In Memoriam
Mary Elizabeth Carnegie, DPA, RN, FAAN
April 1916 — February 2008
Dr. Mary Elizabeth Lancaster Carnegie was born on April 19, 1916, in
Baltimore, Maryland, the fourth child of John Oliver Lancaster and
Adeline Beatrice Swann Lancaster. She married Eric Carnegie in 1944.
Dr. Carnegie received her initial nursing education through a diploma
program at the Lincoln School for Nurses, New York. She earned a
bachelor of arts degree from West Virginia State College, a master of
arts degree from Syracuse University, and a doctor of philosophy degree
in public administration from New York University.
Dr. Carnegie was appointed the acting director of the Division of Nurse Education at Hampton
University in 1943. While serving as director, Dr. Carnegie initiated the first baccalaureate
nursing program in the state of Virginia. In 1945, she became the first dean of the School of
Nursing at Florida A&M University, and in 1949 became the first black nurse appointed to a
state nursing association board when she was appointed to the Florida Nurses Association. She
was also the first black nurse to serve as president of the
American Academy of Nursing (1978-1979). In 1977, Hampton
University established the Mary Elizabeth Carnegie Endowed
Nursing Archives, the first archives in the nation designated as a
repository for historical documents on minority nurses,
particularly African American nurses. In 1979, she was
appointed the first researcher-in-residence at the Hampton
University School of Nursing. From 1988-1999, she served as
chair of the American Nurses Association’s Minority Fellowship
Program Advisory Committee. Dr. Carnegie was the first black
assistant editor of the American Journal of Nursing (1953-1978), associate editor for Nursing
Outlook (1956), and chief editor as well as editor emeritus of Nursing Research from 1973 until
her death.
Throughout her career, she delivered over 300 speeches; wrote, edited, or contributed chapters
to 23 books; and published 72 articles, including editorials, in 22 national and international
journals. Her commitment to upgrading the status of black nurses led to many personal
triumphs, including the much-heralded publication of the history of black nurses in her
groundbreaking book, The Path We Tread. Dr. Carnegie was past national officer of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; chairperson emeriti, American Nurses Association Minority
Fellowship Program Advisory Committee; past president, American Academy of Nursing;
member, National Black Nurses Association; member, American Association for the History of
Nursing; and past board member, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Inc.
Her accomplishments were acknowledged by some of the most prestigious universities and
organizations in the nation. She received many accolades, including the following: George
Arens Pioneer Medal, Syracuse University; President’s Award, Sigma Theta Tau International
Honor Society of Nursing; Living Legend Award, Association of Black Nurse Faculty in
Higher Education; Mary Mahoney Award, American Nurses Association; and the Estelle
Osborne Award, New York University. In 1995, Howard University Division of Nursing
established the M. Elizabeth Carnegie Endowed Visiting Professorship in Nursing Research.
Dr. Carnegie was inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame in 2000.

HAMPTON UNIVERSITY
School of Nursing
The School of Nursing is an integral unit of Hampton University and shares its goals and ideals
of excellence in the teaching-living-learning process. Nursing education at Hampton University
began with the Hampton Training School for Nurses in 1891. At the turn of the century,
Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute and Dixie Hospital (now Sentara CarePlex)
partnered to offer premier nursing education and health care for Peninsula residents. Since
1944, the nursing faculty at Hampton University has provided high-quality professional nursing
education at the bachelor of science degree level. This undergraduate program has the
distinction of being the oldest baccalaureate nursing program in the Commonwealth. In 1976,
Hampton University instituted a master of science degree program in nursing, making Hampton
the first historically black college and university (HBCU) to offer a master's degree in nursing.
In 1999, the School of Nursing achieved another distinction when Hampton University
instituted a PhD nursing program, the first at a HBCU. The School of Nursing operates a
mobile unit as a Nursing Center to serve as a practice arena. The Center for Minority Family
Health serves as the research arm of the School of Nursing. The School of Nursing is approved
by the Virginia Board of Nursing (2013) and is fully accredited by the National League for
Nursing Accrediting Commission (2009) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education
(2011).
Class of 2008
NURSING PIN
The School of Nursing’s pin is a representation of the middle of
the Hampton University seal. The official seal was accepted in
1875 and only the name has changed as Hampton has evolved
from the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute to Hampton
Institute to Hampton University.
The symbols on the seal and the pin are a plow and sheaths of
grain; books of knowledge surmounted by a globe of the world; a
bible stand; and, an old-fashioned printing press. The sunrise
over Hampton Creek symbolizes the rise of educational
opportunities, and the boat on the water symbolizes the principal
medium of transportation to Hampton during its early history.
Each new graduate is eligible to receive the
Hampton University School of Nursing pin,
which symbolizes the transition from student to nurse.
