SOCIETY of ST. VINCENT de PAUL
Members of the Society are men and
women who strive to grow spiritually by
offering person-to-person service to
individuals in need. Call 501-538-1062, if
you or anyone you know needs assistance
The society meets every Wednesday in the
Carroll Room from 10:30AM to 11:30 AM.
After Jesus was baptized, he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and a voice was heard “This is my
beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we give
to the poor, we also can hear these same words.
As you help those who are suffering, know in your
heart the truth of the words “you are my beloved in
whom I am well pleased”.

THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT OF
OUR ANGEL TREE/FOOD BASKETS!!
Thank you so much for making St. Mary’s Angel Tree/
Food Baskets such an overwhelming success this year.
The total number of angels were 154! This is a 43%
increase from last year. Amazing! The Food Baskets were
received with such gratitude - thank you for all the
generous donations made to the Food Baskets.
A big thanks to the youth that assisted and the adult
volunteers for delivering and loading the gifts and food
baskets.
Since St. Mary’s was also assisting many families from
Our Lady of Guadalupe in Glenwood plus local families,
gifts and food baskets deliveries were over a 2 day
period. This program would not have been possible
without all of you that so graciously bought clothes, gifts,
and toys. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
St. Mary’s made this a very Merry Christmas for many!

The Baptism of the Lord
MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT
REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD
The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the
Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week’s
feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an
“epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in
Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism.
The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for
this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating
and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah
describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account of the
baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus.
And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was
“richly poured out” on us also, through the “bath of
rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6).

This is one of the key moments in the life of Jesus. Up
north in his hometown of Nazareth he must have heard
about John. At some point an inner voice must have said,
"Go south, go to the desert. Go listen to this preacher
John."
When he came to the desert, he may have stood in a long
line before that moment came when he entered the water
and John baptized him. Mark gives us only the briefest
account of their meeting, but does present John as
expecting someone mightier than he who would baptize
with the Holy Spirit.
It is this same Holy Spirit who came down on Jesus as he
was coming out of the water. At that moment, the heavens
were torn open, heaven reached down to touch the
Galilean, and the Spirit descended like a dove. Have you
ever seen a gull descend to snatch a fish or a hawk swoop
down to seize its prey? By contrast, the image of a
descending dove is one of beauty and grace, of gentle
alighting.
The words do not announce Jesus to others, as in
Matthew's account, but they are spoken only to him: "You
are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased" (1:11),
echoing the words the Lord speaks in the first song of the
Servant in the book of Isaiah.
The descent of the dove did not mean an easy life for
Jesus, but God had penetrated his being in a way that
would then drive him into the desert to begin his mission
of confronting the powers of sin and death. This gentle
dove came--and continues to come--with a mighty power.

TURNING THE TIDE
When everything goes against you, till it seems as though
you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up
then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will
turn.

LIVING GOD’S WORD
At baptism, the Spirit came upon you in the presence of
the Christian community, claiming you in Jesus' name,
and God said, "You are my beloved son/daughter." Spend
some time praying over these words. What do you say to
God in return? How does it affect what you do in life?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis
sightings lately, attended Star Trek conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is
solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest
manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of
John’s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism.
At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people,
the Egyptians understood the life‑giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in
the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom
wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since
“today there is a blessing on the water.” At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and
white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last
time.
