Škrdlovice & Beránek is one of the 20th
century’s greatest forgotten glass companies.
For decades, the identity of the company
was largely hidden from the world and the
major contribution it made to 20th Century
glass design is only now being uncovered and
reappraised by scholars, design historians and
collectors.

Beránek: Legends of Czech Glass, London,

Founded in 1942, in the midst of the Second
World War by the enterprising and talented
glass master Emanuel Beránek, the company’s
earliest designs were produced using waste
broken glass, peat to fire the furnaces and
a huge amount of raw talent and sheer
determination.

Foreign influence contributed to the development of cloisonné during the early fourteenth to fifteenth century in China. It has been suggested
that the technique was introduced via the western province of Yunnan, which, under Mongol rule, received an influx of Islamic people.
Cloisonné objects were intended primarily for the furnishing of temples and palaces, because their flamboyant splendour was considered
appropriate to the function of these structures, but not well suited to a more restrained atmosphere, such as that of a scholar’s home.
This opinion was expressed by Cao Zhao in 1388 in his influential Gegu Yaolun (Guide to the Study of Antiquities), in which cloisonné was
dismissed as being suitable only for lady’s chambers. However, by the period of Emperor Xuande, this ware came to be greatly prized at court.

Chūshingura is arguably the most famous play in the Kabuki and Bunraku repertoires, engaging audiences for three centuries. Written and first
staged in 1748, its authors were the three playwrights Takeda Izumo II, Miyoshi Shōraku and Namiki Senryū.
The story of the 47 rōnin who avenged the death of their lord is often cited as an example of the samurai code of honour known as bushido. It is a
tremendous human drama involving many characters caught in a complex web of loyalties that demand devotion to and sacrifice for an altruistic
cause. Perhaps this is the most powerful attraction in modern Japan, and the reason for its enduring popularity.

PROVENANCE
Sold: Stephan Welz & Co., In Association with Sotheby’s, Johannesburg, August, 2000, Lot 435
Sir John George Fraser, politician and lawyer in Beaufort West and Bloemfontein. He was a strong
supporter of President Brand and chairman of the Volksraad from 1884 to 1896. He opposed
participation in the second Anglo-Boer War.
According to family tradition, this was a 50th wedding anniversary gift from King George V. This would
account for the piece not being hallmarked. Sir John married Dorothea Ortlepp in Colesberg on 18
April 1866.
