Goderich is located along the beautiful shores of Lake Huron in
Ontario, Canada. The 8,000 citizens take pride in the
fact that Goderich is called Canada's prettiest
town. Goderich is the 1999 and 2008 Nations in Bloom
1st runner-up and was awarded 1998 Communities in
Bloom National champion. This year we won once again
for our category.....The Prettiest Town for Sure!
Our Unique Town Square...
Our unique, octagonal, downtown is a pleasure you won't want
to miss. "The Square" is heralded as being one of the most
unique outdoor shopping malls. In the heart of the Square are
the Huron County Court House and a beautiful downtown park.
The town boasts dozens of stores, quaint antique and specialty
shops and an indoor mall for your shopping enjoyment. Bring a
hearty appetite because Goderich has no shortage of fine and
varied eating establishments.
The Business Improvement Area
In 1977, the businesses of downtown Goderich believed that to
maintain a healthy downtown the efforts of the community had
to be pooled and the Goderich Business Improvement Area was
formed.
Over the last 27 years, the Goderich BIA has worked diligently
to promote and beautify our unique Courthouse Square
and the streets which radiate from it to form downtown
Goderich.

beaches, great swimming, windsurfing and sailing. The waterfront parks are generously
equipped with clean picnic shelters, public washrooms, running water and an abundance of

Goderich is easily accessible by land, water or air.
By Land: See map (above). Situated on Hwy #8 & Hwy#21, Goderich is located only a short
distance from major urban centres yet has a small town charm found only in cottage country.
By Air: Goderich Municipal Airport - Two paved and one grass
runways. There is a fully equipped automated weather station. All
aviation fuels are available and an aircraft maintenance facility is on
the field.
By Water: The Goderich Harbour is owned by the Town of Goderich and is operated by the
Goderich Port Management Corporation. It is the only seaway
depth harbour on the east side of Lake Huron. Over 100 lake
freighters use the port each year carrying cargoes of salt,
grain and calcium chloride. The port is the largest revenue
producer of all formerly owned Transport Canada’s ports.
Goderich has the only seaway depth port on
the east side of Lake Huron and is open
approximately 9 months of the year
depending on winter ice conditions. The local
wharfage available is 1,400 metres (4 600
feet). Lake and ocean vessels up to 222 metres (730 feet) in length can be
accommodated. The harbour depth is 8 metres (26 feet) - Seaway depth.
For 8 - 9 months of the year the port is the home to The Canadian Coast
Guard.
What Makes Goderich Unique

The settlement of Goderich was founded in 1827.
William “Tiger” Dunlop and John Galt, official founders, were
sent to the Huron Tract in 1826 to open the area up for
settlers. “Tiger” fell in love with the area and decided to make
it the headquarters of the Canada Company.
Goderich is one of the few communities in North America that
has its own flag.
Goderich is the County Seat of Huron County and it is also the
largest town in Huron County.
The town has a size of 7.91 square kilometres. Sifto Salt Mine
has more linear kilometres under the lake than the town of Goderich.
Since Goderich is located on the west shore of Lake Huron, it is one of
the few places where the sun sets over the water, and if you are
quick, you can see it set twice on the same evening.
25% of Goderich is dedicated to parkland!
Goderich’s downtown is a unique octagonal traffic circle known as
‘The Square.’
The Huron Historic Gaol is a unique and imposing octagonal building
which served as a County Jail since its opening in 1842 until 1972. It
is now a National Historic Site.
The great Wayne Gretzky took part in Canada’s longest running peewee
hockey tournament “Young Canada Week” twice.
Goderich hosts the annual, world renowned Celtic Roots Festival, where
people can enjoy world class art, dancing, and storytelling.
A member of the Royal Family declared that Goderich is “The Prettiest Town
in Canada.”
Not all Goderich addresses are within the town limits. This means, you may
have to go to Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Township to pay your taxes and Goderich Hydro
may not be your provider, but you pick up your mail packages at Goderich post office.
The OPP station on the Square closes at 3 PM every day and they are closed over weekends.
Courier service is Monday to Friday only
Ice cream and hotdogs are only available at the beach from
the May 24 weekend to the end of summer.
There are two skating rinks – make sure you know where your
kids’ programs are run

The complex at Wal*Mart is not in Goderich! So is the VLA also not part of Goderich…
WiFi Internet on the Square will cost you a little, but in the Library, it is free
If you live in Goderich you have to purchase a hotdog with fried
onions and popcorn from the light green Model T Ford Rotary
Hotdog Wagon. Best is to hang around and hear the stories
people tell you of umpteen years ago when they were young
and did the same.
Don’t miss the open-air Movie night on the Square – it is
fantastic!
Make sure you get gas before 10pm at night
Make sure you have the correct garbage stickers (you have to
pay on top of your taxes for garbage per bag). Shell on the
north end of town sells for ACW. They are not the same
stickers as for Goderich.
Stay in touch with the local newspaper (Signal Star), radio stations (The
Beach, The One, am920 and The Bull). Don’t expect to have good
reception for CBC station. You can also watch Channel 12 for what is
happening in the area.

Health Care
ALEXANDRA MARINE & GENERAL HOSPITAL: The Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital (AMGH) has been providing quality
health care services to the residents of the Town of Goderich and
surrounding municipalities for nearly 100 years. The history of
AMGH dates back to 1905 when the hospital, a house situated on
the corner of South and Britannia streets, was opened. In 1924
the hospital relocated to its current site and has undergone
numerous renovations and additions over the past eighty years in
response to the changing health care needs of the residents we
are privileged to serve.
In 2009 Goderich will welcome a CT scanner to service Huron
County
MAITLAND VALLEY MEDICAL CENTRE: The
Centre is a state of the art 14,000 sq feet
rooms, 12 practitioner offices, 2
support electronic medical records and a

Maitland Recreation Centre
Maitland Recreation Centre is located
in the Town of Goderich. Over 70,000
square feet, the building boasts a fivelane 25 metre lap pool; a children's
leisure pool; an on-deck whirlpool and
sauna; locker rooms, including a
special family locker room; gymnasium; indoor walking and jogging track; an
NHL size ice rink, an innovative wellness area consisting of cardio and strength
training equipment; aerobic studio and multi-purpose meeting rooms. Wheelchair accessible,

Hiking and Biking
The Tiger Dunlop Heritage Trail starts right by the harbour, and takes
the hiker high above the Maitland River on the Menesetung Bridge. For
those with a more energetic frame of mind there are twelve bicycle
trails, some on paved roads, some on gravel tracks,
but all guaranteed to take the cyclist by quiet
byways through Huron County.

Rules and Regulations
Official Plan The Official Plan sets out the municipality’s general policies for future land
use. Zoning by-laws put the plan into effect and provide for its day-to-day administration. It
contains specific requirements that are legally enforceable. Construction or new development
that does not comply with a zoning by-law is not allowed, and the municipality will refuse to
issue a building permit.
A zoning by-law divides the municipality into different land use zones, with detailed maps.
The by-law specifies the permitted uses (e.g. commercial or residential) and the required
standards (e.g. building size and location) in each zone.

Zoning Information - A zoning by-law controls the use of land in the community. It states

Local By-laws – Each community has various by-laws unique to their community. Goderich

Signage By-law - In order to preserve the historical look of the downtown and to keep the
aesthetics of the town, certain areas including the core is governed by a sign bylaw. For all

Heritage Rules - Goderich has a wealth of heritage buildings and no other area is as
concentrated as the beautiful downtown core. In order to preserve this area a committee of
council oversees build and rebuild to this area. For all the necessary information click

Winter Parking By-Law - Overnight parking of motor vehicles on municipal roadways is
prohibited during winter months (Nov 15 - Mar 15) and is an offence punishable by a fine. It
is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to push snow onto any roadway. Snow must be
placed on your own property, not on neighbouring properties or pushed across the street.
Frozen snow piles create a hazard for motorized vehicles.
Lawn Watering Restrictions - The Town of Goderich has instituted watering restrictions
during the following months: May 15- August 31. Allowable watering days are decided by
your address. If your municipal address is an odd number you may water on odd number
calendar days. If your address is an even number you may water on even number calendar
days.

Goderich has a diversified industrial base with numerous industries producing and/or
providing a wide range of products and services. Main industries include road machinery,
fabrication, salt mining, newspaper printing, grain storage and handling, dimension lumber
production and supply, aircraft painting and servicing and tourism. Serviced industrial land is
