KEEP A CHILD ALIVE is an urgent response
to the AIDS pandemic ravaging Africa.
With more than 28 million already dead,
the disease continues, wiping out whole
societies, threatening economic
infrastructure and creating tragic
devastation in the family structure.
The seed of Keep a Child Alive (KCA) was sown in Kenya in 2001. Royalties from Leigh Blake’s previous fundraiser, “Red Hot & Blue,” built the AIDS Research
and Family Care Clinic in Mombasa. A woman named Anne walked in to the clinic, desperate to obtain the anti-retroviral drugs her three-year-old son Brine
needed to survive. At the time the medication’s high cost was an impossible dream for most Africans to afford, and Leigh was so moved by this woman and her
courage that she decided to pay for them.
Word of the children’s desperate need for medication spread among Leigh’s friends and colleagues, and soon they were offering to do the same. KCA Director
Peter Edge became its first donor, and soon Alicia Keys’ passion for the issue drove her to become Co-Founder and first Global Ambassador. What started as a very
personal incident between two mothers has become a tremendous initiative for change.

TREATMENT
Anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment has transformed the lives of people with AIDS in the West,
returning them from sickness to health. 100% of the public’s donations go directly to lifesaving AIDS drugs and surrounding care.

nutrition, testing, transportation, and treatment for opportunistic infections are all
necessary for anti-retroviral treatment to be successful.

The Blue Roof Clinic
Just three years ago, the building that houses the Blue Roof Clinic was a nightclub,
notorious in the local community as a place of violence, crime, drugs and alcohol abuse.
With the financial support of co-founder Alicia Keys, Keep a Child Alive transformed the
building into a multi-service AIDS clinic for the 1.5 million people of Wentworth and the
surrounding area of Durban South. Ms. Keys wanted the building to be a symbol of her
love for the people of South Africa, and believed that the Blue Roof Clinic could
resurrect this community so blighted by AIDS, poverty, and marginalization. The Blue
Roof Clinic is now wholly owned and operated by Keep a Child Alive South Africa. KCA-SA
is using the Blue Roof to create a new paradigm of AIDS prevention, treatment and
care: by treating patients in accordance with state-of-the-art medical care, but in the
context of their family and, ultimately, their community.
The Blue Roof Clinic provides a panoply of services and expertise; helping people living
with HIV/AIDS return to the community and become productive members of society. It
currently provides antiretroviral treatment (ART), psychosocial counseling, alcohol and
drug abuse programs, youth programming, nutritional counseling and legal advice.
Future programs planned for the Blue Roof include skills training and development,
micro-finance, physical fitness and a community garden.

Keep a Child Alive’s support for this newly expanded site is not limited to purchasing
drugs; our funding has enabled the clinic staff to scale up their services to meet the
greater needs of the community. Under the brilliant guidance of Medical Director,
Dr. Pasquine Ogunsanya, Alive Medical Services has routinely beat its goals for adding
new patients for treatment. There are currently 906 people on comprehensive HIV/AIDS
treatment, including nutritional support, all laboratory services, treatment for opportunistic
infections, transport, and all general care these patients need.
Alive also offers full VCT services and support, and provides immunizations and general
care to over fifty children per month. As a testament its level of care, Alive Medical
Services was recently selected by the Faculty of Medicine of Makere University, Uganda’s
leading institute of higher education, as a training site in Community-Based Education
and Services for its range of medical students.

The children of the Agape Orphanage in South Africa know adversity, in their region the
infection rate is 41%. Keep a Child Alive also worked with Director Paul Taylor to make
an award-winning documentary film, “We are Together”, out in the US in July 2008 and
showing on HBO in the Fall 2008. Please watch and experience first-hand the lives of
the Agape children as they triumph against unspeakable hardship. For more information
on this beautiful film, visit www.wearetogether.org. The Agape Orphanage is home to
64 orphans, aged 7 to 16 years. After having lost their parents to AIDS or other issues
exacerbated by the disease, founder Zodwa Mqadi took them in and gave them a safe
haven. Yet in a devastating matter of months, an electrical fire destroyed the Agape
Orphanage, leaving the children homeless, left to sleep in a converted shipping container.
With the support of Keep a Child Alive and the Simunye Project, a new Agape Orphanage
is finished. The new facility has adequate space for 64 children. Keep A Child Alive is
working to raise more funds to help the children, while also raising awareness of the
fact that they are just a fraction of the ever-expanding AIDS orphan population in Africa.

Gogo Grannies Outreach Project
Alexandria Township, South Africa
PHRU at Chris Hani
Soweto, South Africa
The PHRU is a leading research unit for clinical trials in adults
and children with HIV. The co-directors and their clinic staff of
ten remain at the forefront of this field in South Africa, and have
made PHRU an internationally recognized leader in HIV/AIDS
research and policy, specifically within the field of mother-to-child
transmission of HIV. Keep a Child Alive provides PHRU an ongoing
“emergency” grant to support 200 children with AIDS in need of
immediate treatment and care until they are able to access services
from the local Department of Health, frequently a dangerously
long process. KCA is committed to providing emergency treatment
to 200 children through PHRU for as long as the need for a
stopgap exists.
Outside Johannesburg, the circle of life has been turned on its
head. Older women watch as their adult children die of AIDS, and
then are left to raise their grandchildren, sometimes as many
as ten, on their own. On a trip to South Africa, Keep a Child Alive
met a group of these wonderful grandmothers who were providing
support to each other through the most difficult experiences of
their lives. Inspired by the incredible resilience of these “Gogos”
(“Gogo” means “grandmother” in Zulu) KCA funds the Gogo
Granny Outreach Project. Every quarter the grannies receive a
grant that can be used to provide the essential things that their
grandchildren need, such as shoes and school uniforms. More
than thirty grannies are now involved in the project, and several
are traveling throughout their province, offering workshops to other
grandmothers who need the tools to start their own support groups.
Icyuzuzo Clinic
Kigali, Rwanda
The strong commitment of the government here has led to increased
resources targeted to treatment, education and prevention of HIV/
AIDS. There remain significant obstacles to treatment, however,
and the horrific consequences of the 1994 genocide have led to
the further impoverishment of its already poor people, the
massive loss of health professionals, and the collapse of health
infrastructure. In 2005 there were only 2 doctors per every
100,000 people in this country, with extremely limited access to
necessary resources to combat HIV. Meanwhile, many of those
infected during the 1994 genocide—especially women who
were the victims of rape—are now suffering from AIDS. Keep a
Child Alive, in partnership with WE-ACTx, (the Women’s Equity
in Access to Care and Treatment) is determined to confront the
obstacles preventing women and children from receiving ART by
funding the scale-up of the Icyuzuzo Clinic. The Icyuzuzo Clinic
now provides medical care to over 3,000 women and children,
most of whom are victims of the genocide.
the Family Care Clinic
Mombasa, Kenya
Hope Clinic
Sikoro, Mali
This “clinic within a clinic” is set in the village of Sikoro, an
impoverished area outside of Bamako, Mali. Because of the support
of Keep a Child Alive’s and other backers in 2007, the Hope Clinic,
the first “village HIV clinic” in all of Mali, is nearly complete,
100 HIV patients are in care, and crucial social assistance
programs—nutritional assistance and microfinance programs—
have been added.� In the words of the Hope Clinic’s overseer,
Dr. Anne De Groot, “The most effective adherence intervention is
food assistance, and the most effective de-stigmatizer
is micro-finance.”

The town of Mombasa is a major port for Eastern Africa and is
Kenya’s oldest and second largest city. A rich and colorful history
and beautiful beaches drive Mombasa’s tourism industry, yet
the majority of its citizens live in abject poverty. Here is not a
place one would expect to find a center of medical excellence for
pediatric AIDS treatment. Through the vision and determination
of Leigh Blake and Dr. Shaffiq Essajee of NYU Medical Center a
pilot program was established at Mombasa’s largest government
hospital which today provides state-of-the-art medical and support services to children and families living with HIV. Known as
the “Mombasa Model”, the success of the program at the Family
Care Clinic—the first Keep a Child Alive site—helped demonstrate to the world that keeping a child alive is not only a moral
imperative, but entirely feasible. KCA continues to fund ART,
nutrition, and other expansion at the Family Care Clinic, including
a child-friendly waiting room for patients and their families.

orphan and child care projects
Nyamila Community Care Center
Siaya, Kenya
Chandrakal Orphanage
Chandrakal, India
The orphan population is growing to epidemic proportions
in India. Current estimates state that over 1 million children
under age 15 have lost one or more parent to AIDS. 53% of these
children are abused either by family members of people in the
community. In response to this urgent and growing need, Keep a
Child Alive is working in partnership with Living India to build an
orphanage in the rural Chandrakal area, beyond the capital city
of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. The orphanage is being built on
10 acres of land near the Chandrakal Hospital.
The fundamental aim of this center is to provide care and support
to the large number of AIDS orphans in this rural community.
The project has two goals: the short-term goal is to address the
immediate needs of the community’s orphans and vulnerable
children; the long-term goal is to strengthen the capacity of
families to protect and care for them, as well as providing support
for caregivers through improving their economic capacities. The
project will transport the children to local hospital and clinic
facilities that provide AIDS care, and give them a safe environment
where they can learn, be loved and receive an education.
Ikageng Itireleng AIDS Ministry
Soweto, South Africa
According to current estimates, there are 660,000 (and rising)
South African children who have been orphaned by AIDS. Mama
Carol, of Ikageng Itireleng AIDS Ministry, oversees the care of
over 1,000 children in 225 homes throughout Soweto. All of these
children live in child-headed households, and have seen firsthand
the true devastation of AIDS. Ikageng provides mentoring, life
skills, and counseling to help children in these child-headed
households grow into well-developed adults who can contribute
to their communities. Siblings continue to live together in their
homes, creating strong sibling solidarity and promoting the family
unit and structure. Through the provision of basic needs such
as food, clothing, transportation, water, electricity, school fees,
healthcare and transport, Ikageng relieves some of the pressure
and despair faced by these young children, who, having lost their
parents, must take on adult roles.
Boikarabelo
Johannesburg, South Africa
Located just down the road from the archaeological site known as
“The Cradle of Humanity,” an hours plus drive from Johannesburg,
is Boikarabelo. Part eco-village, school, HIV/AIDS counseling
center, ambulance, trauma counseling center and food pantry,
Boikarabelo is all acceptance and heart,and since 1990, has
been a haven for South Africa’s AIDS orphans, economic orphans
and socially-abused children. Surviving family members and
neighbors often accompany the children; they are also welcomed.
Using the traditional African village (and its inherent ubuntu
values of cooperation and joint responsibility) as a model, the
community works together to break the cycle of poverty and bring
hope, safety, education and sustainable growth to all Boikarabelo
residents. KCA visited Boikarabelo, and its determined and
patient founders and resident “parents,” Con and Marion Cloete,
for the first time during its recent journey to South Africa. Based
on this visit, KCA decided to fund Boikarabelo’s HIV/AIDS work,
necessities to properly care for their resident infants and children, transport to the local hospital for medical care, and food
costs for 2008.

bobbi bear
Durban, South Africa
Bobbi Bear provides a non-threatening means for child victims of
sexual abuse to quickly communicate the nature of their abuse
and have a strong chance of bringing their violators to justice.
In Kwa-zulu-Natal, where the HIV-infection rate stands at 40%,
timely and accurate information gathering could be life-saving;
appropriate HIV and AIDS intervention must be applied within
72-hours of HIV exposure. Bobbi Bear is committed to facilitating
this care.

Welcome to Keep a Child Alive’s Annual Report for 2007
We’ve come a long way since two mothers set up a shop in Brooklyn. What began
as a tiny charity has bloomed into an organization respected for rewriting the
script on how charities communicate with the public. Our mission is to provide
fast access to AIDS treatment and high quality care through extensive
surrounding services. We empower community-based organizations that are
out of the purview of large-scale organizations such as the Global Fund
and PEPFAR. We fill the gap.
We have also expanded to orphan care, a necessary component for Keep a
Child Alive. It is estimated there will be 25 million AIDS orphans by the end of
2010, a devastating number to all of us who care about the children.
Imagine becoming infected with HIV through a casual experience, or worse, by
your spouse. Then innocently infecting your baby. Imagine that you have heard
that life-saving AIDS drugs are available to the wealthy in your country and
not to you. Imagine the unbearable pain of watching your child die unnecessarily.
These dreadful tragedies are repeated minute after minute, day after day, for
the people of Africa.
Keep a Child Alive believes that all human beings deserve justice and dignity.
We believe in the strength and resilience of the African people. We believe that
children should be allowed to grow and flourish and play under the proud gaze
of their parents, who must be kept alive to nourish them.
As an organization we are small, woman-run, committed to our patients, and

CURRENT CAMPAIGNS
During the spring of 2006 Alicia Keys
embarked on a journey to Africa that
changed her life forever. During her
month-long trip Alicia witnessed
countless stories of people infected
with HIV, who despite the odds, were
overcoming personal hardships
with astonishing bravery. Some
of the communities that Alicia
visited on her pilgrimage had an
HIV prevalence rate of over 40%,
but what she encountered were
incredible accounts of resilience
and triumph. Join Alicia on her
journey and hear the compelling
stories from those she encountered
during her visit, making her ever
more galvanized in her commitment
to publicly addressing the need for
lifesaving drugs and ongoing care
for these inspiring people.

who spent countless hours making
this film a reality. Your devotion and
talent made it all possible.
Keep a Child Alive has once again
broke the mold in donor campaigns
and has become one of the first
charities in America to introduce
donations by texting. KCA can
be supported by sending the text
message “ALIVE” to 90999. The
same campaign, using a different
number, was formed in England
in March of 2008. Alicia Keys
announced her Text Alive initiative at
each concert of her current U.S. and
U.K. tour for the album “As I Am.”
The initiative allows Keep A Child
Alive supporters to save a life with
their cell phone. The slogan “Give
five – text ‘ALIVE’ to 90999”
is supported by postcards, posters
and an on-line widget built for
the campaign.
