INSIDE THIS
ISSUE:
We kicked off the club with a
snow removal event on Saturday,
February 28 in the MacGregorAlbert community! Due to a lack
of snow, only five homes requested our help, but we were able to
clear off some of the surrounding
sidewalks for pedestrians! We
would like to give out a special
thanks to all of those who volunteered to take the time out of
their day to give back to the community. The Random Act of Kindness Krew also participated in

Clubs Talent Showcase
The Federation of Students
ran its first Clubs Talent Showcase on March 19th 2015 in
the SLC Great Hall. Providing a
stage and an opportunity for
the different Feds clubs to
display their talents, we had
the UW Cabaret club, Rubiks
cube club, some of the A
Capella groups, the Music club
and UW Hip Hop perform at
the event. With a great audience to witness the showcase,
we can safely say it was a
great success.
vided those non-cultural groups to
also participate hence, not excluding anyone. We were fortunate
enough to use the same stage as
was used in Cultural Caravan
which added the extra “touch” to
feeling like an actual talent show.
It was a good platform for
many of the social clubs to
make their presence known
within the university and also
to recruit new members to
their club. In the future years,
we hope to continue on with
this initiative and draw in a
more diverse group of clubs
to put up a show for the students.
A huge thank you once again
to all the clubs who came out and
performed and we hope to see
you all back next year along some
more of you!
Especially since it took
place on the same day as Cultural Caravan, this event pro-

The Feds Volunteer Extravaganza took place in the Bombshelter
pub this year and it was a grand
success, allowing students to mingle,
eat some amazing Bomber food, and
learn more about the dedicated
volunteers who have made a contribution to campus life! It offered a
wide variety of entertainment right
from a magic show and a photo
booth all within a circus theme.
Everyone had a great time socializing, mixing and mingling with
one another, celebrating each other’s accomplishments. The Feds
clubs on campus always do a great
job throughout the term with all of
their events and this is a great way
to appreciate and thank all those
volunteers for a job well done and
for all their successes throughout
the term.
The event always ends off with
an awards ceremony highlighting
some of the clubs and volunteers
for their outstanding efforts and
this year was no different. The
winners included:
Executive: Cameron Drever
Coordinator: Polina Mylox
Initiative: ICSN International Night
New Club: Random Act of Kindness Krew
Volunteer: Jimmy Quach
President: Gianine Mapula

Islam Awareness Week
(IAW) is an annual event that
takes place in the Great Hall of
the Student Life Centre at the
University of Waterloo. It is a
student-based initiative geared
towards creating awareness, and
breaking fallacies and stereotypes
about Islam on university campuses across North America. This
year, it was held during March
10th-12th by the UW Muslim
Students’ Association, with the
IAW’s purpose is to provide
an inspirational retreat where one
can question their own spirituality
and broaden their understanding
of Islam. A variety of activities
were held to create an Islamic
cultural atmosphere including
interactive booths, creative displays, educational literature and
entertaining activities such as our
Henna Booth and our Hijab Photobooth. This year, we are proud
to have featured IAW’s first Spirituality/Prayer Tent- exclusively
designed as a relaxing haven for
individuals to explore their personal relationship with God or
even just to have a peaceful moment for prayer/meditation in a
stimulating environment.
Every night, a special event
was held. These included lectures
from Muslims of different backgrounds and walks of life, and an
Islamic Scholar (Sheikh Ramzy)
discussing the attributes of God.
Additionally, the third day also
featured a Converts Panel where
individuals shared their stories of
their journey to Islam. Lastly,
IAW closed off with “Muslims
Got Talent”, an exciting display
of talents by the Muslim youth;
featuring nasheeds by Kenan
Habib, poetry by Afnan Naeem,
and a musical duet by Moez and
Yusra Battikh. At prayer times, a
group prayer was held for the
general public to be able to experience a real-life demonstration
of Muslim prayers- “Salah”.
The event was a great success due to the active participation and curiosity of UW students. We are very proud of
everyone involved. If you missed
it this year, make sure to attend
the following years for more
awesomeness headed your way!

Students for United Way is a volunteer
driven organization that promotes volunteerism by connecting students at the
University of Waterloo to the KitchenerWaterloo Community. Members take part
in volunteering opportunities and strive to
make the K-W area a better place for
everyone. Whether you are volunteering
to improve your resume or doing it to
become more connected, volunteering
with Students for United Way will benefit
both you and the people living in the K-W
area.
Students for United Way has been focussing with helping The Working Centre to
respond to unemployment and poverty,
develop social analysis, and engage in creative action. Students for United Way currently has volunteers at two of the Working Centre’s services: the St. John’s Kitchen and The Green Door.
The St. John’s Kitchen prepares meals for
over 300 people. Volunteers help prepare
and serve meals. More importantly, volunteers contribute by creating a welcoming
place for everyone.

At UW Style Society, (or UWSS
for short!) our goal is to showcase and
celebrate the unique styles found
around campus by promoting individuality and expression in fashion. We host
fun events throughout each term, like
DIY sessions and creative projects.
UWSS has two main projects; one
of which is Ring Road Runway, where
great opportunity to display your creativity!
we photograph and interview stylish
students around campus. Another
major project is our lookbook, WaterLook.
Every term, UWSS seeks out
members to be models, make-up artists, photographers, and stylists to
convey a variety of styles in a series of
photographs. For Winter 2015, our
theme for WaterLook was movies, and
everyone worked together to host
photo shoots and create looks inspired by popular films.

Tales from Terrible Hack
Yu Chen Hou
UW AppDev

Most hackathons nowadays are about
coming up with innovative new ideas and
making plausible startup prototypes. Last
weekend, the AppDev club decided to organize something different.
This one is about having fun and programming for the sake of programming, even
if it means reinventing a less efficient wheel.
For a whole day, 60 hackers were holed up in
EIT, with the ultimate goal of coming up with
the most terrible inventions, ever. Shakeactivated camera? Sure. Tinder for babies?
Why not? Autocorrect that suggests the
worst possible word? Brilliant.

Actually a good idea: Rate with Science
(LINK)
Rate With Science is a web app for finding a
rating scale between two arbitrary things.
Ever wanted to rate something on a scale of
David Hasselhoff to the Eiffel Tower? Well,
now you can.
Honourable Mentions:
Ayy Lmao: A chat app that replies to everything you say with “ayy lmao”. Amazing.
Shake Activated Camera: A camera app that
takes a crystal clear picture when you shake
it. Also includes a 360 NO SCOPE feature!
Wouldn’t it be nice that when you visit a
website, it tries to give you a seizure?
Least efficient wheel: Shitsort
Modern computers can sort numbers really
quickly, so why not use Shitsort to sort large
amounts of data with an extremely efficient
1/[65536^n] time!
AutoCompletelyObscure: Autocomplete
app that suggests the least useful words to
everything you type.
Compatibility Award: Youtube on Pebble
Like YouTube? Have a Pebble smartwatch?
Why not combine both? Enjoy watching
videos on a breathtaking 2 frames per second.
UW Believe 4 kids donates to Kids Ability

UW Believe 4 Kids

Believe 4 Kids is a non-profitable club
that holds events such as bake sales and
movie nights; all of our proceeds go to a
local kids charity.
This year our team was able to donate $1000 to a charity called KidsAbility.
A few members from our team visited
Kids Ability last week, a school located in
Waterloo that helps kids with all types of
disabilities.
The fundraising coordinator for the
school gave us a tour of the facility; and
we were able to see the various types of
classrooms and different types of physical
activity the children at the school were
utilizing.
We are positive that our donation
will contribute to aiding the school in
continuing to help children from birth to
4
their disabilities. The fundraising coordinator also wrote out a large cheque to
display our contribution to them.
As this semester comes to a close,
UW Believe 4 Kids held one final event
on Monday, March 30th - a movie night
in the Great Hall with snacks and other
refreshments to continue fundraising.
We hope to continue raising money
through our events in the upcoming
semesters and donating it to different
children’s charities across the KitchenerWaterloo Region.

Cultural Caravan 2015

Cultural Caravan turned out to be an
interesting experience. We started off thinking it would simply involve connecting with
clubs and letting them know how the event
would be arranged this year. Little did we
know! Chasing deadlines, music dilemmas,

years of age with their rehabilitation and in coping with
scheduling debacles; it got kind of crazy. But
we wouldn’t trade a single second of it.
It’s important to realize that everyone
involved in the production of this event is a
student; a typical, sleep-deprived Waterloo
student. So the fact that all the performers
put in so much hard work to create a beautiful showcase in the midst of their demanding schedules is one that we highly appreciate and commend.
The outfits, the music, the amazing
energy of the audience made it an unforgettable night.
In case you weren’t able to watch this
year’s Caravan event, worry not! You can

individuals and groups proceeded to take
center stage and perform what they had put
together for the show.
Here, the hosts of the show did a phenomenal job in keeping the vibe informal and
friendly. Attesting to this is the fact that a
number of audience members who hadn't
signed up to perform spontaneously asked to
do something and were given the opportunity
to take center stage.
On the evening of March 25th, University of Waterloo's Indian Connection, fondly
known as UWIC, came out with one of its
larger events this term: Late Night Lattes The Coffeehouse.
75 odd students gathered to watch their
fellow peers perform the talents of their
choosing. From singing to dancing to recitation of poetry to stand up comedy to instrumental numbers - the auditorium resonated
with numerous and varied talents. Hosted in
the Biology 1 building, the energy and fervor
in the room was tangible. Approximately 20
Undoubtedly, however, the biggest contributor in making the event the grand success that it was is the fantastic audience,
whose energy and enthusiasm never waned.
Every talent was welcomed with open arms
and cheered on. Performers who had a small
fumble and wanted to start over or perform
a number or two that wasn't previously rehearsed were met with resounding support.
We ended the night of with a freefor all karaoke session which got the
group pumped up as we reminisced
through both new and old songs. To end
off the night, we also screened the
Cricket Semi-Finals between Australia
and India which also received a large
audience.
