New Tastes
At an April test kitchen tasting of some new
products, several of us were very enthusiastic
about a couple that we wanted you to know
about. It’s easy to miss new items, ‘midst the
many choices available for you, so here’s what we
found exciting in this recent tasting.
Marinated meats with real bourbon won our
raves—available in pork tenderloin, beef sirloin
steak tips, and boneless chicken cutlets. They’re
smoky tasting, but not too
sweet. They are lean, and
at first glance, one of our
nutritionists noted that these
meats seemed lower in sodium than many
marinated meats. They are thin enough to grill
quickly and then can be sliced thinly, against the
grain. Total time, for instance, for the steak tips, is
about 12 minutes. For the pork tenderloin, about
30 minutes is recommended. With a big salad and
crusty bread, what a great summer holiday meal
you’ll have. Prices vary; they range from $7.49
lb. for the pork tenderloin and $9.99 lb. for the
steak tips to $5.39 lb. for the chicken. These are
in Keeps Fresh packaging, so if your plans change
and you can’t grill them right away, you have lots
of time left to enjoy later.
The second product that really intrigued us
was the Italian Classics Asparagus & Cheese
Cappellacci. These are nice big pasta rounds,
folded to resemble large hats, stuffed with
asparagus and cheese. Our test kitchen culinary
expert had prepared these new raviolis by tossing
them (carefully) after cooking, with a little olive
oil, grated Pecorino Romano cheese, some fresh
asparagus and garnishing with lemon zest.
It was the lemon zest that made this quick meal
zing! They were a big hit when I served them
at a recent Sunday brunch. Look
for them in the Dairy Dept,
