SEIZING THE DAY
Life’s rewarding experiences – do they just happen,
unplanned and unexpected? Or do these moments
only occur as a plan comes together?
This Vacation Guidewill help you make the most of your time
in Virginia Beach. You’ll find places to stay, what’s cool to
see, things you won’t want to miss doing, and where to find it
all. This is your handbook for creating your best vacation. Use
it along with the videos and f eatures you’ll find at
www.VisitVirginiaBeach.com.
Items listed throughout the guide are identified by a color
block, showing in which area of Virginia Beach you’ll find
a particular attraction or accommodation. The color-coded
map on page 5 shows the areas.
To help you find your way around when you’re here, there
is a pullout map page in the center of the guide.

Beyond memories,
you experience a feeling.
It’s the thrill of loading the car with beach
gear, tucking in your beside-themselves-withexcitement family, and hitting the open road
that leads to the oceanfront. It’s the sweet
reminiscence of youth as you watch your
children chasing crabs for the first time. It’s the
warmth of the sun’s rays on your neck as you
step out for the first summer beach session.
TRIP ADVISOR TRAVELERS’ CHOICE 2012
Here, you’ll sense a year-round summer
fragrance to the air and rhythm to the streets,
the essence of the beach life. Virginia Beach is
the feeling; the adventure is discovering it for
yourself. Explore our beaches, experience our
wildlife, and embrace our culture. Come live the
life and love the moment.

application of effort or concern
Try on another way of living.
Hotel or vacation rental home? Atlantic Ocean or Chesapeake Bay?
Peace and quiet or right in the thick of it? Maybe somewhere in
between? Whatever it is you desire in a beach, our lovely stretch
of Virginia coast aims to please.
There’s more to this than soft sands and rolling waves. It’s the
way you feel when your lungs fill with salt air, and the possibility
of a day all to yourself. Or the sensation of the warm sun as it
evaporates tiny drops of ocean from your skin. There’s the echo
of birds and laughter that cause you to wonder what you’ll see
when you open your eyes. You might be dreaming; you might be
feeling this for the first time in a long time.
You might be more yourself than ever.

The place to see and be seen.
Our three-mile boardwalk is only part of what makes the
Resort Area so irresistible. From Croatan Beach to the
south, up to the North End Beaches, this is where V
 irginia
Beach reveals its outgoing nature. There’s a park-like
atmosphere here that goes on for miles.
With a separate bike path, the boardwalk is p
 erfect for
roller-blading, jogging or just strolling. Sunbathers come
for the wide sandy beaches. Surfers come for the waves.
Everyone comes for the people-watching.

YOU CAN’T PUT A PRICE ON THIS
Some secrets are meant to be shared.
Kinder, gentler waves, can be found in the calm waters of the Chesapeake Bay, just
off Shore Drive. From swimming to sand c
astles to volleyball, all the traditional beach
rituals are here. And nothing beats an evening stroll or dining at a fine restaurant
as the sun sets over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Anglers can fish from the
shore, Lynnhaven Pier, or launch a boat and head out to the heart of the Bay. Runners,
bikers and campers can explore the lush green of First Landing State Park.
GETTING THERE: From the Resort Area head north on Atlantic Avenue until it turns into
Shore Drive. Continue west, through First Landing State Park to the Bay Area.

Coastal village charm in its natural state.
Located 15 miles south of (and 180º opposite) the Resort Area, Sandbridge is
a secluded beach hideaway of pristine sand dunes and dancing sea oats.
Beachside, the Atlantic never fails to entertain. And for those craving even more of
the great outdoors, the marshes and open waters of Back Bay National Wildlife
Refuge and False Cape State Park make for great kayaking, biking, hiking,
birding and fishing. Vacation rental homes and condominium rentals are
available year-round.
GETTING THERE: From the Resort Area head south on Pacific A

which turns into General Booth Boulevard, then left onto Princess Anne
Road. Continue straight onto Sandbridge Road.

There’s nothing like suddenly spotting a pod of dolphins glide
through the water, and knowing they see you too. Or a still and
silent grey heron, completely unimpressed by your presence in
his river. These are everyday experiences here, yours to discover.

Coastal
Cuisine
Where the waters of the Atlantic Ocean meet the Chesapeake Bay, you
can count on the freshest catch – tuna, rockfish, mahi, crab, you name it.
In fact, freshness is a guiding principle in Virginia Beach kitchens, where
just-picked produce fuses with just-caught seafood for surprising and
palate-pleasing results. Here, the casual beach resort lifestyle you enjoy
has a place at the table – and you won’t pay an arm and a leg for the East
Coast’s best cuisine.
Imagine fresh tuna, pan seared and topped with an ancho p
 epper, sundried
tomato, and shiitake mushroom salsa. Or clams baked with herbs, peppers,
onions and bacon. Pan-fried lump crab cake served with sweet bell pepper
relish and lemon crème fraîche. Oysters topped with shrimp, bacon, leeks,
lemon and a touch of Tabasco®. Is your mouth watering?
Whether you crave exotic flavors, the simple beauty of fresh ingredients,
or a truly new twist on traditional favorites, Virginia Beach restaurants
promise atmosphere and taste-tempting pleasure.

The Perfect Setting
Virginia Beach cuisine is marked by fresh
ingredients, with flavors coming t ogether in
unexpected and perfectly seasoned ways.
Yet, there’s an art to creating the ideal d
 ining
experience that doesn’t happen in a kitchen.
Here are some suggestions.
Create your own progressive dinner. Sample the resort
area. Rent a beach cruiser, hop off at different spots for appetizers,
a main course and dessert. Here’s hoping you burn as many calories as you take
in. Contact local food tour companies for options.
Celebrate local favorites. Let events and festivals throughout the year be your
guide to the area’s most celebrated specialties. The Virginia Beach R
 estaurant
Association’s Restaurant Week, Beach Event’s Mediterranean Weekend and the
East Coast She Crab Soup Classic are just a sampling of the delicious events,
wine and beer festivals offering great deals and fantastic flavor.
Breakfast hideaways. Rise early and find your way to one of several unique local
breakfast haunts. Settle in for a crab omelet, or a stack of p
 ancakes with local
strawberries on the side. Fish tales from the resident “old salts” are free of charge.
Fresh catch, provided by you. Local restaurants like Waterman’s and Dockside
will prepare your catch in a variety of ways.
Paddle to Blue Pete’s. Take a guided Paddle Feast tour to kayak the waters of
Back Bay to a favorite local restaurant.
Coffee at sunrise. For the cottage set, the day begins with your favorite brew
and a spectacular sunrise, and culminates with a true beach feast – steamed
crabs and shrimp from a local market, enjoyed atop newspapers on a picnic table.
Farm-grown sweetness. Fresh produce stands will keep you eating healthy, even
on vacation. Try Pungo strawberries and locally-grown tomatoes, or visit one of
our local Farmers Markets.
True romance. Think you’d be a true romantic if only the Atlantic Ocean could
provide a beautiful sunset to go with your dinner? No worries, head to the
Chesapeake Bay Area and watch the big red ball sink into the water.
Go upscale. For a taste of the cosmopolitan life after a day in the sun, head to
Town Center for dining, shopping and entertainment.

When your dearly beloved gather in Virginia Beach,
there’s happiness all around.
Weddings
& Reunions
Wedded bliss begins right here.
There are so many things that make your wedding day uniquely
your own. The dress, the tux, the food, the s
 pecial person
you’ll spend the rest of your life with. But perhaps the most
memorable thing of all is location. Where you are on the day
that you say “I Do” will be forever embedded in your memory
as the place where your entire life changed. A Virginia Beach
wedding promises a truly special beginning to your life-long
journey together.
You and your better-half-to-be may enjoy the idea of a calm
sunset ceremony with the waves crashing behind you, or
perhaps another scene as lively as your love for each other.
You can dictate specifically how you want your day to be.
Our new Beach Wedding Permit gives couples the ability
to celebrate their ceremony right on the beach, certain that
their place by the shore is available and accessible. For up
to three hours you can reserve a space of public beach for
you and your guests to set up and enjoy your wedding event.
In addition to the public beaches of the Resort Area, there
are many secluded beaches such as the Chesapeake Bay
and Sandbridge.
Virginia Beach also offers several indoor options for those
who would prefer to enjoy their celebration on firmer, more
traditional ground. Some unique spots include the Virginia
Aquarium and Marine Science Center, where your celebration
takes place among the Aquarium’s marine life.
Perhaps you are more inclined to a modern and stylish event?

Accommodations and Campgrounds
The City of Virginia Beach and the Hotel/
Motel Association want your stay to be
happy and carefree. Some properties
may not be open year round, so it is best
to make a reservation prior to arriving.
When you make a reservation at one of
our hotels or motels, a deposit secured
by check, credit card or money order
may be required. Reservations are
confirmed upon receipt of your deposit
by the hotel. Familiarize yourself with
and inquire about c
 ancellation policies,
early checkouts, refunds, number of
people in the room and any fees
associated with lodging stay, as
policies vary from one hotel to another.
Changes in Reservations
Hotels may require up to seven (7) days
written notice of cancellation prior to
arrival date.
PLEASE BE AWARE that some
lodging establishments do charge an
administrative fee for cancellation
of accommodations.
Early Checkouts and Refunds
Hotels may require up to, but no more
than, 72 hours notice when a guest
requests a change in a previously set
departure date. Weekly, monthly and
group rates are subject to the
confirmation or contract.
When a Refund is Due
Standard bookkeeping practices are
observed. Refund checks are usually
mailed from the hotel’s business office.
Refunds are not usually made from the
registration desk.
Changes in Rates
This publication was assembled in
the fall of 2013. Due to a number of
factors, it is impossible to insure that
the published rates for a hotel will
not change. The publisher has no
control over this situation. Holiday
and weekend rates may be slightly
higher. Please inquire about the
rate when making reservations.
Minimum Stays
Some hotels require two-, three- or
four-day minimum stays for confirmed
reservations, including weekends
and holidays.
