homes. For example, Craftsman-style
touches, including the built-ins that
flank the family room’s fireplace, bring
the past into the present. The floor

lifestyles, has clean lines and enhances
the solid architectural framework.

Link Rooms With Color
Mary Margarett’s accent color scheme
was inspired by the rich gold-andblue fabric seen on the family room’s
sofa pillows. A sofa and chair from
Storehouse, upholstered in a highperformance synthetic suede, add
contemporary pizzazz. Simple blue
window panels coordinate with the pillows and rug. Woven shades allow the
homeowner to control natural light
without pulling closed the panels. Textural elements such as the side chairs
and limestone-and-iron coffee table
create depth and warmth.
Parkview
A wraparound porch with skyline views
is just one way this home combines big-city allure
with a relaxed and comfortable style.
Mod Meets Classic
Family Room
I
In every city across the South, space is
a big issue—and we aren’t just talking
about square footage. The space between suburbia (where a lot of people
live) and city center (where most people work) has grown so fast that many
families are moving back to urban
neighborhoods, trading cul-de-sacs
and two-hour commutes for a town
house and a grocery store up the block.
Inspired by this trend, Parkview, our
Georgia Idea House, aims to redefine
city living in the South. It’s located in
Glenwood Park, a new 28-acre community just a couple of miles from
downtown Atlanta. Visit the area, and
you may be surprised to see that Glenwood Park is not a jumble of loft apartments landscaped with concrete and
asphalt. It is actually an environmentally friendly neighborhood made up
of ambling sidewalks, parks, nearby
shops, and a mix of home styles—
from quaint condos to three-story

brick homes, all built with recycled
materials and energy-efficient designs.
Green Street Properties, the developer of Glenwood Park, also planted
more than 1,000 trees on this former
industrial site in an effort to revive the
landscape. After all, that’s what every
homeowner wants—to be surrounded
by picturesque lawns; blooming flowerbeds; and pretty fences, picket or otherwise. Glenwood Park just proves
that you don’t have to live in the suburbs to have it. The community has
a growing landscape, and so does
Parkview, even on a lot not intended
for much yard. Landscape architects
The family room showcases contemporary art from Fay Gold Gallery, sleek
metallic lamps from Circa Lighting,
and simple silk draperies from The
Curtain Exchange. These items bring
modernity to a setting framed with the
most traditional of interior elements—
an antique rug from Nomadic Arts.

made the most of the exteriors, adding
foliage in every available space around
the house. For color, pots of pretty
flowers are staggered on the front
porch steps. More blooms punctuate
the courtyard and porches. The design
is a wonderful complement to a house
that faces the community greenspace.
Not only does Glenwood Park resemble an established neighborhood,
but the home’s architecture reflects
history as well. Jim Strickland and the
design team at Historical Concepts—
a Peachtree City, Georgia, architectural design firm known for creating
homes that embrace classic styles—
designed a house that looks as if it’s
been on the block for years. With a
facade of blond brick and a deep wraparound porch, Parkview resembles one
of the many houses found in old Southern downtowns. Between the masterful design of Historical Concepts and
the ability of Whitehall Homes to construct these details, Parkview can’t
help but age gracefully.
Cozy and Inviting
For the interiors, Mary Margarett
Nevin of Nevin Interior Design contrasts the Idea House’s old-fashioned
character with cutting-edge style. In
spaces such as the family room, sleek
and sophisticated elements including
the chandelier, contemporary artwork
and furniture, and a simple color
scheme highlight the home’s timeless
building elements. The floor plan is
open so that conversation can flow
effortlessly and guests can easily move
from the family room to the kitchen
and dining room.

Maximize Storage Options
Function is so important in a house,
especially in the kitchen, where every
square inch should be useful. The pullout storage racks on either side of the
cooktop exemplify good design in unexpected places.
Easy on the Environment
Every home needs to be equipped for
recycling, but especially one built in a
community constructed with recyclable and reusable materials. Glass,
metal, paper, and plastic are presorted
into trash bins hidden in a deep drawer in the island.
Perfect for a Chef
Today, Electrolux offers an unmatched
selection of refrigerators, ovens, and
cooktops to help you streamline your
cooking routine. From the kitchen
novice to pros who can sauté in their
sleep, cooks will appreciate thoughtfully designed details such as SmoothGlideTM oven racks that slide effortlessly on ball bearings. Electrolux understands the details that go into making a user-friendly kitchen, which is
why this house features Electrolux
ICONTM appliances.

Dining Room
The dining room is the perfect example of eclectic style. Mary Margarett
paired a traditional heirloom rug and a
set of antique chairs with a modern
square table and leather chairs. The
glass chandelier and lamps punctuate
the setting with sophistication. A door
to the front porch and a wall of windows allow plenty of sunlight to spill

into the compact space.
Turn a Hallway Into a Gallery
Versatile storage is essential in a
home. The hallway leading to the master bedroom becomes a gallery, complete with a row of bookcases and
custom cabinets, enabling the homeowners to store and display their favorite things.
High-Style Suite
The hottest thing in bedrooms right
now is having a cool color scheme. By
cool, we mean soft, calm tones such
as blues and greens. For this master
bedroom, a rich sea blue is paired with
cream. As an alternative to a headboard, Mary Margarett upholstered the
lower wall behind the bed with a blueand-cream herringbone Sunbrella fabric edged with silver nail heads.
Leather benches and antique bedside
tables provide contrast.
Master Bath
Master Bedroom
Soothing Spot To Soak
Don’t Forget Doors
The master bedroom’s soft palette is
carried into the bath. Creamy marble
tiles provide a textured look on the
floor while mosaic tiles line the walkin shower. A bubble bath in the freestanding tub from Cheviot is the
perfect respite after a long day. The
private water closet sits at the end of
the main space. Separate vanities and
wood-framed mirrors are painted a
mushroom hue in keeping with the
muted floor, walls, and accessories.
JELD-WEN Interior Doors offer numerous designs, from custom-carved
to molded, making them ideal for any
type of architecture. The Rockport series used in Parkview features horizontal panels, a nice detail for a home
with historical elements. Interior doors
include a five-year limited warranty.

Let the Sun Shine In
Pella Windows & Doors manufactures
quality products that offer something
for every budget.
In Parkview, argon-filled, doublepane windows from the Architect
Series are twice as energy-efficient
as regular double panes, a nod to
this house’s environmentally friendly
goals. The windows help keep energy
costs down, too, so you can pull up
the shades and enjoy sunlight without
paying a hefty power bill.

Adding Softness
Fresh Ways With Fabric
Few design elements warm up a room
and add personal style more than plush
carpet. Not only do floor coverings
need to look pretty, but they also need
to feel good underfoot. Mohawk Industries offers both with soft, durable,
and luxurious carpets in a variety of
colors and designs for any room, including the ones in Parkview. The
Wunda Weve patterned loop-cut-loop
carpets, such as that used in the master bedroom, stand as one of the
hottest trends in decorating today.
Whether you’re upholstering sofas and
chairs or creating curtains and pillows,
Sunbrella fabrics make a great choice
because they are fade-resistant and
easy to clean. In the master bedroom
at Parkview, durable Sunbrella fabric
is used for a unique headboard wall
behind the bed and a coordinating bed
skirt. In the guest room upstairs (see
page 64), more Sunbrella fabric is
hung on a rod to frame the bed, giving
a stylish look with high-performance
wearability.
Year-round Comfort Inside
There’s no substitute for the efficient,
reliable, and quiet systems from
Lennox. The Dave Lennox Signature
Collection provides the quietest and
most efficient air conditioner and
furnace available. Keeping cool in the
South can be challenging, so we
looked to Lennox for help. At all three
Idea Houses, these systems keep each
room fresh and free of pollutants. ©

supplemental curtain air bags for sideimpact and rollover on all three rows.
Active head restraints are standard for
the driver and front passenger.
Outdoor spaces completely integrate
this home with the surrounding environment. In the back courtyard,
General Shale Brick pavers provide
a natural complement to the lightercolored brick exterior. With doors
leading to the mudroom on one side
and the master bedroom on the other,
the courtyard serves as a retreat for
late-afternoon naps or early-morning
coffee breaks. Landscape architect Bill
Caldwell of Franklin/Caldwell + Associates, Inc., even included a fountain
in the design as a focal point.
On the Outside
Old houses did not necessarily have
asphalt shingles. So the design team
took a look back at historical designs
and decided that Metalworks® steel
shingles by Tamko, a member of the
Metal Roofing Alliance, would be appropriate. The material has the aged
appeal that complements this house.
Warm Up
Make the Most of a Small Yard
Outdoor settings are important in the
South. Whether you want to entertain
groups of friends on the porch in the
evening or rise early to enjoy the sunrise, a comfortable seating area is a
porch necessity. An area in one corner
Although Parkview doesn’t boast a
large yard, Bill created a setting perfectly suited for the site. Trees, shrubs,
and flowering plants enhance the exterior. The design incorporates selections that are perfect for gardeners and
those who don’t want a lot of upkeep.

Front Porch
of Parkview’s front porch is ideal for
one-on-one conversation, while the
table and chairs at the front of the
space allows a gathering of friends to
enjoy food and wine.
Although plenty of fantastic outdoor spaces abound at this house, the
spacious front porch is the only one
that includes an outdoor fireplace,
making the area suitable for yearround entertaining.
Durable Underfoot
Resistant to insects and weathering,
Trex decking products provide the rich
look of real wood without all the maintenance. This environmentally friendly
building material, made mostly from
recycled plastics and reclaimed wood,
provides a nonslip, non-splintering
surface. It’s used on many of the outside spaces at our Georgia Idea House.
Building in Style
No matter where you decide to construct your dream home, General
Shale Brick can help with a selection
of traditional and contemporary bricks
in every kind of texture—from both
rough and tumbled finishes to an Early
American style. Parkview is built with

includes extra-tall cabinets from Plain
& Fancy Cabinetry on both walls. The
front-loading washer and dryer use
less water than traditional machines—
another energy-efficient element in
this house. The design of the washer
and dryer also makes loading and unloading a breeze. The space-saving
ironing board pulls out of a drawer.
Laundry Room
conceal the mess. At Parkview, the design team anticipated this situation.
The Container Store installed a super
storage system in the garage closet,
instead of having a pantry in the
kitchen. Simply unload goods, such as
Viva paper towels, Scott tissue, and
Kleenex, and nonperishable groceries
directly onto a designated shelf. You’ll
know where your supplies are the

minute you need them.
Mudroom
Drop Off Your Stuff
The mudroom serves many purposes.
It’s not only a great place to leave dirty
shoes and backpacks, but the tall cabinets in the room are also convenient
for keeping dog leashes and sports
gear out of the way. Drawers beneath
the cabinets offer out-of-sight storage.
On the wall behind the bench seat, a
row of hooks neatly holds jackets and
umbrellas.
Pretty Surfaces
The laundry room in this Idea House
features a new version of DuPont
Corian countertop that looks exactly
like concrete. The surface lends a
contemporary edge to the utilitarian
space. In other rooms at Parkview,
such as the kitchen, countertops glisten with the beauty of DuPont Zodiaq,
a premium quartz surface that boasts
the radiance of quartz crystal and the
strength of natural stone. With many
colors available, there is a DuPont Surface that’s just right for your home.
Drama in the Bath
Rich, dark colors and a mix of materials merge in this powder room, located
just off the mudroom. Mary Margarett
selected a stone basin for use on a solidwood countertop. Simple sconces contribute to the sophisticated setting.

For the children’s room, Mary Margarett created a space that is fresh,
bright, and oh-so-comfortable. Twin
beds are framed by a single custom
headboard covered in soft, highperformance Sunbrella fabric. The
bedside table is découpaged in sheet
music and was custom-made by artist
Becky Fern of Simply Cracked. Colorful Martex sheets add a fresh punch
to the otherwise neutral coverlets and
bed skirts.

Parkview. With thousands of shades
from which to choose and a Web site
that can help you plan for painting
projects big or small, The SherwinWilliams Company can help you
spruce up your home. Nothing freshens up a room like bright, smudgefree walls.
Simple and Pretty Bath

This Space Sparkles
Guest Room
Frame a Bed With Fabric
Mary Margarett wanted a dramatic but
comfortable look for the guest room.
Paired with a platform bed from
Storehouse, the custom drapery panel
crafted from Sunbrella fabric hangs
behind the bed to soften the space
between the large windows. Woven
wood shades from the Hunter Douglas
Exotic Collection add relaxed texture
and warmth.
In the guest bath, a mosaic of earthtone tiles from Walker Zanger enhances the cream-colored cabinets and
countertops. Simple elements such as
small potted plants and chrome accessories keep this bath stylish.
The mosaic tiles were used for the
tub surround and as accent elements
on the floor. Sheets of mosaic tile are
easily cut and divided for use as
insets in large tile schemes such as
this one. It’s a great idea for adding
a bit of color without incurring a lot
of expense.
Restful Hideaway
The sleeping porch is located off the
guest room so visitors get a living
room of their own while homeowners
can come and go freely downstairs
without disturbing them. Custommade shutters keep the space private
but can be opened up to allow in
fresh breezes.
Various handmade elements abound
throughout Parkview’s interiors. Here,
artist Becky Fern of Simply Cracked
created a coffee table that adds just a
touch of whimsy to the contemporary,
tropical-inspired outdoor furnishings
on the sleeping porch.
Soft and Comfy
No bedroom is complete without
durable linens. That’s exactly why we
selected Martex linens and towels
for this Idea House. The ones shown
above make a dramatic statement in
the guest room and ensure comfortable
slumber for overnight visitors. Another
great feature of the bedding in this
room is that it is reversible. Now
you can change the room’s look with
minimal effort.

No modern home in the middle of a
city would be complete without a
comfortable media room. At Parkview,
the developers made sure the wiring
and computer components used in this
third-floor room were the newest available. Mary Margarett selected a rich
green paint color from The SherwinWilliams Company as an exotic backdrop to the leather accessories and
African-safari photography. Enjoy a

Storehouse chairs.
Media Room Bath
Get to Work
The media room is ideal for watching
television and relaxing, but it’s also
great as a home office. The design
team at Historical Concepts saw the
appeal of a top-floor hideaway for
someone working from home; the location provides separation from a busy
household. The built-in desk has storage options and plenty of workspace.
It makes you feel as though you were
working on grandpa’s rolltop desk—
without the headache of dragging it up
the stairs when you move in.
Rustic Touches
A cantilevered wood beam is used
for the vanity top in the media room
bath. This feature contrasts with the
glass sink and its contemporary fixture installed in the wall, exemplifying
a marriage of modern and old-world
elements.

Today, there are more ways than
ever to make your home environmentally friendly. Here are some
of the methods used in this
Idea House.
■ Hardwood floors and cabinetry
are prefinished before they are
installed, which eliminates harsh
fumes and chemicals from
being released on-site during
construction.
■ All landscaping is xeriscape, a
water-conserving approach to
gardening. After plants are fully
established, they survive on what
Mother Nature
provides, requiring
minimal to no
irrigation. When irrigation is necessary, rainwater
that has been collected and stored
is used (see photo
at right).
■ An energyefficient tankless
water heater offers hot water on
demand so large
amounts of
reserve water are
not being heated
constantly.
■ A dual-fuel heating and cooling
system runs on
electric power
until gas is
needed for extra
warmth. The
unit is properly
sized, so it runs
more efficiently
by keeping the
home at a constant temperature.
■ Solar panels on
the exterior of the
house provide
nearly one-quarter
of the home’s
electrical power.
