A ministry

The value of
a whole must
not be assumed
to be the same
as the sum of
the values of
its parts.
~G. E. Moore, British Philosopher (1873-1958)
wholeness
Spiritual Care is concerned with the
whole person. The human spirit is not
confined to one area of the body or a
particular set of topics, e.g., religion,
theology or morality. All of life is
spiritual in the sense that meaning,
relationships, and hope are shaped by
physical, emotional, and intellectual
well-being. The mind-body-spirit
connection is evident in a health
care setting as we experience how
illness affects our spirits or how our
spirits affect physical health. Human
beings are much more complex than a
machine in which individual parts can
be attended to or exchanged without
influencing the whole.
For this reason, conversations with
a chaplain gravitate toward joys
and concerns in the broadest sense,
narrowing in on points of pain,
growth, or anxiety. A chaplain seeks
to be present with each person, gently
guiding him or her toward God’s
grace. Prayer is often a means to bring
together faith, gratitude for life, and
relationships, as well as concerns,
fears, and hopes.
A chaplain met with a woman in
her late 40s, recently diagnosed with
cancer, along with her husband.
Although the couple had no
connection to a faith community,
they shared their story with emotion
and depth. Sitting together in
the hospital room, the chaplain
expressed empathy, seeking to help
bear the weight of illness and grief.
They were heartbroken about what
the diagnosis meant to their lives.
They were joyful about the love they
shared. They discovered a spiritual
companion on this important life
journey, one who would be with
them through treatments, questions,
decisions, and many tender moments.

In partnership with HealthEast Care System, Faith Community Nurses are experienced
RNs who have additional education in faith community nursing. Faith Community
Nurses work with pastoral staff, promoting health and wellness in a faith community,
through five primary roles: health educator, health counselor, volunteer coordinator,
advocate, and integrator of the faith/health relationship. For additional information
on the HealthEast Faith Community Nurse Program or to receive a copy of the Faith
Community Nurse brochure, call Lori Anderson, R.N. – Faith Community Nurse
Coordinator, 651-232-5521.

May we discover through pain and torment, the strength to
live with grace and humor. May we discover through doubt
and anguish, the strength to live with dignity and holiness.
May we discover through suffering and fear, the strength to
move toward healing. May it come to pass that we be restored
to health and to vigor. May life grant us wellness of body,
spirit, and mind. And if this cannot be so, may we find in this
transformation and passage moments of meaning, opportunities
for love and the deep and gracious calm that comes when we
allow ourselves to move on.

Clinical Pastoral Education: “Learning the Art
of Spiritual Care”
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is
experience-based theological education,
which combines the practice of pastoral
care with qualified supervision and peer
group reflection. Utilizing a case study style
of learning, CPE learning goals include
self-awareness, pastoral skills, and pastoral
formation.
Interviews are in progress for FY10
CPE Residency, and a new brochure is
available – contact Rev. Allen Dundek,
[email protected]. Applications are
being accepted for the 2009-10 Extended
Unit of CPE (offered one day each week fall through spring).

“Everything is Spiritual”, he
presents – in a compelling
manner – the centrality of
spirituality.
In March, Rev. John Martinson, DMin – Program Director, Ministerial Health & Leadership
Resources, Fairview Health System offered an introduction to “Clergy Coaching” for HealthEast
CPE Supervisors and Mentors.
The CPE residency program is partially funded by the HealthEast Foundation. For information,

Spiritual Care Staff Notes
Sr. Geri Lane, CSJ recently retired from HealthEast Care System. She served as chaplain at
St. Joseph’s Hospital for 20 years. A Mass and reception were held in her honor, Monday,
March 30, 2009, 2 – 4 pm at St. Joseph’s Hospital, 3M Education Center. Geri’s ministry
to cardiac care patients has been, for many years, an important component of the healing
process before and after heart surgery.
On the Cardiac Care unit, a poster featuring Sr. Geri has this tribute: “Sister Geri Lane’s hands
are not famous; they’re not as skilled as those of the distinguished surgeons she works with. They
don’t operate some of the Twin Cities’ most sophisticated heart technology. But consider what they
encounter during a day. The tremble of a man who suddenly realizes he’s not eighteen. The vibration
of a pager that signals a family want to pray. No, these are not the hands of a cardiologist or a
technician. But they can get you in touch with another far more powerful healer.”
Mary Camber, Maureen Feely
and Rev. Timothy Nelson
(left to right in photo) were
honored as Board Certified
Chaplains at the Spiritual Care
Collaborative Summit ’09 in
Orlando, FL.
Congratulations to
Rev. Nancy Wigdahl
on winning 2nd
