On December 20th, share in the joy of the holiday
season, courtesy of the Willmore City Heritage Association, together with the 1st District Council Office,
Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Parks and Recreation, , Millworks, Walmart, and Communidades Con
Poder! For the second year in a row, SNOW will fall
in Willmore City at Drake Park. There will be a giant
Bounce House, crafts, vendors, bacon wrapped hot
dogs, face painting, photos with Santa, music, and
last year’s biggest hit, next to the SNOW, BuildYour-Own-Gingerbread House. Shop for last minute
toys in the Santa’s Workshop tent. Bring a can of
food to donate to Food Finders and get a ticket for
an opportunity drawing of a free bike! Emceed by
the Always Exciting Ms. Mimi Masher, founder of
the Long Beach Junior Roller Derby, the afternoon
will be truly fun-filled.

Your hardworking Board and newsletter staff take
December off, so there is no newsletter for January.
However, there WILL be a meeting, as usual, at
Drake Park at 7:00 p.m.. Our guest speaker in
January will be the incredibly awesome Jan Van
Dijs, of JR Van Dijs Construction Management Inc.
Mr. Van Dijs has been responsible for the building
and/or restoration and renovation some of the most
beautiful buildings in our city: The Art Theater,
Psychic Temple, The Arts Building, and the Edison
Lofts. He also built the first Long Beach parklet at
Lola’s on Retro Row.
JR van Dijs, Inc. has completed projects in the
Belmont Shore, Bixby Knolls, Downtown, East Village Arts District, and Retro Row areas of Long
Beach. They have also worked in the cities of Los
Angeles, Rancho Palos Verdes, Santa Ana, San Pedro, and Venice Beach.
Previous and current clients include the Berlin Bistro, Bixby Land Company, the City of Long Beach,
East Village Creative Offices, Ebell Theatre and
Lofts, Intertrend Communications, the Lafayette
Hotel, Lee & Associates, the Long Beach Museum of
Art, Long Beach Ronald McDonald House, Lyon Art
Supply, Portfolio Coffeehouse, Ratkovich Developers, the Royal Palms Apartments, Temple Beth El,

and YMCA Los Cerritos. Jan also sits on The Cultural Heritage Commission.
Jan has been a great friend to the Willmore City
Heritage Association, donating many, many hours of
his time and expertise. He and his company assisted us with the installation of The Jergins Pillars in
the Willmore Heritage Garden, The Children’s Gateway Garden and shortly, The Amphitheater at
Chavez Park improvement/expansion. Join us as
we hear about the ins and outs of the many projects
of this, we’re-lucky-to-have-him, Citizen of Long
Beach.

Every year WCHA and many of the other Historic
District Associations decorate the jewel of the Willmore City Historic District, the Bembridge House.
On November 23rd, responsible as always for the
exterior, WCHA decorated the front of the main
house and carriage house. For the first time there
will be lights on one of the large Deodar Cedars in
the front yard. We were very happy to see new faces
in our group picture this year!
Each historic group is responsible for decorating
one room. Needless to say, a friendly spirit of competition ensues, and each tries to outdo the other
for grace and charm! As accurate to the time period
as possible, pink flocked Christmas trees or colored
light wheels are never part of the décor!
The Bembridge House Victorian Christmas event
happened on December 7th. BUT in case you
missed it, you can still enjoy the beautiful decorations and a little visit to a delightfully enchanting
time in history every Tuesday and Saturday during
