Message from Yuet Mui Kong, Program Coordinator:
Aloha,
Thank you for the warm welcome from all of you. I feel thankful to
work with our dedicated staff and volunteers for the seniors at this
diverse and vibrant Center. Last month, I got to join some of the
clubs’ meetings, classes, and the Show and Sell. We also learned
about how to protect our personal and financial information, how to
prevent becoming a victim of fraud and more through the Senior
Fraud Education Fair. Mahalo to Congressman Mark Takai, his staff,
and all the exhibitors.
September is National Senior Center Month. The 2015 theme is:
Celebrate LIFE at Your Senior Center. LIFE stands for Learning, Independence, Friends and Energy. You can celebrate LIFE by
joining LMPSC funded Fall Session. The Session begins on September 21, and the registration has started. Come celebrate LIFE with
us.
Chaminade University’s School of Nursing will be coming to the
Center to provide FREE health education and screenings for our
members. Your participation could benefit your health as well as the
students’ school work. Stay tuned for more information. Aloha!

Chinese Cultural Club
by Dorothy Mau
Chinese Cultural Club warmly welcome back President Mau after several months of illness. Tea and cookies were served by Edna
Low and Richard Thi. Beautiful Chinese love songs were sung by Mrs. Huang Yuk Kun and Mrs. Shirley Lau. Mr. Li Neng who has
a beautiful voice sang a song of Shanghai Town. The club members moved, seconded and passed to donate monetary gifts to Palolo
Chinese Home and Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center to whom they belong. Morning exercises are conducted by Cindy Choy.
Flag pledge and the song God Bless America were led by President Mau and Mrs. Huang. Club members appreciate donation from
Betty Parker. Puna Frank, Cookie, and Coordinator Mui Kong are arranging to get Roger to come on Friday to help the members
sign up for the bus transportation as they are planning the Moon Festival activities at Helemano Plantation. Club members were encouraged to take the blood pressure test by the student nurses of Chaminade University. Until next time, we wish everyone Good
Health and Happiness!

While we celebrated Admission's (Statehood ) Day on Friday, Aug. 22, we are also proud of our patriotic members who recite the
Pledge of Allegiance and sing America the Beautiful and Hawaii Ponoi every Monday morning to open our program for the day.
How wonderful to start our Mondays on such a high note. Much appreciation also goes out to Takejiro Higa for his "expression of
gratitude" every Monday morning.
To recap our program for the month of August, we all enjoyed the Bon Dance led by Sensei Madge Sodetani with everyone
joining in the fun wearing their colorful hapi coats. The following Monday, we were all put to the test as to what we know about
our medications. Hope we all passed the test for continued good health. On the third Monday, we enjoyed the wonderful performances of Nelson Yoshioka's group, together with the celebration of the birthday celebrants. The fourth Monday, we heard from
Curator Eddie Croom about the history of the Honolulu Police Department.
Happy Labor Day! on Monday, September 7. It's a Holiday. On Sept. 14, Island Hospice representatives will speak to us
about their organization and the services they provide to the community. On Sept. 21, we will sing- along with our own Lanakila
ukulele/singers led by Moana Gray. We will also celebrate our September birthdays along with our 90+ celebrants who are: Walter
Ho, Violet Isara,Yoshiko Kaneshiro and David Young. Many more happy birthday cakes and ice cream to all of you. On Sept. 28,
we will be mesmerized by a magic show. Maybe if we say "Abracadabra" our weather will instantly change from hot to cold.
Be sure to join us all in September, now that your grandchildren are all back in school and no more babysitting.

Bom dia…Thank you loyal members for attending August meetings and outings. Get well to All those who are experiencing changes physically

between 20 and 30 different religious sects. We also got to see a $1.5 million home in Coelho Lane. August 26 we enjoyed about 30 different
types of Chinese dishes at the Royal Palace Luncheon Buffet. From manapua to cocktail and deep fried shrimps including serve yourself ice
cream which was part of the 7 desserts. We voted to return again soon.
Nominations for the 2016 officers and by law changes will end in October. Some important discussions are presently happening that
may affect the existence of our clubs future…so…your feed back and input is very crucial at this time. Till then…take care, see you soon.

Hawaiian Cultural Club
By Betty Parker
August 3rd introduction and meeting with exercises by Betty Parker. August 6th the Hawaiian Club participated in Show
and Sell. On August 18th the Hawaiian Club took an excursion and lunch to Au’s Garden Chinese Restaurant. August
19th Lanakila Senior Center hosted the Senior Fraud Protection. So much needed information for us to see and read.
Very interesting. We sometimes have story telling with our members. Here is Anita Hasegawa’s story she shared with us.
The 94 year old doesn’t remember what year it was but she remembers when she met the Vice President of the United
States, Lyndon B. Johnson in person. Also she met President of the Philippines, President Marcos and his wife Imelda.

Yuet Kong, Mary and John Sueda, Judi Yogi, Jeanette Shirohira, and Trini Ramento. Each member and guest got to take home favors and center pieces (donated). Lots of dancing, good food and music was enjoyed by all. Thank you to all who made this a success!

Hai Sai Gusuyo! Well August brought us unpredictable weather so our Show & Sell Andagi making was canceled. Hopefully “Yan”
(next year) we’ll be eating a lot of “Masan” (delicious) Andagi.
On Aug. 13, Kajimaya and Beiju was celebrated. Our Kajimaya Honoree was Stella Nakayama while our Beiju Honorees in
attendance were Gwen Perry, Sakae Nakata, Katherine Uejo, Etsuko Nakagawa and Eiko Kido. President Jane Higa explained
about the meaning of “Kajimaya” (97th birthday as it’s said celebrant returns to childhood at this age, hence the pinwheel children
play with) and “Beiju” (88th birthday is “Year of Rice” because of how Japanese character for “Bei” is written and is a good luck
symbol. Also, one of last party celebrated for long life). With our special guests in attendance which included Mark Higa, President
of Hawaii United Okinawa Association and Lanakila’s own Program Coordinator, Mui Kong, Sensei Mitsuko Toguchi Nakasone’s
Churakagi Dancers entertained.
And the celebration continued on the 20th with birthday babies being entertained by several of our members-some singing,
some dancing. “Dikiton” (Well Done!) members.
August winded down with a speaker from Human Care. Besides giving us pointers on taking care of our bones, we were treated to a
healthy snack.
This month brings us continued entertainment and health for our brain.
