Meet the Artist has been a celebrated series at Lincoln
Center for more than 30 years. Its roots sprang from the
Lincoln Center Guided Tours in 1979 with just five
minute conversations with artists during a tour. Now, 30
years later it is a family of two seasonal series: Meet the
Artist School Series and Meet the Artist Saturdays. Each
is comprised of world class interactive workshops
coupled with question and answer sessions featuring
artists from a wide array of disciplines.
NEW THIS YEAR: IMAGINATION LESSON PLANS
Meet the Artist has been a celebrated series at Lincoln Center for more than 30 years. Its roots
sprang from the Lincoln Center Guided Tours in 1979 with just five minute conversations with
artists during a tour. Now, 30 years later it is a family of three seasonal series: Meet the Artist
School Series, Meet the Artist Library Series, and Meet the Artist Saturdays. Each is comprised
of world class interactive workshops coupled with question and answer sessions featuring
artists from a wide array of disciplines.
This year we introduce Imagination Lesson Plans, six-to-eight week units designed around
select performances. These lesson plans explicitly connect your Meet the Artist experience with
the Common Core™ curriculum, touching on the unique
Capacities for Imaginative Learning developed by educators at our acclaimed Lincoln Center
Institute. The Imagination Lesson Plans include a planning conversation with one of our
teaching artists. Look at the end of performance listings in this brochure for Imagination Lesson
Plan availability and cross-curriculum interest. For more information, please call us at
212.875.5289.
Common Core Ready
All Meet the Artist programs are designed to connect to the Common Core™ curriculum
standards, making it easier for teachers to link their visit to classroom activities. In particular,
we’ve focused on helping students:
•
Demonstrate independence
•
Build strong content knowledge
•
Respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline
•
Comprehend as well as critique
•
Value evidence
•
Come to understand other perspectives and cultures
In each program, students are made active participants, stimulated by a variety of performance
disciplines. This strong combination of high-quality content and memorable student
engagement makes Meet the Artist a powerful complement to Common Core™ curricula.

rich in history and tradition, students are painted a picture of the lively and steadfast spirit of a people
who have influenced the world through song, philosophy, science and much more over the centuries.
Vibrant songs engage the entire audience in call and response with the band, and instrumental pieces
evoke visions of a storied land ever evolving and contributing to our global and social understanding.

influences it encountered, students are able to draw parallels with their own multi-cultural heritage
and art forms which express their history.

Louder than Words
Experience a show where the imagination runs wild! An invisible wind sets Gregg Goldston’s
umbrella afloat—and suddenly we’re in a place where the laws of physics no longer matter. In this
world of mime, invisible people and places come to life right before your eyes. Before you know it,
your mind begins creating the words to the story. Gregg Goldston is the premiere mime soloist in the
world today, and his works have been hailed by The New York Times as “a blazing display of
physical virtuosity.” His mentor, the legendary Marcel Marceau, said of Gregg, “His vision has
expanded the art of mime.” His show Louder than Words, takes audiences on hilarious adventures
from a hat stuck in mid-air and three jazz musicians who argue about who is the biggest star, to a
lonely guy picking a flower and wondering if: She loves me, or She loves me not. Student volunteers
join him on stage discovering how to animate their own characters and stories. Ignite the imagination
without words, hear the voices and feelings of each character through animated silence which speaks
louder than words.
Imagination Lesson Plan available for this selection.

Stories of mythic proportions come alive on the stage as the talented actors of Point of Entry
Theater Company take on the epic characters of Greek mythology. Popular with School Series
audiences, this young and accomplished ensemble takes the tangled web of stories flowing from
Mount Olympus and makes sense of them with the help of students and teachers. Zeus is the
ringmaster for this colossal undertaking. The artists encourage volunteers to give their take on
reconstructing the Cyclops and cheering on Atalanta, the fastest woman in the world! The talented
trio of actors recapture the tales of betrayal, conquest, love, and power by transporting the basic
concepts of each myth through time to modern day scenarios. “Woman holds foot race in the woods,
prize: Marriage or Death!” “Narcissus stares at himself in the pond so long he turns into a flower
forever by the water’s edge!” “Odysseus saves military crew from giant Cyclops!” Get these stories
and more, live on the School Series stage!

Think Funny—Think Fast: The Mini-Musical
Ever wonder how improv comedians create a song on the spot with absolutely no planning, no sheet
music, no conductor, and only a one-word suggestion? This is your chance to learn! This comedy
team has been performing to rave reviews since its first show four years ago at the Upright Citizen’s
Brigade Theater. Glennis McMurray, Tara Copeland, and Frank Spitznagel will have audiences
roaring as they guide them through basic song structures used by comics to invent musicals on the
spot. Students will hone teamwork, on-the-spot problem solving, and listening skills to create their
own rhythms and patterns from Broadway-style musical improv to even freestyle rap, demonstrating
how everyone can create a funny, fast-paced, fantastic mini-musical of their own.

Slam 102: Verbal Velocity
Three brilliant poets take on the challenge of exploring brand-new genres of poetry. Previously, Slam
101 brought students the List Poem, The Declarative Poem, and the Persona Poem. This year, Slam
102 introduces the strange new poetry forms of the Ekphrastic Poem, the Personification Poem, and
the Narrative Poem. Students will again witness and participate in the hippest performing arts scene
in New York City today, the Open Mic Poetry Slam. Students and teachers become judges for a live
competition between a talented and dynamic poet-performance team directed by Cecilia Rubino and
featuring masterful poets Darian Dauchan, Erik Maldonado, and Shanelle Gabriel as D.J. Jenna
spins the beat. Audiences will engage in the verbal kung-fu match, creating original works on the
spot. Join in the fun and decide which poet will be the last one standing on the School Series stage.

artist directs his musical ensemble through the ages while teaching students essentials like musical
counting, rhythmic placement, and syncopation. Discover how a drum beat communicated danger,
location, and other important messages to advancing armies and small villages. Volunteers will try
their hands at creating language and telling their own stories through percussion live on stage with
the artists. Audiences witness in awe the speed and dexterity as mallets strike up unforgettable tunes.

Meet the Artist Fall/Winter 2011 Series
SUPPORT
Meet the Artist has been a celebrated series at Lincoln
Center for more than 30 years. Its roots sprang from the
Lincoln Center Guided Tours in 1979 with just five
minute conversations with artists during a tour. Now, 30
years later it is a family of two seasonal series: Meet the
Artist School Series and Meet the Artist Saturdays. Each
is comprised of world class interactive workshops
coupled with question and answer sessions featuring
artists from a wide array of disciplines.
NEW THIS YEAR:
IMAGINATION LESSON PLANS
This year we introduce Imagination Lesson Plans, six-to-eight week units designed around select
performances. These lesson plans explicitly connect your Meet the Artist experience with the Common
Core™ curriculum, touching on the unique
Capacities for Imaginative Learning developed by educators at our acclaimed Lincoln Center Institute.
The Imagination Lesson Plans include a planning conversation with one of our teaching artists. Look at
the end of performance listings in this brochure for Imagination Lesson Plan availability and crosscurriculum interest. For more information, please call us at 212.875.5289.
Common Core Ready
All Meet the Artist programs are designed to connect to the Common Core™ curriculum standards,
making it easier for teachers to link their visit to classroom activities. In particular, we’ve focused on
helping students:
•
Demonstrate independence
•
Build strong content knowledge
•
Respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline
•
Comprehend as well as critique
•
Value evidence
•
Come to understand other perspectives and cultures
In each program, students are made active participants, stimulated by a variety of performance
disciplines. This strong combination of high-quality content and memorable student engagement
makes Meet the Artist a powerful complement to Common Core™ curricula.

Young Music Makers Overview
Each spring for more than two decades schools from throughout the US present their bands, jazz ensembles, choirs,
choruses and orchestras on Lincoln Center’s outdoor plazas as part of Lincoln Center’s Young Music Makers series.
Performances by the school groups are free to the public and are usually around lunchtime, when the plazas are crowded
with visitors and neighborhood workers. Lincoln Center provides the venue, chairs, and electricity if needed. Schools bring
their own instruments, and sound equipment. There is no charge for participation.
We are eager to expand this opportunity to the even larger numbers of developing musicians of New York City and hope to
hear from more NYC Music Educators soon!
