Every person who comes into contact with the CDA Foundation, whether
as a patient, donor or volunteer, is forever changed. Many patients
arrive at the clinic in pain and are relieved of their discomfort. They are
able to embrace life once again. Some have been without teeth for
years and have their smiles, and their lives, restored. And then there
are the volunteers —
dentists who are reminded why they went into the
profession and thousands of community members who want to help their
neighbors. It is an experience we never forget.
The same is true for the Student Loan Repayment Grant recipients who,
thanks in part to the CDA Foundation, are able to embrace a career in
public health, returning smiles for hundreds who cannot access the care
they need.
On the following pages you will read about the lives changed by the
CDA Foundation. Patients. Sponsors. Dentists. Dental assistants. Dental
hygienists. Community members. The real people who changed lives
and, in return, had their lives changed.

After 25 years in the banking
industry as a vice president,
Jacqueline moved from Arizona,
where she was employed, to
San Francisco thinking it would
be relatively easy to find a job.
Luck, however, was not on her
side. After the move, she began
having health issues and was
diagnosed with diabetes, which
caused serious damage to her
teeth and gums, leaving her with only two front teeth. All of this was happening while
she was hunting for a job.
She would make it to the second or third round of interviews, yet was continuously
skipped over for the job. She began to realize that it wasn’t her experience holding
her back, it was her smile. “It was devastating,” Jacqueline said. “I tried to hide it when
interviewing but you could tell.” After continued rejection, she decided to make a change.
Jacqueline received her new smile at CDA Cares Solano, and on that day, her life
changed forever. The CDA Foundation and CDA developed CDA Cares to help
Californians like Jacqueline who experience barriers to care.
She began to realize that it wasn’t

The many dentists and dental professionals volunteering at CDA Cares provide
fillings, extractions, cleanings, oral health education and full and partial dentures to
around 2,000 patients at each event. And it couldn’t happen without the support of
the many sponsors.

Student Loan Repayment Grant

identify myself with the patient population,” said Dr. Amin, who now practices at the
Family HealthCare Network in Woodlake in Tulare County. “It is my responsibility to
see my patients not only improve their dental health but also their overall lifestyle.”
The Student Loan Repayment Grant program provides tremendous impact across the
state — lessening the burden of student loan debt so that new dentists like Dr. Amin
can embrace a dream to work in public health or in an underserved community.
“This is the least I can do to empower the youth of my community and support their
pursuit of happiness.” Having had the opportunity to practice dentistry in private
offices as well as hospital-based and corporate structures, Dr. Amin said she has
discovered her true passion lies within a community health center setting, and
receiving this grant from the Foundation will allow her to follow that passion.
This grant provides up to $105,000 over three years toward repayment of student
loans in exchange for a commitment to care for underserved individuals. Today,
a dental education can exceed $300,000 and this loan repayment grant can
significantly decrease the new dentist’s educational debt. Since 2002, the Student
Loan Repayment Grant program has placed dentists into community clinics where
they’ve helped more than 72,000 patients and provided nearly $18 million in care
for individuals who experience barriers to care. And, almost all of those dentists
have remained not only in public health but in the communities where they
first served.

Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award
After graduating with his DDS from the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni
School of Dentistry in 1986, Allen Wong, DDS, EdD, went on to receive certificates
in Advanced Clinical Dentistry and Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD)
in 1987 and 2001, respectively, and a doctoral degree in professional education
and leadership in 2010. In addition to owning a private practice in San Francisco
and his position as director of the Highland Hospital Oral Surgery Restorative Implant
Program, Dr. Wong devotes his time to his roles as director of the AEGD program
and the Hospital Dentistry Program, both held at the University of the Pacific, Arthur
A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.

award acknowledges and
supports eligible faculty
affiliated with the state’s
six dental schools for their
exceptional leadership,
innovation, collaboration,
compassion, philanthropic
spirit and integrity in
dental education. It was
developed to support
individuals who contribute
to the scholarly and
creative activities of
California dental students.
Dr. Wong was selected for the CDA Foundation’s 2014 award in part because of his
demonstrated leadership, collaboration and innovation — providing his senior students
with hands-on experience in the hospital treating patients under general anesthesia. As
director of UOP’s hospital dentistry program, Dr. Wong says he incorporates medical
assessment, pharmacology, patient management, interprofessional consultations and
firsthand experiences treating patients with special needs.
“My colleagues and I have focused on bringing attention to the growing needs
of the medically compromised through hands-on teaching and interaction of
physicians, nurses and specialists,” said Dr. Wong, who recently added perinatal
care to the service and education of his students.
In addition to his proven leadership and compassion, Dr. Wong’s philanthropic
efforts were another reason he was selected for the award as he regularly gives his
time as a volunteer dentist, including organizing and participating in a number of
international dental mission trips, volunteer clinics and Special Olympics events.

Russ Webb, DDS, is a
retired oral surgeon in
Sacramento. The moment
he graduated from dental
school, Dr. Webb began
his humanitarian efforts.
He was one of the first
volunteers to take a lead
role in developing the CDA Cares events and is currently a
key member of the management team, providing wisdom,
experience and passion through countless volunteer hours.
He and his wife, Kathi, provide their expertise in many
venues including the dental operatory they developed
for the Gathering Inn — a nonprofit that supports the
homeless and where Dr. Webb provides dental services. In
addition to his community work, he supports and inspires
the next generation of dentists by providing scholarships at
his alma mater, the University of California, Los Angeles.

Webb Family Grant
Dr. Webb and his wife, Kathi Webb, have both been on a path of compassion
through volunteerism as far back as their college days. As founding contributors to
the CDA Foundation, they have a long, personal connection with the organization. In
fact, one of their first dates was volunteering at a free dental clinic in the San Joaquin
Valley. For years, their giving spirit has inspired others in their dental community and
is now the impetus for this, the Webb Family Grant.
This grant, funded by the Webb Family Endowment, provides an annual award of up
to $5,000 toward educational expenses for the individual selected as runner-up for
the CDA Foundation Student Loan Repayment Grant.
