Your journey will begin in Bergen, a harbor town thriving with more than nine hundred years
of history of vibrant commercial trade. You’ll experience the fishing village established by Viking
King Olav I. Some of the seaward-facing gables you’ll witness along the wharf date back to the
fourteenth century!
Your ship will then travel on a northbound passage to Kirkenes, an arctic outpost near the Russian
border and back southward to your origin of Bergen, and stop at 34 uniquely picturesque ports
along the way. The round trip tour will immerse you in the culture and landscape of Norway’s
coast as you visit each town both during the day and at night. This is a 12-day voyage that
promises to breathe new life into its passengers and live on long after the journey is over.
Passengers may also wish to travel one-way and can choose either of these exceptional options:
the 7-day northbound voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes or the 6-day southward journey from
Kirkenes to Bergen.

NORTHBOUND VOYAGE
DAY 1: BERGEN
Bergen is the bustling capital of Norway’s fjord district. If you arrive a few hours
before departure, stroll around the old wooden buildings in the Bryggen Wharf,
remnants of its Hanseatic past. In travel’s early days, it was easier to get from Bergen
to the Continent by sea than it was to get to Oslo—a fact apparent in this city’s
architecture and culture. You board the Norwegian Costal Voyage this evening.
DAY 2: MALOY : TORVIK : ALESUND : MOLDE : KRISTIANSUND
When you awake, the ship will be crossing the open Stadthavet and heading for
Torvik. En route, you’ll stop in the beautiful Art Nouveau town of Alesund. (Between
April 15 and September 14, all ships call at Geiranger in the Geirangerfjord, a
UNESCO World Heritage site, to see the beautiful Brudesloret, Friaren, and the
Seven Sisters waterfalls.) After a call at Molde—its magnificent view of the Romsdal
Alps made it a favorite vacation spot of Henrik Ibsen—the ship will carefully navigate
the Hustadvika, a belt of islets and skerries, before docking at Kristiansund. Optional

DAY 3: TRONDHEIM : RORVIK
The ship arrives early this morning in ancient Trondheim, where you’ll have time to
explore this jewel of a city, Norway’s first capital. Did you know that the first Viking
sale of goods from “the new found land” took place here about 1000 A.D.? Timber
from Leif Eriksson’s Vinland estate was sold to a Bremen merchant. Walk the
charming streets, sit by the peaceful harbor or cross the old city bridge to see the
restored wooden buildings in Bakklandet and the great gothic cathedral of Nidaros,
where the new kings of old Norway once received their official blessing. From
Trondheim, the ship sails on to Rorvik where the southbound and northbound
coastal ships meet. Optional shore excursions available.

DAY 4: ORNES : BODO : STAMSUND : SVOLVAER
Today you’ll cross the Arctic Circle. Of course you can’t actually see the line, but on
your portside, the globe on the island of Vikingen serves as a marker. There are
spectacular sites ahead: islands and skerries with majestic rock formations, whose
origins are the stuff of legend. After Bodo, the ship heads out to open sea for the
Lofoten Islands with their picturesque cabins on stilts and weathered wooden racks
with drying cod. In the evening, she’ll navigate the narrow Raftsund Strait, passing
the looming crags of the Trollfjord. Optional shore excursions available.
DAY 5: HARSTAD : FINNSNES : TROMSO : SKJERVOY
This morning you’ll pass the medieval Trondenes church before calling at Harstad for
breakfast. Afterward, you’ll sail across the Vagsfjord past the great island of Senja
with its diverse countryside of farmland, pine trees and plunging peaks. Later you’ll
stop at Tromso, the “Paris of the North.” In the nineteenth century, Russian, British,
Dutch and German ships called here before heading off on Arctic expeditions for
hunting whales, walruses and seals. Optional shore excursions available.

DAYS 6-7: HAMMERFEST : HAVOYSUND : HONNINGSVAG :

Finnmark’s landscape is austere in its beauty, teeming with wildlife. Watch for
rookeries of puffins and gannets along the cliffs, and pods of orca hunting for
herring. After calling at Honningsvag, the capital of the North Cape, the ship heads
east toward the pretty fishing villages of Kjollefjord, Mehamn and Berlevag. On the
seventh day, you’ll arrive at Kirkenes, the journey’s northern terminus and turning

SOUTHBOUND VOYAGE
DAY 7: KIRKENES : VARDO : BATSFJORD : BERLEVAG
After a few hours docked at Kirkenes, the ship will depart upon the southbound half
of her voyage, calling during the day at ports passed at night on the trip northward.
Crossing Varangerfjord, Norway’s only east-facing fjord and a fabled bird-watching
site, you’ll arrive in Vardo, the easternmost point of the country. Next the ship will
round the Varanger peninsula, where archaeologists excavated a community
believed to date from 9000 B.C. In the evening, the ship calls at Batsfjord, which also
boasts the remains of a Stone Age settlement, and Berlevag. Look out for the
Tanahorn mountain, which long ago was a Sami sacrifice site.
DAY 8: HONNINGSVAG : HAVOYSUND : HAMMERFEST : OKSFJORD :
SKJERVOY : TROMSO
The ship arrives at Honningsvag in the early morning. After calling at Havoysund, she
will stop for 1-1/2 hours in Hammerfest, the world’s most northerly town. Despite its
remote location, it was the first Norwegian town to have electric street lighting and
its own power station. She then heads south to Oksfjord, whose glacier calves
directly into the sea. After crossing open water, the ship calls at the old trading post
of Skjervoy. You’ll dock in Tromso just in time to savor its nightlife. Optional shore

DAY 9: HARSTAD : RISOYHAMN : SORTLAND : STOKMARKNES :
SVOLVAER : STAMSUND

The island groups of Lofoten and Vesteralen have some of the most stunning scenery
on this journey. Before your arrival, you’ll see the captain skillfully maneuver the ship
through the shallow waters of the Risoyrenna Channel where sand banks are visible
through the green water on both sides of the channel. The ship will negotiate the
narrow Raftsund Strait leading into the breathtaking Trollfjord before arriving in
Svolvaer and Stamsund. Later, the ship heads east across Vestfjord toward Bodo.

From Ornes, you’ll travel through crystalline waters, filled with spawning cod from
January to April, and go by lush agricultural fields. Nearly every towering peak you’ll
see is associated with a local legend. Crossing the Arctic Circle once again, you’ll
pass the idyllic island of Sandnessjoen. On the approach to Bronnoysund, which you
reach this afternoon, you’ll spy the mythical Seven Sisters mountains. Make sure
you’re on deck when the ship departs Bronnoysund—you’ll be impressed by the captain’s steady hand! Today’s last port of call will be Rorvik.
DAY 11: TRONDHEIM : KRISTIANSUND : MOLDE
Arrive in Trondheim early, with time to visit Norway’s largest medieval church,
Nidaros Cathedral, and the restored Archbishop’s Residence. You’ll then sail out
through the beautiful Trondheimsfjord, past Hitra, island of deer, and lonely Grip. At
day’s end, you’ll call at Molde, before arriving in Alesund late in the evening in time
for a stroll on shore. Optional shore excursions available.

During the night, the ship will call at Torvik, Maloy and Floro. The World’s Most
Beautiful Voyage is drawing to a close. Yet still ahead lies mile after mile of spectacular west Norway scenery: holly trees on Svanoy, the mouth of Sognefjord, and the
beautiful archipelago on the approach to Bergen.

once had a studio, into Telemark, one of Norway’s most scenic districts. It’s
a landscape of contrasts and surprises, with winding valleys, precipitous
gorges, silvery lakes, and snow-covered mountains. Then it’s on to Heddal
to visit its twelfth-century triple-nave stave church, Norway’s largest. It’s
said the troll Finn Fairhair prodded five farmers to build the church—in
three days! You’ll next visit a twelfth-century Romanesque church in
Seljord, which legend has it was built by a goblin. It’s on to Morgedal, the
birthplace of Sondre Norheim, a pioneer of modern skiing, before you
ascend the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, a vast expanse of heath,
lakes and mountain peaks. After driving through mountain passes and
tunnels, you’ll arrive at Roedal, famous for its stave church. After a stop at
the thundering Latefoss Waterfall, which tumbles down the mountainside
in a double avalanche before gently spraying the road, you’ll proceed
along the shore of the Soerfjord, a branch of the mighty Hardangerfjord.
You’ll cruise by ferry to Bruravik on your way to Ulvik, where you’ll spend

After breakfast, you’ll drive past the stunning Skjervet Waterfall. Later,

mountains to Gudvangen. From there you’ll take a cruise on the Naeroy
and Aurland fjords, the arms of the Sognefjord, the world’s longest and
deepest fjord. You’ll arrive in the hamlet of Flam, where you’ll lunch
before boarding the famous Flam Railway. A marvel of Norwegian
engineering, it ascends 2,845 feet in less than an hour, while chugging

easy to see why when you're in the village of Geiranger. You’ll enjoy a
dizzying view of long, silvery waterfalls cascading into the deep, emerald
waters of the fjord. From there you’ll take a heart-in-the-throat ride down
switchback roads to gentler terrain. A ferry from Eidsdal will take
you to the surprisingly urbane town of Alesund. From there travel up
to the top of Aksla Mountain for a panoramic view of Alesund, the
surrounding archipelago, and the magnificent Sunnmore Alps.

June 1-September 15, 7-1/2 hours: Travel up the Eagle’s Way,
passing through the valley of Valldal. Saint Olav also trekked through this
long, beautiful valley, so you are in good company. You’ll then drive
down the hairpin bends of the Trollstigen road to the lush valley
of Romsdal, which lies in gentle contrast to the surrounding grey peaks.
Conclude with a short sightseeing tour of Molde.
WALKING TOUR OF ALESUND
January 1-April 15, September 16-December 31, 2 hours: After the
fire of 1904, Alesund was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style. This guided
walking tour provides a good insight into the city’s history and cultural

by a Viking king in 997, Trondheim was, for many centuries, Norway’s
capital. New kings still come to Nidaros Cathedral for a blessing

intimacy and charm. Visit the Royal Residence, one of the largest
wooden buildings in all of Scandinavia, and the brilliant white
Kristiansten Fortress, which towers over the town. You might also want to

April 17-October 2, 2-1/2 hours: Visit the Nidaros Cathedral, Norway’s
national shrine, and the Ringve Museum, a series of well-preserved
timber buildings that house a unique collection of historical musical
instruments.
SVARTISEN GLACIER
April 4-October 3, 6-1/4 hours: On this excursion, you’ll visit Svartisen,
Norway’s second largest glacier. Just south of Ornes, you’ll board a small
boat to take you through narrow straits to the Glacier Visitor Center,
where you’ll learn how the melted glacier water is collected and used for
hydropower. As you travel toward Bodo, you’ll pass gorgeous pastoral
landscapes and stunning views of the ocean and fjords.
SEA SAFARI TO SALTSTRAUMEN
April 1-October 31, 2 hours: Travel by inflatable boat out to this wild,
majestic seascape for a chance to glimpse some white-tailed eagles
hovering in the sky as they hunt their prey. These sea eagles are Europe’s
largest predatory bird with wingspans of over six feet. This fully-guided
tour should not be confused with extreme sea rafting. The objective is to
bring passengers as close as possible to the eagles and the sea. You will

TROMSO CITY SIGHTSEEING, INCLUDING POLARIA
All year, 2-1/2 hours: Called the “Paris of the North,” Tromso is
stunningly situated on an island set amidst mountains and fjords. Learn
about arctic flora and fauna at Polaria, a museum and aquarium built to
resemble huge blocks of ice thrown ashore by the mighty ocean. Next,
visit one of the city’s icons, the Arctic Cathedral, which rises some 120
feet into the air like a mountain of ice. Its façade is a huge stained-glass
window with a grid work of clear glass strips through which daylight
filters with mystical effect. It’s an experience not to be missed.
TROMSO DOG SLEDDING SAFARI
January 1-April 30; November 1-December 31, 3 hours: After a
short drive to Kvaloya Island near Tromso, you’ll change into warmer
clothes and meet your sled dogs. They’re eager to carry you over a
bleak, beautiful landscape of sea and open plains. In winter, you’ll be
equipped with head lamps, which create a magical atmosphere as the
dogs run almost silently through the snow. At the end of the trip, you’ll
visit a cozy lavvo—a traditional Sami tent—where you will enjoy refreshments around the open fire.
TROMSO WILDERNESS CENTER
June 1-August 31, 3 hours: The Tromso Wilderness Center offers
views of the sea, mountains, and plains. Here you may join a guided
nature hike, and then relax with coffee and cake.
THE NORTH CAPE
All year, 3-1/2 hours: Travel by bus from Honningsvag, the northernmost community in Finnmark, toward the 71st parallel and North Cape.
In summer, you may glimpse reindeer grazing by the roadside, or
perhaps you’ll catch sight of a red fox. The region’s flora and fauna are
rare and exceptional. Look out for the Chamorchis alpina, a dwarf orchid,
and the brilliant yellow globe flower. If in season you’ll be able to
sample the delicious cloudberry. By the sea, the cliffs and skerries
abound with puffins, gannets and cormorants. Your trip ends at North
Cape, a fabled cliff formation rising a sheer 920 feet out of the icy
ocean. This is Europe’s most northerly point.
BIRD-WATCHING SAFARI
May 1-August 31, 3-1/2 hours: Set out by motorcoach from Honningsvag for the fishing hamlet of Gjesvaer. Continue by boat to the nature
reserve teeming with bird life. Conditions permitting, you will see
the red-beaked puffin, razor-billed auk and flocks of kittiwake. And
perhaps you will spot a mighty sea eagle.
RUSSIAN BORDER TRIP
All year, 1-1/2 hours: At Kirkenes, the only Norwegian town where East
meets West, the ship turns around and starts its southward journey. If
you like, you may travel to Storskog, the Norwegian border station on
the Russian frontier. On the way back, you’ll stop at Prestfjellet
Mountain to look out over Kirkenes and the fjord.
RIVERBOAT SAFARI TO THE RUSSIAN BORDER
June 1-September 10, 2-1/2 hours: As you journey a few miles up the
Pasvik River in a local river boat, your guide will tell you stories about the
eastern Sami people, the saintly princes Boris and Gleb, and the holy
monk Trifon of Pechenga. You’ll also pass the Trifon Cave and
Kjerringstupet Cliff.

December 15-June 6, 2-1/2 hours: What do you do when the plains are
buried in snow? Ride snowmobiles! Or maybe try chair-sledding. You’ll

May 8-October 7, 6 hours: There is something very special about
experiencing the North Cape early in the morning. After enjoying breakfast and spending some time on the plateau, board the motorcoach to
head southward along the mighty Porsangerfjord. This part of Finnmark
is characterized by fishing and agriculture. In the summer, reindeer graze
the plains. Rejoin the ship in Hammerfest, the world’s northernmost
town.
MIDNIGHT SUN CONCERT
May 16-August 15, 1 hour: In Tromso, enjoy a nighttime concert at the
Arctic Cathedral. If you’re lucky, as the church resounds with Norwegian
folk melodies, psalms and classical song, the midnight sun will come
streaming in. A truly memorable experience.
MIKKELGAMMEN : HAMMERFEST
June 20-August 15, 1 hour, 20 minutes: Immerse yourself in Sami
culture. Compare gamme, the turf huts Sami live in today, with goahti,
the traditional versions. Listen to Sami folk stories and the singing known
as joik, while you sample Sami delicacies. You’ll also learn about duodji,
Sami handicrafts, and will have the chance to purchase some souvenirs if
you like.
HARSTAD : SORTLAND
All year, 4-1/4 hours: This excursion takes you on a journey from Viking
times, through the Middle Ages, and up to present day. First, you’ll visit
Trondenes Church, the northernmost medieval church, then on to the
local historical center, where a millennium’s worth of history is presented
in original objects, smells and sounds. Feast your eyes on the
ever-changing landscape on the drive across Hinnoya from Harstad

Trollfjord onboard the MS Orca, your sea eagle safari begins. Fish is
brought onboard to feed these magnificent birds. Keep your camera

in Europe.” At the village of Myrdal, you’ll transfer to the Flam Railway.
A marvel of Norwegian engineering, it is one of the world’s steepest railway
lines on a normal gauge. The trip begins at 2,841 feet above sea level
and spirals around and through the mountain. Along the way, you’ll see
spectacular mountains, steep ravines, lush valleys and the thundering
Kjos Waterfall. Lunch in Flam on your own. Later in the afternoon, embark
on a ferry ride to the picturesque village of Balestrand. There you’ll dine

Today you will travel to Lake Vanern, the third largest lake in Europe, and

the chance to visit it and a variety of museums and sights. At Sjortorp,

DAY 4: VADSTENA
After passing through locks and lakes and by fortresses, your vessel
reaches the medieval town of Vadstena, celebrated for its narrow
streets, wooden houses and handmade lace. Here you’ll visit the
convent founded by Saint Birgitta in the fourteenth century and built
to her design. In the evening you will stop at the industrial town of
Motala, where you may visit the Motor Museum, known for its
collection of antique cars and motorcycles. Motala is where the
Swedish naval officer, statesman and architect of the Gota Canal, Baltzar

DAY 5: BORENSBERG : BERG
In Borensberg, you will see a manually operated lock and visit the
well-known Gota Hotel, built in 1908. Later your vessel will pass over two
aqueducts before reaching the Carl Johan lock stairway in Berg, the

DAY 6: SODERKOPING
Founded in the thirteenth century, Soderkoping is an idyllic town that
served as an important port during the Hansa period. It also has a long
and fascinating history as a spa. You’ll have some leisure time here
before the vessel crosses open water on the Baltic and then weaves

DAY 7: BIRKA : STOCKHOLM : DISEMBARKATION
The Viking community of Birka, on the island of Bjorko, is regarded by
many as Sweden's first town. It was designated a UNESCO World
Heritage site in 1993. A vibrant trading center for some 250 years, it was
abandoned by the end of the tenth century, possibly because the
Sodertalje had become too shallow for trade ships. Later, you will pass
the seventeenth-century Drottningholm Palace, home to the Swedish

DAY 4: FLAM : THE SOGNEFJORD
Arrival in Flam. Beautiful Flam is situated in the innermost part of the
Aurlandsfjord, a tributary 127 miles long and up to almost a mile deep,
Sognefjord. We recommend you to try the Flam Railway–an
incredible train journey from the mountain station at Myrdal on the
Bergen Railway, down to Flam station. On the 12-mile train ride you'll see
rivers that cut through deep ravines, and waterfalls that cascade down
the sides of steep, snow-capped mountains. Departure from Flam.
You sail toward Gudvangen in Naeroyfjorden, the most beautiful and
spectacular arm of Sognefjorden. The fjord is 10 miles long, and the
width is only 224 yards at its most narrow. After visiting Naeroyfjorden,
you head for Geirangerfjord. [B/L/D]
DAY 5: THE GEIRANGERFJORD
You arrive in Geirangerfjord. The Geirangerfjord is called the most
beautiful fjord in the world. Among other sights, you will see the famous
waterfalls named “The Seven Sisters." Your next stop will be in Alesund.
Alesund's beautiful Art Nouveau architecture is known far and wide. The
myriad of turrets, spires and beautiful ornamentation that give the town
its distinctive character are like something from a fairy tale. Then, go on
a guided tour in the city, or spend the time on land on your own. You are
sailing out from Alesund, leaving the coast of More, heading for
Trondelag and the regional capital of mid-Norway—Trondheim. [B/L/D]

DAY 6: TRONDHEIM
Trondheim holds a special place in Norwegian history and culture. It was
the first capital of Norway, and is still the city where new kings receive
their ceremonial blessing. Today Trondheim is a modern city, a center
of knowledge with a highly respected university, many popular colleges
and a research community ranking among the best in Europe.
The well-known cathedral, Nidarosdomen, is only one of many sights
well worth visiting in Trondheim. Time on your own. You are leaving the
coast of Trondelag, heading for the Lofoten Islands. [B/L/D]
DAY 7: LOFOTEN ISLANDS
Beautiful Reine is the first place you arrive at in Lofoten. Reine is a
traditional fishing village in the municipality Moskenes, farthest out on
mainland Lofoten. After visiting Reine, see the 62-mile-long Lofoten Wall
rising from the sea. This seemingly solid, jagged mountain range
shelters the many fishing stations, including Stamsund and Svolvaer,
from the sea to the west. You arrive in Svolvaer in the afternoon for
sightseeing or time on your own. You head north toward the beautiful
Trollfjorden and the Vesteralen region. In addition to the dramatic
geography, Trollfjorden is well known for the battle between fishermen
using the new steamboats and the fishermen still using the traditional
boats built in 1880. [B/L/D]
DAY 8: BJARKOY
Early in the morning, you arrive at Bjarkoy, just outside Harstad. This
municipality consists of 365 islands. The nature on the islands varies from

great mountains to hills, woods and bare rock faces. In the summer you
can enjoy one of the beautiful white beaches out here. At the northern
side of Bjarkoy you find the bird cliffs named Krykkjeberg with up to
10,000 birds nesting. On your way toward Tromso, you sail along the
second largest island of Norway, Senja. This is a lush island in the mouth
of the fjord, with former fishing villages and places with lots of
traditions. You spend the afternoon on a guided tour, or you may
discover the city on your own. The famous cathedral, Ishavskatedralen, is
a must, and so is the Arctic experience centre Polaria. Your journey
continues north. In the east you can enjoy the view of the spectacular
mountains of Lyngsalpene. [B/L/D]
DAYS 9-10: HONNINGSVAG : THE NORTH CAPE
Honningsvag is a prominent fishing harbor and the capital of North
Cape. Approximately 4,000 - 5,000 ships arrive here each year. The North
Cape Museum contains local coastal culture and a very pleasant host
and hostess. You sail around the cape, leaving the Norwegian coast,
heading for Svalbard. The voyage to Longyearbyen takes approximately
2 days. If ice and weather conditions allow, you will land at Bjornoya (the
Bear Island). [B/L/D]
DAY 11: LONGYEARBYEN
Arrival in Longyearbyen. A guided tour in town and the local areas will
give you an introduction to the exciting history of Longyearbyen. You
also visit Svalbard Museum and Gallery Svalbard. You will have lunch at
Longyearbyen's historic hotel, Spitsbergen Hotel. Time on your own. You

sail out of Adventfjorden from Longyearbyen, heading for Barentsburg,
the Russian mining town in Gronfjorden. Sightseeing and an optional
folklore show at the cultural house are offered while being on land in
Barentsburg. At nighttime, you sail northward out from the Isfjord, then
along the coast of the Prins Karls Forland. [B/L/D]

further on to the magnificent Magdalenefjord. At Gravneset you make
your first landing with the tender boats. Gravneset is well known for its
many visual, cultural monuments from the whaling period on Svalbard.
The additional program for Monday and Tuesday is based on the
existing weather and ice conditions. Most likely, you will get to see the
walrus colony at Moffen Island. You'll cross the 80th parallel, visit
Grahuken—the outermost in Woodfjorden and the trapper station in
Mushamna. Tuesday: In the afternoon, MS Nordstjernen is sailing

Arrival in Longyearbyen. Disembarkation from MS Nordstjernen. Time
on your own before the anniversary cruise is rounded off with a lunch at
the Radisson SAS Polar Hotel Spitsbergen. Transfer from the hotel to the

DAY 16: RETURN TO U.S.

Arrival in Ny-Alesund. Ny-Alesund has an exciting history based on both
coal mining and polar exploration. Today the settlement is a modern

Today you'll have reached the northern parts of the Prins Karls Forland
Island, with its sharply-peaked mountains on all sides surrounded by
massive glaciers that will take your breath away. Continue past the
majestic Kongsfjord to the international research center of Ny-Alesund,
also the starting point for many 1920s expeditions trying for the North
Pole, and join the guided tour. Proceed north to the Magdalenefjord,
one of the most beautiful fjords in Spitsbergen. Thousands of rare auks
can be found here, and whales can be spotted. Then enter into the
Smeerenburgfjord, another stunning fjord. In Zodiacs, you’ll cross the
narrow sound to Virgohamna. This was the starting point of the ill-fated
1897 Swedish expedition to reach the North Pole by balloon. [B/L/D]
DAYS 7-10: HINLOPEN STRAIT : AUSTFONNA GLACIER
King Winter never truly relaxes his grip on Spitsbergen’s east coast,
majestic in its infinite silence. Here are some of Svalbard’s most desolate
regions, including Nordaustlandet, the second largest island, almost
completely enveloped by two enormous glaciers. The front of the larger
one, Austfonna, is 124 miles wide. Weather permitting, you’ll make a
Zodiac landing to encounter the glacier ice up close. (Early season route
for those eager to see lots of ice and birds: travel north along
Nordaustlandet, via Wahlenbergfjord, then on in the direction of
Sjuoyane. Later season route: sail via Edgeoya, Storfjord and around the
Southern Cape. These cruises go further east, and may perhaps sail
around all of Spitsbergen.) [B/L/D]
DAY 11: LONGYEARBYEN : DISEMBARKATION : OSLO
After disembarking, transfer with your guide to the airport for your return

The ship continues round the northeastern corner of Spitsbergen,
entering the spectacular Woodfjord. Today’s goal is to reach the 80°

Zodiac landing to personally experience the startling beauty of this

You sail toward the beautiful fjord of Hornsund where you make
landings either at Gashamna or Treskelodden. In the evening you will
either take a walk up to Treskelen to enjoy the beautiful scenery of

glacier paradise. You'll sail toward an area where the chances of seeing
whales are quite high, and if you are lucky you can enjoy the sight of

DAY 7: NY-ALESUND : KROSSFJORD : SORGATTET
Arrival in Ny-Alesund, the world's northernmost settlement. Guided walk
in town, with information about the history of coal mining
and exploration. Time for an individual walk around, museum visit and
souvenir shopping. Embark for Ny-Alesund. Sail into the Krossfjord, with
possibilities for landings in the areas of Ebeltofthamna or Signehamna,
or the captain may choose to cruise toward the Lilliehook glacier. Around
midnight, sail through the beautiful Sorgattet. [B/L/D]
After lunch, make a PolarCirkel boat landing either at Kinnvika or in the
Sorgfjord area. Then cross the 80th parallel sailing by the Moffen Island.

Greenland. The town lies just north of the Arctic Circle and is one of the
best places to observe native wildlife. In the early 1960s, musk oxen
were introduced to Kangerlussuaq from Northeast Greenland, and
today they count over 5,000. Here you'll be met by your guide. Transfer
to the MS Fram by motorcoach and then PolarCirkel boats to start your
Greenland adventure. An informative welcome meeting is held
onboard. The next six days will be filled with opportunities to experience the fascinating Inuit culture, spectacular icebergs, numerous
species of whales and seals, an abundant bird life including the whitetailed eagle, the unique Arctic flora and, weather permitting, the

Qeqertarsuaq ("largest island") is your next stop, located on the
southern tip of the island with the same name. This is the largest island
along the Greenland coast, with the population of 1,100. Take a guided
walk through this small fishing and hunting town, set in wonderful
surroundings at the foot of the impressive Basalt Mountains on your way
to Blaesedalen ("the valley of the winds"). The starting point of your hike
is Rodeelv ("the red river"), where you'll be rewarded with spectacular
views of majestic mountains and cascading waterfalls. For dog sledding
enthusiasts, today's optional excursion that takes place on the Lyngmark
Glacier is a must. There will be a lecture onboard about the Arctic
station and about the flora and fauna in Greenland. [B/L/D]
Ilulissat is the third largest town in Greenland and it is set in marvelous
surroundings at Jakobshavn Isfjord. Enormous icebergs run aground
here at the mouth of the fjord, originating from the Jakobshavn Glacier,
the most productive glacier in the world. Ilulissat is the metropolitan
centre of the Disko Bay area and this aspect will be the theme of our
guided tour, together with the town's long-standing history. The most
important trades in Ilulissat are fishing and tourism. You have the
possibility to join optional tours: boat trip to the Icefjord; hiking to the
glacier; and a helicopter trip to the glacier of Ilulissat. [B/L/D]

In the morning arrive in Uummannaq, situated in beautiful surroundings
at the foot of the heart-shaped mountain. Life in a small village is the
topic for the guided tour. Hunting and fishing are the main trades here,
and the most important species of fish is the halibut. The halibutprocessing factory is the town's major source of employment. Here, you
may visit the magnificent church and the old-turfed house. You can
participate in an optional hiking tour to Santa's summer cabin or an
optional excursion to Qilakitsoq, where you can see the famous graves
of the 500-year-old mummies. In the afternoon arrive in Ukkusissat
("soapstone"); this most northern point was named by a nearby
soapstone deposit. This village is set in spectacular scenery nestling
between the magnificent mountains of the municipal borough of

DAY 7: EVIGHEDSFJORDEN
During the day we will sail into these beautiful fjords surrounded by
majestic mountains and glaciers. Here you may see the highest peak in
West Greenland, Naparutaq, which looms about the northern side of the

places on Earth were you really feel small in comparison to nature itself.

and was named after the small sandy beach in front of the village. You
can attend a presentation onboard, and hear the lecture given by a

DAY 8: AT SEA
We will sail as far north as possible and hope to reach 80° north. This will
depend on ice and weather conditions. [B/L/D]
DAY 9: QAANAAQ (THULE)
Qaanaaq district was the first part of Greenland to be colonized by Inuits
from the west. The district is among the northernmost inhabited places
on Earth. Here you may visit the "Ultima Thule" souvenir shop with
genuine and original artwork and crafts from the Qaanaaq district on a
town walk. Hike up behind the town and view the marvelous scenery,
or experience a drum dance onboard the vessel to learn more on the

The ship will negotiate the narrow passage between Booth Island and

You’ll board PolarCirkel boats and—depending upon the weather—
make a number of landings:
• Whaler's Bay, on Deception Island, with its warm springs and black
volcanic sand.
• Half Moon Island, a crescent-shaped collection of islets sharing a
sweep of shingle beach, is a rookery for chinstrap penguins, and home
to kelp gulls, terns, skuas and sheathbills.
• Yankee Harbor, home to a variety of seals and an estimated 4,000
gentoo penguin pairs. It is a common feeding area for whales as well.
• Whaler's Bay, on Deception Island used to be a whaling station, but
now is home to several scientific colonies. You'll walk its black volcanic
beach and maybe take a dip in its warm spring.
• Almirante Brown, in Paradise Harbor, has glorious scenery of snowy
peaks, ice cliffs and sculpted bergs.
• Port Lockroy is one of the top tourist sites in Antarctica, as well as
an important British base, where postcards postmarked "Antarctica"
can be purchased.
• Neko Harbor's water has a fine mirror finish, flecked with bits of
berg. There is an icy hush to the place, broken only by honking penguins and the rumble of glaciers calving into the sea.
• Petermann Island is inhabited by the southernmost colony of
gentoo penguins, a rookery of Adélie penguins and blue-eyed shags.
• Cuverville Island boasts the largest known colony of gentoo penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula.
• Wilhelmina Bay is a feeding ground for whales and seals.
• Antarctic Sound, where huge mile-long tabular icebergs can be
seen. The sound is also home to an estimated half million Adélie
penguins as well as gentoo penguins, leopard seals and killer whales.
• Brown Bluff, on the coast of the Antarctic Sound at the tip of the
Antarctic Peninsula. Adélie penguins, gentoo penguins, kelp gulls and
Cape petrels can be found here, and Weddell seals are regular visitors.
DAYS 11-12: SOUTH GEORGIA
Disembark in Grytviken, an abandoned whaling station. Wander through
the town, and visit the old manager’s villa, now the South Georgia
Museum, and the little white church brought all the way from Norway. If
you go to the cemetery, where the great explorer, Sir Earnest Shackleton,
is buried, you are likely to spy young elephant seal pups, king and
gentoo penguins, and timid pintail ducks. You’ll also visit Cooper Bay,

• Marguerite Bay, rarely visited even by Antarctic standards, dotted
with ice-covered islands and surrounded by pristine, mountainous
scenery. It is home to the only known breeding colony of emperor penguins on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula. This rookery itself is
specially protected for environmental reasons and cannot be entered
but you will have the opportunity to spot for the emperors nearby.
There are several bases in Marguerite Bay, both new and old. Rothera
Station on Adelaide Island is the British Antarctic Survey's largest base
and logistics centre for the Antarctic. It has modern laboratories and
facilities for a wide range of research. Stonnington Island is home to
the 1950s-era British “Base E” and the historic “East Base” of the
United States expedition of 1939-41. Rear Admiral Richard Byrd picked
the site of the base himself, naming the island for the hometown of
another famous explorer from the United States, Nathaniel Palmer.

The MS Midnatsol has a modern design, with an extensive use
of Norwegian materials. The name, Midnatsol, means
“Midnight Sun” and the ship’s interior is dedicated to the
Norwegian summer. Large glass expanses allow the outside
light to enter, along with extraordinary views. She has a large,
two-story panoramic lounge on the two upper decks and a top
deck with saunas, a gym, a bar and a large sundeck with a
small swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Deck 5 houses the main
restaurant, cafés, an arcade with playroom, shops and lounges.
Deck 8 also has several lounges, including an Internet café,
TV lounge and a library. There are 23 beautifully appointed
suites, some with a balcony. All cabins have telephones. The
suites and inside cabins all have TVs.
The MS Trollfjord has a winter theme with a modern design,
featuring Norwegian wood and stone throughout the interior.
Large windows have been installed throughout the ship to let
the light and scenery into the public areas, and even the
elevators are made out of glass. The works of Norwegian
artists decorate the ship’s interior. The sauna and fitness area,
as well as the small swimming pool and Jacuzzi, are located on
the top deck, where passengers can enjoy the spectacular
views from the large, outdoor area or from the panoramic
balcony. On Deck 8 are numerous bars, panoramic areas, a
library, an Internet café and deck 5 Houses two restaurants

in Art Nouveau style, reminiscent of the first Coastal Voyage

HURTIGRUTEN This document is issued by Hurtigruten ASA to,
and accepted by, the passenger subject to the
important terms and conditions which appear below.
Please read all the provisions carefully as they contain
important limitations on the rights of passengers to
assert claims against Hurtigruten ASA, Norwegian
Coastal Voyage Inc. (also doing business as
"Hurtigruten"), its agents, employees and the vessel.
THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS TICKET
APPLY TO THE SEA PASSAGE AS WELL AS TO ALL
OTHER PRODUCTS OR SERVICES OF ANY KIND
WHATSOEVER PROVIDED FOR OR ARRANGED BY
HURTIGRUTEN ASA OR BY NORWEGIAN COASTAL
VOYAGE INC., THEIR AGENTS OR INDEPENDENT
CONTRACTORS. THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS
REPRESENT THE ENTIRE AGREEMENT AND A
BINDING CONTRACT BETWEEN HURTIGRUTEN
ASA (AND NORWEGIAN COASTAL VOYAGE INC.)
AND THE PASSENGER. THE PASSENGER'S
ACCEPTANCE OF THIS TICKET CONSTITUTES THE
PASSENGER'S CONSENT TO THESE PROVISIONS.
THESE PROVISIONS SUPERSEDE ANY ORAL OR
WRITTEN REPRESENTATIONS. ANY CHANGE IN
THESE PROVISIONS MUST BE IN WRITING SIGNED
BY THE PRESIDENT OF HURTIGRUTEN ASA OR BY
THE PRESIDENT OF NORWEGIAN COASTAL
VOYAGE INC.
In consideration of the receipt of full fare,
Hurtigruten ASA agrees to transport the passenger
on the following terms and conditions:
1. Responsibility of Norwegian Coastal
Voyage Inc.
A. Norwegian Coastal Voyage Inc. ("NCV") acts
only as a sales agent on behalf of its principal,
Hurtigruten ASA ("Company"). As a result, NCV,
although a party to this Ticket Contract, is not
responsible nor is it liable for any circumstance
whatsoever arising in connection with services
rendered to the passenger except for loss or
injury that arises out of NCV's gross negligence
or willful misconduct.
B. The transport of passengers and baggage on
the ships is provided solely by the Company under
the terms and conditions of this ticket.
2. Fares
The fare set forth in this ticket is stated in U.S.
dollars, is per person based on double occupancy
and does not include land arrangements or
services, unless otherwise expressly agreed in
writing by the Company or NCV. The fare does
not include items of a personal nature, including but
not limited to, laundry, liquor, beer or wines. The
fare, taxes and surcharges are subject to change
without notice up to twenty days prior to the
scheduled embarkation date. The Company
reserves the right to collect the fare in effect at
the time, and as a condition, of embarkation.

14 days or fewer prior to the scheduled
departure date: no refund.
The foregoing schedule will apply notwithstanding
that the Company or NCV is able to rebook the
cabin in question. The passenger must submit a
claim for refund, in writing, within twenty days
of the actual termination date of the voyage in
question, failing which the refund claim shall
be barred.
4. Baggage and Other Possessions
A. Each passenger may bring aboard the ship
a reasonable amount of clothing and personal
effects without charge, subject to airline restrictions.
Under no circumstances may dangerous or illegal
articles such as firearms, knives, explosives, fireworks,
liquid oxygen, combustible or corrosive substances
or illegally possessed drugs be taken aboard the ship.
B. Pets and other animals, except for service
animals as further described in these Terms and
Conditions, are not allowed onboard the ship.
5. Fitness to Travel
A. The passenger warrants that he and those
traveling with him are each physically fit to travel
at the time of embarkation. The passenger is required
to notify NCV in writing prior to the time of booking
of any physical disability or medical condition which
may require special assistance during the voyage.
Such conditions include but are not limited to those
primarily confined to wheelchairs or scooters or who
use service animals.
B. The Company and NCV strongly recommend that
those passengers with physical disabilities or medical
conditions which may require special assistance
before, during or after the voyage be accompanied by
someone who is able to assist both ashore and at sea
as the Company is unable to offer special assistance. If
one or more ports of calls are anchorage ports, physical
conditions may prevent those passengers from going
ashore. This decision will be made by the Captain of
the ship or his designee and shall be in his sole
discretion and shall not be open to challenge at the
time or afterwards.
C. At the time of embarkation, the passenger
is responsible for having received all medical
inoculations necessary for the trip and having, in
his or her possession, the ticket, valid passport, visas
and other documents that are necessary for the
scheduled ports of call and disembarkation.
6. Non-Liability for Medical Treatment

be onboard the ship, neither the Company nor NCV
undertakes to treat or care for the passenger
medically. The doctor and the nurse, even if
designated officers of the ship, are not agents or
employees of the Company or NCV but rather
are independent contractors. Neither the Company
nor NCV shall be liable for any aspect of medical
treatment provided to the passenger, including,
but not limited to, the consequences of any
examination, advice, diagnosis, treatment,
prognosis or other services which such doctor
or nurse may furnish the passenger. It may be
necessary for the passenger to obtain shore side
medical service during or after the passage in
countries other than the United States in which a
different standard of medical care applies than to
which the passenger may be accustomed. Neither
the Company nor NCV makes any warranty as to the
quality of any such medical services.

pay for, medical services and for medication and

The passenger shall also be responsible for the
payment of any medical expenses incurred ashore.
7. Refusal to Transport
The Captain of the ship, without liability, at any time,
may refuse to transport or may land any
passenger at any port or place, or transfer the
passenger to other means of transportation,
because of health or physical conditions, mental
disorder, failure to abide by ship's regulations or any
other causes of whatsoever nature rendering the
passenger unfit to travel. The Captain's
decision shall be in his sole discretion and shall
not be open to challenge at the time or afterwards.
8. Independent Contractors
A. The passenger acknowledges that all
shore excursions, tours, airline flights, ground
transportation and hotels are either operated by
or are independent contractors. Even though the
Company and NCV shall be entitled to collect a
fee for such services, neither the Company nor
NCV supervises or controls their actions, or makes
any representation either express or implied as to
their suitability or competence. The Company
and NCV, in arranging such services, does so only as
a convenience for the passenger and the
passengers are free to use or not to use those
services. Neither the Company nor NCV assumes
any responsibility, guarantees performance or
shall be liable for any negligent, gross negligent
or intentional acts or omissions, loss, damage, injury
or delay to the passenger or the passenger's
baggage in connection with such services.
B. The fees for or costs of shore excursions, tours,
airline flights, ground transportation, hotels or any
other services that are ordered by the passenger but
are not used by the passenger are neither
refundable or exchangeable.
9. Changes in Itinerary
The Company reserves the right, at its sole option
and discretion and that of the Captain of the ship to
deviate from the ship's scheduled itinerary, to delay,
advance or cancel any sailing, to omit or change
ports of call, to arrange for substantially equivalent
transportation by any vessel, to cause the passenger
to disembark from the ship temporarily or
permanently, to tow or be towed or assist vessels, or
to perform any similar act which, in the Company's
or the Captain's sole judgment and discretion, is
justified for any reason. If the deviation is minor, of a
kind that the passenger should have anticipated
occasionally occurring or the occurrence of which is
beyond the reasonable control of the Company and
NCV, then the Company shall have no obligation to
pay a refund to the passenger. Otherwise, the
Company shall provide a refund commensurate
with the portion of the trip that did not take place.

10. Payment by the Passenger
and Other Expenses
14. Liability for Passengers and Luggage
All charges for services and products provided
onboard the ship must be settled in cash (in currency acceptable to the Company and NCV), travelers
checks, or a credit card (acceptable to the Company
or NCV) before the passenger's final disembarkation
from the ship. Any other expenses incurred by the
passenger or by the Company, or NCV, on behalf of
the passenger, shall be payable by the passenger
on demand.
Company agrees to indemnify a passenger against
loss suffered due to death or personal injury or loss
of or damage to a passenger's luggage occurring
during the carriage and occasioned by the fault or
negligence of the Company or its agents. The same
applies to loss suffered due to delay in the carriage
of passengers and to delay in the carriage or delivery
of luggage.
D. Excess -- The Company has the right to deduct
not more than the following sums from any loss
arising:
Neither the Company nor NCV shall be liable
for money, securities and other valuables such as
gold, silver, jewels, watches, ornaments, securities,
financial instruments and works of art, unless the
Company has received them for safekeeping.
The burden of proof lies on the claimant as to the
extent of the loss and as to the event having
occurred during the carriage.
3) SDR 150 per passenger in the case of damage
11. Force Majeure
A. Neither the Company nor NCV shall be liable in
any way to the passenger for death, injury, illness,
damage, delay or other loss or detriment to the person or property or the Company's (or NCV's) failure
to perform any of its obligations under this Ticket
Contract caused by Act of God, war or warlike
operations, terrorist activities, civil commotions,
labor difficulties, whether or not the Company (or
NCV) is a party, interference by authorities, requisitions
of the ship, political disturbance, inability to secure
or failure of supplies, perils of the sea, collisions,
breakdown of machinery, foundering of the ship, fire
or any other cause of whatsoever nature beyond the
reasonable control of the Company and NCV ("force
majeure events").
B. If as the result of a force majeure event (as
defined in paragraph [A] above) proceeding to,
attempting to enter, or entering or remaining at
a port may expose the ship to risk or loss or
damage or be likely to delay it, the passenger
and his or her baggage may be landed at any port or
place at which the ship may be or call, at which time
the responsibility of the Company and NCV shall
cease and this contract shall be deemed to have
been fully performed. It shall be in the ship's
Captain's sole discretion to determine whether such
an action is justified. If the passenger has not
embarked, the Company may cancel the proposed
voyage and refund the sea passage portion of the
ticket paid in advance by the passenger.
12. Compliance with Rules
The passenger agrees, during the course of
the voyage to follow the directions of the ship's
Captain or his authorized representatives. The
passenger further agrees not to solicit anyone
onboard for any commercial, professional or charitable purposes. The passenger agrees that any violation of this provision may subject the passenger to
disembarkation.
13. Choice of Law and Jurisdiction
A. Any disputes and matters of whatsoever

A. Any incident or accident resulting in personal
injury or loss of life must be reported immediately to
a ship's officer. If legal proceedings have not been

injury or loss of life within two years from the date on
which the passenger disembarked or should have
been disembarked, the claim against the Company
(and NCV) shall be time-barred. If the passenger's
death occurs after disembarkation, legal proceedings must be filed within two years from the date of
death but, in any event, shall be filed no more than
three years from the date of disembarkation, failing
which the claim against the Company (and NCV)
shall be time-barred.
3) If it is agreed or clearly understood that a
certain part of the carriage shall be undertaken by
a named sub-carrier, the Company will not be liable
for loss occasioned by an event occurring while the
goods are in the care of the sub-carrier. The above
also applies to claims against the Company which
are not based on the contract of carriage.
C. For all claims for which time bars are not
expressly stated in the Norwegian Maritime Code
(see Section 13[B] above), if legal proceedings
have not been filed as to such claims within one year
from the date on which the passenger disembarked
or should have disembarked, the claim against the
Company (and NCV) shall be time-barred.
C. Limitation of the Company's Liability -- Liability
for personal injury or loss of life shall not exceed SDR
400,000 per passenger. Liability for delay to a
passenger's journey shall not exceed SDR 4,150.

17. Interpretation
A. Should any provision of the Terms and
Conditions be invalid by virtue of the law of
any jurisdiction including but not limited to the
Norwegian Maritime Code and The Package Tours
Act (see Section 13 B above) or so held by a court of
competent jurisdiction, such provision shall be
deemed to have been severed from the Terms
and Conditions and of no force and effect and all
remaining provisions in the Terms and Conditions
shall continue to be in full force and effect.
B. The headings of the sections in the Terms and
Conditions are for convenience of reference only
and shall not define or limit any of the Terms and
Conditions.
C. Whenever the context so requires, references to
the male gender shall include references to the
female and references to the single shall include the
plural and vice versa.

Reservation and Deposit
How will I handle my laundry?
To confirm your reservation, a $300 per person
deposit is required when booking a seven day or
shorter vacation. When booking an eight-day or
longer vacation, a deposit of $600 per person
is required. Deposit is required within 24 hours
of booking. Booking information must include
passenger's full name, nationality, date of birth and
gender. Final payment is due 70 days prior to
departure. Checks, money orders, American Express,
Visa, MasterCard and Discover Card are accepted as
forms of payment.
All ships, except the two classic vessels, are
equipped with self-service laundry facilities, including
irons and ironing boards. Detergent is included in
the price.
Air Transportation
Travel is in Economy Class via IATA carriers
according to the route of the published itinerary.
All airfares are subject to change without notice. SAS,
Finnair, Icelandair or other IATA carriers are responsible only for the air travel portion of the program in
accordance with the terms and conditions of the airline ticket.
Group Bookings
Group bookings are welcome. Special booking conditions apply. Please inquire with our reservations
department for further details.
Are your ships like other cruise ships?
Though they are working ships as well as passenger
ships, most of the Norwegian Coastal ships look
and feel like cruise ships. Most of the ships
are outfitted with spacious, art-filled public areas,
exercise rooms, saunas, hair dryers in the cabins,
elevators and stabilizers. Unlike traditional cruises,
however, there is no organized entertainment
onboard. Mother Nature is the entertainer! Think of
us as your alternative to the traditional cruise.
What are the cabins like?
Cabins aboard the ships are comfortable and cozy.
Most feature two lower berths, while some have a mix
of two lower and upper/lower berths. Suites and
junior suites (some with a balcony and Jacuzzi) are
also available. All cabins have private facilities.
All ships, except the two classic vessels, have one or
more cabins that are wheelchair accessible.
What if I prefer a single cabin?
There is a limited selection of double cabins
available for single occupancy. A single supplement
charge applies.
Do you have triples?
All ships, except the two classic vessels, have
elevators and cabins specially equipped for physically-challenged guests.
Is smoking permitted onboard?
Smoking is only allowed outside on deck.
We do our best to meet special dietary requirements.
All requests for special meals have to be passed on
to us well in advance of departure.
Is there a doctor onboard?
What documents are required?
Although the ships don’t have medical facilities or
doctors onboard, they are regularly in sight of land.
Should a medical emergency arise, the reception
staff will contact a doctor at the nearest port. In
addition, onboard officers are trained in first aid and
can provide emergency assistance.
A current passport is required for U.S. and Canadian
citizens to enter Norway and the other Scandinavian
countries. A visa is not necessary.
Are there travel guides onboard?
You’ll find a travel guide (courier) onboard to clarify
practical details.
What will the climate be like?
The west coast of Norway is warmed by the Gulf
Stream, so you can expect temperatures to be
similar to those found in New England. Though temperatures vary from south to north, average temperatures range between 20 and 35 degrees Fahrenheit
in the winter and in the summer between 40 and 80
degrees Fahrenheit.
Will I experience the Midnight Sun and the
Northern Lights?
The Midnight Sun can be seen above the Arctic
Circle from mid-May to late July. The aurora borealis,
or Northern Lights, is most often seen during the winter months. Unlike the Midnight Sun, which is visible
as long as the weather is fair, the Northern Lights can
be seen only when the right atmospheric conditions
prevail.
What currency is accepted onboard?
American Express, Visa and MasterCard. Also, when
boarding you will receive a “Cruise Card,” which you
can use as form of payment, until settling your
account at the end of your cruise.

need be?
All ships have pay phones and faxes. All ships,
except the MS Lofoten and MS Nordstjernen have
Internet cafés.
What about travel insurance?
We strongly encourage passengers to purchase
travel insurance. We offer an attractively priced
policy through Trip Mate. See Rate Insert.
Are there any special savings?
Members of AARP enjoy attractive discounts on most
air-inclusive programs of $100-$150 per cabin.
What clothes should I bring?
There is no dress code on the Norwegian Coastal
Voyage ships. Most passengers wear comfortable,
casual clothing that can be layered to accommodate
weather changes. A warm sweater, a hat, gloves,
light rain gear, and a wind breaker are suggested,
and good walking shoes are vital.
What is the tipping policy?
There is a non-tipping policy on all ships. However, if
you feel that individual crew or staff members should
be rewarded for providing exceptional service, tipping is at your discretion.
How about luggage handling?
Luggage handling is available by request.
Triple cabins are available in certain cabin categories.

GENERAL INFORMATION AND TRAVEL TIPS
To confirm your reservation, a $300-per-person
deposit is required when booking a seven-day or
longer vacation, a deposit of $600 per person is
required. Deposit is required within 24 hours
departure. Checks, money orders, American
Express, Visa, MasterCard and Discover Card are
accepted as forms of payment.
There are designated smoking areas out on deck.

What are the ships like?
The MS Polar Star was built in 1969. She underwent
major rebuilding and modernization in 1988. In the
autumn of 2000, she was extended and upgraded to
meet new SOLAS and IMF regulations on safety and
environment for passenger ships. She is the first
icebreaker to be fully converted for expedition
cruising, and therefore rank highly among the small
fleet of Arctic expedition cruise ships. She is
specially equipped for expedition cruising in Arctic
waters. The ship has a comfortable restaurant, a
large lounge, a lecture room, a library and a bar. The
MS Nordstjernen, Ice Class C, was built in 1956. She
was modernized extensively in 2000, but still has the
special atmosphere of the old Atlantic cruisers. The
MS Lofoten was built in 1964 and modernized in
2003, while keeping the classic feel onboard. Both
ships are equipped with a bar, dining room, a library,
café and a panoramic lounge. There are no elevators
on the ships. All ships have a fleet of Zodiacs and
PolarCirkel boats for excursions.
Cabins aboard the ships are comfortable and cozy.

have a window or porthole. The majority of
double cabins have two lower berths with private
facilities. Two suites and four junior suites with
queen-size berths are also available. A limited
selection of double and triple cabins have
upper/lower berths with shared facilities. onboard
the MS Nordstjernen and the MS Lofoten the
majority of cabins have upper/lower berths. Cabins
are not wheelchair accessible.

There is no doctor onboard. There is access to
rescue helicopter or ship in case of an emergency or
serious illness.
Are there tour guides onboard?
We consider it a priority to have well-qualified tour
leaders and guides onboard who coordinate every
aspect of the tour and share their knowledge of
Svalbard and Arctic conditions during shore
excursions and onboard lectures.
The average temperature is approximately 41
degrees Fahrenheit with daylight around the clock.
There is normally very little rain, but fog and low
clouds can occur, especially early in the season. Even
if there is very little rain the ground is often wet
because of melting snow. Chilly winds are common,
and early in the season there are still snow-covered
areas at North-Spitsbergen.
Will I experience the midnight sun?
Yes, as long as the weather is clear, the Midnight Sun
can be seen in Spitsbergen from late April-August.
There is no dress code onboard. To be adequately
dressed on shore excursions, you should pack a pair
of hiking boots, waterproof and windproof jacket and
pants, a warm hat, a pair of windproof gloves,
inner-gloves (we recommend wool), two sets of long
underwear, a warm woolen sweater, warm socks. In
addition, we suggest two or three changes of indoor
clothing, a pair of regular shoes to wear onboard ship,
a warm jacket (down), and a pair of solid rubber
boots.
Any special tips regarding items to bring?
seals, Greenland seals, hooded seals, white-nosed
dolphins and various whales such as narwhal and killer
whales. More than 100 species of birds have been
identified in the area, and the number of plants is far
higher than might be expected so far north.
What should I know about polar bears
and safety?
Polar bears are perhaps the principal symbol of
Svalbard as a wilderness area, and it is quite something to see a polar bear in its natural habitat. Polar
bears normally do not attack humans, but they can
be extremely dangerous. Our tour guides have rifles
and also carry safety equipment, such as signal pistols, for scaring away bears. (It is very rare for tour
leaders to have to chase away bears.)
On our Spitsbergen programs NOK 50 (approx. $9)
per day will automatically be debited your Cruise
Card. Should you wish to change the amount or not
tip, contact the reception staff at the start of your
cruise.
Luggage handling is available at embarkation and
disembarkation.
How about transfers?
Bus transfers are included in Spitsbergen between
the ship/hotel and the airport. In Oslo, you’ll get
vouchers for the airport Express Train taking you
between the airport and downtown.

by Zodiac of PolarCirkel boats, and the terrain on
shore may be fairly rugged, so you should be reasonably sure-footed. Other than the landings, the tour
does not make any special physical demands on the
participants.
What are the flora and fauna like?
To protect and preserve the environment and animals
on Svalbard, around 60 percent of the archipelago has
been designated as national parks, nature reserves or
as bird or plant sanctuaries. There are only three land
mammals on Svalbard—polar bears, Svalbard
reindeer and the Arctic fox, but there are a number of
sea mammals, including walruses, ring seals, bearded
citizens to enter Norway. A visa is not necessary.
What inoculations do I need?
Inoculations are not necessary for travelers to
Spitsbergen.
Members of AARP enjoy a discount of $100 per
cabin. Also, be sure to regularly check our website
for special offers.
Are there any helpful travel guides I can
read before my trip?
Most travel guide books on Norway have a section
regarding Spitsbergen. You’ll also find a list of
suggested reading material on our website.

What are the flora and fauna like?
The sea surrounding Greenland is home to a number
of different species of whales, including the blue
whale, fin whale, humpback, minke whale, killer
whale, as well as numerous seals. There are over 50
species of birds including the Arctic tern, ptarmigan,
black guillemot, kittiwake, Brunnich’s guillemot, the
raven, as well as four protected species of birds of
prey: the snowy owl, white-tailed eagle, peregrine
falcon and the gyrfalcon. On land in West Greenland
you’ll find reindeer and musk ox. There are no forests
in Greenland, but approximately 500 different
species of plants, of which five are orchids.
What should I know about Greenland and
its people?
Greenland is the largest island in the world, with 85
percent of its area covered with ice that varies in age
from 500-100,000 years and that can be more than
9,000 feet thick. Since there are no roads connecting
towns and villages in Greenland, snow scooters, dog
sleds, airplanes and ships are utilized to get around.
Greenland is part of Denmark, but with the
introduction of Home Rule in 1979, Greenland has
moved towards relative independence based on
parliamentary democracy. The 56,000 people living
in Greenland are predominantly Inuit. Today fishing
is the all-dominating trade and accounts for 95
percent of total exports, but in the hunter districts of
the outer areas, the seal and whale catch is of great
importance. It actually forms the stable existence for
one fifth of the Greenlandic population. For
centuries the philosophy has been to live at one with
nature. The hunters live with nature and follow the
natural seasons.

Cabins are comfortable and cozy with private bathrooms with hair dryers. Each is fitted with
air conditioning, heating and a smoke alarm. All
cabins have two lower berths with private facilities.
There are a variety of elegant suites and junior
suites, which are very high in demand and should be
booked well in advance.
The ships and hotels in Santiago and Buenos Aires
have an electrical supply of 220V/50hz sockets and
one socket 110V for razors. An adapter and converter are required.

The dress code aboard the ship is casual. You should
pack comfortable walking shoes, waterproof and
windproof pants, warm sweaters, a pair of
waterproof gloves, inner-gloves (we recommend
wool), a warm hat, two sets of long underwear, a
warm woolen sweater and warm socks. In addition,
we suggest two to three changes of indoor clothing,
a pair of regular shoes or sneakers to wear onboard
the ship and a warm jacket. We recommend you
wear several layers instead of one thick piece
of clothing.
Do I need special clothing for PolarCirkel
boat landings and excursions?
All passengers will receive a wind and waterproof
jacket to keep. A sweater or fleece jacket is required
to wear underneath. You will also be lent one pair of
boots to wear over woolen socks during landings in
Antarctica. Wind and waterproof clothing is a
necessity at sea and on excursions in Antarctica.
Any tips regarding items to bring?
A small waterproof backpack for shore excursions
and trips ashore is recommended. We strongly
recommend that you bring a high UV-factor
sunblock and a pair of good quality sunglasses since
the reflections from the Antarctic sunlight and from
the ice are sometimes very strong. Since there are
limited goods in the gift store onboard you should
bring whatever toiletries you might need during the
voyage, as well as a supply of any medications you
take. Remember to bring sufficient medication to
last through any unforeseen delays. Seasickness pills
are available onboard. If you are prone to seasickness, please bring pills you are familiar with. We
strongly recommend you bring binoculars and a
camera. We advise you to bring extra batteries for
your camera, video films and any special brands of
film. (A limited supply of film is sold onboard.)

There is an English-speaking doctor, as well as
a nurse, onboard at all times. The ships have a small
medical facility with the necessary equipment
and drugs to handle emergencies. In serious
emergencies, the nearest hospital will be contacted.
The ships have expert lecturers with in-depth
knowledge of Chile, Argentina and the Antarctic.
They conduct the lectures covering various topics
during the cruise. All information onboard is given in
English, German and Spanish. Our experienced
expedition leaders will inform you about the daily
program and take you ashore.
The average low/high Fahrenheit temperature in
Buenos Aires is 60/81; Santiago 52/83; Punta Arenas
and Ushuaia between 40/56; and Antarctica 22/39.

local specialties is served. Dinner is a three-course
meal, with your choice of fish, meat or vegetarian as
main course. A selection ------of wines is available at
lunch and dinner, including various brands of the
celebrated Chilean wine. We do our best to meet
special dietary requirements. All requests for special
meals should be requested well in advance of
departure.
U.S. citizens traveling on leisure or business trips are
allowed to enter Chile and Argentina without a visa
for 90 days. However, some airport fees and taxes
will apply. In Chile, at the immigration booth, a
one-time entrance fee of US$100 must be paid in
cash in U.S. currency. In Argentina, an exit tax
of US$18 must be paid in cash. All fees are subject
to change.
Check with your local health authorities regarding
recommended vaccinations for travel to Chile and
Argentina.
What currency is accepted?

accepted onboard. The currency onboard is
Norwegian kroners. When using credit cards
onboard the ship, your account will be debited in
Norwegian kroners (NOK) with the rate of exchange
of that day. Upon arrival aboard you will receive a
Cruise Card, which works as a “credit card.” Ashore,
U.S. dollars and the local currencies are accepted—
Chilean pesos in Chile and Argentine pesos in
Argentina. Major credit cards are accepted in some
places ashore but smaller towns only accept cash in
local currency or U.S. dollars.
