Updates from Sunnyvale City Hall
New Businesses Opening Through City Microenterprise Program
Last year, the Sunnyvale City Council awarded NOVA a
$127,000 grant through the Community Development Block Grant
(CDBG) program, the first grant of its kind for NOVA, to provide technical assistance and seed money to help unemployed workers launch
entrepreneurial small business ventures. These individuals must either
reside in Sunnyvale or wish to launch a small business in Sunnyvale.
One company that received a grant, ZOONI www.zoonileathers.com,
held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to announce its grand opening. This
grant helped to fund materials to launch this new business that has
resulted in the creation of four new jobs in Sunnyvale. Mayor Melinda
Hamilton for attended this event. A total of seven grants were awarded
through this program (with an eighth in final negotiations) to new
businesses in Sunnyvale that included leather apparel, taxi service,
business consulting, fitness classes, spa treatments, graphic design,
childcare center and a bakery, and the creation of many new jobs. In
addition, NOVA, in partnership with the Small Business Administration, SCORE, Foothill College Entrepreneur Center, the Women’s
Initiative, AnewAmerica and the Housing Division of the City, provided entrepreneur orientations and resource materials to 126 individuals interested in starting or expanding their own business, including a

A pacemaker that regulates the heart by wirelessly zapping it with pulses of ultrasound from outside the organ
is currently undergoing human trials in Europe. Conventional pacemakers stimulate the heart tissue via electrical leads that are fed into the heart through a vein. But
leads can fail, requiring additional surgery to remove and
replace them. The conventional approach also restricts
where the therapeutic shock can be delivered. The new
device uses focused acoustic waves that are picked up
by a small receiver implanted permanently inside the
heart, converting the energy into electricity. Unlike radio
waves, ultrasound can pass through tissue at high-enough
energy levels without causing any heating. “This represents a significant breakthrough, eliminating the lead
in the heart,” says Paul Skjefte, marketing strategist for
EBR Systems, the company that created the pacemaker.
The startup, based in Sunnyvale, California, was spun
out of research by founder Debra Echt, a former professor
of medicine and a cardiologist at Vanderbilt University.
The new device, called the wireless cardiac stimulation
system, works like an RFID tag in that the receiver has
no power supply of its own, and instead gets all its power
and signal wirelessly, but with ultrasound instead of radio
waves.
Plastic bag bans are making headlines in California
again this week, with two more cities passing ordinances
to restrict plastic shopping bags and San Francisco considering strengthening its existing legislation. In the heart
of Silicon Valley, Sunnyvale will ban plastic bags, beginning next June, in large grocery stores and retailers, while
exempting restaurants and nonprofit organizations, the
San Jose Mercury News reports. To encourage customers
to bring their own reusable bags on their shopping trips,
stores will charge 10 cents per paper bag distributed – a
Page 5
a fee that will increase to 25 cents in 2014. The city expects the new regulations to reduce plastic bag use within
the jurisdiction by 95 percent, from 75.2 million bags a
year to 3.8 million, according to advocacy group Californians Against Waste.

$49.99 after a $50 rebate and with a 24-month contract,
the companies said in a statement. The device is scheduled
to be unveiled at a media event in New York and will be
available Jan. 11. Nokia, under Chief Executive Officer
Stephen Elop, is remaking its smartphone business around
the Windows Phone operating system after losing market
share to Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone and devices that use

will introduce Windows Phones with “multiple carriers” in
the U.S., Elop said in an interview last month.
A new application for Apple Inc.’s iPhone updates users’
credit scores from Experian Plc once a month, in addition to details about how much of their available credit
they’re using and their home value, according to a release
by Credit Sesame Inc., which also provides free scores
through its website. “If you’re trying to rent an apartment
and the landlord or agent wants to know about your credit,
you can go through our mobile app and quickly pull your
information and say, ‘Here’s what my credit looks like,’”
said Adrian Nazari, founder and chief executive officer of
Sunnyvale, California-based Credit Sesame.

Sonic.net is a full-service Internet provider,
dedicated to delivering fast, reliable and inexpensive
connectivity while providing award-winning technical
support.
Sonic.net continues to offer broadband plans
without data caps and recently dropped its speed limits,
meaning all connections now run as fast as the pipes
allow for the same price. Perhaps more interestingly,
the company is gearing up to vastly accelerate those
speeds in certain areas, to levels far higher than what’s
generally available in the region today.
Sonic now offers a standard broadband service
throughout much of the Bay Area featuring download
speeds of up to 20 megabits per second, along with
aflatratephoneline,for$39.95permonth.Itshighlevel service includes two lines and speeds of up to 40
Mbps for $69.95.

Enjoy True Spirit every day. “Live life your way”,
is the gift I learned from Kanaya, my Siberian
Husky. His name meant “True Spirit”and is the
inspiration behind True Spirit Pet Photography.
Enjoying and documenting our walks throughout
his 12 years and striving to live by the most important thing Kanaya taught me; When you promise
something…mean it. Whether it is a truck ride, a
pig ear, or a walk. Walk the talk. And that goes for
everything in life. Trained in pet photography. I am
honored to document your pet, your walks, your
stories, your true spirit.
