We’re back in Jersey! Some of you may recall back in 1993, the very
first Super Billiards Expo was held in Secaucus, NJ. From there, we
moved to our long-time home in Valley Forge. And now 20 years
later - we’re back!
This new home brings lots of promise to the show for years to come
- a spacious venue nestled in an urban area home to scores of
poolplayers and fans - and less than 15 miles from where I grew up
and learned the game.
Make sure you try to visit every vendor - there are some great
products and craftsman out there. We’ve got a packed house with
vendors from all over the USA - and a few other countries as well!
As usual, a very special thanks to my friends and family that make up
my staff. Their hard work and long hours help ensure that things run
smoothly so that you can enjoy the show!
Best of luck to all of you this weekend, and be sure to join us next
year for another fun weekend March 13-16, 2014

The American Cuemakers Association (ACA) is proud to present three
special awards at this year's annual banquet at the Allen Hopkins' Super
Billiards Expo. The ACA was formed in 1992 to both educate the public
on and promote the American made cue, as well as establish a standard
of excellence in the art of cue making.
The first award is for the "Cuemaker of
the Year." This award was begun in
2008 to recognize an ACA member
who has provided a top quality product
in an ethical, honorable, and
professional manner through the years. The 2013 ACA "Cuemaker of the Year"
award goes to Jim Stadum and Dave
Doucette of Samsara Cues. Offering a wide variety of
styles and price ranges, Samsara Cues specializes in
high quality cues that are unique in design and
performance. A large share of their clientele is the
individual cue collector.
The second award to be
presented at the banquet on
Saturday, April 4, is the
"Peoples Choice Award." This
award acknowledges the
public's choice of their
favorite cue on display at the
ACA booth at this year's
Expo. Every ACA member
can display one cue which
they have built for this show. Attendees at the show can
then cast their votes for their
favorite cue. The cue maker
whose cue receives the most
votes will be recognized with
the "Peoples Choice Award." Last year's winner of this
award was Pete Tonkin of
Tonkin Custom Cues.
Pictures of the award
winners and the Peoples
Choice cue will be
posted after the
presentations on the
ACA website: www.cuemakers.org
When Jim Stadum and Dave Doucette
formed Samsara Cues in 1991, they strove
to combine modern technology with and
ancient technique known as Intarsia to
create unique and mesmerizing designs in
their cues. Dave's experience as a master
cabinet maker, machinist, and design
engineer allows Samsara to custom build
most of their machinery. Jim's business sense and
drive for perfection combined with Dave's experience
have allowed Samsara Cues to win many awards
throughout the years. They are one of only a handful
of cue makers to have a cue permanently on display at
the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
The third and last award to be
presented is the prestigious
"Lifetime
Achievement
Award." This marks only the
second time in the history of
the ACA that this award has
been presented. The first went to Gordon Hart of Viking Cues in 1994. The
recipient of the "Lifetime Achievement Award" is Jerry Pechauer of J. Pechauer
Custom Cues. 2013 marks the 50 year anniversary of J. Pechauer Custom
Cues. In 1963, Jerry Pechauer built his first cue while doing cue repair as a
sideline while holding a full-time job. Also in 1963, Jerry's son, Joe, was born. Jerry continued with his cue repair and cue making as a sideline job for 14
years. At the age of 14, Joe made his first cue. Jerry was so impressed with
Joe's work that he decided to take their cue making to another level. In the late
1970's Jerry forged a friendship with Fred Mali of Mali Cues. Mr. Mali was a
valuable mentor to Jerry as he pushed forward with J. Pechauer Cues. In 1980
Jerry opened a billiards supply store and 2 years later he moved into a building
with a poolroom and a 6000 square foot shop. Joe, who had graduated from
high school by this time, entered the family business full-time. In 1989, Jerry and Joe displayed at their first Billiard Congress of America Trade
Show. Here they established contacts with the European billiard market which
led to their cues being sold throughout Europe as well as in America. In 1993,
they completed a new, atmosphere-controlled, state of the art facility which
allows J. Pechauer Custom Cues to be made 100% in-house.
In 2007, Joe took over as president of the company while Jerry continues
offering support and expertise. From dealer base of 58 dealers in 1993 to over
400 around the world in 2013, today J. Pechauer Custom Cues is one the top
brands in the billiard industry.

Three-Cushion Billiards: How is it played? Here’s a primer on the game
written by Andy Janquitto (USBA Pres.) and Paul Frankel, Professor Q-Ball
Three-cushion is played with three balls—a white,
a yellow and a red. The white and yellow balls are
cue balls. They have red spots to help the audience
follow the spin of the balls. One player uses the
white as his cue ball; his opponent uses the yellow. The red is always an object ball.
To score a point, a player must cause his cue ball
to strike either of the other two balls (the red or the
opponent’s cue ball) and three-or-more rails before
the shooter’s cue ball strikes the second object ball. The shooter’s cue ball may strike the first object ball
and the three-rails in any combination or order. Among others, the cue ball can strike three rails,
then the first object ball then the second, or the cue
ball can strike an object ball, three rails, then the
second object ball, or the cue ball can strike a rail, the
first object ball, two more rails, then the second
object ball. There are many possible combinations. Three contacts
of a cushion are the minimum. Five, six and seven cushion shots are
common. The cue ball can also strike the same cushion more than
once. Each contact of a cushion counts in determining whether the
cue ball has contacted the required three cushions.
The players lag to determine who has choice of breaking. The
winner of the lag usually chooses to break since it is a set shot. The
winner of the lag also chooses his cue ball—white or yellow. The
opponent plays with the opposite cue ball. A player plays with his cue
ball throughout the game. After the break, the players play the balls
where they come to rest. The balls are not touched by hand unless a
cue ball freezes against another object ball or a ball leaves the table. A
player continues his time at the table (called an inning) as long as he
continues to score.
During Preliminary Rounds, the first player to reach a score of 25
wins the game. Semi-Finals are played to 30, and Finals go to 35.

Super Senior Amateur Players meeting:Saturday, 10 am
Women’s Amateur Players meeting: Friday, 6 pm
Junior Amateur Players meeting: Saturday, 12 pm

FORMAT – Tournaments are single elimination. First player to
win 2 out of 3 races wins the match. Junior’s events are races
are to 4, finals are races to 5. Junior players must keep their
own score. All other events race to 5.
SECOND CHANCE FORMAT - one set, race to 5, single
elimination
CLOSE CALLS – If there is a hit that may be questionable, it is
the responsibility of the non-shooting player to get the
tournament director prior to the shot. Otherwise, if there is a
discrepancy, the call will go to the shooter.
SCOREKEEPING – There is a score-keeping form that must be
filled out by both players during the match. The score sheet
must have your table number and bracket number filled in.
Winner of the match is responsible for bringing the form to the
tournament director immediately following the match in order
to progress in the tournament. Players must mark their own
scores. You may not mark your opponent’s score.
TIME-OUT – Each player is allowed one five-minute restroom
time-out per match. Time-outs can only be taken between
games and only by the breaking player. A player cannot take a
break during a rack whether or not he/she is shooting. If there
is an emergency, notify the tournament director.
FORFEIT – You will forfeit your match if you are more than 15
minutes late (by the tournament director’s watch) for your
scheduled match time. Please try and be 15 min. early for your
match. Unscrewing you cue during a match is also a forfeit. If
you need to change shafts you must notify your opponent.
NO COACHING – ALL coaching is prohibited. Coaching may
result in loss of game / match.
NON-SHOOTING PLAYERS - As a courtesy to the shooter and
other players around you, if you are not at the table you MUST
be seated.
THE BREAK – Flip for the first break, winner breaks and players
alternate breaks thereafter during the race. Loser of the flip
breaks first in the second set and player’s alternate breaks
thereafter during the race. If a third set is needed, players flip,
winner breaks and players alternate breaks thereafter during
the last race.
PUSH - One push is allowed after the break
CUE BALL scratch on break - ball in hand anywhere on the
table for incoming player
BREAK - Player must attempt an open break, no safe breaking.
If the cue ball crosses the head string and does not contact the
one ball on the break (such as a miscue), this is a foul. Player
who fouled loses his/her turn to break; incoming player breaks
from behind the head string. If the cue ball does not hit the one
ball and disturbs the rack, or if the cue ball or an object ball
does not hit a rail after the one ball is contacted, the balls are
re-racked. This is a foul and incoming player breaks from behind
the head string. Player who fouled loses his/her turn to break.
GENERAL – Any foul results in ball in hand. Any ball landing off
the playing surface is a foul. No balls are spotted after a foul
except the 9-ball, including after the break. Three consecutive
fouls by a player is loss of game but a warning must be given and
acknowledged between the second and third fouls. If a player
moves a ball his/her opponent has the option of putting it back
or leaving it where it is. It is a foul if the shooting player puts the
ball back with out asking his/her opponent first.
JUMP CUES - All legal jump cues (min. 40 inches) are allowed.
You may not use the shaft of a cue to jump.
