In addressing those present, the Prime
Minister noted the need for further
development of the private sector particularly
in the areas of low cost housing, mining
and energy. He went on to urge the Bank to
partner with the government in financing
projects in the energy sector to increase the
country’s manufacturing base which would
significantly contribute to lowering the cost of

noted Prime Minister Habamuremyi.

participation in financing Hanga Umurimo
projects in the country and said that the
scheme is a potential sector for other banks
to finance as well. “70% of the Rwandan
population is made up of women and young

essential to the growth of our economy and
therefore the banking sector should increase
its focus on these individuals” noted Prime

to promote home ownership in the country.
“The consumer banking department was set
up as part of the bank’s efforts to grow its
retail offering and as at 30th September 2012,
the Bank had disbursed over Rwf 20 billion of
mortgage loans compared to Rwf 12 billion in
2011,” said Gatera.

Bank of Kigali’s contribution to the innovation
currently taking place within the financial
services sector. “Bank of Kigali has significantly
contributed to the circulation of ATMs and Point
of Sale machines (POS) in the country,” noted
Ambassador Gatete. He further said that the
Bank has contributed significantly to financial
inclusion agenda through agency banking
allowing the Bank to reach Rwandans who may
otherwise have been unable to access financial
services. According to Ambassador Gatete, Bank
of Kigali contributed significantly to the total
loans disbursed in 2012.
