About SBN
The mission of the Sustainable Business Network
of Greater Philadelphia is to build a just, green, and
thriving economy in the Greater Philadelphia region.
We accomplish this by educating and growing a broad
base of local, independent businesses and educating
policy makers and the public.
The Sustainable Business Network cultivates socially and environmentally
responsible commerce in the Philadelphia region by providing our membership with assessment, education, advocacy and business development
opportunities. SBN works with businesses from startups to older companies
who want to create or maintain organizations that respect their employees,
value the community and protect the earth.
The Sustainable Business Network works with companies who are at many
different phases of the sustainable business continuum: startups up to
approximately three years old who want to insure that their business is
sustainable from the outset; emerging business that are already sustainable
and want to continue to find ways to deepen their contribution to the
community; and successful legacy businesses with little or no socially and
environmentally responsible efforts that seek the optimal path to make
those changes.
How does SBN differ from other business and environmental organizations?
Although the Sustainable Business Network is not a consulting agency, the
organization provides tools for local businesses who want to move in a more
sustainable direction. SBN can bring to light many ways for companies to
become more involved in the sustainability movement and move toward the
goal of creating a sustainable economy.
How do you know that the companies in this directory are sustainable busi
nesses? SBN member companies are required to benchmark their social
and environmental practices by completing the B Survey within one year of
joining SBN. After a year of research, SBN determined that the B Corporation
Survey is the best tool on the market to measure the social and environmental
impact of small businesses. Furthermore, SBN member companies must be
locally-owned and independently held.
SBN is the only organization on Philadelphia’s business scene that brings
leaders together who actively support each other in generating profit while
advocating for employee and business practices that are fair and just, support
their local community, and protect the earth.

Educational Programming Skills-building programs and mentoring for
existing and future entrepreneurs; educational events open to the public
focused on topics related to sustainable business practices; seminars to
educate business owners and concerned consumers about sustainable
business and consumption practices; and networking opportunities for
doing business locally.
Membership Services Membership benefits to the businesses, organizations,
individuals and students who want to be part of our work.
Buy Local Philly A marketing campaign to educate consumers about the
economic benefits of supporting independent businesses.
Green Economy Task Force A coalition of over 400 people and 230 partner
organizations that is working to develop a comprehensive green collar job
strategy for the Philadelphia region to benefit low-income communities and
local businesses.
Emerging Industries Project Business-centered research on industries that
show potential for growth in our region; conducted to optimize investments in
economic development, workforce development, and policy.
Circle of Entrepreneurs Two monthly support group meetings to support and
mentor emerging businesses, meeting in West Philadelphia and Paoli.
Newsletters Monthly e-newsletter of events and resources; a yearly print
directory of sustainable businesses; and an on-line marketplace to enhance
business-to-business and business-to-consumer relationships.
