When Your Son Is Murdered
58th Street Market
Closing
After almost a decade of serving the community, the
Fresh Grocer Market in the Cobbs Creek Shopping Mall
near 58th and Baltimore Avenue, is closing its doors
forever.
Saturday, April 10, is its last day.
The manager said the market was closing because it
was losing money .
Negotiations to bring a Save -A-Lot market, a discount chain supermarket, is pending. If the deal is made,
a source said a new tenant will open a store in September.

Last week, Mary
Oglesby was waiting in her
Arch Street home for her
son, Samuel, to drive her to
her doctor’s appointment
last Thursday, April 1st.
But instead of her son,
two police detectives
knocked on her door and
showed her a picture of her
son.
“What happened to my
son?” she asked the detectives.
“He’s dead,” a detective responded bluntly without much feeling.
“Just like that he said he
was dead,” recalls this heartbroken mother. “My son is
dead.”
Then Mother Oglesby
would learn more heartrending news.
First, the detective told
her that her 52-year-old son
died from a stab wound in his

Samuel Oglesby was fond of children
near 56th and Walnut Street.
His body lay on the sidewalk
until he was discovered by
police patrolling the area after some underground
SEPTA wires exploded about
two blocks away.
The family would also
be told that Samuel’s car
was found nearby with its
driver’s window smashed.
And worse, his body lay
in the city’s morgue for two
days as a “John Doe,” although Mrs. Oglesby said
her son always carried identification on him.
And, although news of
his murder appeared in the
Wednesday newspapers, the
family was finally notified
on Thursday.
On top of that, Samuel
Oglesby was murdered near
the home of a girlfriend,
whom the family said has
not contacted them.
So far, police told the
Westside Weekly they have
no motive or suspects in this
murder.
However, the whole handling of the situation has left
the family sad and a bit confused.
“He was a clean cut guy,”
said his mother. “He had a lot
of friends and he was a good
father, son and man.”
“I guess it was just his time
to go,” said Mother Oglesby.
“It’s just the way he went.”
The family said Samuel
was affectionately called “Jim
Dandy” and was known by
many as a gentle giant.
For a number of years he
worked as a front desk clerk
and assisted hospice patients
at Lombard Center in South
Philly, the family said.
Funeral services were today (Friday, April 9) at Camphor United Methodist Church.
His son Samuel Garcia, his
mother Mary Lee Oglesby, five
sisters and one brother, and a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends survive Samuel
Oglesby.

Oh, Deer, In Cobbs Creek
Yes, Virginia, there are
deer in Cobbs Creek Park.
However, make that minus 12 that were killed or
“removed,” as the Fairmount
Park officials called it, from
our neighborhood park that
separates the city from the
suburbs.
Most of the deer are located in the northern section
of Cobbs Creek near the golf
course. An official estimates
the number of deer in Cobbs
Creek is “several dozen.”
In all, 156 deer were harvest from the city’s four largest parks including 21 from
West Fairmount Park, 44
from Wissahickon Valley and
79 from Pennypack Park in
the Northeast.
The harvest provided
over 3,200 pounds of venison distributed through local
food banks to feed the needy,
according to Park release.
The deer were killed on
14 nights over an eight-week
period during a curfew that
prohibited the public to be in
the areas between 8 PM and 6
AM.
“The amount of deer removed represents a significant step toward reversing the
impact of deer overpopulation on the vegetation in these
forests,” according to the Park
release, “and reducing the
number of deer vehicle collisions on Philadelphia roadways.”

The Stokes Sisters
Will Sing For You
ing.
It’s the free will offering
at the church pastored by Rev.
Nathaniel R. Walker, Sr.
A number of other groups
and individuals will also perform, including The Blues
Gates of Harmony, The Flying Clouds, The Christ United
Gospel Singers, the Rev. Sam
Peak on saxophone, and the
Sanctuary Choir of Mount
Pleasant.
Sister Brewington said it
was her father, the late Deacon Larry Stokes, who explained to her that “an angel”
from God wanted her to make
a decision in her life — to
sing the Gospel to glorify her
Savior Jesus Christ; or the
secular songs that could bring
her fame and fortune.
She chose to sing for Jesus
and it has taken her and the
Stokes Sisters around the
world, including Alaska, the
Caribbean
and
even
Bangkok, Thailand, where a
usually emotionless people
clapped along with their rejoicing, recalls Sister
Brewington. The choir has
sung in the Holy Land twice.
Last year, this singing
family was honored with the
prestigious Gospel Legends
Award from the American
Gospel Quartet Convention.
The family choir has
changed over the years. It’s
members from time to time
were made up with her
mother, Deaconess Minnie
Lee Stokes, her sisters, Alice
Stokes, Rosa Stokes, Jeanette
Stokes Godwin and Christine Carroll Stokes; her
daughter,
Larella
Brewington; granddaughter,
Robin Brewington; her niece,
Angela Stokes; and a spiritual daughter, Jovell Stilley.
And her father was their chaplain.
Today, mom, dad and sister Alice are gone, and some
of the original Stokes Sisters
have retired or moved on.
But Sister Brewington is
still singing “For Me,” and
says she has no regrets.
AMEN.
On the jacket of their CD, The Stokes Sisters
surround isster Catherine Brewington
There’s this wonderful
moment in Sister Catherine
Stokes Brewington’s life that
transformed her living and
carried her confidently
through the years.
It really happened twice.
The first time she was when
she was 16-year-old and
walking through a meadow
in Easly, South Carolina.
That’s when she heard
“The Voice.”
“It said, ‘Catherine.
Catherine. Sing for him for
sing for Me.,’” she recalls.
The second time was in
the vestibule of her first Philadelphia home in 1948 when
she was invited to audition
for the then-famous Tommy
Dorsey jazz and swing band.
That’s when she said she
heard “The Voice” again.
“This time, it was louder,”
she said.
“Catherine. Catherine.
Sing for him or sing for Me.”
She decided not to sing
those jazzy tunes in nightclubs or anywhere for ‘him.’
In the 1960’s, while work-
ing in a restaurant, she was
ask to tryout as the understudy to the legendary Pearl
Bailey (a Philadelphia native)
in the stage production of
“Hello, Dolly.”
It might have led to a very
lucrative singing career, but
again she decided not to sing
for ‘him.’
No, Sister Catherine
Stokes Brewington is no
loonytoon. She’s a mother, a
grandmother, a woman and a
Christian who has both of her
feet on the ground and a voice
that shakes the spirit and stirs
the soul. She’s also the cousin
to civil rights leader, the Rev.
Jesse L. Jackson.
On Sunday, April 11 at
5:30 PM, Sister Catherine will
sing for ‘Me’ and You at
Mount Pleasant Baptist
Church near 56th and Vine
Streets.
She will be in concert as

better than the Bartram ladies.

What seemed to save
them beside Ms. Jordan’s
pitching, was their fielding.
These young ladies can catch
the ball.
“We need to work on base
running,”
admitted
Overbrook Coach Karem
Godwin.
Coach Godwin said his
team is a young one with only
three or four seniors.
“We will definitely make
the playoffs,” he added.
Last year, 'brook finished
the season with a 7-2 record
and was undefeated at home.

The next fight card at the Blue Horizon will

In a near packed house at the Legendary Blue Horizon, Heavyweight Bryant
“Bye-Bye" Jennings became an instant
crowd favorite. In only his second professional fight and his first at the Blue Horizon stole the show from the Ennis brothers
Derek and Farah who headlined a great
night of fights.
Billed as the “Spring Fling", the Blue
Horizon fight fans enjoyed a night of intense fighting and emerging fan favorites.
Everyone anticipated that the Co-Main
Event headlined by the reigning USBA Jr.
Middleweight Derek “Pooh" Ennis and his
brother Super Middleweight Farah Ennis
would be the talk of night.

COURT VERDICTS
Antwon Sanders will be sentenced in courtroom 1008 at
the CJC on aggravated assault and other related offenses for
the February 20, 2009 shooting of Fateem Gresham. Sanders
shot at Gresham and another man at 60th and Spruce because
he didn’t like the way Gresham looked at him. ADA William
Davis is prosecuting this case.
Tyrik Nelson, 26, and Lamont McDowell, 22, were
recently convicted of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault and related charges for a double shooting near 55th and
Girard. Cequora Jones and Kevin Rawls were both shot by
the defendants; Mr. Rawls was shot in the face but miraculously survived.
“ADA Paul Reddel used several thoughtful strategies to
obtain this conviction, including DNA evidence,” says District Attorney Seth Williams. “Tyrik Nelson and Lamont
McDowell will not pose a threat to the public for a long time.”
Nelson and McDowell will be sentenced on April 20,
2010 in courtroom 1008 at the CJC.
