KINETTE SONG
Here we are together once again.
Happy in the family of Kin
We’ve forgot our cares and worries too
Kinette’s we’ve work to do
Each of us will help to bind the tie
So the heart of Kin will never die
One and all let’s raise our voices high
KINETTES, KINETTES, KINETTES
KINETTE GRACE
May the Lord make us true
Kinettes
In our thoughts and deeds,
And makes us truly grateful
For the food we receive.
AMEN
KIN GRACE
Happy to meet. Sorry to part,
Happy to meet again
May the Lord make us true Kin,
In our thoughts and deeds,
And make us truly grateful
For the food we receive. AMEN
KIN SONG
Here we are together once again,
One and all a happy bunch of Kin,
Leave your cares and troubles for awhile,
Let your face break forth in smile.
Turn around, grab someone by the hand,
They’re your friends, the finest in the land,
Now all set, let's shout to beat the band,
Kinsmen, Kinettes and Kin!

September Presidents Pen
It feels just like yesterday that we were out celebrating at the Lehr’s Barn swearing in our new Executive and filling ourselves
to the brim with free flowing spirits. But…here we are gearing up for another Kin year that’s ACTION packed with community
service events, fun, fellowship, fundraising and soooo much more!
My goals this year are to promote the fun in Kin, educate our members and help make our name more visible in the
community. Sometimes the fun is lost because people are so busy with their personal lives and when they donate their time
and efforts to Kin there never seems to be enough time for the extra socializing you would like to do. This year, were going to
make every effort to bring fun to our meetings and projects.
When you participate and get involved in projects, traveling and having fun you get to know each other better and you
develop bonds and good friendships with this group of ladies with similar interests, even though we are all uniquely different.
So my challenge to all of you is to remember when you were first a new Kinette and to try to approach this year with the same
new and excited enthusiasm. It’s always scary when you are the “new” person, so make sure to be inviting to guests and new
members and go out of your way to be an ambassador and mentor.
Margo and I plan to reintroduce Kin Motivation which is an incentive / rewards program. This program will help initiate
interest in participation in club business, activities and promotion while having fun and in the end qualify for a really great
reward. We have come up with a chart that outlines certain activities that will be awarded a variety of points that a person
would accumulate throughout the year to earn the chance to win a cool prize at the end of the year.
As a club we have decided that we want to focus more on the actual service aspect by volunteering more of our time to the
charities and causes we have supported financially over the years. We have decided not to just write a cheque, but roll up our
sleeves and support them with manpower if possible, along with our sincere and honest efforts to further their causes and
assist those who benefit from the services and resources these charities and organizations offer.
In an effort to provide more education in our meetings, we will be having guest speakers come to the meetings and present on
their charity while we are eating. The speakers will present around 6:45 which will give us time to get started at 6:30 with our
Kin Song and Grace, dish up and be ready with listening ears at 6:45. This will help get everything we want done and have to
do during our General meetings - plus it gives us points for the Rosebowl by having guest speakers!!
I invite any suggestions or feedback on what you would like to see this year and ways to hopefully meet everyone’s
expectations of where they would like to grow and what they want to take from the year. We are all part of a team, everyone
counts no matter how many years of experience in Kin any one individual may have, we all bring different qualities to the table
which makes us a dynamic group and when we all work together many hands make light work.
I look forward to the year and I hope you are too, lets make a difference!
Yours in Kin,
Diva
President
“Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens:
not by what life brings us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude we bring to life.
A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes.
It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results”

Getting to Know Your Kin Sister
The object of the exercise is to have the partners plan some time to spend
together to get to know one another then introduce their partner about
what they’ve learned about that person at the General Meeting assigned
below. If a person is not available during their assigned meeting, we will
adjust the introduction accordingly. The get togethers can happen any time
throughout the Kin year and obviously do not need to be limited to just one
visit, each partner should take a turn planning an activity together and be
ready to introduce each other when the time comes. Have fun getting to
know your Kin Sister!

National Convention 2012 - “Lifting Kin to New Heights”
Peterborough
Submitted by: Davina Thuroo
Monday – destination Peterborough
My adventure started off by arriving at the airport 1 ½ hrs early to find out that my flight was delayed another 2 hrs because of canceled
flights and changes made due to a thunder storm the night before in Calgary - the sky was actually orange and was lit up most of the night
with a lightening / hail storm. So Tracy Berquist (from Cold Lake) and I took up residency in the local Chili’s restaurant and had ourselves
some lunch. We had plenty of time to kick up the “cankles” and relax. We get to Toronto late for our shuttle so we had to wait to catch
the next shuttle along with another fellow Kin member from Calgary who lost his luggage - glad it was him and not me - sorry to say but
true! We arrived at the hotel at 10:30 much later than was originally planned, but we were greeted by our fellow zone F’ers Kim and Gord
Peters. We weren’t too adventurous this night we got to our room, unpacked ordered some pizza and passed out.
Tuesday - Kwartha Shopping
We started our day off by waiting for our shuttle that was 1 ½ hrs late,
but we were able to get to visit and get to know our fellow travelers. We
visited lots of little shops, Trent University and even had lunch at the
Lovesick Lake Park Restaurant - I didn’t find love even though Gord
Patterson wishes (yes, he was there - God help me), but I did find a
mouthful of deliciousness when we all ordered a butter tart that was like
nothing I have ever consumed before in my life (okay I need a
minute………). K, I’m good now. We decided on a whim that we would
join our Governors Rob & Pam Moncrieff on an adventure to a Blue Jays
game so we cut our day trip short, headed back to the hotel where we
then jumped into the chair of the conventions shaggin’ wagon. He didn’t
know us from Adam, but lent us his car - total strangers who don’t know
where the hell we are going. Isn’t Kin awesome? He did tell us to not

pop the trunk (a little suspicious), ignore the engine light, and don’t adjust anything…k - I am scared. We had quite the laughs on the way
to Oshawa to catch the Go Train to TO…Rob driving this 1990 Cadillac or whatever with leather seats and his 3 bitches…to funny…I guess
we were on the clock. We get to the train station, we park miles away, when the
train doors open we were flooded with people running like the train was going to
blow-up or something, did they know something we didn’t? It was the funniest
thing ever! So we hit the rails (no drugs), just the Go Train…on our way to watch
the Jays. We get there and we don’t know where the hell we are going so we
follow people who we think know where there going and low and behold we walk
about 5 km more than we needed but we met a lot of scalpers along the way
which made for awesome conversations and bartering. We ended up with great
seats and enjoyed a big old foot long wiener, big beer, popcorn and ice cream.
Full to the brim! The Jays lost to the Chicago White Sox, but it was a close game.
Hard to believe I know. We saw Elvis after the game, no we didn’t have heat
stroke, he was really there - but he was covered in silver - go figure….must be an

iconic thing or something. Time for Rob to get his bitches back home to make him
some money, TO was too saturated so he figured it would be more profitable for him to take us back to Peterborough. These ladies of the
evening hit the sack when we got back as it was a long day…yes alone…AGAIN.
16
Wednesday - Kawartha Waterways Adventure
Up and ready to rock again bright and early for our day trip. We started our
adventure at the Canoe Museum - intense huh? Ya, I know tons now on
wood…quiz me. We toured the Locks System which is phenomenal; you really
should see it sometime. The one Lock raised and lowered us in a large tour boat
over 68 feet in probably about 4 minutes, crazy cool. Public Speaking kicked off
the convention and it was really difficult to figure out who the winner would be as
the caliber continues to improve. Opening ceremonies were held at the Kinsmen
Civic Center where we had an M+M BBQ, guest speakers and a fabulous fireworks
show. The alligators in the great lakes can grow to 60 feet. The hospitality was
held at the Wing AFAC which is an Air Force club house that the Kinsmen use.
They had an entertaining band that was extremely funny and got people in the Kin
Spirit.
The 68’ Lock – Amazing!
Thursday - Cystic Fibrosis Luncheon Day
Wakey, Wakey time to get up and get your own breakfast as it wasn’t
supplied this year because all the hotels with the exception of ours “the
host hotel” provided continental breakfast so we picked up our own
everyday. This sucked, but the budget for convention was definitely
utilized for entertainment which was great so I will gladly give up my bacon
– this time. The meeting convened with normal business with the yearend report. Some highlights of the report included; we are at just under
85% retention, our recruitment rate is at 10.8%, 13 clubs ceased operation,
32 Life Memberships were awarded, 12 Hal Rogers Fellows, District Four is
at a -20 for our Membership which is disappointing as we have been in a
positive situation, D5 +23 and D6 +24 - impressive. Things heated up at
the convention when an individual basically approached the microphone
to address Ric the CEO of Kin Canada and what hasn’t been done at
Phenomenal performance by Leahy
National Headquarters and basically blamed him for his District not participating in events like National. This got people upset and talking
about respecting one another and going through proper channels in order to address
things. In a way, it brought people together, but it did affect the tone of the meetings
which were basically a “cluster F”, what a disappointment. We didn’t get through
even half of the business and it was the end of the day so we were looking forward to
the evening festivities where they had a “Search for a Star” competition that was
really good. Local talent from within a 2 hour radius came to entertain us while we
enjoyed an outdoor BBQ followed by an AMAZING performance by Leahy. They’re a
family of 11 of which 8 play in their family band. All of them play every instrument
and can dance, they even had their kids make a special appearance - they dance too
(from 4 - 12 yrs old), unbelievable. I was soooo entertained; I had tears in my eyes
from laughing and smiling. When that was done, they challenged us partake in a
“Taste of George Street” by visiting local pubs on a pub crawl. There are so many

pubs in downtown Peterborough; you would swear you were in Newfoundland. Good
times had by all as you can see from the photo – strip singing.

Friday - Michael “Pinball” Clemons Keynote Speaker & Service Day
Action packed day, we started with “Pinball” speaking about what keeps us doing what we do and finding our sweet spot, being honest to
ourselves and giving back unselfishly. He talked about how his mom did everything she
could to provide for him while they lived in the Broncs without complaint. Where they
didn’t have financial wealth, they were rich with respect and compassion for others that
had less than them. Never judge until you have walked a mile in someone else’s shoes
and things may not always be what they seem. I attended the Club Leadership Seminar
and actually learned a lot, one of the most impressive things I learned was that we are
actually able to transfer 100% of our Service dollars into our General account. I also
discovered this workshop is
available on the National Website
under Successful Clubs, Kin
Education and Club Executive
Seminar. It was designed in a

format was regretfully rushed. We
then ventured to the
Peterborough Zoo where we helped debut picnic tables that were built and donated
to the zoo, we also performed random acts of kindness by handing out kids t-shirts
and tote bags to random children (okay, it was a little weird and pedophilish - just
sayin’), followed by a National Convention photo. The Service Gala highlights include:

Service Dollars - District 3 at $8,358,932.66, Hal & Elspeth Rogers National Service Award winner - Kinette Club of Cornwall - District 6.
Saturday - Election & President’s Gala
It was really interesting to have two phenomenal candidates up for the role of NVP, they campaigned hardcore and gave the fight of their
lives while holding their friendship close, which is really difficult. It was very difficult as there had to be a second place as there are no
losers. The winner is….Melodie LeMongieue of District 6. Melodie was a Kin Kid and has devoted a large part of her life to Kin and is
completely stoked to further her aspirations. There was a POH presentation and it was announced that over $200,000 was raised for the
cause. The HREF committee presented a promotion they are running asking clubs to donate their Sergeant-at-Arms fines to the bursary
program in addition to their annual donation. Their slogan is - “It’s a $ FINE $ time to support Kin Canada Bursaries”. The Mount Pearl
Kinettes presented on next years Convention in St. John’s Newfoundland with the theme of “Mummers Kinvene” August 14-17. The
President’s Ball was filled with glitz and glam. Penny Lees-Smith our incoming President is from D4 and she definitely going to make us
proud. She found out that night that she’s going to be a Grandma, she prefers the term Glama!
This year’s convention was different as D4 representation was definitely down, along with everyone else. We missed all of you, it wasn’t
the same, but we tried our best to make you proud and party like rock stars. We maybe a club of only 19 members, but we are mighty and
what we do does make a huge difference not only in our community but in the lives of others living with CF, people trying to further their
education who otherwise probably couldn’t without Hal Rogers Bursaries and so many other benefactors. Keep up the great work!
Yours in Kin,
Davina

Things I will remember: The way I feel from all the good laughs spent with old and new friends. The way I feel when I see all the good
we do all over our country with like minded people. The way I feel when you are welcomed with open arms by people you look upto and
admire. The way I feel when I am appreciated for who I am and what I offer, and last but not least the way I feel when I we spend quality
time with people I care about! Great memories

MENTORSHIP
As an Association we are always asking our members to go out and find ways of recruiting new members so we can
grow. We have come to realize the best recruiting tool is “Just Ask”.
So, we now have the member in our club and it is a proven fact that if the member doesn’t feel engaged to what is
happening in the first couple of years they are more than likely going to leave. This is where I feel a Mentorship
Program for the clubs would help immensely. We can’t think we can bring new members in and hope they find their
own way. I think we need to look at having a set guideline for mentoring our new members for the first 2 years in
the Association. By this I don’t mean having to look over their shoulder and babysit them but to ensure they are
getting the correct info and are being made to feel welcome and that they are contributing. A new member should
be assigned a mentor when they join. To be effective it should be someone who is volunteering rather than
appointed for this. Below I have listed a few details which should be looked at by the mentor.
a. Ensure the members application has been sent to National for registration
b. During the first couple of meetings sit with member to explain the happenings of the meeting and what
certain acronyms stand for i.e. FLC(Fall Leadership Conference)
c. Upon receipt of the new members kit, go over it with the member and explain the history, personal growth
opportunities and the Maple Leaf Award.
d. The Mentor should be the member’s information guide on what is happening in the club, Zone, District and
Association.
e. Encourage the member to be part of a committee.
The mentor is the person who would help ensure the member is engaged in club activities but it is the club as a
whole who has to make the member welcome and ensure there is a positive culture in the club in which the new
member wants to be a part of.
Again, the main recruiting tool is “Just Ask” but in order to RETAIN the recruited members you have to make them
feel wanted and make them feel they are making a difference in their community and the Association. This is where
I think the mentor can play a big role.

WHO IS YOUR KINSPIRATION?
SINCE FEBRUARY 20, 1920 KIN CANADA HAS BEEN ENHANCING THE LIVES OF MILLIONS THROUGH OUR GREAT
SERVICE WORK WHILE ENJOYING GREAT FELLOWSHIP AND MAKING THIS GREAT COUNTRY A WONDERFUL PLACE TO
CALL HOME.
From the time you joined KIN think back to who you believe your mentor in KIN is or was. Who was that person
that inspired or for a better word KINSPIRED you. Every person has a person that they have looked up to.
Think hard of the person who has inspired you in KIN when you joined or who keeps inspiring you now. It
doesn’t have to be a novel just a few words to let us know.
The deadline for submissions will be April 30th 2013. This is not a contest but there will be great prizes to be
won. The submissions will be posted on a video to be played at District Conference, with the members approval of
course. The plan is to have random draws from the members who submitted and have 15 prizes. The prizes will be
tickets to clubs different events. As prizes come in the poster will be updated. This will also help promote these
clubs events. Clubs already sponsoring prizes:
1. ST. ALBERT KINSMEN – 2 TICKETS FOR SATURDAY OR SUNDAY NIGHT/RAINMAKER RODEO

Hi Ladies,
I hope everyone had a great summer and is looking forward to the year ahead with the club. I have received a
request from Elm Street School of Medicine Hat School District No. 76. Elm Street School is a community
elementary school offering kindergarten to grade six.
The request is for support of the school nutrition program. The school nutrition program consists of a mid morning
snack and lunch program provided to kids who come to school with empty stomachs. Last year Redi volunteers
prepared and served 165 snacks with a cup of milk each day. The snack and lunch program costs about $17
000.00/year.
Studies have proven that when children have adequate nutrition kids will have improved learning skills.
Please think about the request and we can discuss at the September meeting.
Candice
Editors Notes
I hope that you all enjoy the first Bulletin. It isn't quite up to my standards but unfortunately, life took over the
week that I had dedicated to completion and you know how that goes. I am excited to be able to do the bulletin for
the club this year and I hope that you find it entertaining, encouraging and informative. A proper bulletin can not
be complete without submissions so please remember to email me pictures, event reports, fun facts, personal
profiles or anything else your heart desires. If I have it one week prior to the meeting night I will be more than
happy to add it in.
I am aiming to have the bulletin in your inbox on the Wednesday evening prior to the meeting so that you will all
have time to review and enjoy.
Keep your eyes open in the bulletin for opportunities to learn and if you find something that has no business being
there…shhhh don't tell!!
I look forward to the year ahead and I hope you enjoy reading the bulletin as much as I enjoy preparing it.
Y'all come back now ya hear……..
