteers. In 2010, over 200 doctors,
nurses, pharmacists, and therapists contributed over 14,000 volunteer hours!
