New S.A. facility targets dementia

In Texas, there are 340,000
citizens who are currently dealing
with Alzheimer’s disease and the
resulting dementia continues to
alter the lives of their friends and
families.
There is a new facility in San
Antonio that is dedicated to
helping individuals and families
deal with memory-related issues. Memory Care America, a
company committed to provide
customized care for Alzheimer’s
and dementia residents, recently
opened their newest community,
the Memory Care of Westover
Hills.
The 45,000-square-foot, 64bed Alzheimer’s and dementia
care facility that will house patients who are currently suffering
from memory related issues.
To keep things in order, Linda
Carrasco joined Memory Care
America of Westover Hills from
Emeritus Senior Living in San
Antonio, where she served as
executive director since 2011.
While in that position, she led
the facility’s healthcare delivery,
admissions, operations, training
and marketing efforts.

“Our community is seeing a
high increase of people suffering
from Alzheimer’s disease. We are
also seeing people at early ages
becoming diagnosed with the
disease,” Carrasco told La Prensa.
“Currently, my team and I have
been working with different associations and continue to work on
preventing this from progressing
because of how quickly circumstances have changed today from
five years ago.”
According to the U.S. Census
and the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP), an estimated
5.3 million Americans of all ages
had Alzheimer’s disease in 2015.
This number includes an estimated 5.1 million people age 65 and
older and approximately 200,000
individuals under age 65 who
have younger-onset Alzheimer’s.
In order to fight the disease
head on, Memory Care of Westover Hills provides many resources
to their patients, including the
center’s personalized care program to strengthen abilities,
maximize function and promote
independence. Through that, they
will include safety precautions,
such as lighted handrails to prevent falls in the facility.
The facility will also take care
of the patients’ diets as it carries
critical components to helping
seniors enhance their health and
wellbeing, an important aspect of
the Westover Hills community
lifestyle. They will also include
a hydration program to help
residents remain hydrated with
water, juice and healthy fluids,
and comprehensive activity programs including art and music
therapy to engage both the mind
and the body.

Memory Care of Westover Hills
community with extensive experience in dementia and memory
care, which remain committed to
ongoing training and education
in order to exceed traditional
requirements. Together, caregivers and an experienced executive
director will take down statistics

leyes y ha externado deseos de ser
Senadora por Texas.
Por su parte, Cesia Flores estudia en South Texas Business,
Education and Technology Academy y es miembro de National
Technology Student Association, donde sirve con el cargo de
Tesorera. Esta organización tiene
registrados a 230 miembros en el
país. Cesia aspira a inscribirse
en Harvard Law School y se ha
fijado la meta de convertirse en
U.S. Senator.

Mayor and McDonald’s team up to promote literacy

In an effort to promote literacy
in our community, Mayor Ivy
Taylor teamed up with local
McDonald’s restaurant owners to
hand out HarperCollins children’s
books to Pre-K 4 SA students.
Reading at a young age is
important and can be critical to a
child’s future. According to studies from the Center for Improvement of Early Reading Achievement, students who grew up with
books in their homes reached a
higher level of education.
Unfortunately, there are many
families in our community who
struggle financially and are not
able to provide their young children with reading materials.
One study found that in middleincome neighborhoods, the ratio is
13 books per child; while in low-
income neighborhoods, the ratio is
one book for every 300 children.
As part of the fast food restaurant’s “Happy Meal Books”
program, launched in all greater
San Antonio-area on Feb. 2, each
student received four books on
Friday morning at the Pre-K 4 SA
South Education Center, located
at 7031 S. New Braunfels Ave.
“We understand just how important it is for our littlest citizens
to get a great start and learn to
read early,” said Mayor Taylor.
“Research showed that students
who enter first grade with just
those emergent reading skills
have to make one year of normal
growth and one year to catch up in
each of the first, second and third
grades in order for them to be at
the level that they should be by
the third grade.”
This donation by McDonald’s
is an opportunity for young children to access reading materials
that they can take home and share
them with their families. The
“Happy Meal Books” program
will include current, popular
children’s books such as “Pete the
Cat,” “Paddington,” “Clark the
Shark” and “Happy Valentine’s
Day, Mouse!”
The mayor hopes this program
will help children develop the
ability to converse, understand a
wide vocabulary and enjoy reading at a young age. “Kids that
are exposed to letters, books and
words have the most chances for
success, and so we are always
looking for more ways for kids
to read.”
Just in time for Valentine’s
Day, each book will feature a
love theme and include multiple

BBB. El día de San Valentín es
una celebración de amor, un día
entero dedicado a bañar su pareja
con flores, dulces en forma de
corazones y gestos románticos.
Por lo mismo, no es una sorpresa
que aplicaciones y sitios de citas
en línea surgen en actividad durante estas fechas.
Mientras mucha gente tiene
éxito con encontrando amor en
línea, BBB advierte sobre estafas de citas en línea que pueden
costarle dinero, todo en el nombre de amor.
Los estafadores típicamente
crean perfiles falsos en redes
sociales, sitios de citas o aplicaciones usando fotos de personas
reales y una identidad falsa. Llamado “catfishing”, el estafador
crea una relación contigo y gana
tu confianza. Después de varios
días o semanas de mensajes, el
estafador empieza preguntar sobre información personal o dinero. En unos casos, el estafador
resulta a extorción y amenazas si
no le paga o ayuda lavar dinero.
De acuerdo con el FBI, la estafa de romance en línea robó a
víctimas de todas edades más de
$200 millones el año pasado. Las
víctimas reportaron un promedio
de $5,000 a $10,000 en pérdidas
financieras. Desafortunadamente,
por la anonimidad del Internet
y la dificultad de rastrear transferencias bancarias, localizando
estos estafadores no es fácil.
El año pasado, al nivel nacional, BBB recibió más de 900
quejas contra servicios de citas
en línea. Quejas recibidas reportaron asuntos con suscripciones

Comentarios... Después de la “Chaponovela”

en la cárcel, y
México sigue
igual. O peor.
Es ingenuo

creer que la
recaptura del líder del narcotráfico, que se había escapado unos
meses antes, mejora rápida y significativamente la situación de 126
millones de mexicanos.
Es cierto que, como dijo el
mandatario Enrique Peña Nieto,
con la captura de El Chapo se ha
detenido a 98 de 122 líderes del
narcotráfico. Pero eso no debe dar
una falsa percepción de éxito. Eso
supondría que el 80 por ciento del
país está bajo control y sin narcoviolencia. No es así. A esa lista le
faltan muchos nombres.
El sexenio de Peña Nieto podría
ser más violento que el de su predecesor, Felipe Calderón. En los
primeros tres años de Peña Nieto,
hasta diciembre del 2015, fueron
asesinados violentamente 52,724
mexicanos. Eso es más de la mitad
de los 104,089 homicidios dolosos
durante el sexenio de Calderón.

No se trata tampoco de arrui
narle la fiesta del gobierno que,
muy mexicanamente (es decir, con
mucha pompa y sin preguntas de la
prensa), celebró en Palacio Nacional la tercera captura del narcotraficante. Junto al presidente estaban,
ya aliviados y justificadamente felices, los mismos funcionarios a los
que se les había escapado el líder
del cartel de Sinaloa. Pero, como
dijo el propio Chapo en la polémica
entrevista con el actor Sean Penn
en Rolling Stone: “El día que yo
no exista, no va a mermar en nada
el tráfico de drogas”.”
Todo sigue igual. O peor.
México es muy inseguro. Han
secuestrado, según cifras oficiales,
a 4,259 mexicanos desde que Peña
Nieto tomó posesión. El peso está
en franca caída (y los únicos mexicanos que se benefician son los que
reciben dólares de sus familiares en
Estados Unidos). El petróleo, cada
día más barato, ya no es salvavidas.
¿Misión cumplida? No lo creo
(aunque lo haya puesto Peña
Nieto en Twitter). En Los Pinos
necesitan a un buen historiador o
alguien que vea un poquito de tele.
Se les olvidó que esa es la misma
desafortunada frase que tantas
burlas le causó al ex presidente
estadounidense George W. Bush
tras su fatídica invasión a Irak. Se
la pusieron en una enorme manta
en un portaviones mientras él
pronunciaba un discurso hace casi
13 años. Hoy, todavía, Irak es un
desastre y México un país violento.
Dejemos, pues, la frase “Misión
Cumplida” solo para las imposibles películas de Tom Cruise.
¿Misión cumplida? ¿Cómo es
posible que hayan encontrado
dos veces al Chapo y no sepan
dónde están los 43 estudiantes de
Ayotzinapa, desaparecidos hace
16 meses?
El gobierno quiere promover su
imagen y hacer justicia a periodicazos. Y ya que la nueva política
oficial es filtrar a la prensa sus
investigaciones secretas ¿por qué
el gobierno no filtra también los
contratos de la extraña compra
de la llamada Casa Blanca por
parte de la pareja presidencial?
¿Por qué no filtra las cuentas del
ex presidente del PRI, Humberto
Moreira, detenido y luego liberado
en España? ¿Por qué no filtra los
nombres de los funcionarios que
ayudaron a escapar al Chapo?
Porque eso no está en el guion.
La Chaponovela puede desviar
la atención de los mexicanos por
un ratito pero, no es suficiente
para salvar la presidencia de Peña
Nieto.
Eso lo sabe Barack Obama.
El presidente de Estados Unidos
aniquiló a Osama bin Laden en
el 2011, pero deshacerse del líder
de Al Qaeda (que planeó los actos
terroristas del 9/11) no le hizo más
fácil la labor de gobernar. El bono
de buena voluntad le duró un par
de meses, y luego todo volvió a la
normalidad.
Lo mismo podría ocurrirle a
Peña Nieto. Que quede claro: Es
un gran logro tener tras las rejas
al principal narcotraficante del
mundo. Pero sería triste presentar
una recaptura como el mayor triunfo de su gobierno.
Tras la Chaponovela viene el
viaje del papa Francisco a México.
Será otra gran distracción. Pero
luego vendrá una primavera de
desengaño y quizás de indignación
para los mexicanos. Será como
cuando prenden las luces por la
mañana en un discoteca; no hay
manera de escaparse del asco que
produjo la noche y dejar de pisar
todo lo que hay podrido en el piso.

Extraordinaria. De Oscar. El director, Alejandro González Iñárritu
y el director de fotografía, Emmanuel El Chivo Lubeski, están
demostrando que los mexicanos
pueden competir en cualquier parte
del mundo... y ganar. México es
mucho más que su gobierno.

Just a Thought: cast your ballot
We are currently in the
midst of a primary election
cycle where
we are getting
ready to cast
Steve Walker our votes for
preferential
candidates for president, judges,
representatives, constables and
many other local offices that appear on the ballot.
This year it is a long list of
people seeking higher office. In
two recent columns, I addressed
the high number of Hispanics running for office.
Candidates from both the Republican and Democratic Party are
geared up to choose their candidates to best represent their issues
and platforms for the upcoming
general election in November.
Looking back at the history of
voting in our country, it is interesting and informative to say the least.
Back in the beginning of our
country in 1787, only white males
over 21 who owned property were
able to vote. It took the country until 1843 to allow all white men over
21 to vote. Progress comes slowly.
For you history buffs who may
have forgotten, it took until 1870
to pass the 15th Amendment to
guarantee the right to vote to all
men 21 and older regardless of
race or ethnic background. That
included freed slaves.
Imagine the excitement in 1920
when women over 21 were finally
allowed to vote with the passage of
the 19th Amendment. It was only
after they protested and marched
en masse did they receive the
right to vote. Today, 52 percent of
the eligible voters are women and
more women are being elected to
serve.
It wasn’t until 1964, when I
graduated high school, that the
24th Amendment made it illegal
for states to charge poll tax to voters. In 1965, the Voting Rights Act
authorized the federal government
to oversee voting that had discriminated and prevented blacks and
other minorities from registering
to vote or cast their ballots.
Up to that point they did so
through usage of literacy tests,
grandfather clauses and intimidation tactics. Can you imagine today
having to take a literacy test to
prove you have the right to vote?
How the accessibility to vote has
changed over the years. Makes you
appreciate the right and responsibility to cast your ballot.
In 1971, while I was still serving
in Vietnam, the 26th Amendment
lowered the voting age across the
nation to 18. I voted for president
in 1968 when I was 21 years old.
It was only in 1982 that the Voting
Rights Act Amendments allowed
further provisions for Americans
with disabilities, voters who were
not able to read and write and those
not fluent in English were added to
insure their freedoms.
Over the years, I have read numerous people complain that their
vote doesn’t really count. From
a historical view that includes
other countries, we can also see the
power of just one vote does indeed
make a difference.
For example, in 1776, one vote
gave America the English language
instead of German, and in 1868,
one vote saved President Andrew
Johnson from impeachment.
In 1876, one vote gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency of the
United States of America. Finally
in 1923, one vote gave Adolf Hitler
leadership of the Nazi Party, and in
1941, one vote saved the Selective
Service - just weeks before Pearl
Harbor was attacked. As one who
signed up with the Selective Service (aka Draft Board) at 18 and
was sent three draft notices in the
60s, I can identify with that.
It’s amazing what one vote can
do in an election. So the next time
you go to the polls, remember your
vote does count and can make a difference on who wins or loses. You
are encouraged to vote on March
1 or early vote in the primary of
your choice beginning Feb. 16 and
running through Feb. 26.
If not, there will be other candidates on the general election ballot
in November as well representing
other independent parties. It is
your choice. If you don’t vote,
someone else will vote and decide
our elected officials. Be a part of
the process and go vote!

¿A quién beneficiaría una victoria de Ted Cruz?

De los tres punteros republicanos –Ted Cruz, Donald Trump y
Marco Rubio—, Cruz es el que
menos posibilidades tiene de
vencer a la ex Secretaria de Estado
en una batalla por la Casa Blanca
en noviembre de este año.
Claro, muchos cuestionarán el
hecho que Hillary Clinton apenas
pudo vencer a Bernie Sanders en
las primarias del Partido Demócrata en Iowa. ¿Cómo es posible,
entonces, que sea ella la finalista
de los demócratas si Sanders le
está pisando los talones?
Es más, las encuestas señalan
que Hillary Clinton tiene una
probabilidad mínima para apuntarse otra victoria en el estado de
New Hampshire. Todo sugiere que
Sanders ganará con seguridad el 9
de febrero próximo.
Sin embargo, las encuestas
también demuestran que Hillary
Clinton tiene el campo libre en
los otros estados. El populismo
de Sanders, el cual es bienvenido
y elogiado, no ha alcanzado a
persuadir al electorado demócrata
en las ciudades cosmopolitas de
los estados más poblados de la
nación, especialmente de los grupos minoritarios.
En Nevada y el Sur de Carolina,
estados en que se llevarán a cabo
las elecciones primarias en unos
20 días, los dos demócratas estarán celebrando victoria. Hillary
Clinton seguramente se apuntará
Nevada; el Sur de Carolina puede
ser para cualquiera de los dos.
Posiblemente las elecciones
que decidan al vencedor de los
demócratas es el Super Tuesday
del 27 de febrero. El electorado
de 14 estados, más los votantes
del protectorado de Samoa, estarán
acudiendo a las urnas para elegir al
candidato de su preferencia.
Si las cosas marchan como
anuncian los estudios analíticos y
las encuestas, Hillary Clinton estaría representando a los demócratas en las elecciones generales
de noviembre después del Super
Tuesday.
El “retorno” a la Casa Blanca de
Hillary Clinton contra un candidato joven, coherente y “moderado”
como Marco Rubio sería una
batalla que finalmente decidiría la
comunidad latina en los estados
considerados “swing states”, como
Nevada, Nuevo Mexico, Colorado
y Florida, entre otros. Rubio es
cubano-americano, pero no es frecuentemente reconocido como “latino” por los méxico-americanos y
otros grupos de latinos.
Si los votantes republicanos
deciden llevar a Donald Trump a
las elecciones generales, la batalla
a la presidencia se convertiría en un
programa televisivo virtual. Algunos sectores del voto independiente
tenderían a apoyar las políticas
anti-inmigrantes e intolerantes
de Trump. Muy lamentable, por

la boca platillos que a la vista se
ven deliciosos. Por igual bebidas,
ya sea simplemente un vaso con
agua, refrescos de su preferencia,
ya sean de sabor regular o de dieta, por igual cervezas de marca nacional, internacional y domésticas
(embotelladas y producidas por
pequeñas cervecerías), licores de
alto contenido de alcohol, vinos
con o sin contenido de alcohol.
De acuerdo a un estudio lle
vado a efecto en Japón, en el que
se realizó entrevistas a más de
mil personas, la investigación
encontró que para llegar a tener
larga vida es importante el consumo a diario de productos del
campo (vegetales y frutas). Sin
dejar fuera de su vida cotidiana
la práctica de ejercicios.
Por consiguiente, en lo personal
estoy de acuerdo en seguir dicha
rutina alimenticia y deportiva:
comer más vegetales, fruta (de
temporada fresca) y dejar fuera
las bebidas gaseosas y de contenido alcohólico.

para llenar la alacena y el refrige
rador con productos baratos, los
cuales pueden ayudar en el ahorro
del presupuesto, pero a largo
plazo nos dejan malas experiencias en el sistema digestivo.
Lo digo con certeza, porque
recientemente me surtí de un tipo
de cereal barato cuyo empaque se
veía igual al producto de mayor
precio.
Al poco de media hora, en los
dos primeros desayunos de la
semana laboral en los que incluí
el cereal barato, ya tenía hambre,
como si no hubiera comido nada,
y, además me produjo un malestar
estomacal (gases), por lo que tuve
que echar mano de mi bebida
preferida: el té de manzanilla con
trozos de canela.
Al tercer día decidí comprar el
cereal caro al que estaba acostumbrado, mi digestión fue normal y
mi estómago retomó su forma.
Mi desayuno consiste en beber
agua o té antes de comer cereal
acompañado de fruta, un par de
blanquillos sobre un pan galleta
multigrano tostado (Waffle Multigrain), al que le adhiero miel y
crema de queso.
Mi cena consiste de ensalada
y fruta, con un sándwich de
pechuga de pavo. Pescado y camarones fritos acompañados de
porciones pequeñas de ensalada
de repollo y espinacas, pechuga
de pollo con verduras, así como
caldos de pollo y de vez en cuando
de res.
Cuando llego a sobrepasarme
en mi dieta comiendo lo que no
debo comer, entonces es cuando
me llega el arrepentimiento su
friendo las consecuencias.
En apoyo a mi consistencia
para continuar comiendo plati
llos saludables, me he dedicado
a buscar información, surfeando
la red y leyendo revistas de salud
y ejercicio físico. En ambas fuen-
tes informativas he aprendido a
extenderme en mis testimonios
de salud y lo he llevado a efecto
personalmente.
Para quienes deseen no subir de
peso, les recomiendo visitar sitios
donde encuentren información
sobre cómo llevar una mejor
calidad de vida, lo mismo para
perder peso y estar por lo menos
sin riesgos de elevar el colesterol
y la presión arterial.
Por lo que debemos de seguir
teniendo cuidado con los productos con que llenamos la alacena y
el refrigerador.
Les diré a mis tres lectores
que el cereal barato que en par
de ocasiones perjudicó mi rutina
alimenticia por la mañana se lo
puse a la vista a los madrugadores
pájaros que siempre están en espera de que les tire al piso (en el
patio de mi residencia). ¡Y no me
lo van a creer! Ni tan siquiera se
“desplumaron” para bajar de los
árboles y tomar en sus picos el
mencionado cereal.
Me tuve que ver en la necesidad
de volverlo a echar en el mismo
paquete y tirarlo a la basura. Lo
bueno es que tenía una barra de
pan casi con fecha de vencimiento
y opté por hacerla migajas y
dárselas.
Lo curioso fue que desde la
ventana de la cocina, observé,
detalladamente, que cada una de
las especies de pájaros descendía
como si fueran “misiles” de caída
directa al producto que ya cono
cían. Algunos volaban a sus res
pectivos nidos, otros buscaban el
depósito de agua que a diario les
dejo a mi par de felinos, Katarino
y Kitty Kitty. Ambos son responsables de mantener alejados de mi
propiedad a roedores nocturnos.

Kitty desde pequeños los he alimentado con comida enlatada de
marcas de prestigio, pero tengo un
problema con los dos. A Katarino
le gusta la comida para canes y a
Kitty Kitty la comida para felinos,
de preferencia la que trae sabor
de marisco.
Los dos lucen una piel oscura
relumbrosa, como si fueran gatos
de la alta sociedad. Lo bueno de
ambos es que solos se bañan y
solos se peinan. Hacen lujo de su
independencia personal, pero a la
hora de la comida son exigentes y
si me tardo un poco de inmediato
comienzan a maullar y a lanzarme
“cariñosos” zarpazos.
Por último, en breve les comento que mi hijo, que es ingeniero
mecánico, recientemente me
agarró en curva cuando le ponía
aceite barato a mi van (Nissan
modelo 2009), y me indicó que
no era bueno echarle aceite barato
porque con ello estaría dañando
poco a poco la consistencia del
motor y el sistema de inyección.
Me sugirió comprar aceite de
alto grado y de marca superior a
la que iba a usar. Le hice caso y
fui a la tienda de autopartes para
comprar aceite de motor Pennzoil
Ultra Platinum de 1 cuarto de
galón por el que pague más de $9.
Desde que tengo la van, mi hijo
se ha encargado de hacerle periódicamente los cambios de aceite,
por lo que llego a la conclusión
de que también a los automóviles,
para darnos largo servicio se les
debe hacer cambios de aceite del
“bueno”.

Smoking—we can’t ignore the facts

I have no doubt that you have
heard it more than once—you
need to quit smoking.
This article is going to discuss
all the ways smoking can harm
your health. As a one-time closet
smoker, I am not trying to tell
you what to do. I will present
the medical facts as the Centers
for Disease Control does, and
you can make the right decision
for yourself.
Most patients that I see do not
seem to worry too much about
the risk of lung cancer. Everyone
has a relative who was a smoker
who never had a single health
problem and lived into their 90s.
My great-grandmother was one
of those people.
I ask patients to quit smok-
ing anyway because most of us
aren’t that lucky. I would also argue that most people have other
habits that, when you add them
up, put them at higher risk than
if they only smoked. When my
great-grandmother was young,
she walked to school, walked to
work and walked to the store.
She cooked high protein, high
fiber meals like beans and rice,
ate organic meats because she
killed the pigs and chickens
herself, and ate all the vegetables
she farmed.
The “Pick McTwo” did not
exist; I doubt she was ever over
110 pounds on a five foot frame.
Nowadays, we are slowly losing
the ability to walk because everything is drive thru or delivered,
and our food can sit on a shelf
for 10 years without going bad.
Vegetable? What’s that? Most
of us will not be lucky enough
to have great health without the
kind of effort people like my
bisabuela put out. If you believe
smoking is not doing you any
harm, you are kidding yourself.
Smokers are at greater risk for
heart and blood vessel disease, as
well as stroke. Even people who
smoke less than five cigarettes
a day can have early signs of
heart disease. It causes COPD.
Smoking can also make it harder
for a woman to get pregnant and
can affect men’s sperm as well.
There is a higher risk of preterm
delivery and increase risk of birth
defects.
Smoking causes weakening
of the bones and causes gum
disease and tooth loss, and can
cause cataracts. Smoking is a
cause of Type II diabetes and can
make it harder to control your
sugar. The risk of developing
diabetes is 30-40 percent higher
for smokers than for non-smokers. Smoking makes it harder for
you to fight infection and for you
to heal wounds. Smoking is also
a cause of rheumatoid arthritis.
A recent study was published
in the “Journal of Clinical Oncology” that demonstrated that
women who continued to smoke
after being diagnosed with breast
cancer were 25 percent more
likely to die than never smokers
from breast cancer. They were
also more likely to die from
respiratory cancer, lung disease
or heart disease.
The women who quit after
they were diagnosed with breast
cancer were much less likely to
die. Smoking also increases your
risk of the following cancers:
bladder, blood cervix, colon and
rectum, esophagus, kidney and
ureter, throat, liver, pancreas,
stomach and lung cancer.
If nobody smoked, one of
every three cancer deaths in the
US would not happen.
Please quit smoking.
Beginning at Age 50, men and women at average risk for developing

Foot Locker Three-Point Contest on Feb. 13 and

Bowl brings all Americans together. This event is comparable
only to the Oscars award ceremony or the Olympic Games.
As an immigrant, it’s a way for
us to feel like any other citizen
of this country. This is one of the
few common denominators left in
American society, and everyone
talks about it the week before and
the Monday after; it’s an event
that transcends sports.
John Sutcliffe: The Hispanic
community is currently the largest minority group in the United
States; those who have been here
a while have grown up to become
fans of American sports, and the
NFL is no exception. As Latinos
gain a more relevant place in the
country’s demographics due to
our expanding population, the
number of Hispanic NFL fans
continues to grow.
Kary Correa: More and more
media outlets are interested in
covering the NFL, and that makes
it easier for us to bring the sport
to all audiences.
What do the NFL and the
Super Bowl represent for Latinos?
John Sutcliffe: It means an
opportunity for families to get together, enjoy traditional snacks,
watch a show; a lot of people tune
in just to watch the halftime show
and not necessarily the game. The
Super Bowl, sort of like Thanksgiving, is a day for families to
enjoy a few hours of American
football and also a great event. It
is the perfect excuse for a family
reunion.
Raúl Allegre: Many Hispanics currently living in the United
States have already spent a considerable amount of time in this
country, and many Latinos are
second- or third-generation.
American football is now the
most popular sport, and people
have grown up watching it or
playing it at school.
Are you seeing Hispanics
make their presence known in
the NFL?
Raúl Allegre: There are now a
lot of players of Hispanic descent
in the NFL, and one prime example is Ron Rivera, one of Super
Bowl 50’s head coaches and the
son of a Puerto Rican father and
a Mexican mother. We’re seeing
outstanding players with Spanish
last names everywhere. Most of
them are sons of immigrants, but
they were raised in the U.S. and
had the chance to start playing
from a very early age. For those
who come from abroad, I think
it’s crucial that they study here
so they can start playing college
football, which is the stepping
stone to the NFL.
What’s missing for this sport
to really take root in the Hispanic culture?
Álvaro Martín: Maybe we
need to wait a generation. A lot
of Hispanics are playing at the

Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi
Leonard has been selected to be a
starter in the 2016 All-Star Game.
The fifth-year Spur was voted by
fans into the game to be held on
Sunday, Feb. 14 in Toronto. This
is Leonard’s first All-Star appearance and he becomes the sixth
Spurs player in franchise history
to be selected as an All-Star starter, joining George Gervin, Larry
Kenon, Alvin Robertson, David
Robinson and Tim Duncan.
This season Leonard has helped
guide the Spurs to a 40-8 record,
tying San Antonio’s best start in
franchise history. The reigning
Defensive Player of the Year is
averaging career-highs in points
(20.1 ppg), assists (2.6 apg),
three-point field goal percentage (.481, 74-154), free throw
percentage (.874, 139-159) and
minutes (33.2 mpg), while also
registering 7.0 rebounds and
1.95 steals per game. He joins
David Robinson as the only two
players in Spurs history to record
800 points, 275 rebounds and 75
steals at the halfway point of the
season.
Leonard currently ranks second
in the NBA in three-point field
goal percentage, ninth in steals
and 20th in scoring. He is the
only player in the league shooting 50.0 percent from the field

Leonard has connected on a

prestar un mejor servicio a los

en los Estados Unidos.
El nuevo centro de producción
está plenamente equipado y dise
ñado para apoyar la producción
de programación y contenido
multiplataforma 24 horas al día,
con tecnología de primera línea
que soporta tanto los formatos
de contenido existentes como
futuros estándares de la industria
de la televisión que todavía no han
sido adoptados. Ahora la sede de

de la biblioteca en Sam Houston
High School (ubicada en el sector
este, 4635 East Houston St.), que
–tras 57 años– fue renovada en su
infraestructura interior.
Durante la reestructuración se
le añadieron nuevos muebles,
escritorios de pruebas con instru-
mentos de la tecnología moderna
para provecho del estudiantado
que, a partir del jueves 28 de enero, estará tomando ventaja de las
facilidades que tendrán conectándose al sistema de computación
que les permitirá hacer un mejor
y rápido trabajo académico en sus
respectivos estudios, entre ellos
tareas y pruebas (exámenes).
El proyecto de remodelación
fue una iniciativa de Spurs Legacy
Project, mismo que se realizó con
la participación de diversos organismos, entre ellos la fundación de
los Spurs Silver & Black Give
Back (SBGB), NBA Cares, HE-B Tournament of Champions,
United Way, y la just keep living
(j.k. living) Foundation.
La decoración en las paredes
y pilares de la renovada biblioteca consiste en fotografías de
jugadores del actual equipo de
los Spurs. La iniciativa de la
j.k. living Foundation es darle
motivación a estudiantes de high
school concediéndoles las herramientas necesarias para una mejor
calidad de vida y superación
académica.
La ceremonia de reinauguración fue presidida por el director del plantel Darnell White, y
Patti Radle, miembro del consejo
directivo del San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD),
quien presentó al superintendente
señor Pedro Martínez, el abogado
Bobby Perez, Spurs Sports & Entertainment SVP General Counsel
and Corporate.

“Llegué bendecido a los 19
años teniendo como entrenador a
Gregg Popovich, quien siempre
me ha enseñado a ser disciplinado
en mi estilo de juego y contra mis
rivales. Mi estado mental es de
hacer un buen juego y ganar partidos”, expresó Parker. “Me dedico
a entrenar duro, lo mejor que
pueda, además de alimentarme
de acuerdo a mi plan alimenticio.
Para mí ser un Spur es todo un
orgullo, ustedes sigan adelante
estudiando y realizando el deporte
de su preferencia”, añadió Parker.
Por su parte, el abogado Bobby
Pérez y la señora Radle coincidieron en sus opiniones, asegurando que continuarán apoyando

1. Combine the buttermilk, garlic,
hot-pepper sauce, salt and pepper in
a large bowl. Then, add the chicken,
cover and refrigerate for two hours
or up to 12 hours.
2. Heat the oven to 400 degrees
Fahrenheit. Lightly coat two baking
pans with oil and set aside.
3. Crush the crisp bread into
coarse crumbs and place the crumbs
in a large, shallow baking dish, toss
in the melted butter and set aside.
When you are crushing the crisp
bread, use a re-sealable plastic bag
and crush it with a rolling pin or
heavy pot that way you can keep
your area clean.
4. Remove the chicken from the
marinade and coat with the crumbs.
5. Place on the prepared pans and
bake, turning once, until golden and
crisp. It will take around 25 minutes.
Once the first two quarters are
finished, it is time to bring out the
main course of the meal for guests
to enjoy during the half-time show
and watch Coldplay and Beyoncé
perform this year.

MBAW prepares for culturally enriched international festival

Music is a form of art that enriches and connects to people’s
life through the message about
life, love or even the culture
where it comes from.
For the past 18 years, Musical Bridges Around the World
(MBAW) has provided the community with the privilege to
unite, educate and even inspire
many through diverse programs
that tie in different cultures
throughout the globe. The mission behind Musical Bridges
Around the World is to give access to all San Antonians, especially underprivileged children.
Dr. Anya Grokhovski, artistic
director and CEO of the company, reaches out to 60 underfunded schools to help them learn
about cultures that they normally
would not learn outside of school
due to their financial situations.
In order to allow students and
the community to understand
a culture different from their
own, Dr. Grokhovski has created
connections with world-class
musicians to provide a stage for
the creation of an unforgettable
harmonious experience.
Recently, La Prensa spoke
with Dr. Grokhovski to discuss
the importance of bringing music to life in the city and the
upcoming festival many should
anticipate for this month. She
discussed that after traveling
all over the world during her
music career, she chose to start
her organization in San Antonio
to enhance the music scene of a
growing city.
“San Antonio is, culturally,
an interesting place. The city
carries 60 percent of Hispanics,
which is helping the community
to expand to bigger horizons,”
said Grokhovski. “More people
are also deciding to move to San

him of his native country.
“We had a concert last year,
and a student here in the Indian
program at the San Fernando
Cathedral was in tears because
he got to hear raga, the type
of music that was close to his
heart, here in San Antonio, and
it made him feel welcome and
connected with others. We are
going to change cultural quality and texture of life through
our programming,” recalled Dr.
Grokhovski.
Now in its third year, MBAW
presents the International Music
Festival that will include many
concerts that incorporate the
roots of a country and even ballet. Dr. Grokhovski explains that
the festival brings artists from all
over the globe to come together
in a concert series dedicated to
expanding the horizons to those
interested in learning about a
culture that is unknown to them.
The MBAW will present five
concerts at this year’s festival.
The first event is Jazz Invocation
at the Laurie Auditorium at Trinity University on Friday, Feb. 12
at 7:30 p.m.
The festival continues with
Persian Impressions, L’Histoire
Du Soldat, Singing Strings and
Souvenir De La Russie. Now
that the festival is ready to enrich
the audience, Dr. Grokhovski
expressed that she has big plans
to improve the music industry in
the city in the future.
“We have very big plans for
2018 since it is going to be San
Antonio’s tricentennial of as
well as the 20th anniversary
of Musical Bridges,” said Dr.
Grokhovski. “We are planning
to produce a lavish festival in
conjunction to the San Antonio
International Festival. The larger
vision we would like for Musical
Bridges Around the World is to
be as great as Austin’s SXSW.”

Todo en la serie “Sleepy Hollow” tiende a ser gótico, sombrío, misterioso, impredecible
y sobrenatural. Lo que ya no es
sobrenatural es que el talento latino entra con mucha más fuerza
en las series de Fox.
Por eso, la segunda parte de
la tercera temporada de esta
serie, que comenzó el viernes 5
de febrero (7 p.m. C.), le dará
mayor protagonismo a la agente
Sophie Foster, protagonizada por
la actriz de origen hispano Jessica
Camacho.
Camacho, quien ha participado
en otras series como “Stalker”,
“Minority Report”, “Bones”,
“Veronica Mars” y “The Beast”,
platicó con La Prensa de San Antonio para contar un poco sobre el
desarrollo de su personaje.

Y aunque el binomio de CraneMills ha sido el eje de toda la
serie, con Mills desaparecida, la
agente Sophie Foster tomará más
protagonismo, adelanta Jessica
Camacho.
“Veremos a Sophie interactuando con todos los personajes,
pero una de las relaciones más
dinámicas es la que Sophie tendrá con Ichabod Crane, tienen
una interesante tensión”, dice
Camacho. “Todos los personajes
tienen su fuerza, amo a Jenny
y Abbie porque son fuertes, no
tienen miedo, patean traseros y
son inteligentes, pero tengo que
admitir que Crane es un personaje muy divertido, me parte de
la risa, él es definitivamente mi
preferido”, dice entusiasmada.
Sobre el carácter de la agente
Sophie Foster, Camacho dice
estar muy a gusto. “Ella es definitivamente una ‘tough cookie’,
me gusta interpretar a mujeres
que son fuertes”, añade.
Además, la actriz nacida en
Chicago pero crecida en California y Florida, se siente muy
a gusto en la serie porque esta
está siendo grabada en Atlanta
(GA). “Muchos de los lugares
son históricos y ha sido muy interesante aprender de la historia
de dichos lugares, esto vuelve la
experiencia más genial”.
Y aunque se define como “gallina”, pues trabajar en el mundo
de esta serie “es como un sueño
hecho realidad, porque (Sleepy
Hollow) es sobre qué es posible,
ver los límites de la realidad, es
sobre lo que no sabemos de qué
se trata y eso es muy emocionante”.

“Las Estrellas de Ayer - Las
Tesoros de Hoy” will be a special
event that includes a CD release,
concert and exhibit of four “mujeres” who were each individually
renowned performers in the 1940s,
50s and 60s.
The event will take place on Sunday, Feb. 7 at the Esperanza Peace
and Justice Center, located at 922
San Pedro Ave., with a 3 p.m. and 6
p.m. performance. Admission is $5.
Las Tesoros include Rita Vidaurri, Beatriz Llamas, the late “Perla
Tapatía” and Blanca Rodriguez,
who grew up in the West Side of
San Antonio and enjoyed incredible
singing careers regionally, nationally and internationally.
These four strong “mujeres”
helped build the foundation for San
Antonio’s rich musical “cultura” in
spite of the male dominated music
industry and patriarchal families
they came from. In 2006, the Esperanza brought these four “cantantes”
out of retirement to sing and perform
as Las Tesoros.
During the two performances
on Feb. 7, Las Tesoros will perform songs featured on their first
compilation CD. The CD, “Las
Tesoros de San Antonio: Las Estrellas de Ayer,” features original
“rancheras” and boleros compiled
from early recordings of these four
“mujeres.” The CD is dedicated to
Perla Tapatía, an original member
of Las Tesoros who passed away
on Aug. 24, 2014.
They will be accompanied by Mariachi Aguilas, headed by Henry Gomez. There will be an opportunity to
buy the CD and have the “mujeres”
sign CDs and other mementos. The
CD will be sold for $15.
There will be an exhibit accompanying the CD release with photos
and memorabilia detailing the mujeres’ experiences as Mexicanas o
Mexicana-Americanas performing
in the music industry during an era of
racial segregation and overt sexism.
The exhibit will be displayed
starting Feb. 7 through March 26.
Las Tesoros are part of Esperanza’s
“Arte Es Vida,” a project that seeks
to present and affirm the rich “cultura” and history of San Antonio’s
West Side that is often overlooked in
official accounts of the city.
Tickets are available for $5. Although admission can be paid at the
door, seating is limited and only presale buyers will be guaranteed a seat.

Rita Vidaurri “La Calandria”Rita was a successful performer in
Mexico in and throughout Central
and South America in the 1940s.
She toured Cuba with legends Celia
Cruz and Olga Guillot. Over the
years, Rita performed with famous
artists including Tin Tán, Pedro Vargas, Trío Tariacuri, Lalo González
(‘El Piporro’), Cantinflas, Nat King
Cole and many more. In 1957, she
was selected as the Jax Beer Poster
model. In 2004, Esperanza produced
her CD, “La Calandria,” returning
Rita to the singing circuit.
Beatriz Llamas “La Paloma
del Norte”- Beatriz was born in
Aguascalientes, Mexico, and moved
to San Antonio’s West Side with
her parents at age 13. Soon after,
she began touring with Mariachi
Chapultepec and Conjunto Bernal,
becoming a hit on the radio. In 1967,
she became the first “Tejana” to
perform at Madison Square Garden
in New York City. In 1995, she was
inducted into the Tejano Music Hall
of Fame and, in 1999, into the Tejano Conjunto Hall of Fame.

Rosa”- At age 13, Blanquita offered her first performance at the

de evitar una futura detención por
parte de la fiscalía del país, que la
investiga tras reunirse con el capo
Joaquín “el Chapo” Guzmán cuando
aún estaba prófugo, informó el
Consejo de la Judicatura.
La petición de garantías de la
actriz fue admitida a trámite por
el Juzgado Tercero de Distrito de
Amparo en Materia Penal en el
Distrito Federal.
Fechada el 2 de febrero y publicado el jueves, en la petición
de amparo la actriz impugnó por
una violación de los artículos
constitucionales 14 y 16.
El artículo 14 establece que “nadie podrá ser privado de la vida,
de la libertad o de sus propiedades,
posesiones o derechos, sino mediante
juicio seguido ante los tribunales
previamente establecidos”.
Mientras que el artículo 16
señala que “nadie puede ser molestado en su persona, familia, domicilio, papeles o posesiones, sino
en virtud de mandamiento escrito
de la autoridad competente, que
funde y motive la causa legal del
procedimiento”.
No obstante, en el acuerdo del
juez se estipula que la actriz tiene
cinco días para precisar por qué
actos se ampara en contra de la
fiscalía, como una investigación
o una orden de aprehensión, ya
que los artículos mencionados
son muy amplios, dijo a Efe una
fuente del Consejo de la Judicatura Federal.
La solicitud de amparo surge
luego de que la Procuraduría
General de la República (PGR,
fiscalía) reconociera que se está
investigando a la actriz por lavado
de dinero.
En declaraciones a los medios
de comunicación, la fiscal general, Arely Gómez, dijo que la PGR
“respeta la presunción de inocencia” de la actriz, tras confirmar que
esta interpuso un amparo.
Explicó que, como ciudadana

recursos legales” que considere
oportunos.

en el proceso de extradición del

Zombies rip through audience’s
spirit in ‘Pride and Prejudice’

When you go to the movies,
sometimes you look at the title and
quickly judge that movie as one that
is a waste of your time— “Pride
and Prejudice and Zombies” was
one of them.
When two genres from opposite
sides collide, it could either be a
masterpiece or a major failure,
as proven as the movie dragged
along. Written and directed by Burr
Steers (“17 Again” and “Charlie St.
Cloud”) and based on the best-selling novel by Seth Grahame-Smith,
“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”
puts a twist on Jane Austen’s classic
novel “Pride and Prejudice.”
Darcy (Sam Riley), a zombie
hunter, looks out for his community
as a mysterious plague rips through
England and turns the country into
a war zone in 19th century England. The land is overrun with the
undead, upending genteel Victorian
mores and turning the bucolic English countryside into a war zone.
No one is safe and friends can instantly turn into ravenous and wild
foes. For Elizabeth (Lily James),
Jane (Bella Heathcote), Lydia (Ellie
Bamber), Mary (Millie Brady) and
Kitty Bennet (Suki Waterhouse),
this was a time for a majority of
the sisters to find a man who they
can wed.
The strong-willed heroine Elizabeth, however, does not wish to
marry and prefers to master martial
arts and weaponry instead. One day
at a ball, things begin to change as
Darcy and Elizabeth cross paths
and slowly fall in disgust with one
another. Unfortunately, Jane falls
in love with Mr. Bingley (Douglas
Booth), Darcy’s best friend, only
bringing them closer together.
While Elizabeth could not stand
Darcy, both must put their issues
behind them and deal with the
deadly circumstances of the day.
Overtime, Elizabeth slowly and secretly likes Darcy because he would
rather improve his bounty hunter
skills and hunt for zombies than
find a wife. Together, they must
put up a team to fight the plague of
zombies and save England.
Steers took the plunge to direct
a movie about “the zombie craze”
that many fans enjoy; unfortunately, Steers failed miserably to try to
bring a novel to life that needed to
focus on two genres that are polar
opposites of one another.
As he tried to tie in both genres of
the movie, the comedy was slowly
becoming terrible and time started
to go by slower. The plot of the
movie needed more time to stew
over and to be studied that way the
emotion of the movie would not
lead to confusion.
An important point that stood
out from this movie was the topic
of feminism. The Bennet sisters
where not only women in waiting,
but they were also warriors who
could fight for themselves and
proved that they were more fearless
than the men.
Many could tell that this was not
Lily James’ first role as she did not
struggle to play the feisty, independent and clear-eyed Elizabeth.
In fact, this role was beneath her
and she was too experienced of an
actress to play the role.
Ultimately, if you are in the
mood to watch a stupid movie
to laugh at, there is a movie currently in theaters that will waste 107
minutes of your life. Do not spend
your money on a stupid movie like
“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.”
The film is rated PG-13 for

del Toro continuó fiel a su amor
por los cuentos góticos y de fantasmas en su más reciente película
“Crimson Peak”, que salió en su
versión Blu-Ray/DVD, Digital
HD a finales de enero. Y On
Demand el próximo 9 de febrero.
“Crimson Peak” es la historia
de Edith (Mia Wasikowska), una
jovencita americana que abandona
la certeza y seguridad de su casa
en Buffalo (NY) a principios del
siglo XX para unir su vida a la de
un misterioso aristócrata inglés,
Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) en una remota y siniestra
mansión en Inglaterra a la que
llama “Crimson Peak”.
Los fantasmas, el suspenso,
una misteriosa relación fraternal,
además de un cuidadoso manejo

anthem at Super Bowl 50

national anthem before the start
of Super Bowl 50 on Sunday at
Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara,
California.
The singer will perform “The
Star-Spangled Banner” before
the big game between the National Football Conference champion
Carolina Panthers, led by quarterback Cam Newton, and the
American Football Conference
