Welcome to Stanly County, N C...
Slip away, create your own pace.
Looking for a place to slip away and enjoy a pace of life with a rhythm of your own
choosing? Look no further. Within easy driving distance of Charlotte and in close
proximity to the state’s metropolitan areas, Stanly County is an oasis of calm.
Nestled in the rolling hills of North Carolina’s Piedmont, untouched by urban sprawl,
Stanly County is a land of rural beauty. Scenic byways wind through leafy lanes, beside
lush fields and along the banks of serene lakes and gently flowing streams. In the
northeast corner of the county, the ancient Uwharrie Mountains rise above the
Yadkin/Pee Dee River and enclose the beauty of Morrow Mountain State Park.
Want to stay awhile? Bed and Breakfast and country inn facilities provide
accommodation along with vacation rentals, hotels, motels and campgrounds.
Energy to spare? Recreational facilities include cycling, kayaking, gold mining and golf.
For a change of pace follow the Wine Trail and discover Stanly County’s many award
winning wineries.
Ready for a touch of civilization? Small friendly communities scattered among the
county’s farms and forests offer a variety of cultural amenities that include antique
shops, art galleries, museums, a variety of dining experiences, and the unique
entertainment of an old-fashioned drive-in theater and a small town cruise-in and
burn-out.
Come and explore Stanly County and see for yourself, and when we bid you goodbye
we know that you will come back….again and again.

On the eastern border of the county, Lake Tillery
covers over 5,000 acres. At its northern end the lake
is bordered by Morrow Mountain State Park and the
Uwharrie National Forest. It is here that the tranquil
Uwharrie River enters the main stream and the Yadkin
River changes its name to Pee Dee. Boating, fishing and
water sports are popular with visitors from far and wide.
The friendly town of Norwood is the Gateway to Lake
Tillery and each spring nearby Fork Farm’s Horse Trials
and Outdoor Heritage Days draw spectators from all
over to watch Olympic caliber riders put their mounts
through their paces.

Let the Adventure Begin
F
or the ultimate adventure, take a ‘night of the
full moon’ guided kayak tour through dreamlike stretches of the Pee Dee River. Later,
laze by your own campfire on the slopes of
Morrow Mountain. In the morning, bait a line and
compete with ospreys and bald eagles for that big one.
Then ramp up the pace and water ski on Lake Tillery
or Badin Lake, bicycle along a Scenic Byway or hike a
trail through the serene forests of Morrow Mountain.
For the outdoor adventurer, Morrow Mountain State
Park is Stanly County’s jewel in the crown. Rising to
a height of 936 feet (not strictly a mountain), the peak
offers stunning views of the Piedmont. The park attracts
400,000 visitors a year from all over the southeastern
United States and its 4,742 acres accommodate them
with ease. Here one can choose from a long list of adventures, from camping in one of the 106 campsites or
6 rustic vacation cabins, to hiking miles of well-maintained trails. A large swimming pool offers a cool break
8
Stanly County Travel Guide
on a hot day. And don’t miss a visit to the Dr. Francis
Kron homestead. One of the first medical doctors to
settle in the Piedmont, his office, infirmary and greenhouse appear much as they did in the 1870’s. At the boat
landing you can put in your own craft or rent a canoe or
rowboat to explore the Yadkin/Pee Dee River.
Dams on this river have created large lakes that provide
endless recreational possibilities. In the northeast corner
of the county, Badin Lake’s waters cover 5,350 acres and
its 115 mile shoreline encompasses the upscale Uwharrie
Point community in the north and the quaint village of
Badin in the south. With swimming areas, boat landings, picnic areas, and an abundance of wildlife, the lake
is an ideal place for the outdoor enthusiastic.
And last but not least, surely no county of comparable
size and population boasts more parks that Stanly
County. There are 23 listed here (count ‘em), ranging
from Morrow Mountain State Park to Stanfield’s Pike
family barn and rest-area-with-facilities-to-come. These
parks boast everything from soccer fields and bocce
courts to fishing ponds and canoe rentals, and there’s
even a brand new disc golf course. And did we mention
the area’s 5 golf courses?

With our mild climate and abundant sunshine,
Stanly County offers something for everyone from
vigorous exercise to idling away the hours on a
grassy slope beside a gentle stream. Come and enjoy
our great outdoors. Take a deep breath of fresh air,
feel your cares and worries slip away, and let the
adventure begin.
Lakes
Badin Lake
Tucked among tall pines and stately oaks in the heart
of the Uwharrie Mountains in northeastern Stanly
County, the picturesque town of Badin serves as a
unique gateway for North Carolina’s central park.
Settled by French employees of the L’ Aluminum Françias in the early twentieth century, Badin continues to
exude the charm of a French Provincial village, reminiscent of its founders homeland.
The town, listed on the National Register of Historic
Places, is accessible by several main routes, but may be
pleasantly approached by the Pee Dee Valley Scenic
Byway that snakes around Morrow Mountain State
Park and through rolling hills of rural farmland.
Badin’s tree lined lanes lead to a variety of recreational
activities and interesting sites, including boating,
golfing, swimming, fine dining, and museums. Outdoor
enthusiasts will appreciate the wide array and abundance of wildlife, as well as pristine forests and winding
hiking trails.
Lake facts:
The reservoir covers an area of 5,350 acres, has 115
miles of shoreline, a maximum depth of 200 feet. Water

Lake Tillery
Enjoy a day in a friendly environment. The
Gateway to Lake Tillery is located in Norwood, NC.
The town is a reminder of how the American culture
used to be, friendly people, quaint shops, and the small
town charm that everyone needs to experience at least
once.
Let your mind wonder while enjoying a relaxing cruise
up and down Lake Tillery. Be sure to stop at one of the
marinas and enjoy socializing with everyone who is out
and about. You’ll notice that everyone is friendly as you
sail by resident’s homes that blend into the beautiful
landscape that was here waiting on us. Sail down to the
mouth of the Uwharrie River and enjoy hanging out
on the sandbar which is in front of Morrow Mountain
State Park. Drop your line and try for that illusive “big
one.” Enjoy the abundance of water sports happening
all over the lake. You can find all of this and more at
Lake Tillery.
Lake Facts:
Lake Tillery is more than 5,000 acres with 104 miles
of shoreline. A maximum depth of 70 feet and water
fluctuations are minor.
On the eastern border of the
county, Lake Tillery covers over
5,000 acres.

Viticulture is the Name, Winemaking is the Game
I
n Stanly County, a new way of farming has been
added to cows, corn and cotton. Viticulture and
winemaking is the name of the game as a new
breed of farmers have found the fertile soil and
mild climate perfect for vineyards that range in size
from small patches to dozens of acres.
“I call it extreme farming,” says Chad Andrews of
Uwharrie Vineyards, who with partner David Braswell opened his 84-acre farm in 2005. “Winemaking
is a romantic notion, but it’s very hard work.” But for
Andrews it is a dream come true and he’ll gladly help
the visitor choose a wine, or make up a basket, or give a
grand tour of his winemaking operation.
Uwharrie Vineyards has a visitor complex with a wine
tasting bar, a gift shop, a tank room and a state-ofthe-art meeting facility. It also has certification as an
Audubon sanctuary and is host to wild turkeys, herds of
deer and flocks of bluebirds.
A few miles to the east, bluebirds flock around the
boxes set out by vintner Ken Furr on the porch of Stony
Mountain Vineyards. Sitting high above rows of vines
that march down a rocky hillside, the porch has one of
the most spectacular views in the county. Below it the
Pee Dee River meanders through a lush valley as the
hazy blue Uwharrie Mountains rise beyond.
Furr and his wife Marie opened their business in 1996
on 62 acres near Morrow Mountain State Park. Wines
range from Chardonnay to Riesling and from Syrah to
Merlot and include home-grown fruit wines, a delicious
addition to any dessert. “We’re a small family
operation,” says Furr. “We’re a boutique winery like
many in Europe.”
Across the county, another family winery produces
wines from the native Muscadine grape. Starting with
200 vines in 1997, the Dennis family began selling their
wine in 1998 and promptly sold out. “It was
word-of-mouth,” says Sandon Dennis, whose family
has farmed this land for generations. Today, sales are
through wine festivals, regional shows, and a thriving
mail order business as well as on site. The winery
includes a spacious events building and a gift shop.
Yet another thriving family winery can be found on
the western edge of the county. Begun in 2003, Rocky
River Vineyards is owned by David Elliot, his wife
Dwan and mother Sara. Other family members work
in the business that offers a variety of wines and is
a popular venue for weddings and banquets. And
although technology has produced an efficient grapepressing method, fans can come out at harvest time to
take part in an old-fashioned grape stomping.

Stanly County Travel Guide
Outside Stanly County, but definitely a not-to-be-missed part of the wine trail, Old Stone Winery has been
hand-crafting award winning wines since 2002. Located just outside Salisbury and less than one hour from
Charlotte, the winery features a gift shop, tasting bar, and tank room. Recently purchased by Darin and Naomi
Griffin, the 130-acre estate currently has 20 acres of Muscadine grapes and is an exclusive source of European
vinifera grapes.
From rolling hills, to creek sides, to steep Uwharrie Mountain hillsides, the area’s wines are as varied as the terrain
from which they grow. Come and taste for yourself the product of Stanly County’s newest
way of farming.

Badin Road Drive-In is one of only 9 remaining
drive-in theaters in North Carolina.
Drive-in, Cruise-in and Burn-out
Stanly County’s Unique Entertainment
O
n the fourth Friday of each month the
little town of Oakboro roars to life. Cars
start arriving at 3 pm and the Big Event
starts at 5 pm. What’s going on? Only the
largest car club Cruise-in in the state, with over 400
classic and unique cars and over 5,000 spectators. At 9
pm this is followed by the sheer unexplainable fascination of the Burn-out wherein cars with locked brakes
spin their tires until they quite literally burn. As they
say, it takes all sorts and they can be found by the thousands in Oakboro on these fourth Fridays.
About 4 years ago, Oakboro native Jerry Crayton’s idea
for a cruise-in surpassed all expectations when, together
with the Greater Oakboro Business Association, the
idea became a reality. The event is now the largest in
North Carolina. But then Oakboro, with one stop light
and a population 1,199, is a can-do town.
Historically, it was a textile community, but when the
local Stanly Knitting Mills closed in 1990, downtown
26
Stanly County Travel Guide
dried up. Local investors bought the old buildings, fixed
them up and revitalized the town’s heart. Today, nearly
240,000 people annually come to Oakboro for its museums, parks, events like the Cruise-in and Burn-out,
bluegrass music, antiques and a specialty shop where
one can learn to fly remote planes.
The Cruise-in not only features bumper to bumper
classic Mustangs, Camaros and you-name-it, but lots
more shiny, pretty old cars with sleek lines. And there’s
more. There is musical entertainment. There are food
vendors, souvenirs, door prizes and fun photo opportunities.
If you wander over to the Burn-out, be sure to stay behind the line to avoid that burning rubber. And when a
tire pops, join in the hootin’ and hollering and clapping!
It’s all part of the fun.
Still hungry for some unique entertainment? In the
county seat of Albemarle there is an historic gem that
draws visitors from miles around: Badin Road Drivein Theater. One of the last remaining drive-in theaters
in the state, it now offers two screens for one ticket so
you’d better arrive early. The crowds grow nightly. Shows
start at sundown, with triple features, intermissions and
games. Newly released films are shown year round on
two screens.
North Carolina was once one of the top 10 drive-in venues in the country with more than 200 outdoor cinemas
operating. Since the peak years of the late 1950’s the
number of functioning drive-ins has declined 96%. Presently 9 remain in operation.
Originally built in 1948, Badin Road Drive-in Theater’s venerable solo screen had gone dark, but then was
repaired, revived and re-opened in 1994 with a capacity
for nearly 700 cars.
Today the site features Wi-Fi access, FM stereo audio,
and a playground for children. With tickets at $5 for
adults, $2 for children 6 to 11, and children under 6 free,
this is one of the most affordable and unique family
nights out you’ll find anywhere.

Museums
Stanly County is a crossroads of history.  Its people have helped
mold and define the cultural landscape of the county, the state,
and the nation for more than 10,000 years. Our citizens value
their history and have diligently worked together to establish
repositories to safeguard the artifacts of their heritage. With
so many different cultures and catalysts creating history in this
“land between the rivers,” each of Stanly County’s museums is
unique—from examples of Native American art and pottery
in Morrow Mountain State Park to the town of Badin, where
French workers modeled their new community after their own
provincial villages in France. So, make sure to pause in this
crossroads of history and discover the rich heritage that is Stanly
County, North Carolina.
