God moves in a mysterious way,
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea
and rides upon the storm.
Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs
And works His sov’reign will.
William Cowper 1774
The ways of God are full of mystery indeed! The gift and blessing that I was granted to be your bridge
interim minister for these past months was a surprise, to say the least. The best surprise! Ministering with you
has been a joy.
I like the word joy. It is a full word. A deep word. It is a richer word than happiness. Happiness is fleeting, and usually is a response to a specific occurrence. Joy is a way of being. It is fostered and nurtured and
full of grace. It holds steady, even when times get tough. Even when I needed to respond to 20 different
emails instantly, there was joy. Even when I could not find the correct key to a door I really needed to open,
there was joy. Even when I woke up in the middle of night, full of prayer for hope and guidance in the midst of
shadowed troubles, there was joy. Not a surface joy. But a joy none the less. A joy deep down, a joy that let
me know that God is.
Joy holds steady, even when happiness is spilling over. Joy was a foundation beneath the happiness of
Easter morning. Joy was the foundation beneath the light of carrying a newly baptized child down the aisle to
meet her church family. Joy was and is beneath all the time that I have lived as your pastor.
And now it is time for a change. God has found a way to bring us a faith-filled and gifted new pastor:
Jack Perkins Davidson. Jack will begin his work with us at the end of August. My last Sunday as your bridge
interim will be on September 4. And then I will take what is called boundary time. Boundary time will mean
that I will not participate in church activities until Advent begins. This will allow space for Jack and all of you to
see each other with a full gaze. And it will allow me the space to gently lift my soul and mind from the role I
have been carrying.
And yes, I will miss you. I will miss the excitement of Jack’s first day. I will miss the rich and wonderful
colleagueship that I have been blessed to share with Clare, Terese, Melissa and Barb. I will miss Monday
Bible Study. I will miss the Jesus Squad. I will miss praying with you. I will miss being with you. Thank God
the separation will not need to be permanent. When I return in Advent, I will resume my life in the pews,
thankful that I have been able to serve as your bridge interim, and thankful to be back as ‘just’ a member.
Thank you. Thank you all for your prayers and joy and faith and trust. Thank you all for your humor
and hard work and patience. Thank you all for being such a remarkable church. I thank God. I thank God for
you.
With love and blessings, Pastor Ruth

The Rev. Jack Perkins Davidson called to be
Spring Glen Church’s next settled Senior Pastor
On Sunday, June 5th, 2016, the congregation of Spring Glen
Church voted to call The Rev. Jack Perkins Davidson to be our
next settled Sr. Pastor. Jack’s official start date at Spring Glen
Church will be August 23. His first Sunday leading worship at
SGC will be Rally Sunday on September 11. We are excited
to welcome Jack, his wife Laura, and their daughter PJ. We
are deeply grateful to our Search Committee (Janice Ammons,
Nick Appleby, Michele Backus, Nancy Beals, Rick Brownell
(chair), Jennifer Heath, Laurel Laster, and Mike Palmieri), who
have worked long and diligently with all of us and on our behalf to discern this next step for Spring
Glen Church. We are deeply grateful to Interim Sr. Pastor David Minnick, Bridge Interim Sr.
Pastor Ruth LeBar, and Associate Pastor Clare Robert for their wonderful leadership and pastoral
care.
Contemplative Prayer
This fall a program on Contemplative Prayer will be offered for those who are new to this way of
praying, silence and meditation. What is Contemplative prayer? How is it different from the way we
usually pray in worship, group settings, and by ourselves?
“In its basic and most fundamental expression, Contemplative Prayer is a loving attentiveness to
God.”
--Richard Foster: Prayer: Finding the Heart’s True Home
That quote leaves a lot of room for exploration: what is loving attentiveness to God? Over the
months, we will spend some time in learning practices such as Breathing, Centering and Healing
prayer. These methods use silence in various ways, in connection with scripture or simple words or
short phrases.
If you would like to learn to pray in other ways besides our usual verbal prayers, (where we do much
if not all the talking), then this program may be of interest to you. And if you have some basic
questions about prayer or find it hard to pray, this course may be helpful to you. The first class is
about just that: What stands in the way of deepening our prayer and relationship with God? We will
meet early in the fall for an introduction and to determine our schedule of monthly meetings.
And if you participated in the first year of this program and would like to continue, let me know as
well. I am developing a new course on further adventures in contemplative prayer. We will meet in
the fall to gauge interest and schedule.
Please contact me if you are curious or interested in either of these programs.
Peace, Pastor Clare

In Gratitude to Spring Glen Church
The first Spring Glen Church meeting I ever attended was a Deacon’s meeting at which for at least 30 minutes the Deacons painstakingly discussed how many times the steeple bell should be rung before and after church. I was amazed that anyone could pour
so much energy into what I considered to be a very minor church matter. However, during the 15 years I have worshipped here, I
have seen that passionate attention to detail repeat itself at many meetings and I see the overall result. Like a painting, the
individual strokes create a complete, polished masterpiece. My church family at Spring Glen Church is full of individuals who have
impacted my life in countless ways and have given my family and me a place where our faith and friendship have been nurtured.
I will always be grateful to this church for its generosity permitting my father to baptize my children during worship here. Another
poignant memory is attending a worship service designed for those who had lost a baby or child. There was so much love there
lifting each other up. Book discussions challenged me to reconstruct the concept of forgiveness. Memories of fun times abound we have great children in our Sunday School that enrich and surprise us with their insight. This church has fundamentally
transformed me.
As my family leaves on July 13, we take with us a gratitude deep enough to push us into our next adventures. In a time where
uncertainty abounds in our new routines and community, we will stay anchored in the memories of our Spring Glen family. It
disappointments me that I will have to watch Spring Glen from a distance as it embarks in a new direction this fall. It is an
unfinished story set to be written by the many caring individuals who make up our church. Each person here has a unique ability to
contribute to its next chapter. I wish you all the best and I thank you for all the concern given to me during my family’s transition.
In gratitude, Laurie Bleickardt
Confirmation Day Reflections
The Confirmation Class induction this year on May 22, 2016 was a JOY to behold. They conducted themselves with
dignity, composure and a great sense of respect for each other. Their calm and powerful belief was a shining beacon for all to
see. Parents and family came up to ‘Lay on Hands’ and God was surely in this place.
Some of the confirmands said they could not prove there is a God and the only way to deal with this is by faith. Each
confirmand told us what they wanted to accomplish and convinced us that they love God and want to be part of a fellowship that
praises God’s name at Spring Glen Church.
Some of the confirmands said that confirmation is their first independent decision ever. Faith in God is a prerequisite for
confirmation and each of the eight young people convinced me that they are sincere Believers.
After the first four gave their testimony and we sang a song, I could hardly wait for the next four. It was a wonderful
experience to listen while these dedicated young women and men stood on their feet and praised God.
The hard work and dedication of their mentors Karlee Etter and the Reverend Clare Robert was overwhelmingly clear, as
was the deep love and affection of each participant. With Christian Love, Don Colvin
Thank you so much for all the Spring Glen Church "angels" who prepared
meals, sent cards, prayed and wished me well during my recent surgery. It is nice to be a part of a supportive community. Gayle Logan

Welcome New Members!!
Sharon Bottomley was born and grew up in Berlin, CT. Throughout her life and over the years she has
been back and forth to CT. Sharon went to school at University of Rhode Island and then lived in
Rhode Island, in the Narragansett area for several years while working at a program for developmentally disabled adults. She transferred to the company's program in CT in the 1980's. Eventually Sharon
enrolled in Nursing School at Yale University and graduated in 1994. She was the recipient of a Department of Veterans Affairs scholarship, and took a position with the VA in Virginia. Sharon has lived in
Roanoke, Virginia for about 20 years. She transferred back to Connecticut about a year ago to be closer to family. Sharon's mother just celebrated her 90th birthday this May. Her sister and her husband
also live in Hamden, and are the owners of the Fat Robin Nature and Birding store on Whitney Avenue.
Sharon is enjoying being back in CT and reconnecting with family and friends. She is exploring the local
hiking and biking trails and trying to get some garden vegetables in the ground. Sharon is glad to be
joining Spring Glen and look forward to getting to know the church family.
Susan J. Murtha is a native of Connecticut and a Spring Glen resident since 2014, an ordained minister
and a former mechanical engineer, a mom and a grandmother. Her son, daughter-in-law and grandson
live in California and despite the distance, they manage to spend a great deal of quality time together.
Susan served as a settled minister for many fulfilling years and five years ago felt called to Intentional
Interim Ministry. Susan loves what she does. Currently, she is serving as the Interim Senior Minister at
First Church of Christ in Farmington. In her spare time, she especially enjoys reading, hiking, gardening
and NYC. Although her work means she will be with you only rarely on a Sunday, Susan hopes to foster
relationship through other parts of your church’s life!
Alexandra (Alex) Smolnik moved to Hamden in June 2015 with her husband Dan, and
their children, Daniel and Elizabeth. She is a reliability and maintainability engineer at
Sikorsky Aircraft and works on the new Presidential Helicopter program. When she is
not working, she enjoys baking, reading, and spending time with family. Alex appreciates the welcoming character of the congregation here and hopes to become involved
with the choir in the fall.
Dan Smolnik has been a tax attorney for over 30 years. He moved to Hamden with his
family in 2015 and values the diversity and opportunities for community service here. He
serves on the Hamden Inland Wetlands Commission and as Vice Chair (elect) of the
Tax Section of the Connecticut Bar Association. Dan holds degrees from the University of Rochester, Valparaiso University and the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dan enjoys time with his family, good wine, and his wife’s terrific cooking. He also frequently publishes his tax and economic research. Dan is always open to any event that includes a screening of Casablanca.
Becca Stevens lives in Hamden with her husband, Ted, cat, Henry, and dog, Frankie. They
moved to Connecticut from Baltimore in the summer of 2015. A native Marylander, Becca is still
adjusting to her life as a New Englander—especially missing crab feasts now that summer is upon
us! She currently works as an administrative assistant in the economics department at Yale University, but ultimately has a goal of starting her own residential organizing business. Becca enjoys
board games, a wide-variety of TV shows, cooking and baking, and spending time outside on
warm sunny days. She is looking forward to officially joining the Spring Glen Church family and
becoming more involved with the youth of all ages and service projects.

BARB’S CORNER
Long ago, on May 15, I officially began as the Coordinator of Christian Education. I have enjoyed meeting so
many of you and I look forward to all the new beginnings that will be coming in the fall. Thank you again for the
warm welcome. I feel so at home here at Spring Glen. Though I will enjoy the summer, I will miss you and look
forward to beginning again with you in the fall. As the CE Coordinator, I work only 10 months and during the
summer I will not be readily available. However, the Christian Education Board will be overseeing summer
Sunday school. Since I am a 10 month employee, there are 8 weeks in the summer when I will not be working.
There is 1 week during the summer when I will be working primarily from home, I will be telephoning volunteers
and inviting teachers. I will also be working on newsletter info, registration info and organizing curriculum. On
Aug 27 a regular schedule (20 hours per week) will be resumed. The 8 weeks off are as follows: June 1824, June 25-July 1, July 2-July 8, July 9- 15, July 16-29, July 30-Aug 5, Aug 6-12, Aug 20-26. I will be
working August 13-19.
HAVE FUN THIS SUMMER BUT…….FIND TIME TO
WORSHIP TOGETHER
Summer is a magical time for all of us here at Spring Glen. This is a great time for our children to let their minds
wander, wonder, and wish for fun in the sun and experience “The Son” in new ways. Summer Sunday School
(for K-5th grade) begins on June 26. At 10am children begin in worship with their families. After the
“Time for Children”, the children go to the Boy Scout Room with their teachers for creative, active
experiences. THANK YOU, SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS! Here is the schedule:

The library in the Fellowship Room is filled with a variety of books that may surprise you. Check it out and feel free to borrow
whatever may be of interest. There’s a very easy check out process- just look for the white loose leaf notebook. A few
suggestions:

Gospel during Alzheimer's Disease, Dr.Benjamin Mast.
Join Us for a Summer Book Read!
It was wonderful to gather with friends of all ages last summer to discuss Katherine Applegate’s The One and Only Ivan. This
year we will discuss Sara Pennypacker’s Pax. From bestselling and award-winning author Sara Pennypacker comes a beautifully wrought, utterly compelling novel about the powerful relationship between a boy and his fox. Pax and Peter have been inseparable ever since Peter rescued him as a kit. But one day, the unimaginable happens: Peter's dad enlists in the military and
makes him return the fox to the wild. At his grandfather's house, three hundred miles away from home, Peter knows he isn't
where he should be—with Pax. He strikes out on his own despite the encroaching war, spurred by love, loyalty, and grief, to be
reunited with his fox. Meanwhile Pax, steadfastly waiting for his boy, embarks on adventures and discoveries of his own. . . .
Plan to join us for this book discussion on Thursday, July 21, from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. (location TBA). Pax is suitable for those
in 3rd grade and above. We extend a special invitation to the younger among us to join us for this book discussion. If you'd like
to order a copy of the book, please contact Debra Tangarone, [email protected], by Thursday, May 19.
Opportunity for Ministry
Spring Glen’s Young Adult Bible Study needs you! The group gathers alternating Sunday evenings from 5:00-7:00 pm at the
church. We need volunteers to provide child care to enable these young parents to gather for fellowship and study. Are you
willing/available to give this meaningful gift to the younger members of our congregation? Depending on the number of folk that
sign up, your commitment will be 3-4 times over the course of the program year (Sept-May). Volunteers serve from 5:50-7:00 on
their scheduled evening. Please contact Cynthia Licata ([email protected]) to sign up.
IT’S BACKPACK TIME ALREADY!
Thanks so much to everyone who has helped with this effort in the past. Hamden Youth Services (HYS) was really blown away
by the backpacks the Spring Glen Church gave to their children last year. This year, HYS has asked for the backpacks earlier
than last year. We would like all backpacks turned in by 7/31! We are still waiting for names and ages, but wanted to give folks
a head start. Please consider helping children stay in school by donating a backpack. If you choose, fill the backpacks with
other items you think will help a child feel encouraged to go to school. Children removed from their home often are required to
attend a different school as part of a placement process and have an increased need to feel like they belong; please no used
items unless they are in very, very, good condition. We anticipate having to provide backpacks for children of all ages. Below
are the suggested contents for each age group: This year, it was suggested that older children prefer mechanical pencils (they
like to trade them) and gel type pens rather than ballpoint.
Preschool/Elementary, Age 4-11
Book (age appropriate), tissues, colored pencils, crayons, drawing pad, erasers, file folders(colorful), glue, glue sticks, journal,
markers, notebooks & loose leaf paper, ruler, scissors (blunt), pencils & sharpener, key chain toy, red pens, binder, tape.
Middle/High School, Age 11-17
Book (age appropriate), colored pencils, pens, colorful spiral notebooks, compass & calculator, drawing pad, erasers, file folders
(colorful), geometric stencils, glue, glue sticks, scissors, journal, markers, notebooks & loose leaf paper, pencils and sharpener,
ruler, white out, red pens, stapler & staples, tape.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email Christian Action Committee Co-Chairs, Bethany Appleby
([email protected]) or Scott Lucker ([email protected]). Thank you so much for your continued generosity!

Search Committee - Final Report
On Sunday June 5, 2016 our candidate, the Rev. Jack Perkins Davidson, shared in the leading of worship which included his
preaching of the message. A congregational meeting was held immediately following the service. Those members present were
asked to cast a secret ballot (Yes, No, Abstain) to call the Rev. Jack Perkins Davidson as the next settled Sr. Pastor of Spring Glen
Church. An overwhelming majority voted "Yes" and Jack will be the 10th settled Sr. Pastor of Spring Glen Church.
Jack's last Sunday preaching in Redding will be June 26, after which he and his family will take the month of July and the first few
weeks of August to recharge, pack and move to Hamden. The official start date for Jack at Spring Glen Church is August 23, at
which time he will have regular office hours and begin working with staff and lay leadership. His first Sunday leading worship at
SGC will be Rally Sunday on September 11.
Thank you for this opportunity to be of service to Spring Glen Church.

Seeking Hosts for '16-'17 Fellowship Hours
As part of our shared ministry to and with one another, each member of the church is asked to help serve Fellowship Hour at least
one Sunday a year. Each week, we pair two members/families with a Fellowship Committee member to host this important and
enjoyable community time. Our Fellowship Committee member will guide host families in setup, service and cleanup. On your
Sunday of service you may choose to contribute additional food or decorations for coffee hour, though this is not required.
The schedule for the coming year is set out in advance so all may plan accordingly. You may respond online with your interest,
preferences or restrictions at http://tinyurl.com/SGCCoffeeHour or via email to Debby at [email protected].
Thank you very much for your participation and service to others in our SGC family!

MAY FINANCIAL REPORT
Sometimes boring is a good thing—I hope that is true in this case. May receipts essentially equaled
expenditures (a net positive of just over $400) so the operating fund remains over $50,000 in the black—really
just where we were at the end of April. As I have been pointing out for several months, it is important to
remember this positive balance is largely a result of the church having been without a full-time senior minister
this year and also without a CE Coordinator until the second half of May. In addition the relatively mild winter
meant we saved on snow removal (about $5,000 less than last year).
Spring Glen’s endowment funds had another very good month. The Ministry Endowment Fund now stands at
$354,781.36 as of April 30 and the Building Endowment Fund at $377,095.75.
The summer is a time when contributions typically drop off since people are away. Most of the operating
expenses, however, continue year-round; and, therefore, to maintain as healthy a cash flow as possible, all
members are encouraged to continue making payments on their pledges through the summer months. Thank
you!

Keep it Green!
House committee would like to request the congregation's help in keeping interior and exterior doors closed
and locked and lights turned off when leaving the building. Closing doors helps with heating and safeguards
against potential fires, while turning off all lights helps
reduce our electricity usage. During this period of transition, it falls on all of us to help keep our church safe and
efficient. Thank you.
