Arts and Culture
in Abundance
The Sanctuary has opened with dignitaries and choirs. The Los
Angeles Philharmonic has graced us with their glorious music.
But that was just the beginning. Now the excitement continues
as we fill both our campuses with music, theater, film, speakers,
classes, and special Shabbat and holiday events.
Take a look at our Salon Shabbat events, which occur once
a month and will feature the music of Carole King, the great
Middle Eastern sounds of Yuval Ron, and an Eastern European
Klezmerfest, among others—something for every musical taste.
You should really try Nefesh, our soulful monthly alternative
Shabbat service with a great band followed by dinner, held at
the Glazer Campus on the third Friday of every month.
This spring for sports fans, sportscaster Charley Steiner will
join filmmaker James L. Freedman for our screening of his
documentary, Glickman, with hot dogs, popcorn, and beer.
We will also host the nationally acclaimed Jewish Women’s
Theatre this year, presenting three new shows.
And don’t miss the Groundlings—back by popular demand to
do improv on the Purim story, this time with Motown Music—or
our special tour of the Sanctuary, followed by high tea.

Before Marv Albert and Bob Costas, there was Marty
Glickman. A gifted Jewish-American athlete who was
denied the chance to represent the U.S. at the 1936

most revered and influential sportscasters in history,
pioneering many of the techniques, phrases, and
programming innovations that are commonplace in
sports reporting today.
Followed by a conversation with Glickman writer/
director/ producer James L. Freedman and L.A.

Why Us? The Jewish Gene
Sunday, February 23, 3:30-6:00 p.m.
Second Wednesday of the month
7:00–9:00 p.m.
Join us for a potentially life-changing event about
BRCA, the inherited cancer gene.
The MISS/TCF Foundation support group provides
comfort, validation, and compassion for bereaved
parents after a pregnancy or infant loss of any kind.
The group is conducted in a safe environment where
grieving families can either share their experiences
or just come to listen.
The Facts:
• Jewish women and men have at least 10 times
greater risk of carrying the BRCA gene mutation
than the general population
• 1 in 40 individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry
carry a BRCA gene.
• Women who carry the mutation have a much
greater risk of developing breast cancer (up to
80%) or ovarian cancer (45%).
• Men can carry and pass on the gene mutations
too, which also increase risk of melanoma and
pancreatic and prostate cancer.

“Death, Dying & Dessert: Reflections
on 20 Questions About Dying”
Author Susan Lieberman, Interviewed
by Rabbi Karen Fox
Monday, April 28, 7:30 p.m.
Most of us believe we will die. We just don’t expect it
in our lifetimes.
This accessible and engaging book considers the
steps we can take while we are healthy to ease stress
and anxiety both for ourselves and those we love
when life approaches its end. It seems odd to find a
book about dying that can make us laugh, but this
one can. The questions heading the 20 chapters invite
us to think, talk, and act in ways intended to make
dying less frightening. Raise all the gutsy questions
that come to mind!

If someone were to ask you when and where you would like to have been born, your answer should
be right here and right now. Never before in all of Jewish history has there been a more talented,
more capable, and more blessed generation of Jews. We are truly the luckiest Jews to have ever
lived, but what we have increases in value when we share it with those who have less.

Disaster Response Team of Wilshire
Boulevard Temple
Ongoing When natural disasters strike, we’re fixed
on the news and want to help. Physical
and financial donations are essential,
but it can’t stop there. That’s why we’re
building a Disaster Response Team—so
we can be on the ground in the days and
weeks after a disaster, responding in a meaningful
way to the needs of those affected!
In the wake of Super Storm Sandy, a small team from
the Temple traveled to New York to aid in the relief
efforts in partnership with NECHAMA. Last spring,
a small group flew to Oklahoma in the aftermath of
the tornados to work with NECHAMA in the cleanup
efforts, and this fall we went to Colorado to help
rebuild flood-damaged homes.

Imagine LA
Ongoing
The highest rung on
Maimonides’ “Ladder of
Tzedakah” is to help the
disadvantaged improve their
own lives by teaching them
how to help themselves.
There are approximately 8,000 homeless families
in Los Angeles, and approximately 8,000 houses of
worship. If each church, synagogue, and mosque
took responsibility for one family, we would end
familial homelessness in our city. Imagine LA (www.
imaginela.org) is based on this simple premise.
Through our partnership with Imagine LA, we
have been matched with Denny, Tristan, and their
daughter, Ezari, who have just moved into transitional
housing. We are mentoring and supporting them as
they become self-sufficient and make the jump into
sustainable housing.
Food Pantries
Every Sunday Siegel Family Patio, 7:45–9:15 a.m. Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC), 503 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica, 9:15 – 11:30 a.m.
Our rabbis teach that when asked in the world to
come “What was your work?” and you answer, “I fed
the hungry,” you will be told “This is the house of
God, enter into it, you who have fed the hungry.” For
more than two decades our Food Pantry has fed the
hungry in our city. Now with locations at the Glazer
Campus and in Santa Monica, it’s easier than ever
to get involved. It’s one thing to make a sandwich or
pack a lunch; it’s another to actually distribute that
lunch to a human being in need. Join us for a few
hours on a Sunday morning and enter the house
of God.
