IS YOUR HOME'S ELECTRICAL
SUPPLY ABLE TO MEET YOUR
DEMAND?
ELECTRICAL SAFETY 101
DON’T BE A SHOCKING
STATISTIC DO IT RIGHT
Thousands of people in this
country are seriously injured each
year because of electrical
accidents and electrical fires. Most of these can
be prevented by safe electrical practices. Here
are a few electrical safety tips from ABC
Electrical:
• Major appliances like refrigerators, washers
and dryers, stoves, etc. should be plugged
into wall outlets.
• If you need an extension cord for a major
appliance, make sure it's an appliance
extension cord.
• Consider arc fault circuit interrupters (AFC’s)
for your home. AFC’s shut down electricity
when a dangerous condition occurs; for
example, when outlets or circuits are
overloaded.
• Use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFC’s) in
your bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room,
garage and outdoor locations where you have
access to water.
• Test AFC’s and GFC’s once a month to make
sure they're working properly.
• You should have smoke alarms on every level
of your home, inside each bedroom and
outside each sleeping area. Replace batteries
once a year, and smoke alarms every ten
years.
• Never use an extension cord that’s damaged,
and don’t use a cord that feels hot. Extension
cords can overheat if what you’ve plugged in
draws more current than the extension cord
can carry.
• Schedule an electrical safety inspection to
identify and correct potential electrical
hazards in your home.

The electric requirements for today's modern
appliances and devices keep going up, and the
electrical system in many homes may not be able
to meet these new demands. For example, newer
homes have 30 to 40 circuits, supplying the electrical
power needed to en;oy home entertainment centers,
microwaves, coffee machines and many other
modern conveniences. A home built in the 1970s,
however, may have only 12 circuits to serve the entire
house. Many of these homeowners are plugging
thousands of dollars worth of electronics into a panel
that may not be able to safely serve and protect
them. A common sign that a home is drawing more
electricity than the electrical system can safely
distribute is frequent circuit breaker tripping and
flickering lights. If you're experiencing these signs it's
time to increase the capacity of your home's
electrical service panel. Call McHales — we're
experts in all electrical upgrades, service and repairs.
