The Potato Council will again be hosting a dedicated
arena for the British potato industry at this year’s
Potato Europe event, being held in Emmeloord, the
Netherlands.
The British trade stand brings together 14 exhibitors representing
some of the leading businesses in seed and ware production,
technology, research & development, engineering and marketing.
Mark Prentice, the Potato Council’s head of seed and export,
says, “The Potato Europe event attracts 230 exhibitors and
15,000 visitors from over 50 countries and we’ll be there
promoting the opportunities that our businesses can offer the
international industry.
“Many of these businesses are truly at the forefront of innovation in
the potato sector worldwide. Come along and see what they can
offer your organisation.”
He emphasises that the trade stand is a forum for doing business
and meeting potential clients and suppliers. “It’s a chance to
network with other stakeholders whilst developing contacts and
building future business opportunities,” adds Mark.
The Potato Council will be there as a representative of British
potato growers and exporters and together with the Sutton Bridge
Experimental Unit (SBEU) will be profiling recent research and
development activities.

(SG) is the
National Plant
Health Authority for Scotland. SASA, a Division of
SG, provides ‘Science & Advice for Scottish
Agriculture’ and is the certifying authority for seed
potato production in Scotland. SASA manages
the Seed Potato Classification Scheme that
ensures the production of high quality seed
potatoes in Scotland through official inspections
to strict tolerances for freedom from disease and
trueness to type. SASA also liaises with importing
countries regarding phytosanitary conditions for
potato export and carries out a range of scientific
activities in support of the Scottish potato
industry. For example, Scottish seed potatoes are
derived initially from in-vitro microplants
pathogen-tested in SASA’s nuclear stock unit.

The Potato Council’s biannual British Potato Event 2009 will take
place at the end of this coming November in Harrogate, in the
north of England. A high profile and authoritative one-stop-shop
for products and services covering every aspect of potato
production and marketing, the event is directly relevant to all
involved in the potato supply chain. The previous event, in 2007
saw delegates from over 27 different countries, as well as
representatives from the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
This year’s event will include demonstrations and presentations
from world-class speakers, topical hands-on workshops and
the hugely popular industry dinner.
