Over three weeks outstanding artists will bring
life and vitality to the amazing places and spaces
of the Square Mile including our own new pop-up venue in Paternoster Square, the
Bowler Hat (details from p.8). This is one of our biggest ever programmes with over
250 events in 50 venues, with half of them free of charge.
The City played host to the President of South Korea, Park Geun-hye, in November
and we are delighted to be following up her state visit with a number of events
under the title ‘Seoul in the City’ including a unique Anglo-Korean performance of
Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in St Paul’s Cathedral.
You can find more information and background to the Festival on our website colf.org and stay connected with us on Facebook or Twitter for regular updates.

These intimate performances offer an exclusive chance for you to
explore the glorious surroundings of venues not usually open to the public.

Iain Burnside piano
Matthew Cammelle narrator
This unique recital, structured
around the story of a voyage to the
front, pays homage to composers,
some now almost forgotten, who
enlisted and were killed in the First
World War. The programme focusses
on the friendship between two
composers and a poet – FS Kelly,
William Denis Browne and Rupert
Brooke – who sailed together to the
Dardanelles and died soon after. Their
extraordinary creative friendship
and their deaths generated forgotten
poems and music, and had a lasting
impact on surviving contemporaries.
Programme devised by Dr Kate Kennedy.

South Korea is developing a reputation as one of the world’s great cultural
centres. We are delighted to present a snapshot of Korean culture in the
City of London, from some of the most gifted young artists emerging
from the rich classical music scene to the brilliant mix of traditional and
contemporary Korean music with Ensemble Sinawi. Street dance in the
form of B-Boys has such popularity that the City of Seoul have their own
representative team – the Gamblerz Crew, who will be lighting up the
streets of our City. Add to this an extraordinary production of Hamlet and
an Anglo-Korean performance of Beethoven 9 (p.4) and you have some idea
why South Korea is emerging as a major cultural powerhouse.

Hamlet
Ensemble Sinawi combine traditional
Korean folk music and pansori, an epic
chant, with a contemporary edge
to create a sound that it is entirely
new. Their exploration of Korea’s
musical heritage led them to discover
the potential in adapting traditional
rhythms and melodies. Authentic
Korean sounds are juxtaposed in
the context of chamber-jazz to
create new and authentically Korean
improvisational musical forms – an
extraordinary new form of traditional
music for the 21st century.
Shakespeare’s iconic tale of tragedy,
revenge and intrigue is given a
magnificent Korean twist. Yohangza
faithfully recreate the tragedy and
drama of Shakespeare’s original Hamlet
in contemporary Korean language.
The staging, costumes and music
integrates Korean tradition and
shamanism. This is Hamlet like you
have never seen it before.

Shakespeare: the City and its Liberties
In Shakespeare’s own lifetime, the
theatre was widely regarded as
disreputable or dangerous. Aldermen,
concerned that plays would corrupt
their apprentices, restricted their
performance within the City. Yet
just outside the City walls were the
‘Liberties’, where theatre flourished
alongside other forbidden pleasures.
Join John Constable for a walk to
celebrate the 450th anniversary
of Shakespeare’s birth, traversing
the heart of the City, and visiting
places where The Bard and his
contemporaries lived and worked.
Throughout the City’s history its
shops and eating-places have been
subject to continuous change,
dictated by shifts in consumer
tastes and fashion, social upheaval,
fluctuating economic circumstances,
technological advances and the
impact of disasters like the Great Fire
and wartime bombing. Join Francis

Festival Children’s Parade
Escape into the world of children’s
literature as over 1,400 participants
present the theme ‘Off the Page!’.
Dozens of schools have chosen classic
children’s stories to bring to life through
costume, puppetry, music and dance,
using tons of the City’s recyclable waste.
Come cheer them on and spot your
favourite book in the troupe. There will
also be a special performance from
the Royal Shakespeare Company’s
production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The
Musical to round off the event.
