In addition, the Fitness Center in Falcon Hall was
dedicated for Professor Emeritus Phil Arnold, a longtime faculty member and chair of the Recreation
Leadership Program. Foundation Board member Amy
Sherman and her husband Jim Page provided the lead
gift for the fitness center. Amy and Jim felt strongly
about Phil's positive influence and community leadership so they asked that their gift to the College be
used to name the Fitness Center to recognize him.
College founder Martha Reifler Myers was remembered with the naming of the Library Entrance Gallery in her honor. Martha Reifler was the leader of a
group of visionaries who fought for the establishment
of DCC in the early 1950s. Sadly, Martha passed
away June 3, 2006. We will miss this wonderful lady
who never gave up on her dream of starting a community college in Dutchess County.
College
President
T
here is a saying in the public college realm
that no public college ever became great depending just on public funds. That statement
is true at DCC as well. Being able to offer over 100
scholarships, faculty/staff mini-grants, endowed
faculty chairs, and other enhancements have helped
Dutchess Community College become one of the best
community colleges in New York and in the country.
Your continued commitment to the mission of the
College and purposes for which the Foundation was
established are very much appreciated.
The three naming opportunities above demonstrate
the important support we receive from so many members of our community. I would like to thank all of
you for your support, and I would like you to know
that the gifts you entrust to the Foundation will have
long lasting impacts on the students of Dutchess Community College.
One of the highlights of the spring 2006 semester was
the dedication of the theatre in Dutchess Hall in honor
of the College's first president, Dr. James F. Hall and
his wife Betty. A major gift to the Foundation by
Professor Emeritus June Roush Pierson made
possible the naming of The James and Betty Hall
Theatre to provide permanent, visible recognition
of the Hall's unique contributions to the College.
It was a very moving ceremony, attended by numerous community leaders, faculty who had worked
under Jim, and his secretary, Bea Sheffield, who was
also the first employee of the College. Professor
Pierson taught at DCC for forty years before her
retirement in 2003.

to the College to be added to the technology endowment. At the end of the five year period this fund will
have a total of $1 million.
DCCF Chairman
Beside the many scholarships we administer yearly,
we continue to give money for grants to faculty and
staff, equipment and other campus improvements.
These areas of funding are quite important since the
foundation's support is, in some cases, the only source
of funding for the projects.
T
he Foundation Board is very proud of what
we are able to offer the students, faculty and
staff of Dutchess Community College.
Through our scholarship and mini-grant programs we
help make a difference in people's lives. This doesn't
happen without the hard work of a great Board of
Directors. Every year through their work and guidance we continue to exceed our goals and expectations. As of year-end, as you will see in this report,
we have increased our endowment to exceed $4.4
million dollars.
I want to especially thank the Foundations staff and
our Executive Director, Patricia Prunty, for her hard
work and leadership this past year, which has been
such a great success. We could not do any of our
work without the complete support of Dr. D. David
Conklin, our College President, to whom we owe special thanks. Finally, but not least, thank you to our
board members, for your financial support, time and
tireless dedication, which allow us to be the very successful foundation we are.
We are very proud that the Foundation awards a fullscholarship to attend DCC for all Dutchess County
High School graduates that place in the top 10% of
their graduating class. This is not a competition it is a
scholarship fund that is there for all to use. Many of
our students find this scholarship to be a great way to
start their college careers and then upon graduation
transfer to some of the best colleges in the country.
We extend a special thanks to the Conklin Family for
funding this program.
The needs of our students, faculty and our campus
will never end and I hope we can continue to count
on your support and participation in our programs and
events. Dutchess Community College is a fantastic
asset for Dutchess County and the Hudson Valley. It
is essential we continue to raise the money needed to
ensure the strong future of our College.
Our student campaign has raised $263,000 from the
student body that will fund a technology endowment.
The student money leveraged a Title III grant from
the Federal Government that will bring over $300,000

t is with great pleasure that I present the Dutchess Community College 20052006 Annual Report. I've been involved in fundraising for over 20 years. It's an
interesting field that is far more about building relationships for your organization
than it is about asking for money. This concept may seem funny to you but it's true.
As people learn about Dutchess Community College (DCC) they become committed to the mission of the College and to all of the wonderful things it has done for our
quality of life in the Hudson Valley.
People who see the important role the College plays in our community want to
support it. Committed donors and their belief in our mission have changed and
improved the College from the many scholarships we provide to naming buildings in
their honor. DCC reaches deep into the Hudson Valley. It's rare to find a local
family that hasn't had one member take a class, attend a summer camp or come to
a workshop.
The Foundation is the fundraising arm of the College and we have been fortunate to
have many committed donors. Last year we awarded $247,000 in scholarships and
$35,000 in faculty/staff mini-grants. I hope you will respond positively and enthusiastically to our appeals throughout the year. After all, DCC is your College, a resource
to benefit the entire Hudson Valley.

A Soldier's Life
M
ichael Oremus, a Highland resident, was a former Dutchess Community
College Student in the Fall of 2004. He majored in Adolescent Education,
was on the Soccer Team and enjoyed history. He left DCC to fight for our country.
He served with the 57th Military Police Company, 8th Military Police Brigade, out of
Seoul, South Korea. On October 2, 2006, at the age of 21, Michael was killed by
a sniper in Baghdad. This young hopeful life was taken away only three months
into a yearlong deployment in Iraq.
Dutchess Community College would like to express its support and condolences to
his family and friends. There are so many young men and women that have served
and died for our country and I am sure the Iraq War has touched each and every one
of us in some way.
Punkin' Chunkin
The Arlington High School team
took the top prize at Dutchess
Community College's Ninth Annual
Punkin' Chunkin' held Sunday, October 22
at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds. The team
scored 345 points with its floating arm trebuchet
named the Arlington Assassin in a pumpkin hurling
competition where accuracy counted above all else.
Students built the machine in their Principles of Engineering class, coached by teacher Dan Listemann.
DCC's Punkin' Chunkin' Competition provides students in physics, engineering, and technology classes
and clubs the opportunity to design, build, and operate a sophisticated mechanical device, usually something that harkens back to the siege engines of Medieval warfare. The machines must be able to be armed and loaded with no
more than two students working together. Accuracy and strategy, rather than brute force, are the most important factors. In
fact, any shot longer than 400 feet is disqualified for safety reasons.
With the emphasis on accuracy rather than power, most teams brought scaled down and streamlined machines to the 2006
competition. Variations on the trebuchet, which includes an arm that whips around and flings the pumpkin, remained the most
popular entry, but DCC brought a sling-shot design this year, and UCCC brought a traditional catapult.
Arlington's floating arm trebuchet included an important innovation, according to engineering student Nick Ugarte. "For a
counter weight, we used springs - the biggest, baddest garage door springs we could find." Beyond mechanics, the project took
teamwork and commitment. "We created this by working hard," Ugarte said. "We didn't have a life for three weeks. We stayed
after every day until 7:00 p.m. We also wouldn't have gotten any of this done if Mr. Listemann hadn't sacrificed his time for us."
The Punkin' Chunkin' is coordinated by DCC's Assistant Professor and Engineering Program Chair Mark Courtney and DCC
Architecture Instructor Paul Newsome, whose architecture class designed and built the targets. The event received financial
and in-kind support from the Dutchess County Fair. DCC was able to provide $200 grants to competing teams to help teams
buy building materials and pumpkins, and provide transportation.

Festifall 2006
Special thanks to all of our donors:
"Going once, going twice, SOLD…" and what a
wonderful success the Fourth Annual Benefit Auction
"Festifall" 2006 was. The atmosphere was very festive with
all of the beautiful chrysanthemums, pumpkins
and autumnal flair adding to the picturesque setting
at Dutchess Golf and Country Club. We have been
hearing wonderful comments and we are very pleased with
the outcome of the festivities.
Hudson Valley Balloon Adventures
The event was held on October 6th and raised an
upwards of $50,000 and drew together over 100 Alumni
and friends of Dutchess Community College. The
proceeds raised benefit student
scholarships, faculty/staff minigrants, and other educational
enhancements for our campus.
We could not have done
it without the support provided
by our donors, participants, and
volunteers. Rob and Sue Doyle
of Absolute Auction and Realty
made the evening fun and eventful with their auctioneering. The
dinner journals were provided by
Bill Grogg and Net Pub. Our co-chairs, Amy Sherman and
Patti Zakow did a wonderful job.
The items donated were magnificent, with a wide range of
unique items such as a circa 1920 hand-stitched quilt, handcrafted solid cherry secretary's desk and solid oak baby
cradle, gift certificates to area restaurants accompanied by
tickets to local performances, sporting events and even an
oceanfront week in Virginia Beach.

35th Annual Holiday Craft Fair
Thanksgiving Weekend
Holiday shoppers found unique, one-of-a-kind gifts at the Dutchess
Community College Foundation's 35th Annual Holiday Craft Fair on
Saturday and Sunday, November 25 and 26. The fair was held in
Falcon and Drumlin Halls at DCC's main campus in Poughkeepsie; hours were 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days
with special consideration given to shoppers with disabilities, allowing them to enter at 9:30 a.m.
The weather was delightful and it couldn't have been a more perfect weekend for the event. Although many people
enjoyed walking, the Dutchess County Trolley was offered free of charge for transportation between both buildings
and the parking lots.
The DCC Foundation Holiday Craft Fair is a juried show that draws over 3000
visitors each year for original, hand-crafted items by more than 100 artisans
and specialty food makers. Most are vendors from the Hudson Valley region,
but many are traveling from across New York State,
Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and
New Jersey.
Items for sale included fiber arts, fabrics, and clothing; candles, soaps and oils, decorative painting and
fine arts; dolls, toys, and collectibles; ceramics and
porcelain; plus jewelry, floral arrangements, and works in glass, leather, metal, photography, and wood. Door prizes were donated by the vendors and the proceeds benefit
student scholarships.
Thank You!
The Foundation would like to extend a heart felt thank you to all of our volunteers and
the people behind the scenes that have helped make our events possible.

Planned Giving
Donor Advantages Offered By New IRA Laws
The Pension Protection Act of 2006, H.R. 4, is good news for many donors who can afford to make charitable

Dutchess Community College Foundation. There are several key points you should be aware in order to qualify
for this benefit, they are as follows:
n
n
n
n
n
This benefit is in effect until December 31, 2007, which is when the gift must be received by.
Gift amount cannot exceed $100,000.
Donor's age must be 70 ½ or older at the time of their gift.
Gifts must be made through a direct transfer from your IRA Administrator directly to the charity.
Amounts withdrawn from an IRA account are removed from the donor's taxable estate. They are not
