2007 Highlights
A trio of endangered Sumatran tiger cubs made their public
debut Presidents’ Day weekend to the delight of over 11,854 visitors,
breaking the record for the highest-ever attendance over a three-day weekend. The tiger cubs continued to be a popular sight throughout the year,
providing an educational opportunity for children and adults of all ages.
Education programs foster deep connections to the natural world.
Zoo educators inspire students and visitors by creating experiences
that spark passion for wildlife.

Our 1 ½-year-old brother and sister lion pair arrived in the
spring. It was a treat for the Sacramento community to have the
opportunity to watch these siblings grow. The male arrived with
only a ruff of fur around the neck and the top of his head, which
fills out as he matures.
Summer Camp classes offer pre-K through 8th grade students
lessons about backyard habitats, powerful predators, African
adventures and rockin’ reptiles through crafts, games, handson projects, and of course, the animals.
The Black and white ruffed lemurs gave birth to their second
set of offspring. The young male quickly adapted to his large
family. His yearling brothers and sister taught him the ropes,
literally. These lemurs are known for hanging upside down by
their feet from treetops or rope.

2007 Highlights
Zoo volunteers scooped nearly 1,000 gallons of 14 different
flavors of ice cream into 9,000 cups at our annual Ice Cream Safari
fundraiser for over 3,000 guests.
In 2007, the Sacramento Zoological Society’s Conservation Committee
participated in sixteen different projects and doubled its yearly commitment with a total of $9,076 donated to conservation organizations.
One of the Zoological Society’s largest conservation efforts for the past
three years focuses on protecting Grevy’s zebras in Kenya. The Grevy’s
Zebra Trust raises awareness of conservation issues in local Kenyan
communities, monitors animal populations, coordinates productive
partnerships with local organizations, and secures resources for Grevy’s
zebra through holistic management of community rangeland.
Together, 1,363 volunteers donated 29,469 hours of valuable
time and talent maintaining area gardens, educating visitors,
serving on the Board of Directors and helping at Zoo events.
Conservation Projects in 2007

and Wildlife biologists
Other global projects include funding hornbill nest boxes in Thailand, and purchasing
a jaguar camera trap for research at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary in Belize.
6
A local conservation success involves 78 White-faced ibis chicks and 100 eggs transported to the International Bird Rescue Research Center, from a field in Yolo County
which was about to be plowed under. The Zoological Society and some individual Zoo
staff members helped donate to the IBRRC’s “Adopt an Ibis” program and assisted in the
successful release of 31 birds in the Vic Fazio Wildlife Area.
