A couple of good eggs
Ten years ago the Veldkamp brothers teamed up to produce
heart-healthy eggs
We salute & back our
local dairy producers!

Spurred by a family history of
heart problems, Darwin and Arlan
Veldkamp began raising hens that
produce heart-friendly eggs to
help their families live a healthier
lifestyle. Nearly 10 years later,
what began as a healthy hobby
has become a secondary source
of income for the Garretson, S.D.
brothers.
They originally started crop
farming together in 1988. Then in
2000 they started raising chickens,
which produced the heart healthy
eggs that are rich in Omega 3 fatty
acids and lower in saturated fat.
“We’ve done so much stuff
together from the very beginning,”
Darwin said. “We do everything
fifty –fifty.”
The fact that the brothers
and their families live in close
proximity makes the arrangement

when I started feeding it. I’ve been
running about 82 pounds per cow
ever since.”
Schaap feeds a ration of dry
hay, haylage, wet distillers grain,
soybean meal, mineral, cottonseed,
corn silage and liquid sweet feeds.
He says his ration, balanced with
the help of area nutritionists,
including local technical liquid
product manager Wayne Quinn of
Form-A-Feed, is about the highestproduction, lowest-cost option
available today.
“When milk prices started going
down a while back, I took a real
hard look at my ration in terms
of productivity and return on my
feed costs,” he said. “I found I had
about the most efficient ration
possible — the highest return
on the lowest cost out there. If I
trimmed anything back just to save
a few cents here, it would have cost
me on my production there. Fact
of the matter is, the cows are doing
the best they’ve ever done.”
The benefits of liquid feed extend
beyond increased production and
lower feed costs, too, Schaap said.
“Feeding liquid allows me to feed
a lot less corn,” he said, “meaning I
have more to sell.”
Schaap runs about 850 acres of
ground, 460 of which are devoted
to corn and about 200 of which are
in alfalfa.

said, turning even marginal hay
into a feedstuff worthy of intake.
While the Schaaps attribute
much of their herd’s productivity
numbers to their ration, Jody
Schaap says other factors — like
a three-a-day milking schedule —
have only boosted efficiencies and
revenues as well.
“When we went to milking three
times per day from two, we saw our
per-cow average shoot up another
eight pounds per day,” she said.
“A cow will only produce as much
as her udder will hold. We’re just
draining that udder when it needs
to be drained.”
The schedule change demanded
additional time and personnel.
“At first, we tried to do it ourselves,”
Jeff Schaap said, “ourselves” being
he; Jody; his father-in-law, Arlen
Schmidt; and Schmidt’s wife,
Lois. “But we soon found that was
pretty tough, so we went out and
got some hired help.”
Schmidt Dairy employs three
full-time milkers who help with
the 5 a.m., 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.
milkings. Their 270 head milk out
in between three and a half and
four hours, cleanup time included.
That rate is facilitated by the stateof-the-art double-12 milking
parlor constructed a few years
back, which allows the Schaaps to
milk two dozen cows at a time and
average about 90 per hour.
“The
three-a-day
milking
schedule is also easier on the
cows,” Jeff Schaap said. “It leads to
healthier and happier cattle that
get up and eat more and produce
more milk.”
The new barns also employ the
latest in cow-comfort technology,
including dual-chambered waterfilled mats the cattle have taken to
well.
“They like them,” Jeff Schaap
said. “If they’re not eating, they’re
laying down and that’s really all we
want them doing.”
The barns are also temperaturecontrolled, keeping the cows —
and workers — cool in the summer
and warm in the winter.
“It was all geared toward cow
comfort,” Jeff Schaap said, “a
mindset that is really paying
dividends.”
In addition to increasing
cow comfort, leading to higher
production, the new facilities also
reduce labor. From easy manure
collection technology to centeraisle feeding and easy-breed
facilities, not a finger is lifted that
doesn’t have to be, Jeff Schaap
said.
“We do all our own breeding,”
he said, “and our reproductivity
stats are well above average.”
The Schaaps keep a close eye on
that through a specially designed
computer program that allows
them to track efficiencies down to
the individual cow and individual
worker and make adjustments on
the fly.
“We track all aspects of
breeding and production,” Jody
Schaap said. “We can see when
production is down and then
pinpoint the problem before it
gets too serious. It’s all about
efficiency. How efficient can we
get our operation?”

“We do lots of the management
stuff together,” he said. “I’ll usually
handle most of the bookkeeping
and Jody seems to be able to
handle herd-health issues better
than I can. It must take a woman’s
touch.”
The touch of a woman with
years of experience, that is.
“I remember being out in the
old barns helping out when I was
just 5 years old,” she said.
Now the Schaaps’ two children,
Kaitlyn, 2, and Devin, almost 1
— the fifth generation to work
Schmidt Dairy Farms — are in the
barns, helping out however they
can.
“This has always been and
continues to be a true family
operation,” Jody Schaap said.
“It’s been built on family and
that’s what’s given it such a strong
foundation. It’s just up to us to
keep it going strong.”

so popular that the brothers can
no longer produce enough eggs to
satisfy consumers.
“We can’t keep up with
demand,” Darwin said. “We keep
adding more chickens. We’ve been
running 150 a year; now we went
up to 200 to try to keep up with it.”
When the brothers started
raising chickens they had very
few and let their children take
care of them. As the demand
grew and production increased,
Arlan and Darwin took over. They
experimented with many different
kinds of chickens, Arlan said, in

had the highest egg production
and was easiest to care for.
Five years ago they settled
on gold star pullets, which lay
brown eggs. Leghorns, which lay
white eggs, typically have a higher
output, but are more difficult to
care for. An average leghorn, Arlan
said, will produce more than 400
eggs in a cycle and the gold stars
produce about 380.
“I think we probably chose
the brown egg layers just simply
because they’re a calmer bird,”
Arlan said.
The secret to the popularity,
however, is in the feed, not the
breed. By feeding the chickens a
highly nutritious diet that includes
alfalfa greens, corn, soybean meal,
flax and grass, the hens produce
eggs that are higher in Omega 3
fatty acids.
“In order to get Omega 3 eggs
we have to have flax in the diet,”
Arlan said. “Flax is high in Omega
3 oil.”
Last year the brothers produced
1,800 dozen (21,600) eggs.
“When we started, we had
our eggs tested and they were 20
percent lower in saturated fat than
the analytical values,” Arlan said.
“It’s a healthier, leaner egg.”
Another factor that leads to the
production of healthier eggs is that
in the summer the brothers put
the egg-producing hens in 10-x-10
foot portable outdoor structures
with no floors. The structures,
which house about 50 hens, allow
the birds to eat the grass beneath.
“In one day’s time there won’t
be any grass left,” Darwin said.

they prefer the grass.
“That was the biggest surprise
when we first started, is how much
grass they will eat if given the
chance,” Arlan said.
Currently, the brothers have 225
broilers (to eat), 200 pullets (preegg producing females) and 150
egg producing hens for a total bird
count of 575. In eight weeks, Darwin
said, the chickens they recently
received will reach about sevenand-a-half pounds live weight,
or about three pounds processed
weight. Generally, he likes to raise
the broilers for nine-to-10 weeks
to allow them to reach a heavier
weight, thus yielding closer to four
or five pounds after processing.
“I figure you can do three
pounders, but you have the same
amount of bone in a three pound
chicken as you do a four to five
pound,” Darwin said. “I never met
anybody that likes bones yet, so I
usually raise them about nine to
ten weeks just to get them a little
bit bigger.”

of Tyler learned last week that they survived the latest
dealer cuts announced by General Motors.
Last week GM notified via termination letters to 1124
GM dealers (reportedly 29 in Minnesota) that one or
