Dear Parents and Guardians
Thank you to everyone for your good wishes regarding my success in achieving the principal position! The
appointment is provisional until June 15. I am very excited and looking forward to the challenge of working with the
teachers and parents of the Donburn community to provide the best possible education for all the students.
Next term I plan to have regular year level parent morning teas at drop off time on Monday mornings, starting with
the Foundation parents on July 18. This will be an opportunity for parents to socialise with each other and we can
discuss ideas for improving learning opportunities for our students.
The eSmart student committee has met twice in the past fortnight. I have been privileged to participate in the
meetings and have been impressed with the students’ enthusiasm and ideas for making the cyber experiences safer
for all students. The group are working on a Student User Agreement and also creating posters with cyber safety
messages to be displayed around the school. Thank you to Robyn Fraser and Emma Hopkins the facilitators of this
committee.
Thank you to Jen Hanrahan (Zac Year 4 and Allie Year 2) for arranging for Warrick Giddey from Melbourne United
Basketball Club to run clinics for the Year 1 & 2 students. They thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity as you will see
with the reports in this newsletter.
We have had so much positive feedback from the local kindergartens about our Kid Crazy team! Thank you to Grant
for preparing the show and rehearsing the students and also taking them to the performances. A big thank you to
Nicole Minster (Hayley Year 6 & Xavier Year 2) and Amanda Clark (Tallulah Year 6) for transporting the team to
performances and a big thank you to all the Year 6 Kid Crazy Team for their hard work and dedication. What
wonderful ambassadors for Donburn!
Congratulations to the students who participated in the regional cross country yesterday. Anna Papamichael has a
report outlining the students’ results.
Kind regards
Julie

FOUNDATION ZOO EXCURSION
On Tuesday May 24th the Foundation students participated in a
fantastic excursion to the Melbourne Zoo.
The children enjoyed learning about a range of animals in the
incredible ‘Wildlife Explorers’ garden and Zoo School classrooms.
They were given the opportunity to pat a reptile.
The highlight for many was visiting the butterfly house, seeing the
elephants and walking through the reptile enclosure.
Thank you to all the parents who assisted on the day.
MELBOURNE UNITED BASKETBALL CLINIC
th
On Thursday 26 May, Melbourne United Basketball Club came to Donburn to
run basketball clinics for the grade 1’s and 2’s.
Warrick “Wazza” Giddey was fantastic! He gave the kids some great tips on
ball handling, hand-eye coordination and shooting techniques. He used great
analogies so the children could easily understand why and how to protect the
ball, follow through with their shots and to use all the power from your whole
body, not just your arms. It was a great way to spend a very cold and rainy
morning! It was wonderful to see all the teachers and teacher’s aides getting
involved too!
Many thanks to Anna Papamichael, who gave up her indoor area for the
morning and organised the group times.
We had a great day at the basketball clinic.
I liked it when we got into teams and had to
race to shoot the most goals. I also liked sitting
on Mrs Pepper’s shoulders for the photo, so I
was taller than Wazza. Allie H 2P
The clinic was so much fun, I loved it when we
had to roll the ball between our legs and
behind our backs. Josh D 1O
I really enjoyed the basketball clinic and had
lots of fun learning new skills and drills. I would
like to thank Warrick for teaching us fun drills.
THANK YOU WAZZA! Chloe F 2S
The clinic was good fun. I
enjoyed learning some
skills and some new tricks!
Charlie Dan 2P
I had the most AWESOME day with Wazza.
We learnt how to dribble between our legs and
much more. I loved the basketball clinic and
hope that we can do it again soon. Laura 2S
The basketball clinic was
fun, I liked when we had to
run in and shoot.
Charlie Dam 2P
Wozza from Melbourne United Basketball Club
gave Year 1 and 2 an exciting basketball clinic
Year 1D really enjoyed having
Warrick (also known as `Wozza’) from
Melbourne United Basketball Club visit
Donburn. He was really tall.
Wozza jumped up and tapped out a
basketball that was stuck on the ring.
He showed us how to jump up when
shooting a goal. Wozza was amazing
at shooting goals! We bounced the ball
through our legs. He taught us to
defend with your feet apart so you do
not lose your balance. Wozza also
taught us to cover the ball with your
body so the other team cannot get it
easily.
We had fun dribbling the ball across
the court and around our bodies. It
looked easy but we need a lot of
practice. Everyone concentrated and
tried their best. We all felt very happy
learning basketball skills!
Year 1O and 1T loved the chance to do fun activities together at the
basketball clinic on Thursday, 26th May. We learnt how to shoot goals from the
3 point line. We enjoyed passing the ball through our legs. We practised
putting the ball around our neck and learnt how to pass the ball from one hand
to the other as well as moving it between our hands and moving around our
hips and legs.
It was so exciting when we learnt how to run back and forth while we were
dribbling the ball. We liked being able to shoot the basketball in the goals. It
was fun when we dribbled the ball between our partners and in relay races. It
was an amazing experience. Thank you to Warrick from Melbourne United for
coming out and sharing your skills and time with us. It was fantastic!
Year 1 and 2 Basketball Clinic by Melbourne United Basketball Club
Allie’s mum suggested a basketball clinic for all the Year 1 and 2 children.
Wozza from Melbourne United came and taught us some basketball skills. He
taught us how to dribble the ball and do a figure 8 with the ball between our
legs. At the end we got to have a go at shooting a goal. Some of us were really
good. Other people, including Mrs. Pepper, couldn’t shoot a goal. We all
enjoyed the basketball clinic. 2P
The basketball clinic was amazing because we got to shoot, dribble and learn
different skills. We loved meeting Wozza who used to be a famous basketball
player. He was really tall. After the clinic we tried to guess his height. Some
people thought he was 2.5 metres, others thought he was 2 metres tall. He
was definitely a lot taller than Ms Walker, Sylvia and everyone in our class!
We tried really hard at doing lay-ups, shooting and trying to move the ball
around our backs. The basketball clinic was fantastic and we would really like
to do it again. Thank you, Wozza, for visiting Donburn. 2W
2S loved being part of the Basketball clinic! We had so much fun and
learnt lots of cool new skills including shooting for hoops. Wozza was so tall
and he was a lot of fun and made us laugh.
We think more people should play basketball as it is great exercise and you
can have a lot of fun at the same time. A big thanks to the organisers for letting
us be part of a special clinic. The posters we got were awesome too!

Our Junior eSmart Committee have met twice. It has been fantastic working
with our enthusiastic group. The group have already discussed and made
insightful suggestions for our ‘Student User Agreement,’ and are now actively
involved in creating some poster to convey message about cyber safety and
keeping our students safe on the internet. Stay tuned for the next newsletter
and watch this space for our very first ‘eSmart Kids Cyber-Safety Corner’
article.
Sincerely, Robyn Fraser
The Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner has developed a website
which provides valuable information for parents and children about staying
safe and being responsible when they are online.
The Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner hopes to encourage
behavioural change - where Australian children and young people act
responsibly online – just as they would offline. Their goal is to create an
environment in which cyberbullying is truly unacceptable. To achieve this, they
hope to both educate and help prevent harmful online behaviour from
occurring in the first place.
Go to the following link to see the wonderful resources available on the
‘iParent’ section of the website - https://esafety.gov.au/education-resources/
iparent. The iParent portal provides information for parents who wish to keep
on top of their children’s technology use. While children might seem to be tech
savvy, they still need a parent’s guiding hand to help make sure their online
experience is positive and safe.
Kid’s Cyber– Safety Corner
This is Jaimee and Tallulah from the Junior eSmart Committee. There are 16
members from Year 4 to Year 6 in this new eSmart Junior Committee
including: Adriel A, Ewan H, Amelie S, Will H, Lauren W, Angie I, Erica V,
Jemma C, Annie L, Erfan S, Heidi M, Nicolas D, Jordan B, Tallulah C, Luke L
and Jaimee Mc.
Welcome to the Kids Corner for Cyber Safety. In the ‘Kids Cyber Safety
Corner we will be giving tips and tricks on what to do and what not to do on
the internet. And remember always stay safe on the internet.

A DAY AT THE CANTEEN
I arrive at 11am to a lovely morning greeting by Vitina. Lunch tubs stacked up
all around canteen ready to be completed. 'What do you want me to do?", I
ask. "Will you please start going through the orders and putting in the chips/
popcorn etc and complete the drink orders?", Vitina asks. "Sure thing" I reply.
So I grab all the boxes of lollies, chips, popcorn and the drink order sheets to
write down who wants what drinks and begin placing everything in each tub.
Vitina ticking off who has ordered what for lunch so we can start preparing the
meat pies, sausage rolls, dim sims, sandwiches and wraps. Casual
conversation while we do these simple tasks.
After a while mum number two arrives and she joins me filling in the orders in
the tubs.
"Do you want me to do the drinks now?" I ask. "That would be great" Vitina
replies. So I head over to the other end of kitchen to start putting the drinks into
bags and into the fridge to be placed in the tubs just before they go out. "Would
you like a coffee ladies?" "Sure", we reply.
Once drinks are done I start cutting up the hot dog rolls and placing them in a
box lined with material. 66 buns later and the sausages are ready to go on.
Vitina has already put all the pizzas, pies, sausage rolls, chicken nuggets and
chicken pieces in the oven. She has written all the orders on the bags for the
wraps and sandwiches.
All we need to do is pick up the bag and follow the instructions.
Around 12:30 more mum's start turning up to help with the lunch rush. One
mum is making sandwiches, another is making wraps, another is counting
money and another is writing the numbers on the bags of how many chicken
nuggets, party pies are required for each order. So if a child orders 3 nuggets,
3 is written on the bag. Vitina takes our lunch orders. "I'll have a salad
sandwich." "I'll have a chicken wrap." "I'll have a meat pie." All our lunch orders
are looked after.
Nuggets and chicken pieces are turned over, sausages are checked to make
sure water is boiling, wraps are being made according to their instructions.
There is a buzz in the kitchen as everyone goes about their jobs. Chatting
about what is going on in our lives, funny stories about our children, making
jokes. Some of the newer mums asking questions. "Where do I find the paper
for the sandwiches?" "Where are the tongs?" "Do you have another
breadboard?" Someone nearby answering these questions and helping them
out. If we are not sure, we call out to Vitina. Somehow she manages to know
what is going on, what needs to happen next and answer questions all at the
same time.
One mum starts filling in the bags for the pies and the chicken nuggets
according to the numbers that are written on them. So a bag with 3 gets 3
nuggets, etc.
Getting closer to 1pm and I ask if it is time for me to start getting the hot dogs
ready. "Yes please!" Vitina replies. So I grab a bun, place a sausage inside,
grab a paper bag and put it in, then place it on the bench behind me. This is a
nice easy repetitive job I like.
Other mums grab tubs and start filling out the orders. This is another of my
favourite jobs. I normally grab a tub, empty all the lunch bags next to me, pick
one up and then grab what is on there. "Pizza Hawaiian" I read. Head over to
the bench where the pizzas are stacked up and put it in the bag. Check nothing
else required, put it in the tub, grab next lunch bag. "3 Party Pies" grab the
party pies with the number 3 on it and put it in the bag. Once I have filled all the
orders, I grab the drinks, place the tub outside canteen and get the next one.
A DAY AT THE CANTEEN
Soon the rush is over, all the tubs are out and we have a few minutes to
have some lunch while we start getting ready for the rush of children buying
something from the window.
Some mums like to clean up and wash dishes, others like to talk to the
children and get their orders. After a while I hear "Adi -there is someone
here to see you." I turn around, there is child number 1. "Hi mum!" "Hi
honey, what would you like?" I take my kid’s order and see her run off to
play with her friends. Not long after child number 2 arrives. Other mum's
have visitors too.
By the time the bell goes the kitchen has been cleaned up, money counted
and we are ready to go and put our feet up. Another busy, successful day at
canteen. "Big thank you ladies, great work today," Vitina says to everyone.
Kind Regards,
Adi
M: 0416-127-211
Thank you to Adi for her enjoyable
piece “A Day In Canteen”. I hope
you found it helpful and it dispelled
any fears you may have of what
really happens in canteen. It shows
that it really is a team effort and for
everything to run smoothly it takes a
team of people. Everyone has a job
to do and jobs are given on people’s
strengths. No one is expected to do
anything
that
they
are
not
comfortable doing.
Many friendships have been made
as parents who would not normally
cross paths as their children are in
different grades are able to meet
new parents. It really is a lot of fun and a great place to socialize and network,
but most importantly your children benefit from seeing you at their school and
being part of the school. It really is a powerful and positive message.
Currently we are in need of helpers for Fridays. Please consider joining the
canteen team, your help is desperately needed! It is only once a month and
can be for 2, 3, 4, or 5 hours. Please note that you are not required weekly but
ONCE A MONTH.
If you want to come and check things out before you commit you are more
than welcome to come and spend time during a shift. Maybe you can bring a
friend and you could be rostered on together. If you are not ready to commit
monthly you may prefer leaving your name on my Emergency List which I tap
into on the occasions when I have been short of people for a shift. If you have
any questions I can be found in canteen on Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays. Alternatively you can contact me on my mobile on 0434 140 739.
For canteen to continue running we need volunteers, it’s as simple as that.
Thank you
Vitina Bakker
