1 Document Overview
These Application Notes describe the configuration steps required for the Sonus SBC9000 to interoperate
with the NEC UNIVERGE SV9500. The SBC9000 functionality was compliance tested using a SIP trunk
to NEC UNIVERGE SV8500/SV9500 from the SBC 9000.
The objective of this document is to describe the procedure to be followed during interoperability testing
of SBC 9000 series with NEC UNIVERGE SV8500/SV9500.
The interoperability tested was between NEC UNIVERGE SV9500 SIP clients and Sonus SBC 9000.
For additional information on Sonus SBC 9000 series, visit http://www.sonusnet.com .

2 Introduction
This document provides a configuration guide for Sonus SBC 9000 (Media Gateway/Session Border
Controller) when connecting to a SIP trunk group and an NEC UNIVERGE SV8500/SV9500.
The Sonus SBC9000 connects disparate SIP trunks, SIP PBXs, and communication applications. The
SBC can also be used as a SIP routing and integration engine.
The Sonus SBC is the point of connection between the SIP trunk group to PSTN and the NEC
UNIVERGE SV8500/SV9500.
2.1 Audience
This technical document is intended for telecommunication engineers for the purpose of configuring the
Sonus SBC9000 SIP trunk group together with NEC UNIVERGE SV8500/SV9500. There will be steps
that require navigating the NEC and Sonus SBC Command Line Interface (CLI). Understanding the basic
concepts of IP/Routing and SIP/RTP is also necessary to complete the configuration and for
troubleshooting, if necessary.
This configuration guide is offered as a convenience to Sonus customers. The specifications and
information regarding the products in this guide are subject to change without notice. All statements,
information, and recommendations in this guide are believed to be accurate, but are presented without
warranty of any kind, express or implied, and are provided “AS IS”. Users must take full responsibility for
the application of the specifications and information in this guide.
Technical support on the SBC 9000 can be obtained through the following:

2.3 Reference Configuration
A simulated site consisting of an NEC UNIVERGE SV9500 and a SIP trunk group to PSTN connected
over the SBC 9000.
2.3.1 Network Topology
Figure 1: Network Topology
The figure above represents the equipment used for the integration and certification testing. The
SBC9000 is used to route and facilitate calls between the PSTN and the NEC UNIVERGE SV9500.
The SBC9000 under test has 2 Ethernet ports configured. The SBC 9000 can have many physical
Ethernet ports and T1/E1 ports. For more information on media port deployment options or other network
connectivity queries, contact your local Sales team for information regarding the Sonus Network Design

3.5.1.4 Call Routing
Use Standard Routes to terminate the call to the required NEC phone. The example below is for a
specific incoming Trunk Group using a specific Domain and matching on Partition, Country Code
and the full 10-digits. Similar and less complicated Standard Routes may be required based on the
network being created.

4 NEC SV8500/SV9500 Configuration
This section assumes that the NEC Server components have been installed along with NEC users. The
user should be familiar with the NEC Server management interface. This section does not cover the basic
installation of NEC SV8500/SV9500.
4.1 NEC SV8500/SV9500 Configuration Settings
4.1.1 Addition of the SBC into the NEC SV8500/SV9500
Communication Server
This guide was created to assist knowledgeable vendors with configuring the NEC SV8500/SV9500
Communication Server with Sonus Networks GSX 9000 SIP Trunking service. It provides sample entries
for the required fields.
For questions about software and hardware installation or other PBX configuration issues, refer to the
NEC Media Gateway - Session Initiated Protocol (MG-SIP) Configuration Guide (165797-001-1-02-SV9500-PED-IP-US-Comments.pdf).
These manuals can be downloaded from NEC’s National Technical Assistance Center (NTAC) web site. A
valid dealer ID is required to access the documents.
PBX/SIP Gateways Supported:

SV8500 S8 4.19 & later

SV9500 V1 4.19 & later

MG-SIP128 SP-4058 1.05 & later
Note: Above systems/gateways can be appliance model/Software-model.

4.1.3 PBX PROGRAMMING
This does not include the basic PBX programming that is the same regardless of SIP Provider (i.e., ARTD, ARTI,
ADPC, ACSC, ACIC1, etc.). This only includes the commands that were uniquely programmed for this test environment
configuration.

4.1.4 MG-SIP Programming
Note that the assignments shown are those set for the majority of the test cases run during the inter-operability
testing. Some parameters were changed for specific tests. For example, Privacy test cases would have had the
"set privacy_pattern" changed from "0: Displayname" to a "2: RFC 3323/3325 (P- Preferred-ID / Privacy)" and
the selection of whether the P-Preferred-ID Header is included or not. The same type of changes were made to
the "set cpn_pattern" when testing the normal "userinfo" setting as well as the "anonymous" and "P-Asserted
ID" settings. The listing shows the basic data to get the equipment up and communicating. Then, if necessary,
various parameters may be fine-tuned for the customer's specific requirements.
