2012 Annual Report
Honoring Family
Clyde & Carol
“
Regular contributions to a
pension fund and simple
living have enabled Clyde
and Carol Black to fund their
charitable interests including
three scholarships.
”
When Clyde Black was a younger man, he was given good advice: don’t count
on Social Security and your pension for your retirement, especially with looming
college costs for four children. So Clyde and Carol began contributing to 403b and
IRA accounts regularly. That advice has paid off, but perhaps not in the way Clyde
originally thought. One by one, each of their children assumed most of the costs of
their education beyond high school.
“Both of us grew up in families in which giving beyond tithing (10%) was taught
and practiced,” said Clyde. “So, in our retirement we began to contribute above and
beyond our giving to local churches and charities, specifically to the Wayne County
Foundation, creating a series of scholarships in honor of our children.”
Jonathan, their oldest son, now deceased, joined the Navy and later became an
Emergency Medical Technician, then a paramedic and instructor for other EMT’s.

The scholarship established in his honor focuses on the allied health fields. Established with just $1,000 in
1998, the scholarship has grown to over $33,000 with additional contributions and investment earnings.
Son Jeffrey was in the top ten of his class and excelled at math. He graduated magna cum laude from
the Air Force Academy and went on to earn his master’s and doctor’s degrees in electrical engineering.
The scholarship, established in his honor in 1999, is directed to those graduates pursuing a degree in
engineering. This scholarship fund now has assets over $32,000.
Their other son James’ first interest was the ministry and he continues to be active in his local church. In
2000, Clyde and Carol honored him with a scholarship aimed at helping those who are entering a human
service field. It, too, has grown to over $32,000.
Since being established, the scholarships have generated $75,940 in scholarship support and have helped
31 students continue their education.

Sharing Success
Two local corporations partnered with the
Foundation in 2012 to create donor advised
funds to enhance their community giving efforts.
At Ahaus Tool and Engineering, giving back
to the community is part of doing business.
Ahaus Tool and Engineering has been an integral part of the community for nearly 65 years. For
fourth-generation owner Kevin Ahaus, being part of the community means giving back.
“Our goal is to make this a better place to live and work. Our employees live and earn a living here and
giving through the Foundation helps us spread our charitable dollars throughout the community in an
efficient way.”
Actively Involved
Recently, the leadership at Ahaus considered establishing their own foundation but quickly discovered
that incorporating as a private foundation would be costly and unnecessary.
“We chose to give through the
Wayne County Foundation because
they have been around, helping
this community for over 30 years,”
Kevin said. “They have a proven
track record with investing and
distributing funds and their staff
has the knowledge to properly
receipt gifts and file all the
necessary paperwork to assure we
get appropriate tax deductions for
those gifts. When we considered
all the facts, it just made sense to
use this resource that was already
in place rather than creating a
private foundation for which we
would have to provide oversight,”
he added. “Having a donor directed
fund really appealed to us. We can
contribute to our donor advised
fund when money is available and
distribute those gifts to our chosen
charities when it’s time. That was an
important component of choosing
the Wayne County Foundation.”

Not pictured: Ryan
VanMiddlesworth.
When Ray Ontko and his partners at Doxpop
think about charity, they think about community.
“Doxpop is part of the Richmond Wayne
County community. Our staff members are
actively involved in various organizations and
we looked for a way to support their efforts
and those of the local nonprofits,” Ray said.
“As members of the corporation, we wanted to
have an ongoing commitment to support the
community in which we have our business. We
felt the Wayne County Foundation was the best
way to do that.”
Corporately, Doxpop has committed to
giving 5% of their profit each year to
their corporate donor advised fund at the
Foundation. Distributions from the fund can
be issued in three different ways: as a match to
contributions made by Doxpop employees, in
support of their employees’ volunteer work, or
on a decision of the partners.
Under this new corporate giving plan, up to
$1,000 per employee will be matched to a
qualified charity on a one-to-one basis. Service
recognition gifts - $1,000 for membership
on a local non-profit board and $2,000 in
recognition of service as an officer on a nonprofit board – are also available. Employees
can request these gifts each year.
“We feel this is a good way to recognize local
participation in much-needed services,” Ray
added. “We also like the fact that we receive a
tax benefit at the time we make contributions
into the fund. Then, we can make decisions
later about our charitable contributions.”

Building Capacit
y
The 2012 Challenge Match Initiative marked the first major change in
the Foundation’s grantmaking function since the introduction of the
Impact Grant in 2001. The program generated just over $390,000 in gifts
from the community to 26 participating organizations. This amount was
matched with $150,000 from the Foundation, based on the community’s
response to each organization and with respect to certain criteria. The
result: a new tool to help organizations relate to their donors and a total
community investment of just under $540,300.
Quaker Hill
Nestled on a quiet hill in north Richmond, Quaker Hill Conference Center
provides a tranquil atmosphere for conferences and overnight stays. The
off-the-beaten-track retreat setting allows people to meet in a serene and
relaxing setting. Annually 3,000 - 4,000 people take advantage of this
peaceful setting for conferences and meetings.
Matching Grants
Quaker Hill participated in the Challenge Match in 2012. In addition to
raising money, the campaign helped them raise their awareness of potential
new donors who valued the organization and their mission. “This whole process really opened our eyes to missed
opportunities and chances to share our story with a wider audience,” Rod Waltz, Center Director, added.
One such opportunity came when a gentleman who had stayed at Quaker Hill during his youth stopped in. He shared with them that while his father recuperated at the hospital following an accident during a family trip, the rest of the family stayed at Quaker Hill. Though he now lives in Tulsa, he and his siblings still hold fond memories of the retreat center and the help his family received during a difficult time. The Challenge Match gave Rod the opportunity to build on the relationship in a new way and turn fond feelings into a tangible gift.
Cardinal Greenway
For the Cardinal Greenway, the Challenge Match offered a
rare chance to raise operating dollars.
“We’re a small organization with a small budget and to be
able to raise over $26,000 for overhead and management
expenses was huge for us,” Director Denise Retz said.
“People don’t often realize that grant money rarely is
available for operating expenses,” she added. “The
Challenge Match helped the steering committee think
outside the box and reach out to potential new donors for our cause. We were able to grow our donor base and
to strengthen relationships with donors who had previously given. Donors love it when their gift is matched by
someone else. A matching program can be the catalyst that causes people to give that first gift.”
“I found that people are generous but that extra incentive of their gift being matched can help push some over
the threshold from potential donor to donor,” she concluded.

Model T Museum
When the Model T Museum moved to the historic Depot
District in Richmond, they faced a number of hurdles that
were eventually overcome with the help and cooperation
of the community. One hurdle that remained – finding
money for some additional building and marketing
needs – was overcome with the help of the 2012
Challenge Match.
“The one thing that really surprised us was the amount
of support we got from non-members here in our
community. We anticipated our members and chapters
would support our efforts but this added ‘vote of
confidence’ was a real boost,” said Barbara Klehfoth,
Business Manager of the Model T Ford Club of America.
“The process was so valuable to us as it taught our
volunteers and leadership how to approach people
about supporting our organization. It was a humbling
and gratifying experience.”
In addition to the local support, the Museum also
received donations from 28 states, Canada and Germany.
“This grant not only encouraged local giving but also
brought money into our community from other states
and countries. The 100th Anniversary Centennial helped
acquaint people with Richmond and when they heard
about this opportunity to have their gift matched, they
wanted to help,” added Jay Klehfoth, CEO of the Model T
Ford Club of America. “One of the most valuable things
this grant enabled us to do was to install a security
system at the Museum. When you have a collection this
valuable, with many items on loan, you need a way to
protect it.”

Lynn (Hamilton) Bode, a 2002 graduate of Centerville
Senior High School, attended Purdue University on a
Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Additional
support from the Wayne County Foundation, 4-H,
school, and local businesses allowed Lynn to
concentrate on her studies and research. After
graduating from Purdue, Lynn attended Indiana
University School of Dentistry to earn her Doctor of
Dental Surgery degree and Temple University to earn
her Master of Science and Certificate in Orthodontics.
This past December, after ten years of school, Lynn
returned to Wayne County to open her own practice,
Richmond Orthodontic Specialists. She is excited to
join the community that helped her succeed.
“When I was in sixth grade, I told my parents that I wanted to be an orthodontist and that I would pay for college
myself. Receiving the Lilly Scholarship allowed me to hold true to both of my promises. This scholarship and
the support of my community played an important role in allowing me to achieve my dreams.”

Tyler Hoodlebrink is the son of
Jim and Brenda Hoodlebrink. While
attending Hagerstown High School,
Tyler maintained a 3.9 GPA and
participated in football, 4-H, National
Honor Society, track, and model
legislature. He was co-captain of the
football team and volunteered for the
Hagerstown Public Library and the
after-school tutoring program. Tyler is
majoring in mechanical engineering at
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Hunter Lambright received a Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in the
spring of 2009 and later that fall, attended Ball State, majoring in psychology.
“The Lilly scholarship meant not having to worry about finances. It let me put
the effort I needed into my undergraduate schoolwork so that I could pursue
further educational opportunities later on. This scholarship set me up so that
I would be able to go to graduate school right after my undergraduate career
instead of taking a year off to save up like so many of my peers.
I’m grateful that I will be able to get my Master of the Arts degree in teaching
at Earlham College now instead of delaying it thanks to the Lilly Endowment
and this amazing opportunity.”

Faced with a depressed economy and budget
challenges, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra
made a surprising decision: cut ticket prices. The
move – and subsequent marketing campaign resulted in an increase in the number of patrons
purchasing annual tickets and encouraged a
younger audience to participate.
“
The results of our marketing
campaign - increased attendance
and the presence of rapt young
faces in the audience - have inspired
our orchestra. The music for the
last two seasons has been over
the top,” said Connie Wooldridge,
Richmond Symphony Orchestra
Board President.
”
Evelien Woolard, personnel manager and principal flute
for the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, shows third
graders her flute and explains how she plays it during
an educational workshop supported by a Wayne County
Foundation grant.
The organization also strengthened their future by using a portion of a bequest received from the estate
of Marlowe and Pat Kluter to build their endowment at the Foundation. With current assets of more
than $875,000, the board has not only strengthened their annual budget but has also created a future
stream of funding, ensuring the long-term viability of the Symphony.

The Legacy Society is comprised of the many caring
individuals who have made formal plans in their will
or estate plan to benefit the community through a
gift to the Foundation.

Legacy Society
Tammy and David Williamson are passionate about farming. They
earn their living off the land and enjoy being outdoors and watching
crops grow. They also enjoy helping others and in 2011 established
an Acorn Fund at the Foundation as part of their overall charitable
giving strategy.
They added to their fledgling fund and over time it grew to $5,000, thanks in part to a gift of grain which they
forwarded directly from the elevator to their fund. Now that the fund is endowed, Tammy and David can add
to it to continue the growth and use their new donor advised fund to share their gifts with other nonprofit
organizations associated with agriculture.

Ways t
o Give
There are many ways to support the important
work of the Foundation or your favorite local
charity. Each offers unique opportunities, one of
which is bound to be just right for your personal
circumstances.
Please contact the Foundation to learn more.
Bequests
One of the most popular and simplest ways to give - a bequest - allows you to create a legacy without taking cash out of your pocket during your lifetime. If you are considering a bequest, let us explain the many options you have and how we will make sure your gift is used as intended.
Beneficiary Designations
You can also name the Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy. Doing so is generally a simple process that can be easily modified at any time to meet your changing needs. Moreover, using
retirement assets to fund your charitable interests is often a tax-wise strategy.
Charitable Gift Annuities
Charitable Gift Annuities allow you to make a donation and receive income for life. They offer a competitive rate of return and qualify the donor for a current income tax deduction. Gift Annuities are often a good option for charitably-minded older adults.
Donor Advised Funds
A donor advised fund is perfect for the donor who wants to stay involved with how their gift is used. It’s a great way to help teach children or grandchildren about responsible philanthropy, too.
Endowments
If you’d like to create a lasting legacy, consider a named, endowed fund. Establishing an endowed fund offers ongoing support for the charity of your choice and provides you with valuable tax benefits. Endowed funds may also be created in honor or memory of a loved one or friend to assure they are remembered forever.
Anonymously
Perhaps you’re a very private person who wants to support our community but doesn’t want everyone else to know. Gifts made anonymously to the Foundation assure your privacy, as well as your charitable intent.

Giving and Receiving
Maxine Matthews always lived frugally. Taught at
an early age to spend less than she made and to
save every week, she and her brother, Charlie, spent
carefully and invested wisely.
In 2004, Maxine used appreciated stock to establish a
Charitable Gift Annuity in the amount of $200,000. In
2006, she established another annuity with an initial
gift of over $79,700. Until her death in 2012 at age 93,
these funds provided Maxine with a steady income.
That income and the amount she left to charity
totaled more than $330,000. The charitable remainder
was used to establish funds that will benefit her
favorite charitable interests for many years to come.

The Wayne County Foundation’s Women’s Leadership Conference
celebrated five years of success in 2012. Begun as a professional
development opportunity for women, the annual conference has
become a signature training event to encourage learning and
collaboration among women in the Whitewater Valley. Giving
back to the community is an important aspect, too. In 2012,
participants created the Women with Purpose Endowment Fund
to support events and activities that will allow women to network
and learn together.
“
Women are a powerful force,” said Darla
Randall, Foundation board member
and Women’s Conference committee
member. “This is true in many regards,
including philanthropy. The Wayne
County Foundation’s Women’s Leadership
Conference has been a tool for women
to use to educate themselves, to become
aware of opportunities, and now to unite
together in making a difference in our
community. I am proud to have been a part
of this endeavor from the beginning. It’s
so much more than a ‘conference.’ This is a
gathering of women determined to develop
as individuals and also to connect in such a
way that the lives of others are generously
affected. The Women With Purpose
Endowment was a logical next step in the
evolution of this exciting annual event!

Year in Review
T
he stories, activities, and reports on the preceding pages all serve to interpret the work of the Foundation in our Wayne County community. They speak to the generosity of generations of donors and to the great good that can come from relatively small, but strategic investments.
Additionally, we measure the Foundation’s progress by a series of metrics that quantify our
fundamental operational aspects. They give us another way to gauge our progress and assess
our effectiveness. For 2012, they indicate another very good year, though less robust than 2011,
which was characterized by a number of “outsized” and “one of a kind” events.
Year in Review
The Foundation recorded slightly more than $1 million in new gifts and pledges in 2012, and established 23 new funds. Notably, this total included a new charitable remainder annuity trust,
the McClaren scholarship fund, and three new funds associated with the dissolution of the local
Easter Seals Chapter. Unlike other recent years, however, we received no major bequests.
We awarded a little more than $1 million worth of grants and scholarships. As in other years, education continues to be our largest single program category. Last year, this included $343,300 worth of scholarship awards. Perhaps more significantly, 2012 will be remembered
for the Challenge Match Initiative – the first major change in the Foundation’s grantmaking function since the introduction of the Impact Grant in 2001.
The Foundation’s investments followed the broader markets throughout the year to post a 10.6% increase and, once again, outperform
our policy index benchmark. We recognized $32.4 million of total assets under management as
of December 31 – or about a $2.3 million increase
on the year.
Your Wayne County Foundation celebrated another
year of recording more administrative income than
operating expense. It remains fiscally very strong
and well-positioned to serve our community for
many years to come.

2012 Investment Results
Investment returns for the Foundation’s
total return pool were up 10.6% for the
year ending December 31, 2012, and
slightly above the portfolio’s policy
index benchmark for the same period.
Importantly, the portfolio continues to
generate long-term returns with less
risk than the policy index, due to an
asset allocation policy that hedges the
volatility of the equity markets with a
range of fixed income and alternative
investment strategies.
