good things. We have several issues ahead before Sheridan
Covers produces its first cover for the year, but first we have the
cover for GBFDC. The first official cover for 2015 from GBFDC
features IRONBRIDGE, Telford, Shropshire, and we hope you
like the cover shown on page 3. English Heritage gave us the
‘go ahead’ to feature Ironbridge, as it is in their care. We have
included a bit of fascinating history behind the building of this
bridge. I have learnt something I didn’t know whilst reading it. I
am always open to learning new facts and I love history. We
hope you enjoy reading it too.

DEADLINE FOR THE APRIL 2015 EDITION
Items for publication MUST be with the editor by
7th March 2015
Thank you to everyone who has sent in material for publication. If you
haven’t seen your article in this newsletter, please be assured that we will
use it in a future edition. We require more articles and features so that we

higher ground will get 4” by the
end of next week (end of
January). We have had some
pretty bad falls of snow and ice
in February before so wrap up
warm. Ensure you have all you
need to keep warm and fed,
and look in on elderly
neighbours to see if they need
any help. If you have a pet then
please bring it in doors during
the cold weather. A pet should
never be left outside at this time
of the year.
At the time of writing, we are
still waiting for the January
edition of Key News so I can’t
update you on anything
important that might be
announced. I would never
divulge sensitive information but
general information that
everyone should know about is
fine.
We would like to thank all
newsletter contributors. You did
keep us in mind over the
holiday season and we are very
grateful for the material sent in
to us.
Please don’t stop sending in
your material. We need all we
can get from you. Maybe you
have a thematic collection
running alongside your main
collection, if so, please look at it
and send us in several pages
on a theme with a bit about
each cover and why you collect

that particular theme. We think
many members will be very
interested to read such articles.
If you collect signed covers, or you
send away for signatures yourself,
then we would like to hear from
you. Perhaps you can put together
a page article about some of your
favourite signed covers and how
you obtained them. Think about
what you can assemble together
for publication to help your
newsletter with good material.
We have several very informative
articles for you inside this edition.
We also have a full MCS too. We
hope you manage to pick up some
bargain covers or some of the
more rare ones advertised.
However please respond quickly
otherwise the cover you want may
be gone.
We have an article on Producing
CDS covers by Edward Stedwick
on page 15. Reading about how
they managed to do their own
CDS covers might inspire more
members to DIY own CDS covers.
Many post offices have closed
now so it’s a bit of a challenge to
find one with a connection to a set
of stamps, but there will, at some
time or another, crop up a set of
stamps with a connection to a post
office within a few miles of where
you live or work. Try to take
advantage of it. The results might
surprise you.
Well, that’s it from us for another
year. See you in April. Until then,
Happy collecting.

GBFDC No.53 OFFICIAL COVER – Bridges 5th March 2015
We open our 2015 cover programme with a very popular theme, Bridges, and it will be a Limited
Edition of 75. Although not depicted on any of the stamps, we decided to feature one of our most
iconic bridges, and tourist attraction, Ironbridge, Telford, Shropshire.
If you would like to collect GBFDC Association official covers then please let Terry have your order
and cheque as soon as possible.
Bridges GBFDC official cover shown below for member information
Ironbridge is a settlement on the River Severn at the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge, in Shropshire
England. It lies in the civil parish of The Gorge, in the borough of Telford & Wrekin. Ironbridge
developed beside, and takes its name from, the famous Iron Bridge, a 30-metre (100 ft) cast iron
bridge that was built across the river in 1779.
In 1773, architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard wrote to a local ironmaster, John Wilkinson of Broseley,
to suggest building a bridge out of cast iron. Pritchard had previous experience with the design of
both wooden and stone bridges, and it is possible that he had integrated into these designs elements
of iron.
During the winter of 1773–74, local newspapers advertised a proposal to petition Parliament for leave
to construct an iron bridge with a single 120 feet (37 m) span. In 1775, a subscription of between
three and four thousand pounds was raised, and Abraham Darby III, the grandson of Abraham Darby
I and an ironmaster working at Coalbrookdale was appointed treasurer to the project.
In March 1776, the Act to build a bridge received Royal Accent with legal counsel from Thomas
Addenbrooke, and Abraham Darby III was commissioned to cast and build the bridge. In May 1776,
the trustees withdrew Darby's commission, and instead advertised for plans for a single arch bridge to
be built in "stone, brick or timber. No satisfactory proposal was made, and the trustees agreed to go
with Pritchard's design.
Continued……….
3
Design
The bridge is built from five cast iron ribs that give a span of 30.6 metres (100 ft). Exactly 378 long
tons 10 cwt (847,800 lb or 384.6 t) of iron was used in the construction of the bridge, and there are
almost 1700 individual components, the heaviest weighing 5.5 long tons (5.6 t). Components were
cast individually to fit with each other, rather than being of standard sizes, with discrepancies of up to
several centimeters between 'identical' components in different locations
Decorative rings and ogees between the structural ribs of the bridge suggest that the final design was
of Pritchard, as the same elements appear in a gazebo he rebuilt. A foreman at the foundry, Thomas
Gregory, drew the detailed designs for the members, resulting in the use of carpentry jointing details
such as mortice and tenon joints and dovetails.
Cost
Darby had agreed to construct the bridge with a budget of £3,250 and £3,250 was raised by
subscribers to the project. Whilst the actual cost of the bridge is unknown, contemporary records
suggest it was as high as £6,000, the excess being born by Darby, who was highly indebted from
other ventures as well. However, by the mid-1790s the bridge was highly profitable, and tolls were
giving the shareholders an annual divided of 8 per cent.
It was opened on New Year’s Day 1781 and it continued in full use by ever-increasing traffic until
closed and designated an Ancient Monument in 1934. English Heritage now looks after the Iron
Bridge but Ironbridge Museum looks after the surrounding museums.
In 1986, the Ironbridge Gorge became one of the first group of 7 UK sites to be awarded World
Heritage status by UNESCO. The designation of the Ironbridge Gorge as a World Heritage Site
recognised the area’s unique contribution to the birth of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century,
the impact of which was felt across the world. It was the achievements of pioneering industrialists
including Abraham Darby, William Reynolds and John Wilkinson that led to the Ironbridge Gorge
becoming by the close of the 18th century the most technologically advanced area in the world. The
surviving built and natural environment with its museums, monuments and artefacts, including the
world famous Iron Bridge of 1779, serve to remind us of this area’s unique contribution to the history
and development of industrialised society.

The Year of the Child and the Walton sextuplets
By Selwyn Goodacre
On BBCTV on 17 April 2014, there was a delightful programme about the famous Walton
sextuplets. The programme featured all six girls (Luci, Sarah, Jennie, Ruth, Hannah and Kate)
and their parents, giving a full account of their lives up to the present time. They were born in
November 1983, so are now 21 years old.
In my collection I have two covers signed by both parents and the 6 girls – see the illustrations. I
imagine the first was signed in around 1989-90, with the second a few years later, judging by the
increasing maturity of the girls’ writing.
Though they now style
themselves as Luci
and Jennie, it is
interesting that on the
two
covers
they
signed their names as
Lucy
and
Jenny
(rather oddly Jennie
spells her name with
only one ‘n’ on the
second cover!), One
wonders when they
decided to change the
spelling
of
their
names. The Brown
family also signed the
second
cover
–
readers will recall that
Louise Brown was the
first ‘test-tube’ baby
born in this country.
Some months ago, I
wrote to the Walton
parents saying how I
had
enjoyed
the
programme
and
tentatively
asking
them
about
the
spelling changes, and
if they could let me
know the name of the
dealer
who
had
organised the signings
– and how many covers they actually signed. Sadly I had no reply. Nevertheless I treasure
these covers – it is nice to find first day covers relating in such a strong way to contemporary
events of importance.

Let’s Get Connected……..by Nigel McGarry
One interesting and fun connection to link literary anniversaries to an FDC is Reading in Berkshire or
as it states in a normal FDI Handstamp Reading, Berks. Great examples would be Reading
Shakespeare in 1964, Reading Dickens and Wordsworth in 1970 and the cover shown below for
Tennyson!
When England won the World Cup in 1966, I was sitting in a change booth in an Amusement Arcade
in Clacton on Sea, Essex. Since that time I collected many covers commemorating both the event
and the fact that England won. Below is a lovely GPO Cover that bears the original and winners
stamp cancelled by Liverpool FDI Handstamp on 18th August 1966 - a nice error. The handstamp is
relevant as Liverpool hosted several world cup matches during the tournament.

Members Cover Sale
If you are an ordinary member and would like to sell your covers free of charge, then be sure to let
the editor have your list in good time for publication.
All the covers listed are being sold by the member whose contact details appear at the beginning of
their listing. We have laid out each set of listings as requested by the vendor so layouts will probably
differ from person to person. If left to the editor to arrange then the listings will take on a more uniform
appearance. Prices given are the cost of each cover and buyers must contact the seller direct to
negotiate the sale. The seller may or may not add postage costs so it is up to the seller and buyer to
come to their own arrangement. All that remains is to wish you good luck.

- END OF SALE MCS How to submit your covers for sale
Please submit your list either by post or email (typed in a Word Doc.) Please make it LEGIBLE otherwise it will
not be included. Send them by e-mail to [email protected].. We would prefer you NOT to list covers in a
table as it makes formatting difficult. Any member can sell covers via the newsletter free of charge. If you require
further details then please contact the Editor.
Please, if possible, only send the list of covers for the next newsletter rather than sending a large list or several
lists. It is becoming a little confusing to work out which list belongs to whom and which edition it is for. Thank
you
1) Please list them in a Microsoft Word Document (NOT in a table though). The more details you include then
the less space there will be for your covers and less covers will be listed.
2) Either email your list or send it by post to Phil Sheridan. Hon. Editor, GBFDC Association, P.O. Box 99,
Widnes, Cheshire WA8 0NN. E-mail: [email protected] When posting hand-written lists please make sure
we can read them. It is probably best to print all lists.
3) Deadline for all items for inclusion in to any newsletter is ALWAYS 7th of the previous month to the
newsletter publication. Please see top of page 2 and inside back page in EVERY newsletter
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Whist we are happy to receive lists of covers for the MCS written in long hand for members who do not have a
computer (or access to email), we would ask those member who do have a computer and (or) access to email
to take the trouble to type out their lists in a Word Doc. or directly in to an email and email it to us. This will save
us a lot of work and time in transferring the list to computer and trying to decipher hand writing. If you submit a
list in long hand and we know you have a computer and email then we are sorry but we can’t guarantee to put
your list in the newsletter. We hope you will understand. We are trying to make things a little easier for Phil &
Dot due to their ongoing health problems

PRODUCING OUR OWN CDS COVERS….by Edward Stredwick
A friend and I decided to produce our own FDCs, so let me tell you a story……….
Firstly we had to pick a name, and what issue for 2014 would be best for us. Finding a post office with the
right connections to the issue was not easy. Hence we decided on the Prime Ministers. This gave us two
possibilities (depending on who was featured). The two choices were Heath and Wilson, both being areas of
Cardiff and Prime Ministers. As Ted Heath was not on the stamps, that left Wilson. There is a Wilson Road in
Ely, Cardiff. Bingo we have a connection, but this brings new problems in to play. Do we design our own
covers or use Post Office blank covers, with the added cost of our own design we went with the blanks.
The next problem to
overcome was how
many we do, 10, 20,
or more! After
talking to dealers
and collectors alike,
we decided on just
20 covers (this being
our first go at it).
We did 10 covers
with full sets and 10
covers with just the
Wilson stamp. All
have the Wilson Rd.
CDS.
The whole experience was quite enjoyable and fairly painless (except the pain on the wallet) and will be
repeated in 2015.
Also, and just for fun, I did an
extra cover featuring Churchill
using the 6 x 4d Battle of Britain
set, the 4d from the 1965
Churchill set, along with the
1974 set and, of course,
Churchill from the 2014 set. I
have provided photocopies of
both covers for fellow members
to see & enjoy.
I hope my little story inspires
other collectors to try their own
hand at producing FDCs.
Many thanks go to my friend,
Roger Gilbert, for his computer
know-how, and for putting up
with my lack of it. And thanks
to dealer, Mark Grimsley, for his advice and expertise and patience, and to the gentleman behind the counter
in Wilson Road Post Office.

Unusual Covers
First Day Covers with CDS cancellations never cease to surprise me. Very often connections are
missed. I certainly missed the connection with this cover, kindly sent in by Bill Norburn. He found it
on ebay and, because everyone else missed the connection also, Bill acquired it for 99p, plus
postage. Bill said he liked the connection because of the two sets of crossed hands on the two lower
values (enlarged scan of the cancellation in figure 2).
If you have similar CDS covers in your collection that you have come across during your rummaging
through boxes of covers and thought, yes, I like the CDS connection on that cover, then do send us a
scan or good quality photocopy of it and we will publish it. If you can give us a line or two about how
you found it etc., then it would be helpful.
HANDCROSS CDS
cancelling the two
lower values. Both sets
of hands are crossed!

NEWSLETTERS BY E-MAIL
Many members are delighted with the PDF emailed version of the Newsletter. Not only does
receiving it this way cut down on having to find storage for paper newsletters around the
home, as all PDF Newsletters can be stored in a file of its own on your computer desktop, but
it means you can read the newsletter at A4 size and in colour. You can print out all the pages
at any time and at any size, or just one page if you so wish.
We do understand that for a variety of reasons many members do not want to receive their
copies via email and would prefer to continue with a hard copy. This is not a problem and we
would be happy to continue to send them out via the post.
From the point of view of our European and Overseas members emailing your newsletter
would mean that you could be on a par with everyone else when it comes to the opportunities
of purchasing items advertised in the newsletter, for instance in the Members Cover Sale.
Emailing the newsletter also saves your association money in paying for the newsletter
printing and in postage costs. At the time of writing we are emailing the newsletter to 100
members and are keen to increase this number.
Would you be willing to receive your A4 colour newsletter via email instead of a black and
white A5 hard copy in the mail ? Yes, then please contact Terry Barnett with your email
address.
If you already receive your newsletter by email then please don’t forget to let us know if you
change your email address.
That’s it from us for this edition. Please do look in your collections and see if you can put
together an article for us. It will be most appreciated.

to the Editor P.O. Box 99, Widnes, Cheshire

Dear Editor……
Could you tell me why it's not possible for me to have a realisation list of covers sold in our
cover auction? I've requested a list along with a list of covers not sold, sending a self addressed
envelope, post paid, so not to put any cost to the association. I've received the unsold list but
told we don't have a list of prices realised. We've had one list in Coverage but that is the only
one I've seen, none for the last two. I think there must be other members who would like to see

how the cover market is doing. It must be just as easy to print a list of covers sold as those not
sold. It would also help you in filling a page in Coverage.
