“In an age when national chain
restaurants are serving a lot of ‘boilin-a-bag’ and pre-cooked frozen
food reheated in a microwave, it can
be tough to remember what honest
from-scratch American cooking
tastes like,” says Elizabeth Lumpkin,
owner of Boss Hawg’s.
“‘Artisan cooking’ is what our
grandmas did. Grandma started with
honest whole ingredients, cooked all
day, and put a meal on the table that
was not only delicious, but healthy
and satisfying as well.
“Processed foods don’t fill us up
the way from-scratch cooking does.
Many of the calorie-dense ingredients are so far removed from anything the body recognizes as food
that it never tells our brain we’re
full. We keep eating, but never feel
satisfied.
“At Boss Hawg’s, for fifteen years
we’ve cooked potatoes from scratch
every day to make potato salad that
is the exact same recipe my mother
used, and her mother before her. It
contains simple, honest, wholesome
ingredients: potatoes, peeled, quartered and boiled; celery, cleaned and
chopped; fresh raw eggs, boiled and
peeled; onions, cleaned and diced,
and Hellman’s Mayonnaise. Why
Hellman’s? It costs a lot more,
sure...but it tastes better, and that is
reason enough to spend more: it
insures guests they will get the very
best potato salad we can give.
“Our brisket is another excellent
example of our dedication. We start
with the best brisket on the market,
Sterling Silver Certified Angus Beef.
Now, there’s brisket! Only a very
small percentage of beef brisket
passes all the criteria to meet the
quality standards of Sterling
Silver. Does this creme de la
creme of beef brisket cost
more? You betcha. So why do
we do it? Why do we spend
more than we have to for ingredients that could be had for a
great deal less? Very simple, we
are here to serve the best food
in town, and we can’t do it with
the second-tier ingredients that
many chains and franchises are
willing to purchase in an effort
to satisfy their profit goals and
stockholders.
“Ribs are what we are most known
for, and we’re proud to report that we
have not backed off from ‘artisan
cooking’ in the rib department either.
We are the only restaurant in town
offering both smoky traditional
spareribs and meaty tender babyback
ribs. Both are outstanding because we
start with the finest rib on the market,
available only from Sterling Silver.
We build a fire from split oak logs
every morning...get a roaring big
blaze going...then, right before the
meat goes in the smoker, we top the
fire with flavor wood: apple, cherry,
hickory, pecan, alder...different
woods for different types of meat,
and different times of the year.
“Recently, we’ve added fresh homemade pies to our menu—a wonderful
way to end a meal of honest American
cooking. We even make our own ice
cream: cream, sugar, eggs and milk,
churned to perfection in an old fashioned ice cream churn—destined for
the dessert plate right next to that
warm slice of homemade pie!
“Restaurants like Boss Hawg’s exist
as proof that people CAN tell the difference, and they do care about the
taste and quality of what they feed
their body, family, clients and friends.
“It’s always been all about the food
at Boss Hawg’s. We don’t change to
satisfy investors or stockholders. We
are locally owned and operated, and
the only ‘investors’ we care about is
our customers. Fake food and chemistry posing as cooking will come
and go...but the real thing can be
found at Boss Hawg’s, on the
Terrace at Brookwood Center on
29th Street—every day of the year,
in Topeka, KS. We’re open 11AM to
2AM daily. Call us at 785-273-7300.”
Whitehall Fine Gifts Offers Treasures From Around The World
There’s no need to travel far and
wide to find unique one-of-a-kind
items—just visit Whitehall Fine
Gifts, right here in Topeka. Locally
owned by Al and Dorothy Eliot, the
store is brimming with gifts, collectibles and antiques, offfering a
shopping adventure not found anywhere else in town.
“We are Topeka’s alternative to
mall shopping,” states Al. “Our
store is filled from floor to ceiling
with wonderful treasures just waiting to be discovered—and we have
parking just steps from our door.
“Fenton Art Glass is still USAmade and going strong. And, as
Topeka’s exclusive Fenton Art Glass
Showcase Dealer, no one knows the
product better than we do. We can
point out the finest features of each
design as well as explain limited edition
pieces and their growing value. Fenton’s
newest line is ‘Cameo Glass’ and it is
gorgeous. The photo shown here doesn’t
really do it justice. It has to be seen and
touched to appreciate the beauty.
Basically, it is carved glass over glass,
producing the look of an original cameo
in a new format. Cameo Glass is an
extremely limited edition. In some of
the designs as few as
35 are available—
world wide! This is
also a one-time order
situation. Because of
the limited number,
no re-ordering is
possible.
“Fenton pieces are
more rare and valuable then ever. In
fact, we’ve been
searching all over the
world for glass from
the secondary market
to satisfy the desires
of our collectors. Our
Christmas order has
already been placed
and the merchandise
will begin to arrive
as early as August.” (Now’s the time to
look at the catalog brochure and choose
the pieces you want—or they will be spoken for before the order arrives!)
Al and Dorothy are actually experts on
every product in their store, and they have a
huge and varied selection for everyone’s
shopping pleasure. They carry treasured
items such as Rick Cain wildlife sculptures...new Pavilion Angels with touching
messages printed on their flowing
skirts...Ethereal Seraphim Angels by
Roman...soft, cuddly Boyd’s bears...
and charming little Munro Fairies &
Dragons. You’ll find exquisite Franz
porcelain pieces...elegant Armani figurines...Orient & Flume Art Glass...
and Marie Osmond Dolls. Their G..
DeBrekht Santa collection, from Russia,
continues to grow in popularity, as does
their sparkling Annaleece Swarovski
crystal and Crislu jewelry. In short—
there is something for everyone.
Then, just as you think you have all
your shopping taken care of, you’ll
discover their unbelievably delicious
old-fashioned, hand-made chocolate
truffles! They are almost too pretty to
eat, but too tempting not to. Be sure
you try a Luscious Lemon truffle, or
Toffee Almond, or maybe Chocolate
Caramel—oh, just go ahead and get
one of each!
For a shopping experience you’re sure
to enjoy, visit Whitehall Fine Gifts, at

Exciting Summer Adventures Await
Children In Miss Sylvia’s Classes
Plan Ahead And Save!
You provide for your family’s welfare. You make sure all the essentials are covered...except for maybe
the one thing nobody likes to think
about, much less plan for.
“History shows that cemetery space
and funeral arrangement costs will
only continue to increase,” says Lee
Benson, General Manager of Mount
Hope Cemetery and Mausoleum.
“Most families find it hard to deal
with the decisions and costs that a
death forces on them at a time when
they are the least emotionally prepared. Prearrangement allows expenses to be met at today’s cost,
through current income and budgeted
time payments. Families who wait
until the time of need are required to
pay the entire amount up-front.”
There are many benefits to planning ahead for yourself and loved
ones. To assist you, Mount Hope
“This summer we’ll take children
from four to six years of age on an
exciting Musikgarten Nature Trail
adventure,” says Dr. Sylvia
Hamilton, Director of Music &
Movement with Miss Sylvia.
“We’re offering two sessions—July
12-16 and July 19-23. In the classes,
which will be held from 9AM to
11:30AM each day, children will
share the wonders of exploring
music and nature with its abundance of sights, sounds, fragrances,
touches and tastes. They’ll discover
the joy of active music making
through songs, stories, movement
and sensory experiences in nature
exploration. Hikes, art projects and
snack time will further develop the
themes for each eventful day.
“Prior to the Nature Trail camp—
three two-week courses will be
offered for children from 18 months
to three and a half years of age:
June 7th through the 10th and June
14th-17th. Our Nature’s Music
classes will be held from 9 to 9:30
each morning...Twist and Turn
classes from 9:45 to 10:15...and our
new Nimble & Quick class, from
10:30 to 11:00. In Nature’s Music,
children will enjoy moving,
singing, listening and playing as
they explore the wonders of nature.
Our Twist & Turn and Nimble &
Quick classes are based on Nursery
Rhymes re-imagined with music and
movement. All of our exciting courses will be held at Grace Episcopal
Cathedral at 701 SW 8th.”
Sylvia received her Doctor of
Musical Arts degree from K.U. in
1995. She is Level II certified
through the Early Childhood Music
and Movement Association as a
specialist in early childhood music

The Center for Nutrition and
Preventive Medicine (CFN) was
founded by bariatric physician Rick
Tague, MD, MPH in 1996. Dr. Tague
has assisted thousands in their pursuit
of optimal weight and metabolic
health. “Unfortunately, too many people give up on weight loss after using
ineffective fad diets and group meetings,” reports Dr. Tague. “Proven
medical strategies that manage overweight tendencies at their biochemical
source are giving remarkable results
for scores of people seeking significant weight loss and enhanced metabolism. Margaret’s story is one of
many success stories we see every
week at the Center for Nutrition.”
Margaret Boyles works in the
Legal Dept. of BC/BS of Kansas.
“Our company puts a real emphasis
on wellness,” says Margaret. “It’s a
wonderful concept, of course...and
I’d heard about Dr. Tague and read
many of his patient’s success stories...but I always thought, ‘Oh, I
don’t do diets very well.’
“Then, in September of last year I
started to have health issues, and I
wasn’t feeling well. Finally, it came
to me: It was time to make a life
change. At the same time, our company began an even stronger push
for wellness among the individuals
on their staff. A co-worker told me
about Dr. Tague’s office, and said
they offered a free consultation—so I
thought, ‘What do I have to lose?’
(No pun intended.) I went in, and
absolutely fell in love with the staff
working at the CFN, and I decided

that with their help and encouragement, this was something I could do.
“I am 5' 9", weighed 215 pounds,
and wore a size 18 when I began my
nutrition program. Today I weigh
153—62 pounds gone—and I wear a
size 8! I met my goal in January and
am on maintenance now, which is a
very important part of any weight
loss program. Losing weight takes a
real commitment.
“Family, friends and co-workers
have been so encouraging, and my
husband tells me that I look great.
He’s seen the positive difference in
me, and can tell how much better I
feel. I also cook differently for the
family and am much more active.
“I had been an athlete my
whole life, but when I started
gaining, I quit exercising. Now,
I’m on an 8-week program I
found called ‘Couch to 5K’ and my goal is to be able to
soon run 5K without stopping!
“I cannot say enough good
things about the staff at the
CFN. They have given me so
much help...assisting me in
finding nutritional substitutes I
could really enjoy, and educating me on good foods to eat.
(Who knew there was such a
difference in yogurts?) They’ve
helped me get back to the person I knew I could be!”
“Over the last 14 years I’ve developed a wellness system I call my
‘Optimum Weight Loss Program,’ ”
relates Dr. Tague. “Now available at
the Center For Nutrition, it’s
designed to provide the fastest fat
reduction possible and enhance the
metabolism—without surgery and
without hunger! Results are impressive! In a 2007 study with obese
patients, women lost up to 53.5
pounds and men lost up to 77.3
pounds in just 12 weeks. The average 12 week loss was an amazing 43
pounds!
“With medical nutrition clinics in
Leawood and Topeka, I have personally supervised the weight loss
of over 5,000 patients who have lost
over 150,000 pounds. We use modern treatment methods based on the
latest research findings of bariatric
medicine. Our systematic approach
is designed to maximize metabolism
and weight loss, and provide the
individual support each patient
needs to achieve success. Patient
benefits from this approach have
been life changing.”

Another example of how you can
save money on prescriptions is if

Drug, you can get three month’s
worth at a time.
“We are happy to give free comparison pricing,” says Eric Enns,

those who are self-employed, have
high deductibles or no insurance, are

If you’re on a fixed

Canada Drug can save

Tubs, Tile And Countertops Look “Better Than New”
With Miracle Method
Are your cracked, worn and outof-date kitchen countertops or dingy
tubs and showers a source of embarrassment? Or, do you hate the color
of your kitchen or bathroom tile?
These are all areas that many people
would like to remodel, but can’t
afford the time or money to do so, or
they don’t want to deal with the

Luckily, there is an easier way!

Karen and Michael Brumleve
have been Miracle Method franchise owners and resurfacers for the

Karen, “and people are literally
thrilled with the results. When they
see our finished work, they often
say, ‘It looks better than it did when
it was new!’ ”
“My wife and I contracted with the
local Topeka Miracle Method contractor about a year ago. We are
more than pleased with the service
and product. They refinished our
kitchen countertops, our cultured

Banner Mobility Introduces Turning
Automotive Seating And Lift-Up Seats
Looking For A Way To Improve
Productivity In Your Workplace?
“People with limited mobility have

with the turning,

and exiting a vehicle can now be

rotates out over the door sill.
“Bruno has put years of research
and engineering into this remarkable
product. The unit is constructed so
that it can be mounted on almost

Heights Chiropractic Wants To “Get
You Back To Doing What You Enjoy”
“When there is no interference, our
nervous system controls the healthy
function of virtually every cell, tissue, organ and system in our bodies,”
explains Dr. Connie Lang, D.C.,
B.C.A.O., owner of Heights Atlas
Orthogonal Chiropractic Clinic.
“Since the spinal nerves directly link
the brain to the rest of the body, many
ailments are a result of improper
nerve flow due to misalignment of
the vertebrae.
“Our goal is to help people who are
hurting get back to doing what they
enjoy, whether it’s gardening, bicycling, playing with the grandkids—or
whatever. We use a computerized
analysis and treatment system called
the ProAdjuster, which provides the
highest degree of accuracy in helping
to fine tune the nervous system. The
treatments do not cause any discomfort...there is no twisting, turning or
‘popping,’ of the body. The patient
experiences only a light tapping sensation while the instrument is directed up and down the spine. Seated
comfortably in a chair, anyone (from
newborn to elderly) can be treated
safely and gently.
“The ProAdjuster enables us to
analyze and treat the dysfunctional
segments of the spine and then reanalyze. This pre and post data is

“Adjusting the vertebra back into
correct alignment removes interference to the nervous system, which
enables the body to restore itself to
optimum health. Most people

It’s A Sign Of Love!
“It was a mom doing a good job.
Then, it just grew,” says Rev. Jim
Bender, pastor of Faith Lutheran
Church in Topeka. He is referring to
the on-going deaf ministry at Faith,
headed by Deb Hale—and how
important it has become for deaf
persons in our community.
Deb Hale learned sign language
more than 20 years ago to communicate better with her deaf son, David,
when he was a child. Then, she took
him to church and “signed” the service to him. “I wanted my son to
know Jesus,” says Deb, “and this
was the way it was going to happen.”
As David grew older, Deb began to
sign at the front of the church, not
just for David, but for others who
might be interested. Today, Faith
Lutheran Church is known as a place
where deaf people are welcome, and
where they can become integrated
into worship services.
Statistics show that there are more
than three million deaf people in the
U.S., and 95-to-98% of them are
unchurched. “The the mission field
is enormous,” Deb says. “We
believe there are about 400 deaf
people in Topeka, and we want very
much to let them know about our
services. I, and my daughter-in-law,
Sara Hale, provide ASL (American

flexibility and muscular enhancement. Plus—our ‘karate kids’ make
new friends and have a lot of fun.
“Enrollment is now underway for
new Summer classes, including new
morning hours for youth. We
encourage students to sign up for
our Beginners program. If they
wish, new students can make an
appointment for a free trial class.
Trials for ages four through nine are
held at Noon on Saturdays; ages ten
through teen are at 1:15PM.
“Our Black Belt club is made up
of students hoping to achieve a
Black Belt in karate, and we also
have our Leadership program consisting of Jr. Black Belts whose goal
it is to reach the second or third
degree Black Belt.
“Karate teaches youngsters
lessons in leadership and helps them
stay grounded throughout their
school years and into adulthood.
“I have students who started with
me when they were four and stayed
with the program through high
school. Many of them have told me
that they learned the importance of
self control through karate, which
helped them stay away from the
temptations that confronted them in
high school and college.
“Parents have reported that their
children have learned to stay
focused and that they have more
confidence and are better coordinated. As a result, their studies have
also improved.”

Create Your Own Delicious Rainbow!
Have you ever tasted a
Rainbow? You can! Just
stop by Straight Water at
10th and Gage in Fleming
Place and choose your own
three flavors of GENUINE
Hawaiian Shave Ice to
make whatever color of
the rainbow you want!
Sandra and Glenn
Sanders, Straight Water
owners, serve Hawaiian Shave Ice
all year long. “Our flavors are
EXTREME,” says Sandra. “Your
first taste will make your taste buds
explode! When someone takes their
first bite, their eyes get real big and
they usually say, ‘Wow! That’s
REALLY good!’
“We carry 21 flavors, including
bodacious banana, tiger’s blood (one
of our best sellers), watermelon, cotton candy, passion fruit, margarita
and blue raspberry—just to name a
few. Popular rainbow flavors are
blue raspberry, watermelon and
banana, which magically creates the
beautiful red, orange, yellow, green
and blue colors of the rainbow. Of
course people can select their own
combinations, such as mango, pina
colada and luscious lime! Those
aren’t bad either! (Yum!)
“What makes our Shave Ice so special is that we use Straight Water’s
pure ice, and our shaver
shaves the ice like snow, so
the flavors stay on the top
and don’t sink to the bottom of the cup. Prices are
$1.50, $2.50 and $3.50.
Extra flavors are 50 cents
for two and $1.00 for
three—to create the luscious rainbow.
“Each summer we participate in the Shawnee Public
Library kids’ reading program. The
more a child reads, the bigger the
reward....and we’re told that our
Straight Water coupon for a free
Hawaiian Shave Ice is the absolute
favorite of all the rewards!”
