Where is this happening? Sligo is situated on the rugged Atlantic coast of NW Ireland. Experience the breathtaking scenery of a landscape steeped in Celtic mythology, literary tradition, musical heritage, and world class surf breaks. Explore what Yeats has called the ‘Land of Heart’s Desire’. See the region’s many attractions: e.g. the giant rocky cairn of Queen Maeve’s grave situated atop Knocknarea standing silently over Strandhill village; visit Parke’s Castle on Lough Gill overlooking ‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree’; take your pick of the numerous pristine beaches and craggy limestone reefs so as to ride the Emerald Irish surf; or trace the largest group of megaliths in the country, and the second largest in Europe, at the Carrowmore Tombs, prehistoric monuments that range from five and half thousand to six thousand years old. Getting There Ireland West Airport at Knock Co. Mayo is the nearest international airport to Sligo. It has scheduled flights from all over the UK and some European destinations. Ireland Airport is situated just 45 minutes from Sligo. However, Sligo is probably best reached by flying to Dublin or Belfast due to the wider availability of air carriers and connections. Within Ireland, for directions and transport options to Sligo please go to: www.sligotourism.ie/directions-‐to-‐sligo/ There is a train station in Sligo. It can be reached from Dublin by railway. We advise delegates to bring you’re their own surf equipment to Ireland, as there is limited rental availability for intermediate and expert level surfers. The Conference Venue The Glasshouse is a Four Star city centre hotel; towering dramatically over the Garavogue River it offers the discerning traveller chic interiors, great city views, and proximity to all downtown Sligo has to offer. Shaped like a ship in dock, the hotel’s glass exterior can be seen from afar, inside the quirky interiors are equally as impressive. See for yourself, take the virtual tour! www.theglasshouse.ie The EASD has negotiated a number of accommodation packages with preferential rates for our Conference delegates. Upon securing your Conference ticket, you will be given access via a promotional code to these great deals allowing you to book and stay at the heart of the activity during the Conference. The Surfer’s Academy For the first time, the EASD will host the Surfer’s Academy – a One-‐Day Symposium on Health-‐related issues affecting the Surfer and Surfing Communities. This Symposium is designed for non-‐medically trained surfers, and does not form part of the Medical Conference. We want to ask you to bring your stoked non-‐medical surf buddies to attend this day! The Annual EASD Conference helps to connect people through Surfing and Medicine. So this year we’re reaching out to the Surfer in order to translate that vision of “Keeping the Surfer Healthy and Safe”. Surfers will be guided through relevant topics by leading experts using concise sign-‐post seminars/lectures. Broadly speaking, the Academy will address numerous surfing health concerns under the overarching themes of: •

The Elements: Water; Cold; Safety; Environment Injury and Prevention Country Soul: the Surfer’s Mind Training and Performance Each thematic block will be interspersed by an Irish Surfing Short showcasing the Best of Irish Waves, Surf Filmmakers, and Wave Riding on Ireland’s shores. Furthermore, on the day, the Glasshouse will host an exhibition of the Best of Irish Surf Photography, Art, Film, and Board Design/Shaping. The EASD Surfer’s Academy is fast shaping up to be the Surf Calendar Event of the year! Invite your friends and surf buddies. Make sure they don’t miss out! Who are the EASD? The popularity of surfing, in both professional and recreational realms, continues to increase annually, with an estimated 20 million surfers worldwide. In response to the health needs of an ever growing population; motivated by a passion for Surfing and Medicine; and harbouring a desire to harness the multiplicity of allied sub-‐specialties (e.g. Wilderness, Tropical, Pre-‐Hospital Care, etc.) and foster inter-‐discipline collaboration, the European Association of Surfing Doctors (EASD) was established in late 2011 as a non-‐profit organisation to connect people through Surfing, improve the Health and Well-‐Being of Surfers and their Communities, and further the development of evidence-‐based “Surfing Medicine”. The EASD aims to “Keep the Surfer Healthy and Safe”. By participating in this event, you too can contribute. Cognisant of how Creativity, Connectivity, Autonomy, and Using Valued Competencies empowers and imparts a sense of ownership and purpose, we at the EASD have adopted a flat management, team-‐based, organisation structure to realise and deliver our projects to date. If you have the desire, capability, and enthusiasm, to make a positive contribution to the lives of many, make sure you are at this Conference. Get involved. Give something back to Surfing. Sponsorship Opportunities and Benefits By choosing to support this event, your organisation or company will have the opportunity to participate in a world first – The Surfer’s Academy and the 3rd Annual Conference in Surfing Medicine.
